My coworkers and I didn't realize Cushnoc was open until we walked by and saw that the place was booming. It appears they stealth-opened! I have to say, the remodel of the space is absolutely beautiful. The centerpiece of the room is a giant, hand-crafted communal table that looked like it was made from reclaimed wood. There was a neon sign on the wall that said "born on the Kennebec" and the lighting overall was beautiful. The back wall of the bar area had what looked like a reclaimed metal ceiling that had been a little distressed, which was absolutely gorgeous. There was a raised area with some tables at the end of the room that looked interesting. Over all, the interior is gorgeous and inviting. The huge crowd didn't feel like a bunch of people there separately or in small groups, it felt like a party where everyone was friends, and I think the decor really helps that feeling. On to the beer, because this is a brewery, after all. I ordered the Old Federal, which tasted so much like Allagash White-- smooth, a little smoky, a little citrusy, and delicious. Because I'd visited Circa 1886 prior to coming to Cushnoc, I only had the one beer, but so far, A+! The menu is well-balanced and has a selection of snacks, salads, and wood-fired brick-oven pizzas. All the pizzas have pithy names based on the area (The Rotary, Mill Park Pie, Sand Hill Classic, to name a few). I ordered the Diner Closes at 2, which, with the exception of the eggs, tasted so much like Otto's mashed potato pizza that I was in heaven, since Otto's is so far away. I loved the addition of egg, but I would have cooked them just a little less, for more yolky ooziness. The staff, despite it being incredibly busy, were attentive, friendly, and stopped to chat with customers. Because they were newly opened, there are, of course, some kinks to work out, and one of my party didn't get her order until long after we had finished, and the staff was incredibly apologetic about the inconvenience. To walk into a restaurant and get the feeling that it's been opened for a while (and the huge community turn out lends to this feeling) is a sign that they're doing something right. What a great hangout spot in downtown Augusta! For a brand new brewery/pizzeria, they're doing a lot of things right. Came with a group and ordered a few pizzas to share, all of which were delicious. My personal favorite was the Mill Park Pie, with its butternut squash, bacon, brussels, and balsamic all playing in perfect harmony. My fiancé loved the Rotary, which was spicy and flavorful. Every pizza on the table was excellent. Our drinks were also great. I got a hard cider on guest tap, while everyone else at the table enjoyed their beers. Prices are high for the size of the pizzas, and there is a bit too much crust on the ends for my liking. The toppings are so creative and delicious that I just wish they occupied more space on each slice. Service was very friendly despite them being swamped with people during dinner on Friday night. The space itself is trendy and cozy at the same time, with the warmth and congeniality of an established brewery. There is a huge communal table in the center of the restaurant for people like me who don't mind mingling with strangers. I love that you're able to see pizzas being made in the open kitchen and fed into their wood-fired oven, lovingly named Stacy. I'm sure we'll be back for more delicious pizza! read more

Finally! A brew pub and pizzeria in downtown Augusta. But wait, there's more... These guys serve excellent home-brewed beers, literally brewed right downstairs. Several guest taps and even some wines on tap make for a well-rounded draft selection. Their pizza is on point as well, with some really interesting choices (try the warm honey drizzled one, just do it, trust me). Or you can create your own with many different toppings to choose from. Cushnoc also offers gluten free pizza dough. The atmosphere is stunning. Gorgeous wooden tables, open concept dining, river views, and you can even watch their gorgeous wood-fired oven, "Stacy," as she bakes your pizzas to perfection. The casual yet classy vibes are most welcoming to all walks of life, and the long community table in the center of the restaurant invites anyone to sit together and enjoy the company of their neighbors. Other booths and small tables are also available for a more intimate seating arrangement. This restaurant is a most excellent addition to our capitol city, and it seems to have a promising future as well. I mean, pizza and beer, guys... am I right?? read more

Great food, the salads and pizza are both outstanding. We had both the Farmers Salad and the Side Salad and both were some of the best salads I've had in a long time. Beers are solid. Had a Berliner Weiss and a hazy-ish IPA, both stylistically correct and easy drinking. Decor and ambiance are good. The palace is spacious with high ceilings and the mezzanine has great river views. Only complaint is that the ceiling needs 3x more sound dampening panels (yes they have them, no it's not enough). Anyways, highly recommended. After my beloved Liberty Craft brewing closed it's doors for good, I've been searching for another special brewery with a certain magic in the beer and food. My word, this is it. Upon entry, you can see the history engraved in the walls and almost hear the voices of the past still conducting work on the old Kennebec rolling logs down the river. The pizzas are amazing and the beer is superb. NO DOGS........Not sure what to say. Was not allowed to eat here. We had 10 people and there was a table that could accommodate us. However, one of us had a dog, and that person, wanted to sit outside on an empty bench with the dog on the sidewalk. we were told there was a policy that no one could site outside with a dog. keep in mind that dogs were walking by the entire time. in fact, anyone could just sit on those benches with a dog. Although it was mid afternoon, our waiter did a great job of giving us just enough time to make our minds of what to order but still gave us great recommendations. We ended up ordering the Sand Hill Classic, Capital City and Mill Park Pie. All were really tasty, came out fast and were given two thumbs up. The crust was crunchy but had a nice chew and all the toppings complimented each other well. I'm glad to see a new, unique restaurant in downtown Augusta. The space feels like a typical brewery: a mix of various warm shades of wood, ample high-top and booth seating, and a overall modern/hipster feel. While I'm glad to see it's not overrun with cheesy, overdone restaurant decor, it did feel a bit impersonal and unoriginal. We were seated by a friendly, if socially awkward, server on a weekday after the lunch rush. He was nice, though it appeared he was visibly uncomfortable as if it were his first day as a waiter. The place was unsurprisingly empty and quite chilly. The three of us ordered hot tea and coffee, and were told they don't serve either, but they expected to add that to the menu soon? (they'd been open for 5 months at this point). The pizzas on the menu were unique and interesting, though they lacked vegetarian options other than a pie covered in banana (among other) peppers, which I tried. The crust was thin and well done, though the limp peppers were piled too high and weighed down the otherwise tasty thin crust. It was also unnecessarily greasy overall. I tried their own brewed Kresge, a kolsch style that felt right to pair with the pizza (and drink on a Wednesday at 2pm). It was light and crisp and the highlight of the entire visit. I'd go back again if I was visiting the area, as the menu items are more unique than standard fair and the beer was good, though I'd like to see them expand the menu a bit, up their service, and add a bit more personality. read more

