I'm updating my review because Maya was able to fix my haircut somehow and she put in real genuine efforts to do so!! She owned up the mistake and offered to help fixing all the flaws. She did the hairwash, blowdry and spent good amount of 45+ minutes on my hair and made sure every inch was fixed!! She was humble through the process. I would also like to add Jenny was really sorry and the earlier terrible haircut was totally unintentional and did out of hurry! Also I have seen her doing really good haircuts to other clients so she seems to be fine stylist otherwise, maybe it was a bad day for her when she attended me! I'm still taking out two stars because my haircut is somehow fixed but not sure if I like it.. Its neither A line bob nor a blunt cut! and definitely shorter than what I originally wanted! I've been loathing getting a haircut for a long time now and finally decided to do it today. I looked around at a lot of different salons and couldn't find any haircut images of hair similar to mine on their websites (men's long hair). I took a chance and went to Cutting Edge and I am glad I did. I looked on their website and Brenda had availability today so I went with her. Brenda did an amazing job and was able to match my sample images perfectly. She explained the things she was doing as she went and made recommendations on things I didn't even know I wanted! I absolutely love my haircut. Brenda even offered me a water bottle during my haircut and gave me one of the lemons that she brought to work to give away that day. As someone with lots of haircut anxiety, I can honestly say that I had a great experience. Thanks again for the cut Brenda! I'll be back for my next one! read more

Just got my hair did and wow! They take bookings so I suggest calling ahead. I was promptly greeted and in the chair quickly. My stylist Jennifer was fantastic. She really listened to what I wanted and added her expertise to the equation. She was very skillful and fluid with her technique. The cut came out looking fly and so did I! Haven't had a cut in years because it's really hard for me to find a stylist that I trust. I have super frizzy and wavy hair. After doing an extensive search on Yelp, I decided to give Maya a try. Yelp did not fail me! Maya did such a great job and listened to all my concerns while giving me her suggestions. My cut turned out just the way I envisioned and she even curled my hair for me. I hate giving this place 2 out of 5 stars because Jenny seemed nice, but my conscience is telling me to give an honest review of my experience in this salon...so here it is: This was my first time coming into this salon; I used to go to a salon in Mountain View regularly for a few years but moved to Fremont so I thought I'd look for a go-to salon in Fremont. I came in for a cut and deep conditioning. Let's start with the good things that I experienced first: The GOOD things: - Jenny was detail-oriented about cutting my hair, though she did ask me to stand up a couple times while she was cutting my hair- cuz she said the chair was crooked. I've never had to do that in the various other salons I had been to but maybe Cutting Edge needs to get new chairs? - Jenny did ask about how I liked to style my hair. It was nice to feel that she cared about that. She suggested that I got a V-shaped haircut, which was exactly what I wanted but I wasn't sure what it was called (i had thought it was called "layering" or "framing my face"). I do like the haircut. - Whatever shampoo and/or conditioner smells nice. Even after I re-washed my hair at home 2 days later, the smell of the salon's products still linger (till now). I like that. Now the BAD things (in chronological order): - As soon as I walked into the salon, it smelled really weird. The best way I can describe it may be an old dingy smell? I am used to walking into salons that either don't smell like anything or smell like hairspray (which usually smells better than whatever smell was in this salon when i walked in for my appointment). - When I was sitting under the hair steamer during the deep conditioning, the steamer was dripping on me...not just once or twice but multiple times...it was like hot rain drizzling on me. Also, after Jenny cut my hair, she took off the salon robe and put only a small towel around my neck, so when I was sitting under that leaking hair steamer, the steam drops hit my skin (on my arms) or my clothes- luckily I wasn't wearing anything fancy so my shirt wasn't damaged and my skin has a high tolerance to hot temperatures so I didn't get burnt. However, someone who has more sensitive skin than me might be injured. Regardless, I don't think the hair steamer was supposed to do that...They should maybe get a new hair steamer. - When Jenny was washing my hair, she asked me where I was originally from...and I told her I grew up in the US but was born in Indonesia. She told me she is from Vietnam and I mentioned that I recognized the language she used to speak with the other stylist because my previous hair stylist in Mountain View speaks the same language and he is also Vietnamese. When I referred to my previous hair stylist as "he", she asked me if he's gay and I indifferently said yes. Then she commented "Men who do nails or hair usually become gay"...when I didn't say anything, she added "or maybe they were always like that"- and I responded "yes, they're always like that". I am not part of the LGBTQ community and I wasn't offended but I can see how some people could've been offended by a comment like that. So I would suggest just being more careful about commenting on such a sensitive topic. - She kept trying to sell me other services like coloring, eyebrow wax and eyebrow tint. Being a softie, I agreed to have her wax my eyebrows when she said she had time to do so, even though I didn't think I had that much outlier eyebrow hairs to wax (figured it's only $15). After she washed my hair, she took me to a separate room for the eyebrow wax and told me to lie down on the chair there...even tho my hair was still wet from the wash. When I commented on my wet hair, she wrapped my hair in a towel before I lied down. She proceeded to wax my eyebrows, which turned out good, though at some point she waxed across my forehead and the sides of my forehead...those are not even close to my eyebrows. I've had salon eyebrow wax several times since 2014 but had never had my forehead waxed during the eyebrow wax session... - When she was cutting my hair, I had seen another girl leave the salon with wet hair, so I asked Jenny to blow dry my hair after the wash, and she did. However she told me that she wasn't going to style my hair cuz I hadn't booked for styling. I found this to be very strange because in the various salons I had been to across the bay area and in other states, they would usually still style my hair even though I didn't specifically booked for styling services...and those salons aren't even considered $$$ (upscale) salons. OVERALL: Overall, the cut I got looks good but I didn't have a good experience here so I will have to keep looking for a go-to salon in Fremont or go back to my usual salon in Mountain View. first off, you can make an online appointment which is great! I scheduled a 30 min women's haircut with Maya at 2:30 on a weekday. when I arrived she was still finishing up with another client, and I had to wait 20 minutes which sucked. when she was finally done, I mentioned I wanted a basic trim and dusting. Maya cut my hair dry and was done in 9 minutes. I was surprised, but I also liked the end result so thought nothing of it. She still did charge me full price for the '"womens haircut" which I thought was unfair, given I spent 2/3rd of her appointed time with me just sitting and waiting for her previous appointment to be done. the other part I wasn't super comfortable with was her insistence on removing my face mask so she could see the shape of my face. I totally get that and didn't mind a quick look, but she wanted it off for the rest of the cut (she wasn't masked either). I asked her about it half way, and she replied she's vaccinated and assumed I was too (?). this made me uncomfortable and I haven't had this experience at other hair salons during the pandemic. Overall I liked my hair trim and Maya for sure knows her job well and knows how to cut hair, it just wasn't worth the wait time and the covid exposure risk. read more

