Just flew into the EST from California and staying at the hotel here. My love interest has frequented this hotel and restaurant and said we gotta eat here. Very nice sophisticated ambiance, nice wine selection and view of the water as well.. I ordered the Cuban sandwich, Buffalo wings and my gf got the salmon. The Cuban and fries stood no chance cause I was starving lol.. I tried the salmon as well and it checks out. I'd recommend to anybody that's curious about ordering it. All around great experience as our waitress crystal was very attentive, patient and maintained top quality customer service. I wouldnt cross the country to eat here, but.... if you're nearby or staying on the property.. you'd be a fool to overlook this gem on the water. read more

Bottom line: it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. It's definitely the only restaurant that is around within a 3-block radius that is open after 7 p.m. so consider that prior to looking elsewhere. The food was good but nothing to really write home about. Recommend it here if you are feeling a bit lazy and want to stay in or if you want to get something quick that's not fast-food. Venue: relatively medium sized with tiered floor seating arrangements. The full bar is small with one bartender and they look really busy on prime nights (Friday/Saturday). Service: a bit slow. Like everywhere else these days, they are short staffed so the service lags a bit. Its good for those that have good company and or some time to burn. Not good for those looking for something quick and or short of time. Food: the short ribs were bland and over cooked. I spent a lot more time on the fries and their spicy aioli, which was good. If the restaurant: 1) makes you feel so happy that you would not hesitate to come back, and 2) you would not mind to recommend it to your friends, I believe it sould earn five stars. Based on my visit, this venue at the Hyatt Regency in Sarasota, Florida, complies with the abovementioned principle clearly. At the time I entered, the venue was not too crowded. The menu is relatively short, with the essential genres. After all the traveling, I went for a ribeye. The 36 usd versus the quality was well on a par. In fact, I was surprised how juicy, tender, and flavorful the steak was. It did not require any additional seasoning nor sides as the included asparragus and few fried potato slices provided just about an ideal balance with the key note player of the plate. The only incredient that adds up to the value of this one was a good glass of cab. I can only wish my own barbequeing resulted in the same sensation. Finalizing the evening with a flourless chocolate cake with amarena cherries and a shot of espresso, there is really not too much to do to make one happier. read more

We ate breakfast here after spending the night at the hotel. The corned beef hash with poached eggs and homestyle potatoes was very good. My husband had the three egg ham, bacon & cheese omelette which he enjoyed as well. Our server did a good job and was very friendly. The view overlooking the pool and water was pleasant as well. Breakfast: I am a weirdo who doesn't like runny poached eggs on my eggs Benedict. And so often when I ask for hard-poached eggs, the kitchen can't seem to get it right. Well Currents, located in the Hyatt Regency, got it right. It's a small detail, I know, but when it comes to breakfast, where so many restaurants serve the same thing, it's these details that matter. Had a chance to do lunch while waiting for a room ENTRANCE - just after the breakfast rush so waited a bit b4 being seated. WAITRESS - Millie was the best. Took our orders promptly and with exceptional professionalism. MENU - not a large selection and very eclectic choices FOOD - for hotel cuisine what was served was super good. I had the fish tacos made with mahi-mahi that was so good. Brother had Berger that was perfectly prepared and the fries I am told were very good. This restaurant was in the Hyatt we stayed at during the Yelp Event weekend as no rooms were available during that time at the Ritz. We first came here for a drink in the bar area. It was a bad day for the bartender. A group of people who were there too long and monoplizing all the seats, had him rattled so when my hubby ordered a Lilly Martini for methe bartender gave him the stink eye. Once a seat opened up we "bellied up" When I ordered a second one the bartender starting telling me how the bar wasn't set up to make drinks like that and whoever made the drink menu didn't now what he was doing. Wow, thanks for happily making my drink thank you. however after the event we were starving and opted for appetizers here. We tried the porkbelly ($12) served with a smokey polenta, oragnic grape tomatoes and arugula. This was a very nicely done plate. Hubby had the buttner squash soup with banana bread croutons. ($9) It was very good as well. Tempted to stay for dinner we opted for room service back in our suite (and what a suite it was, see my other review at the hyatt Regency Sarasota) i have to say the food here was quite good, the service almost formal (that's good) and the atmosphere clean and clear. We boated to the Hyatt for dinner. We walked in and saw a bar, not realizing it was the restaurant, Currents. But, it was! And what a treat. The employees were so personable and outgoing. We really enjoyed all of them. Even the customers were nice. We ordered drinks. They made a wonderful Margarita. Then we talked about food, asked for recommendations and settled on fish tacos and conch chowder. Delicious cheese rolls came along with our conch chowder. The soup was pretty amazing. Are fish tacos had slaw and a homemade salsa verde. Really scrumptious. I'm so glad we stopped by and met Alla and Bobby! Bobby has been with Hyatt for 35 years! read more

