BEWARE - Serious Safety Concern Within minutes of arriving, the owner's large German Shepherd broke free and attacked our 20-pound Cavapoo. Had I not been able to pull my dog away, the outcome could have been much worse. While trying to protect our dog, my wife suffered a hyperextended thumb and scratches from the dog's nails. She was shaken and injured, and what should have been a fun day on Block Island was ruined before it even began. We were told the dog had "broken" its leash, but that raises an obvious question: why is a dog capable of attacking another animal being kept around customers? The response was minimal, and before we had even left, it was back to business as usual. Later that day, we met another couple who had rented from this company. Their moped reportedly broke down within minutes, and they said they received little assistance and had to walk back. We ultimately rented from Island Moped and later learned that it is owned by the same individual behind Moped Man and Old Harbor Mopeds & Bikes. While the staff treated us professionally and accommodated our situation, the events of that day left us questioning whether customer safety is given the level of attention it deserves. Block Island is a fantastic destination with plenty of rental options. Based on our experience, there is absolutely no reason to take the risk with this business. The attack was bad enough. The dismissive response afterward was worse. It made it clear that customer safety is not a priority for this business. We will never return, and anyone traveling with children, pets, or family members should think very carefully before doing business here. read more

We came on a quiet rainy Sunday We went to rent a moped for the day and wanted to hold out til 10am for the rain to stop. The man tried making us rent it sooner to get the "morning special" and then rudely told us a bunch of different prices and tried getting us for $250 for the day. We went around the corner to Island Moped and Bike and got it for HALF that price for the entire day. On a busy, sunny summer day I understand why it would be that expensive but the inconsistency and attitude we got was not professional or pleasant by any means. Very easy process renting with them! I was looking online for prices and didn't want to pay the $60/hr price so we were set on getting bicycles. However, once there, they gave us a deal--$85 for 3 hours. Overall, a wonderful experience and 3 hours was the perfect amount of time to explore Block Island! read more

Very rude and ignorant. We called one week ahead of time to rent 2 Mopeds for 24 hours and were quoted $150 (which is what we paid 2 weeks prior) When we got there, they told us they couldn't do 24 hours and asked for more money for less time on the scooters. Ended up having to pay $200 each. One of the mopeds had the oil light on and when we brought it back, staff didnt care and had us continue to drive it. The other moped needed to be put out of its misery. Cant charge 200 for a POS. Awful. Wouldn't recommend. read more

I rented a bike from this place and the chain kept popping off but I dealt with it and made it to coast guard beach. It popped off again immediately on the ride back so I called the number on the bike to come pick up my party and me. It took 20 minutes to come get us and when we got back the owner was extremely rude. She asked why we didn't call immediately and told us to go pay the bill. We asked the woman at the desk for a refund and she overheard and told her to call the police. This was the worst service of my life and I'm lucky the bike didn't kill me. Please do yourself a favor and choose another place to rent from. read more

One of the better moped shops on the island. I've been coming here for the past 8 years and every time I rent from the moped man. I went there earlier this July.They always give us great deals. I bring my whole family out and we usually rent both bikes and mopeds from them. Great service great demo guys and the bikes run perfectly. They get me set up quick and effectually every time. I'm probably going back again this August. It's so much fun and the best way to see the island. read more

Yeah! Rent your mopeds in the spring before the crowd comes (May-ish) and he'll rent you a moped for $40 for the whole day instead of $40 for an hour like in the summer. Mopeds are sweet and block island is a gorgeous island to see on a moped. read more

Arrived early to rent a bike from The Moped Man. The staff threw me the rustiest, clunkiest bike they had. This thing would not change gears which is necessary climbing some of the hills on the Island. When I returned the bike and gave them the save review, the guy told me to talk to the girls in the building. I did. Her response "why didn't you take a new bike?" Grr..why didn't you give me a new bike? I guest they weren't sure if they would run out of bikes for the day, so they give out the clunkers first. Never again. read more