My brother referred me to Cutting Edge Salon in July 2021 and I have been coming here for haircuts ever since. Scheduling a haircut through their website is easy. If you want a specific person, you can select different times. Wait times can vary upon arrival. Though they accept walk-ins (if their schedules permit), I don't recommend taking that route. The location is on busy Fremont Boulevard in-between Peralta and Central, and street parking can be hard to find during peak hours. However, there is a parking lot in the rear and that is usually very empty. The salon is always clean. No complaints there! Currently, Maya and Jenny are holding down the fort here and they are great! I tend to have a hands-off approach to my haircut and I'm not too picky about my hairstyle. So whenever I come for a haircut, I just show them a photo of what I want my hair to look like and they work their magic. I have not yet worked with them on specific hair preferences as I am currently mostly indifferent to that. However, when that time comes, we will see! My first few times here, Jenny worked on my hair. Recently, Maya has been working on my hair. Both Maya and Jenny provide stellar service, they are great to talk to, and my hair has turned out to my liking after every visit. They are not afraid to take any feedback on how their hair-cutting is going, so don't feel nervous about communicating with them during the haircut. A big takeaway is that they do really care about their customer's requests and the overall result and are willing to follow up to improve the experience if something doesn't go right. read more

I tried Cutting Edge after reading all of the great reviews on Yelp. I was not disappointed! Maya cut my hair, and it looks great. She suggested adding in some layers (which I agreed to, and I love the result) and did not push me or get offended when I declined her suggestion of cutting it shorter, which I really appreciated (I am open to people suggesting new things to try/buy but I hate it they try to push me into doing/buying something that I decide that I don't want). She was friendly, and respectful and made me feel comfortable right from the start. It's clear that she wants the customer to leave happy with the services received. The salon was clean, smelled fresh and everyone was professional. I love the fact that appointments can be booked online. Being new to the area, and this salon being highly rated, I decided to give it a chance. My review has nothing to do with the friendliness or cleanliness of the place, but the overall quality of my results. I decided to get a cut and color. I wanted thick accent pieces as well as a money piece, and a cut with a few layers and face-framing. While the color came out nicely, it wasn't even done down to my roots. I left with at least half an inch of "new growth". On top of that, my hair cut was completely uneven when I checked it out when I got home. And I'm talking 2+ inches longer on one side, I've never seen anything like it. I didn't have time to go back because I took the morning off from work, and to even it out at this point would make it so short! I just wear it to one side now until it can grow some. read more