Stayed at the hotel for a few nights for work and so ate here throughout the week. First night I ordered the caprese flatbread - came with four slices and was delicious. The young lady who delivered it to my room was very friendly. My only complaint is that they charge a delivery fee of $4.50 - kind of outrageous. Second night I had the truffle fries and clam chowder. This place has the best clam chowder I've ever had. It was fresh and tasty. Truffle fries were delicious and came with a ton. Third night I ordered the truffle fries again (they were that good!) and an order of the honey garlic chicken wings. The chicken wings come with 10 and they are huge! I wish they had been cooked a bit longer. The sauce was very good. Margaret helped me both nights I ate down at the bar, she was extremely friendly and attentive! read more

This review is mainly for the breakfast, brunch and related buffet at Currents Restaurant (located inside the Hyatt Regency Sarasota). Many of the Yelp reviews raved about this venue, so I expected the breakfast brunch to be pretty good. Our room at the Hyatt included room credit and breakfast options, so we decided to give it a try. I didn't realize I was setting myself up for a let down. Average buffet at best. Most breakfast buffets contain the same thing: a variety of pastries, breakfast cereals, fruits, some sort of scrambled egg, sausage/bacon, bagels and one of the following: pancakes, waffles/waffle maker, omelette station, french toast or something along those lines. To be fair, this buffet did contain most of those elements, but the execution was flawed. There was always something missing.... like bowls to put the cereal/oatmeal into. All three days we went to breakfast.... no bowls... except for two that had dried crusted food on them. Three days in a row-- no bowls except for two crusted ones? How is that possible? The first day, there was no pancake/french toast/waffle/etc option at all. I asked about omelette options and pancakes or french toast options with the buffet. I was told I could order them a la carte if I wanted. Looking at the prices, I noted that the breakfast buffet was $19 (including coffee, juice), pancakes only was $14, french toast was $14, a cup of coffee was $5, OJ was $4, side of fruit was $5. Given that my son loved fruit and I needed coffee, I did the math and just went with the buffet. The buffet itself was lean. A pot of Scrambled Eggs, Potatoes, Bacon/Sausage, Croissants, a plate of Honeydew, Watermelon, Cantaloupe, a plate of chocolate bread, assorted dry cereals, oatmeal (and accoutrements) and toasts/bagels. No assorted pastries, no assorted flavored breads, no variety of jellies/cream cheeses. The second day, suddenly the same waitress asked how we wanted our omelette that is included in the buffet. And there was french toast in today's buffet, except that the pot was perpetually empty. And, of course, no bowls for the oatmeal or cereal (except for the two crusted ones). I asked several people for additional bowls (again) and for french toast- I was repeatedly told,"It's coming." Except it didn't. I finally sat down and pestered the waitress about the french toast and bowls- she was sweet enough to bring both. The third day we tried again. Same issues. No bowls. No specialty egg option of the day. We went to ordered our coffee and OJ, went to look at the buffet, checked out the a la carte options again, then canceled our drink order. Forget the included breakfast and the included credit with our rooms. We went somewhere else. **Note: We ordered spaghetti and meatballs our first night for the kids from here- it was great. The kids devoured it. I had a taste and it was pretty good for a hotel meal. We also ordered the vegetable quesidilla from here for them another day. That was fine as well. read more