This was our first time on mopeds and didn't know how to handle one. The attendants trained us in minutes (if you really think about it, its not enough time). Funny part was that I was told not to squeeze the right break or I will flip over - HUH???? So already I was't comfortable and you can imagine I didn't touch that right break thingy the entire day. Since we went in the summer, we had to pay that crazy fee, which is why I rate it only 2 stars. $238 (which was a discount) for two mopeds for the entire day - funny I can rent a convertible porsche for that kind of money, but it was family day so we did it. The mopeds were clean, gassed up and the attendants were friendly. There was a man there, which I assume was Moped Man, he was funny and quite attentive. I couldn't imagine not having transportation on the island unless I was going to only stay at the beach all day. The mopeds added a little adventure to the day. After about 30 minutes or so, I was able to handle the moped (except that right break) read more

Old and poorly maintained bicycles. My bike literally would not shift out of high gear which made dealing with the hills of the island nearly impossible. Although we had a half-day rental, we only used the bike for little more than an hour. When I brought up the poor condition of the bike, we were completely dismissed by the staff. No offer to refund at least part of our money or anything. read more

Do not ever rent from here the manager is awful. We were there a week ago yesterday, and when you rent the bike they scan your license and have you sign a whole bunch. The employee forgot to give us my license back (which i get we should have remembered also but it's overwhelming and there were people behind us). So last week Wednesday we called them and asked if they still had the license and they did. They promised me they would get it out in the mail the next day. Then the following Tuesday I call and ask where it is to find the manager never even mailed it when the employee gave it to him the day I called. So a week later driving with no license no apology from the manager and no tracking number or overnight still no license. The employee had to go out and mail it herself because the manager could care less. So after a week driving with no license and no call from the manager or anything apologizing and seeing how the place runs there DO NOT give them your business you deserve better customer service than they have. read more

Lousy bikes, three chains fell off within 2 miles, a kickstand broke when my son tried to prop the bike up. Worst off all, the salesperson insinuated he had broken intentionally. I was treated very rudely by their blonde girl salesperson, who just doesn't know that a service business means the customer satisfaction comes first. The handler just place the malfunctioning bikes back to be rented. Unfortunately, Moped Man is on the main strip and will attract the casual visitor like me, on our first trip to Block Island. Be warned, their bikes are dangerous, the service is rude, and obviously from the other reviewers, the owner doesn't care about how the business is run. You deserve better for your hard earned money..they don't deserve to remain open. read more

Terrible experience. A friend and I took a day trip to Block Island and rented bikes from Moped Man for 1/2 day. The seat on my bike would not stay up so I brought it back after 15 min. They said they fixed and it seemed better for the next 30 min but again it kept collapsing. We had to walk the bikes until we could get a cell signal to call for help from other end of the island. We returned the bikes and asked for our money back. The total rental cost was $44. The owner offered $5 refund for one bike only. We explained that the broken bike affected both of us and ruined our day. He refused to do the right thing. We wasted 3 hrs of our day with this store. Do not waste a minute of your day with them. read more

Rented a bike for an afternoon ride around the island. The woman at the counter was pleasant enough but clueless. The young men giving out the bikes seemed like they wish they were somewhere else and also clueless. I sat on the bike, the seat was warm from siting in the sun. I needed to adjust the seat so got off the bike. I then noticed my shorts were dripping wet. I thought I wet my pants but could not remember doing that. I thought this wetness slightly odd. I looked at the bike seat and it was dry. I then got on the bike and rode out of the area. The seat became so hot that I had to stop. I stood up and my shorts were dripping with hot water. I looked at the seat and noticed two small tears in the seat. The cushion under the seat cover was saturated and when I sat on the seat the water came out of the little holes. I went back and asked if I could get a different bike. The young man said "oh all the seats are like that and it will dry". I figured my butt was sufficiently saturated and it did not matter. My tires were not filled properly and the gears hard to turn. Shame on me for not taking my own bike. If you do rent for M.M. bring a baggy or wear diapers. read more