This place is simply..eh. Not great, not horrible. My issue is that their beer is simply bland and tasteless. It hasn't changed since my first time here, and they have no desire to change. It leaves nothing to talk about. Their complete lack of beer variety is emblematic of their lack of experience in brewing. Their price points are out of touch with most micro-breweries in Maine. For instance, their porter (which lacks flavor and complexity) is $6 a glass. I can go to Sea Dog, Sebago or even Liberal Cup and get a better beer in a better environment (and a true pint) for $4. They seem to have lost sight that they are in dismal Downtown Augusta and not Portland or Bangor. My prediction, give it two more years and they are gone unless they change their model to reflect where they are and start brewing beer better than recipes I can get online from Youtube. All in all, with so many good options close by (Hallowell), this is a place I go to out of convenience (because Maine hasn't caught on to Uber yet), not because they have anything special. read more

We sat the bar and was greeted by Joc who was very friendly and attentive. We asked him what "Cushnoc" meant and why they spritzed the beer glasses before pouring the beer. He aced them and made out dining experience enjoyable. We had the imperial IPA very tasty. We really wanted Gigantic dad pants but not on tap. Our first visit was somewhat underwhelming, altho the hints at greatness will have us coming back. We just had to learn a couple bummer things to avoid or order differently next time. First, the atmosphere & decor is great, if loud. We started with the fire roasted nuts, "sweet, spicy and addictive" they were not. They were bland and not the least bit spicy. Also, we were expecting them to come toasty warm, not stone cold. Major disappointment. We built our pizza - smoked ricotta sauce, ipa caramelized onions, crispy pancetta & Brussels sprouts. Ordered some herbed white sauce on the side to try/dip crust in. The smoked ricotta sauce was AMAZING, the pizza crust was fluffy, light & thin, caramelized onions & pancetta was delicious - however the Brussels sprouts were nearly raw... hard and a bit bitter. Again, disappointing. If they had roasted the Brussels sprouts first, as we were expecting, it would have been divine! The rest of the pizza was absolutely delicious, we'd come back to give it another shot - just knowing to skip the Brussels sprouts. The side order of white herbed sauce came stone cold. Again, we were expecting it would be a warmed sauce for drizzling on the pizza or dipping... it was ice cold and rather bland. I do believe that warmed would have kicked up the flavor & likely been delicious... Knowing that, and we didn't think we needed to order it warmed... is a lesson learned for next time. We finished off with the skillet Choc chip cookie w/ice cream. That was hot, melty, sweet and worth every calorie. So overall, it was no more than a 3-star experience this time, but we'll be back to try it again without the bland nuts, raw Brussels sprouts & asking for our sauce warmed next time ;) read more

This is my new favorite place for pizza and beer. To clarify, this pizza is wood fired pizza cooked in-house in the oven lovingly named Stacey-homage to the former owner's iconic downtown business. They do not serve pizza between 3-4 as they perform daily maintenance on the oven. But don't worry there are plenty of yummy snacks to try. I recommend the popcorn, flavored daily, the quickles - an assortment of pickled veggies in a brine so tasty you'll want to drink it straight! (Which I do!) Of course the pizza delivers every time! The first pie I tried was The Fort Western - a homage to the fort across the river. This pie has a white sauce, mushrooms, arugula, panchetta, my nephew and I horked this down without coming up for air! The pizzas are all named after local icons. I believe there is a gluten free option. The atmosphere is hip and trendy/modern. There is a large family style table in the center of the space as well as many private tables and booths. I have two favorite spots, on at the front of the restaurant in the window over looking Water St. My daughter likes to sit at the back of the restaurant overlooking the Kennebec River and Memorial Bridge. Outstanding local views. Lots of different beer on tap, I have not tried them all, but my favorite is the cider. The restaurant is expanding to include a tasting room in the basement which is a cool concept especially in the old building. This has been a lively and welcome addition to Water Street in Augusta.