I was staying at Hyatt for business for a couple weeks. The whole team at Currents treated me like family and really made me feel right at home. The menu is very well rounded and provides a more elevated dining experience, impressive for a hotel restaurant. One thing I noticed is s lot of locals come here for family events and or regulars, I think that says a lot about an establishment when locals frequent the venue. Alex, Tim, Bobby, Margaret, Susan, allá were all so pleasant and remembered my drink order every time I came in. The chefs were on point and on multiple evenings they made me off menu items to mix it up since I had been here for a while. Warning!! The key lime pie is to die for... the crust and fluffy cream inside with a slight zest is truly addicting. I will be coming back to this restaurant next time on my travels to Sarasota. After a long flight from Denver we wanted somewhere convenient to eat. What better than somewhere less than a hop skip and a jump away. We looked it up on Yelp and the reviews were a little concerning but we were far too tired to look at other options. "What the hell" we said! After ordering we had a good experience. Food was good, service was great and we have no major complaints. If I had to give one criticism,it would be portions. For what I paid for my meal I would have enjoyed a larger portioned meal. I haven't sat down to write a Yelp review in, seriously, YEARS. In fact, I don't ever do so unless a) a place is wonderful or 2) a place is heinous. Unfortunately this place was heinous... Lackluster service. Terrible food. Upscale Waffle House decor. I could go into specifics (like, the risotto had no trace of salt; the crispy red snapper was all but and rubbery, overcooked; the pork belly seemed neither pork nor belly; the waiter took 15 minutes to deliver drinks in an all but empty restaurant...) but to re-live the experience, in all fairness, would not be fair to me. On a brighter side, my mother-in-law's burger looked vaguely edible but I know a guy, somewhere, who could do it just as well for a fraction of the cost and time spent. I beg you, people who I don't know and never will...SAVE. YOUR. MONEY. Go next door to Jack Dusty's at the Ritz Carlton. Walk downtown and eat, well, just about anywhere. You'll be better off. PS. We stayed at the Hyatt for our Sarasota trip and Currents is the restaurant that is located in there hotel. We tried dinner and breakfast at the restaurant and were very disappointed. The dinner was mediocre. My husband and I are vegetarians and there were only two entree options: pasta or garden burger. We got one of each and we're extremely disappointed. The garden burger tasted as if they just warmed up a frozen Boca burger and the pasta was just awful with no flavor. The next morning we tried their breakfast. They have a continental breakfast that just includes cold items and no eggs. If you want eggs you have to order from the menu. Again not a lot of variety on the menu which is disappointing seeing as how this is a five star hotel. Both dinner and breakfast menu are extremely over priced. It's better to just go to downtown Sarasota for much better and tastier food options. read more

I wish I could give this a 3.5 star rating. We ate here a few times while staying at the Hyatt Regency. The first night we ate here for dinner after a long day and not wanting to go out. Sadly, there were several items on the menu that were not available that night. We worked with our waiter and the chef to make a delicious tuna appetizer with what they did have. My husband had a steak that he said was surprisingly very good, and I loved the salmon! Our waiter even gave us two complimentary desserts for the troubles, which we never expected. Even the desserts were delicious!! Alex was our server and he was great! The next morning we stopped in for breakfast. My husband had the buffet and I ordered a benedict. My food took almost 40 minutes to come out, I believe our server forgot to put my order in. She never apologized for the delay and wasn't very attentive. The customer service that day was awful - I don't even know our servers name (probably best for her). The next time we were here was the day we left the hotel for breakfast. We were seated quickly and our server was quick and got everything correct. I ordered eggs and pancakes and there was so much food I couldn't eat all my pancakes! Inside of Hyatt Regency Sarasota is a hidden gem called Currents, a restaurant that embraces the farm to fork movement. Executive Chef Leo Gianulis' and team really know how to impress. Upon reviewing the menu, I instantly knew that we had to order the Pork Belly. This Pork Belly came from Niman Ranch and was served with a smoked cheddar grit cake, apple reduction and frisée salad. I am a huge fan of pork belly and this was Gabe's first encounter with it. I believe I may have created a monster. Not to mention, the grit cake was pretty awesome. When it was time to place our order, I had a bit of a problem deciding what to order. While there was a particular fish on the menu that was calling out to me, my eyes kept going back to the pork chop - which is something I would never order at a restaurant. So I asked our server to surprise me and out came this masterpiece, a Niman Ranch Pork Chop that was hickory-smoked, served with amazing crispy brussel sprouts, natural bacon, maple-apple jam. I do not think there has been a time in my life that I went cross-eyed over a pork chop before until this very moment. It was beyond tender and juicy, absolute perfection. If you find yourself in Sarasota, PLEASE do yourself a favor....go to Currents, order the pork chop and enjoy this moment with me. Gabe ordered the Niman Ranch NY Steak Frites. While he enjoyed his meal, he found himself having major food jealousy over my pork chop. Between the size of the steak and the monsterous pork chop, we found ourselves very full. Then Chef de Jour came out and asked us if we saved room for dessert. Technically we didn't but we fibbed and it was one of the better white lies I have ever told in my life. Out comes culinary magic..... "Spiced Resees Pieces" - peanut butter mousse, peanut butter powder, chocolate almond brittle, dried aleppo pepper and creme draishe. "Mint Infused" Chocolate pot de creme - Hazelnut tea "caviar", creme fraishe, fried mint leaves. Over the past month, we have truly indulged in amazing foods and desserts. This dessert was far superior to anything we had on our recent trip to New Orleans. I loved the fact that the Chef''s at Currents think outside of the box while delivering. On a recent trip to Sarasota for a conference, a colleague and I found ourselves out of time for lunch. So, we popped up to the lobby for Currents. I ordered the popcorn tempura shrimp and the truffle fries. She ordered the sparerib sliders. Both of us were more than satisfied with it all. I loved how my shrimp was served with popcorn and a drizzle of sriracha sauce. The fries were fabulous, too! I made them better with a dip of blue cheese. My friend loved her sliders. I did knock them off a star, because the food was pretty slow coming out. Otherwise, it was fantastic. read more

