Custard King is an old high school hangout of my husbands, so it was well past time for me to try it! He's lactose intolerant now so I felt a bit guilty eating all this in front of him. I'll honestly say I don't understand the egg yolk/air differences between ice cream, frozen custard & gelato. I seem to enjoy all of them (especially gelato). I ordered a vanilla custard with crushed Butterfinger topping. It's cool that you get a topping free! It was $2.50. The flavor was good and not too sweet. I think I'll try chocolate the next time I'm in town. I wish the size was smaller. I'd probably want a child's size realistically. I also ordered a Royale with blue cheese ($6.50 I think). It supposedly had secret sauce but I didn't see any & couldn't taste it. I'd probably opt for a plain hamburger next time since the patty was juicy enough to hold its own. It was a big burger! I had to save some for later. Overall it's a cute & clean little shop. The man was friendly. The food is good but I think it comes down to preference between regular ice cream or a denser custard. read more

Decent food lady making the shakes seemed very salty. Burger was good. fries were good too but almost as salty as the lady making the shakes. My wife thought she got some soft serve instead of custard but I'm assuming we are confused on what custard is as it is probably just the same thing as soft serve. Okay so overall kinda decent. lady with dark hair and ripped jeans making the shakes and soft serve was salty. Will I be back I dunno. Just what you want and more from a roadside spot with adorable neon. Everything I've had has been delicious, thoughtful, and satisfying. My favorite strawberry shake of all time, tasting fresh, and it's drinkable (unlike some shakes you need to eat with a spoon); substantial but not overwrought burgers; fries I'd be happy just eating on their own; yummy and large fish tacos. The oyster po'boy was DELICIOUS and one thing I appreciated was how it was wrapped tightly to keep all the bits together so each bite had everything. It's small, but I get annoyed when sandwiches just fall apart and you don't get to appreciate how the flavors work together. That's what I mean by thoughtful. You get the sense someone is eating the food they cook, wants it to be great, isn't just throwing it out there. Oh, you can also get oyster shooters. Friendly people, too, and the patio area is a comfortable, if not particularly scenic, spot to watch Astoria on the move. read more

I have eaten burgers from here to Texas. I have now tasted the best burger in my life!!! Custard King gets it. They get the perfectly grilled bun, abundant fresh toppings and most importantly the seasoned meat patty. It is flawless with nothing to improve upon. I must have done something right in my life to live next to the juiciest, most delicious burger joint in the world. We love this place--it's charming, old school, sweet...a vanilla dish with raspberry or blackberry syrup...simple, fun, kids love it. But I was dismayed to see that none of the employees are wearing masks, in the middle of a pandemic. Wearing a mask shows one's concern for the other, the customers in this case. The Custard King seems to be making a point of not caring about any potential transmission of a potentially lethal virus...we don't know everything about COVID19 yet. Perhaps it is entirely safe to make and serve food without precaution. Or, perhaps they are spreading COVID19 to children and seniors and others who come along. Once we were there, I let my daughter order...but I think the owner would do well to show concern for the welfare of the public. read more

Traveled here today visiting from out of town. Lady working behind counter was nice. I decided on the clam chowder. It was creamy and had good flavor. I would definitely order it again the next time I return to Custard King in Astoria.. The soup was served with a small package of oyster crackers . I would recommend to the owners to have more seating for guests outside. We had to sit in our car when we really would have liked to sit outside but there was no room at the two picnic tables. The burger was really really good, fries were way too greasy to eat which was a shame, the fish was okay and finally the custard was good. The service was pretty good. They had a sign that it was under new management so maybe they are getting going. If they improve a few areas they will really be amazing. read more

This may be the best place to eat in Astoria. I had the Fish & Chips. This was the least expensive out of at least five or six other restaurants in the area and hands down the best. This place was really good. We went for a drive to the coast to get out of the house for a little bit during this COVID-19 Pandemic and we ended up in Astoria (and Long Beach). We wanted some fish & chips and chowder so we started looking around for things that were open and found Custard King. It is an old-school looking place with a walk up window and looked authentic. The lady at the window was extremely nice and helpful when taking our order. We got fish & chips, chowder, and a milkshake. The fish & chips, chowder, and dipping sauces were all absolutely amazing 5 STARS! I didn't care for the milkshake too much as it was a little icy tasting, but other than that everything there was great.. fish batter wasn't too heavy but still had great flavor. Hands down the best fish and chips, and clam chowder from Astoria to Tillamook. The Fish Po'Boy is also legit as well. They have great fresh French fries and service is beyond great. Don't come here expecting to sit down and be served like a traditional restaurant. Do expect to have some of the tastiest and freshest fish you can get on the Oregon Coast. The batter on the fish is light crispy and flavorful. the clam chowder actually has great pieces of clam and it's not too runny or too thick. Sorry I can't give my own opinion on the custard because I'm usually good full from over indulging I the fish and chowder that I usually ordered. Keep up the good work and make sure to stop and satisfy your fish n chips cravings here, because Mo's and anywhere else on the northern Oregon coast isn't going to satisfy that craving the way Custard King will! read more

Imagine that you are a health fanatic and that every treat must be worth it or you are profoundly disappointed- this place outshone my expectations! I got their seasonal pumpkin shake and some fries with sauce. The shake was the best one I've had in ages, with bits of graham cracker crust (like you'd have with a pumpkin pie). The fries were perfectly cooked and salted, and the tartar sauce they came with was delicious. Always wanted to stop and we finally did. I ordered a regular burger and chicken strips. First, the chicken strips were lightly coated and delicious (my foodie daughter said they were the best ever). The fries that accompanied both orders were some of the best fries I've had in years. Cooked perfectly crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside. Their fry sauce was also very good. The BURGER-I'll start by stating that I'm a burger snob. I've eaten thousands of hamburgers over 60+ years, but remember there are many different styles of burgers and unfortunately this wasn't one that I particularly enjoyed. There is a science to the construction of a burger, bun to meat ratio, what veggies are included, and the sauce used. I'll start with the bun. They use the common brand "Pub Bun" found in many grocery stores. They are really big and dense making it hard to eat without sitting down and though popular there is too much bread. Next was the beef patty. Typical Costco pre-formed beef patty with little or no taste plus they over salted it. I'm a big fan of smashed patties and not some compressed pre-formed meat. The veggies were fresh and I thank you for using white onions instead of those strong unpleasant red onions that some restaurants are using now. White onions are THE ONLY onions that should be put on a hamburger! We were disappointed that they ran out of Oreos to make an Oreo shake because their shakes looked amazing. The workers were friendly and very nice. Will we return and try them again? Heck yes, but I will order something different on the menu. read more

Ok I dream about going back. Had the lemon raspberry custard and as a die hard chocolate person, this was the best choice I've made. Daughter said her fish sandwich from here was better than a place in Long Beach and price a couple of dollars cheaper. No indoor seating.
