Traveled here today visiting from out of town. Lady working behind counter was nice. I decided on the clam chowder. It was creamy and had good flavor. I would definitely order it again the next time I return to Custard King in Astoria.. The soup was served with a small package of oyster crackers . I would recommend to the owners to have more seating for guests outside. We had to sit in our car when we really would have liked to sit outside but there was no room at the two picnic tables. This may be the best place to eat in Astoria. I had the Fish & Chips. This was the least expensive out of at least five or six other restaurants in the area and hands down the best. This place was really good. We went for a drive to the coast to get out of the house for a little bit during this COVID-19 Pandemic and we ended up in Astoria (and Long Beach). We wanted some fish & chips and chowder so we started looking around for things that were open and found Custard King. It is an old-school looking place with a walk up window and looked authentic. The lady at the window was extremely nice and helpful when taking our order. We got fish & chips, chowder, and a milkshake. The fish & chips, chowder, and dipping sauces were all absolutely amazing 5 STARS! I didn't care for the milkshake too much as it was a little icy tasting, but other than that everything there was great.. fish batter wasn't too heavy but still had great flavor. Hands down the best fish and chips, and clam chowder from Astoria to Tillamook. The Fish Po'Boy is also legit as well. They have great fresh French fries and service is beyond great. Don't come here expecting to sit down and be served like a traditional restaurant. Do expect to have some of the tastiest and freshest fish you can get on the Oregon Coast. The batter on the fish is light crispy and flavorful. the clam chowder actually has great pieces of clam and it's not too runny or too thick. Sorry I can't give my own opinion on the custard because I'm usually good full from over indulging I the fish and chowder that I usually ordered. Keep up the good work and make sure to stop and satisfy your fish n chips cravings here, because Mo's and anywhere else on the northern Oregon coast isn't going to satisfy that craving the way Custard King will! read more

Imagine that you are a health fanatic and that every treat must be worth it or you are profoundly disappointed- this place outshone my expectations! I got their seasonal pumpkin shake and some fries with sauce. The shake was the best one I've had in ages, with bits of graham cracker crust (like you'd have with a pumpkin pie). The fries were perfectly cooked and salted, and the tartar sauce they came with was delicious. Always wanted to stop and we finally did. I ordered a regular burger and chicken strips. First, the chicken strips were lightly coated and delicious (my foodie daughter said they were the best ever). The fries that accompanied both orders were some of the best fries I've had in years. Cooked perfectly crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside. Their fry sauce was also very good. The BURGER-I'll start by stating that I'm a burger snob. I've eaten thousands of hamburgers over 60+ years, but remember there are many different styles of burgers and unfortunately this wasn't one that I particularly enjoyed. There is a science to the construction of a burger, bun to meat ratio, what veggies are included, and the sauce used. I'll start with the bun. They use the common brand "Pub Bun" found in many grocery stores. They are really big and dense making it hard to eat without sitting down and though popular there is too much bread. Next was the beef patty. Typical Costco pre-formed beef patty with little or no taste plus they over salted it. I'm a big fan of smashed patties and not some compressed pre-formed meat. The veggies were fresh and I thank you for using white onions instead of those strong unpleasant red onions that some restaurants are using now. White onions are THE ONLY onions that should be put on a hamburger! We were disappointed that they ran out of Oreos to make an Oreo shake because their shakes looked amazing. The workers were friendly and very nice. Will we return and try them again? Heck yes, but I will order something different on the menu. read more

Ok I dream about going back. Had the lemon raspberry custard and as a die hard chocolate person, this was the best choice I've made. Daughter said her fish sandwich from here was better than a place in Long Beach and price a couple of dollars cheaper. No indoor seating. What a pleasant surprise this place was. I'm usually not a fan of burgers, but I always like to check out local places like this because they tend to be better than most sit-down restaurants. I got a simple cheeseburger with a side of fries, my wife got a custard. The burger was delicious; cooked just enough to maintain juiciness without being raw, or a hockey puck. Her custard was rich and delicious; to the point where we had to share. Prices are great; it was under twenty bucks for the both of us with tip. This review is definitely late, but I needed to write this. Custard King was one of my favorite lunch spots when I worked/lived in Astoria-Warrenton. I've tried a bit of everything, but my three favorite things (in no particular order) were the fish/shrimp tacos, the chowder, and the people who worked there. The tacos are a great deal. They always have fish, and sometimes offer shrimp, but both are really good. I love that cilantro lime cream sauce, and they are usually pretty heavy handed with it I love the flavor of the chowder. It's a bit on the thinner side (which is my preference), but definitely not thin on flavor. The people there are also super nice. It's a family run business, and they are usually very friendly and happy. If it's sunny, enjoy your food at one of their picnic tables. If it's raining, just drive across the street and enjoy your food with the grey (but beautiful) Columbia River as your scenery. If/when I go back to Astoria, I'm hoping that custard king is open bec I'll definitely go back. read more

I've eaten here five+ times. The burgers are generous, flavorful & fresh. The fries are golden & perfectly crispy around the edges. The fish & chips were fluffy, white and large pieces. Except recently. The ice cream is frozen yogurt as far as I can tell, not custard. No one in the kitchen is wearing a mask. I'd like to see them stick around, They absolutely fill a nitch that's missing in Astoria. I'm sure it's hard to find kitchen help right now and maybe that's the reason a 13 year old was working the counter. I hate to admit it, but they're so good I've eaten there when none of the staff are masked. I'm not the only one looking the other way and trusting they're doing what's right. read more

The fish and oysters were both very legit. A light batter and great fries. The oysters had a fresh sweet taste, even winning over my wife who doesn't always like oysters. Great gluten free hamburger bun, nice and soft. Let them know about gluten allergy and will toast bun on dedicated section of the grill instead of the toaster. I'm sure the ice cream is amazing, as aside in a previous review none of the two staff were wearing their masks properly. The one who was handling the food had theirs on their chin and the one behind the register had theirs below their nose. They gave pushback when I asked them to cover it. Finally had a burger here. Absolute taste tornado! I ordered the one with grilled bell peppers and onions.... Sheer veggie wonderment. And I got the tater tots and the fry sauce is very tasty.
