Too hot. As in hot pepper hot. I tried 2 vegetarian items and the chicken tikka massala, and way too hot. The chicken wasn't tender in the tikka massala. The naan is good, and the two sauces they give, one being tamarind are refreshing flavors. It could be a cultural difference. It could be that this is how hot it is in India. I have lived in the Bay Area for 6 years now, and this place serves the BEST North Indian food I have EVER had. It's a shame It had not been open back in December or else I would have asked the owner if he could cater my wedding! I cannot say how much I love this place! I'm not the best "Indian food" cook. (I'm a White girl who married into an Indian family and I get a lot scolding for this lol.) I had my husband take me here on date a right after it opened a couple months ago and I couldn't have been more satisfied! I have probably eaten here at least 10x since. The decor is beautiful and modern. The restaurant is so clean. It's not a huge restaurant but it's not small either. It's the perfect size. The owner Ali, is SO NICE. Its family owned. His sons operate the register. It's such a nice place. Makes me feel at home. It's kid friendly. I can't tell you what my favorite meal is. But I do recommend the Tikka Masala, Nihari, and the Sheekh Kabab. Actually......scratch that. I recommend everything on the menu! I use to feel bad about not being able to cook Indian food to impress my in-laws. But Curry Leaf has made me feel glad about not being able to cook Indian food. So instead of me cooking terrible Indian food for dinner on a Friday night, I can now make my husband take me to eat delicious and authentic food at Curry Leaf instead. ;) Thank you Mr. Ali & Curry Leaf staff! Authentic, reasonably priced, and I really, really like their Palak Paneer, Lamb Vindaloo, Aloo Gobhi, and their nan is fantastic.

I don't know what's going. I'm guessing new chefs?? Very watery curries and not the same food as I once loved. Naan has not been moist, dry like its been put in a microwave. They had something really good for a while, I hope they bring back the old chefs. read more

I'm a big fan of Indian food and sadly, this is the worst Indian food I've ever had. The food was bland (ironic for Indian food). The portions are also small. Sunday was my first time coming here. My total bill was $17.37. After swiping my card the cashier handed me my merchant receipt and gave me a pencil to sign the copy. I looked at him and asked for a pen. Sketchy already. After he gave me a pen, I remember clearly writing $20 total on the receipt. However, after checking my credit card bill I noticed that my total amount has been altered. I feel like this is very sketchy for a restaurant to do that. You should ONLY charge the total amount, whether the customer wrote the specific tip amount or not. You do not add your own tip. I'm probably never coming here again. Got food poisoning from eating here last Saturday night! Both my roommate and I were vomiting mere hours after eating here. I eventually had to go to urgent care and almost the ER from pain that I have endured. We had chicken tikka masala, tandoori fish and lamb kebab. Never again, Curry leaf. read more

Looks like a fast food buffet style place when you first walk in but this would be a wrong perception. This is a sit down restaurant with some of the best Indian food you will ever experience. Alright folks, looks like I will be the first one to review this place who is not on the payroll. I wish the owners the best, but my bet, this place will be gone in 3 months or less. It's a shame, as North Beach could really use some solid Indian food. First, maybe my expectations were way too high, but I am using Lahore Karahi (Tenderloin - before the original owner left) and Rajjot Sweet & Snacks in Sunnyvale as a baseline here, if you have never been to Rajot, highly recommend it. Food - While they missed our third naan order, giving us two instead of 3, we did receive everything we ordered. Saag Chana - Probably my least favorite dish of the evening. The chickpeas tasted liked they had come out of a can 5 minutes ago, and could be used as a base for hummus. The spinach tasted similarly awful. If I wanted terrible Saag, I could easily go buy some frozen from Trader Joes for a quarter of the price. Unspiced, bland, and not served very hot as well. Bengan Bharta - Usually my favorite dish, by far the best item we had of the evening, yet still very poorly spiced, very little flavor, nothing to savor, and served colder than I would have liked. Garlic Naan / Onion Nan - Decent, but still lacking in flavor, and thicker than I would prefer. If the Naan doesn't have a cracker crust and slight char, I'm not happy, but if you prefer thicker Naan, this will fit the bill. Tandoori Fish - A joke on a plate. I am sorry, but when I pay $12 for tandoori fish, i expect more than a couple slices of fish, some raw (RAW) onions, and no spice. There was absolutely no flavor, the fish was cold on the plate when it was served, and for the price, it was the worst dish on the table. Karahi Gosht - Man, I love lamb. I really love it, so when you serve me lamb that is under spiced, with a couple vegetables thrown in for good measure as an afterthought, when they were obviously not cooked with the curry itself, it's gonna be terrible. Food Overall - Terrible, the only thing worth ordering if you were forced to go is Bengan Bharta. All poorly spice, poorly portioned, and served way too cold. Seriously, if you the dishes aren't hot, whats the point? Service Overall - Self service, which I am totally fine with. You have to get your plates, silverware, water, etc. Awesome, fully onboard, but not when you are going to charge full service prices. Prices - If the food was good, I wouldn't mind. If the service was great, I wouldn't mind. But you get neither good food, nor any service, for the price you are paying. End Result - Why? Go to Trader Joes, buy some microwavable curry, throw it out, and then go to a decent restaurant, save yourself the disappointment and the money. I hate leaving reviews this bad, but I wanted to save the community from a new spot with few reviews. I wish the owners the best, as they seem genuinely excited, and know how much energy it can take to open a new place, but your efforts might be better spent elsewhere. read more

I have been on a continuous exploration for a go-to Indian restaurant since i moved to SF three years ago. I have sampled 20+ restaurants, including Pakwan, Lahore, Shalimar, Aslam's Rasoi, and Amber India, many multiple times, and Curry Leaf is definitely #1 for me. The owner and staff are very welcoming and friendly, adding a warm personal touch. Our to-go order was packed on time, efficiently and accurately. I ate several standards for Indian/Pakistani cuisine: the samosas were very tasty, perfectly dry (not oily) and flaky. the tandoori chicken and seekh kabob(chicken) were cooked very well and were very flavorful. Good saag paneer is hard to find, and at Curry Leaf it was great. The tikka masala is probably the best in SF. Overall the food hits levels of perfection with its fresh, flavorful cuisine. North Beach and the Hills definitely are in need of a good Indian restaurant, and it looks like we finally have it. read more

For what it is, this place is AMAZE-BALLS!! This is the best Indian takeaway in the Bay, by far. Casual spot - good for "omg I've been walking around this city all day and I just want to sit down and eat - now". Good variety and some nice twists (adding mint to the chicken biryani - mmm mmmm!). You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. It's BYOB but there are 2 bottle shops just across the street so no worries. I love curry and have eaten at many places throughout the bay area. Wait wasn't too long,kitchen was clean, restaurant floor was clean and last but not least the food was delicious. Typical Indian/Pakistani restaurant, you order with them at the front and sit down. You get your water,plates & utensils and prepare for them to serve you piping hot deliciousness. Their chicken tikka masala and paneer masala was full of flavor and spiced to perfection. The chicken tikka was tender..tasty morsels of goodness.