If you are looking for a new salon for vibrant colors I would highly suggest looking elsewhere. The hair cut was nice and that stylist was kind enough to communicate with me the whole time about the cut. My issue was with the coloring service. Pricing: I originally booked an appointment online for a hair coloring, with the price listed at $90. I was given no communications at all throughout the appointment until at checkout where I learned the price was now $400! She claimed this was because they had to do beyond what the online scheduler allowed, but gave me no communication about this at all until right then. This would not have been a problem if it was communicated at all. Salon Experience: The experience in the salon was odd as well. The lady who was mainly working on my hair kept being checked on by the other stylist. The other stylist constantly coming over to tweak her work (a bit concerning especially once you read the following). Color Quality: One week later of taking meticulous care to prevent the color from fading, the color has faded drastically (picture attached to the review) from purple to a brass gray. For a $400 "professional" color, this should not be the case. It was explained that there would be fading due to the fashion color requiring another session to last longer however a week is a bit fast for this amount of fade and brassiness read more

She asked me what my appointment was, "I told her you said 10:30 am -I will be there in a fee minutes. I arrived 10 minutes early. It was easy to book an appointment online. I was ok with the cut - it wasn't bad but it wasn't exactly what I wanted - I got lots of layers and bangs, which is always an adjustment. I went mid-week late morning, so I thought there was enough time to get my hair done. I got sat in the chair, spritzed with water, and the stylist got to work. I figured since my cut included bangs, she wanted to cut the hair dry to make sure they weren't too short and she would wash after. My appointment was for a women's cut, which apparently does not include wash and style...every other salon I've been to includes this, but every salon operates differently and it was silly of me to assume. The thing is, she asked me after the cut if I wanted to wash and style, and I said yes since that's what I'm used to. In the meantime, a man walked in with an appointment while I was getting my blow dry/style, and I felt my stylist was rushed. I guess he was her next appointment, and she needed to get to him asap. Again, I chose a late morning appointment mid-week so that there would be time to get my hair done (cut and style). In the end, the shampoo and styling was an extra charge on top of the cut, and while it wasn't insanely expensive, it would be great to have all those options available when booking online. I wanted to like this place but I'm afraid I won't be back. I think it's good for quick men's cuts since those were the only people I saw come in besides a lady with very short hair. On the plus side, both stylists were really nice, the salon is clean, and they had good music on. Also, hair grows back and it's just not that big of a deal. My boyfriend has had a great experience with his haircuts from Jenny that I decided to book a hair trim from Mai. Definitely happy that I did! She's so personable and sweet to talk to, which is a great experience factor I really appreciated. She trimmed about 1.5 inches and improved the shape of my hair - I had frizziness going on from my previous haircut. Extremely frustrated. I now have several bald spots on my head. I believe this is due to improper thinning of the hair or a lack of understanding of the shape of my head. The worst part about this is that the stylist told me this was my fault for laying down before the haircut or not saying it should be longer. I don't know what hair length has to do with this since there are streaks of missing hair and clear spots of missing hair. It took everything I had to remain calm and leave the hairdresser without making any negative comments, especially since I've been here before and the last haircut was great. read more

It was my first time getting my hair done with Maya, and I'm so in love with how my hair turned out! I had box dyed my hair red during quarantine bc the salons closed up and I needed a change. Maya brought my hair back to life when I asked her if she can do an Ashy Grey on me. It was a process, but it was definitely worth it. I signed myself up for a bang trim but had forgotten to add in a regular hair trim since the last person that cut my hair left a large chunk just hanging out. I was nervous mentioning it, but Brenda was so nice and offered to fix that right up for no additional charge! She mentioned a scathing review on Yelp, and I was surprised to see one so harsh! She isn't new to the business, she's just new to working at this particular shop and layout. So while I definitely feel for that customer, I couldn't relate it to my own experience with Brenda at all. She was really understanding and responsive to my needs and requests when I asked, so I feel like some communication probably would have avoided any issues. But in any case--I really like how Brenda also suggested some recommendations as we were going through the appointment. I recently got a hair cut here from Maya. It has been a year since my last hair cut. I thought I should try someone new. I went into yelp and found alot of good review for Maya , so thought I give them a try. Don't waste your time or money here. I went and came out looking the same. I gave her a picture and she started cutting for like 10min and told me she was done. I asked her can you cut more here and here? She said oh no, then it would be too short. Really? Then why do I still look the same like when I walked in? I am disappointed that stylist would do this to their customers knowing that we have lots of choices out there. Will never go again. I just wanna say, I've been seeing the same hair dresser for 6 years before I moved to california. I came here and someone over bleached my hair leaving it so damaged that I didn't get my hair done here since. My hair was so long and dry I had to get it cut so I made a last minute decision to check out cutting edge. The lovely hair dresser told me my hair was not blended- she ain't wrong I was planning to go back home to dye it black, she suggested to color it again and I resisted at first due to my previous experience and then decided to give it a shot. I am SO IN LOVE WITH MY HAIR! Everyone has complimented me I love the cut, the color, I cannot stop looking at it.
