After a hearty meal and a sweet tooth craving, a couple of buddies and I stumbled upon Custard King on our way to the Astoria Tower. We made it just in time before they closed at 6pm. Unfortunately they do not sell frozen custard as indicated by Erin B. But they do sell Tillamook Ice Cream and other confectioneries and savory dishes. Although they do not have custard, the prices are phenomenally a steal. For $2 for 1 scoop of ice cream, it hit the spot to my lavish bar food meal I had just devoured. This can be on a cup or a cone. If you want both it would be 5 cents more. I had Tillamook's Mocha Almond Fudge Ice Cream which was pretty yummy and had the mocha flavor hitting your from left and right. What's also cool is this place is near a winery and it also has a drive through (which I did not see). Overall this is a good place to enjoy ice cream on a hot or cold day. If I'm ever in the area, I would go back to try their savory dishes. read more

Having lived in Astoria my whole life, I have eaten at the classic Custard King many times and always thought it was decent, but not as good as its nemesis, Dairy Maid. It's now owned by some young blood from Portland and they've definitely made some delicious changes. They've also simplified the menu, so that you really only have a handful of food options. No more Tillamook hard ice cream or extra sandwiches. Simple burgers, fries or tots, greens, and custard, pretty much. I think the simple menu suits it and it also allows for the food to be made very quickly! I'm talking less than 5min for my cheeseburger, tots and vanilla custard shake. I watched them make it all and they did a great job! The bun was toasted and delish! Special sauce for dipping tots was yummy. Custard shake was simple and good. The one reminder for folks is that the burgers don't come with pickles. You have to add them on. I didn't realize this and I can tell you that I missed getting that pickle flavor on my cheeseburger, so I won't make that mistake again. If your looking for a sloppy Mom & Pop type cheeseburger, I still vote for Dairy Maid, in Warrenton. All us locals seem to agree it's amazing!! But if you're in Astoria and want something a little less messy, simple, great ingredients that are fresh, and fast service, I'd say give the revamped Custard King a try! read more

Finally went back to try their burgers. We caught it at a bad time, a whole bunch of folks on motorcycles got there just before us, so it was a bit of a wait, but no big deal. My husband LOVED his burger. I wasn't too hungry so I just got fried mushrooms. I was really disappointed with them, the batter was not seasoned very well, barely had any flavor, and didn't seem to be cooked all the way. I had pumpkin pie ice cream which was awesome, but again, it's just Tillamook Ice Cream, it's not like they make it there. NOT the place to go for frozen custard, but a decent place to go for a good burger and ice cream. read more

Loved this burger place. Custard machine on the fritz so only got a burger and coke. What really stood out to me is the buns! So soft and like nothing I've tried. Thin burgers which I love. Before vacay I was told by friends I HAD to stop by Custard king because they have old-fashioned frozen custard, which is richer and creamier than ice cream. Boy were they right, the custard is wonderful and so is their food. We have tried the shrimp tacos, fish tacos, fish and chips, and sundaes, and we're looking forward to trying clam chowder and burgers tomorrow. Everything is handmade and delicious. The fish is really tender and savory, the shrimp extremely fresh, the remoulade excellent. It even came with a little container of chopped onions and cilantro and a lime wedge, which was perfect, and at four dollars a fat taco you can chow down for $8 --just be sure to save room for a sundae. The waffle cone bowls the sundaes come in are crunchy, fresh, and handmade, and they have so many toppings nobody else has. So far my favorite combos have been lemon curd and marshmallow cream, and peanut butter sauce and malt powder. Toppings are $.50 each and sundaes are $4.50, so for six bucks you can get a completely decked out extremely delicious custard. Locally owned, clearly made with love. Check it out! read more

Meh. Their "custard" just isn't custard. If you've had real custard, you know what I mean. What they serve is essentially soft serve ice cream. And I was disappointed by how few toppings they offer - not even hot fudge. I'm happy to see that this place has been reinvigorated and is in new hands, but I hope they introduce a bit more pizzaz to their offerings. Ice Creamy Goodness! It's usually a cold rainy affair in Astoria. Don't let that distract you. Even through the fog you can find the fun! Custard King is unique. Like most places in Astoria, it's in an old fashioned little building that has seen a lot over the years. Even on a rainy day, an ice cream here will cheer you right up! This is a small walk up place just off the main road, you can't miss it! They offer a nice selection of ice creams, milkshakes, sundae's, and all the classics that one assumes any place like this would have. It couldn't be a better stop if you have kids with you, and just for some extra magic, they'll hit the button and have the little train go around the ceiling to make it special. These places are becoming a rarity, make sure to not take it for granted. For such a small place, they do have a pretty large menu, and do their best to offer a good fast food selection of hamburgers, fries, fish, etc. Not my favorite, and not much of a veggie friendly option, so I tend to eat elsewhere. It's greasy, and a bit of a mess when there's not much chance to eat outside, to be aware. One of the milkshakes was overflowing and they dumped some back, and when I asked for the remainder of it they refused to give it to me. After spending $50! Really? I love a good burger joint, and I LOVE Custard King. This reminds me of a little mom & pop joint I went to as a kid (Pac Out), but better. The burgers have that yummy crust around the edges, the buns are toasted, the tater tots crispy, and the fry sauce is thick & savory. I also got a chocolate malt-- out of this world! I went there on a whim. Just visiting town, and saw the amazingly enticing sign. off the bat I was kind of blown away by how seriously they took every step of the business. For a small out of the way soft serve and burger cart it really caught my attention in positive light. I got the straight vanilla custard cone, and I gotta say that I'd be hard pressed to find a better classic cone of vanilla soft serve. Cant wait to go back and try the chocolate! New ownership has completely tarnished the legacy and tradition of the original Custard King. The new 'Custard' is nothing more than a simple vanilla soft-serve. The food is atrocious. Gone are the '50's burger hop style hamburgers and fries, replaced with low-end 'ground chuck' that tastes like a game used hockey puck and fries that taste like cardboard. This is a prime example of LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE. Very sad that the new ownership ruined a once great Astoria landmark. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! read more