Not a single complaint! I couldn't figure out how to use the salt and pepper shakers because they were so modern. The waitress saw me struggling and I was of course, mortified! She just came over and helped me and laughed when I said, "Let's just pretend that didn't happen." I was relieved to see most of the other guests had the same problem. The food was great! So disappointed in our meal. My boyfriend ordered the chicken cheesesteak. The meat tasted leftover like it was cooked the day before. You could probably find a better cheesesteak in a cafeteria. The truffle fries were the best part of the meal. I had a make your own meal with lukewarm shrimp, partially microwaved mashed potatoes and a pesto sauce. The pesto sauce was good. Worst service ever! It took over 45 minutes for 2 entrees which by the way, there were only 8 other patrons there. Food was overcooked and burned. Manager said he would comp the meal or offer free dessert. We asked to comp but then he didn't take off our sodas which we didn't get any refills & had to pay almost $9 for 2 sodas. Then the chef came out and offered free dessert anyway which we said ok but then the waitress came out and told us the manager said no dessert. So as we get up to leave, the chef brings us dessert and said that he told the manager that he was giving us the dessert which was nice. The food here was fantastic. I had the arugula salad followed by the corvina (which was a new fish I hadn't tried before) and it was wonderful. The fish was buttery and came with a cannellini bean and chorizo stew. It was a hearty meal that I was very pleased with. I finished off the meal with a deconstructed cheesecake that looked like a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was sitting atop diced strawberries covered in balsamic glaze. Delicious! Don't waste your money. The service was mediocre, which surprised me as we were in the Hyatt and I expected more. But I figured the meal would redeem our hostess and waitstaff. The menu looked promising, with lots of emphasis on 'fresh' and creativity. The arrival of everything, including the wines we ordered, was very slow. But it was going to be a great meal right? Not so. Mediocre green salad, truffle fries boring and out of a bag obviously, my friend with the mushroom melt was happy, my other friend with the calamari left half on her plate. We agreed the chef vegetable of the day was excellent. The REAL disappointment was the flourless chocolate cake - definitely not fresh, too sweet, with a ghastly sauce drizzled in it that tasted like cough syrup. Swing and a miss. One would think that a lovely looking restaurant overlooking a marina on the West Coast of Florida would "ace" coconut shrimp. Come on guys. Perfectly shaped (read: commercial/frozen/big plastic bag) mini shrimp somewhere under that crust does not work. To add insult to injury, no orange marmalade with horseradish? Chili sauce? I can't write any more about this. I also had the Florida salad featuring grapefruit and field greens which was very nice. Ok i can write more. Good eats for breakfast! Omelettes are my jam and yum- they like to do them a little well done for my taste but were happy to oblige when I asked for light and fluffy. Fresh fruit, bacon, pancakes, muffins, potatoes- what's not to love? Friendly staff welcomed us each morning of our stay and the lobby bar provided great drinks to top off our evening. They also offered desserts! Our bartender recommended the pecan melt. Sweet, warm pecan tart with vanilla bean ice cream topped with caramel and pecans- a treat I look forward to enjoying again soon! read more

This restaurant is lovely! The atmosphere is chic yet comfortable and the food was to die for. I've never had calamari quite like it! Absolutely my favorite of all time. And the NY Strip special with blue cheese scallop potatoes and rapini by Chef Karen Sandoval was unforgettable. She even came out to chat with us, a very lovely and friendly Chef with excellent knowledge of fine cuisine and a very approachable and smiley personality. My first time at Currents was weeks ago, this review is much belated, but I will definitely be returning to see what else that wonderful Chef has in store!! read more

I have no idea what goes on at the buffet, but for a nice dinner out, I love coming here. One of the very few actual grass fed burgers in town and a nice, rotating menu of seasonal options. Walking in, you go past the really nice looking Hyatt pool, and someday I am going to swim in it (another review, for sometime in the future). The restuarant itself isn't especially fancy, but walks the line between being the type of place you could get "dressed" to go to and the type of place you can cruise into wearing post-beach garb. Service is always excellent and waiters at least act like they remember me (which, hey, counts!). Food is nicely presented, as well. read more

I think the inconsistent reviews are from the inconsistent clientele and expectations of staying at a Hyatt. Let's first and foremost point out that the bar is open til midnight and they serve food up to that point. They have a happy hour and great bar snacks. Alla is the greatest bartender. She is caring, attentive and very funny. She makes a great cocktail too. Derek, the manager, was very helpful in mapping out things to do in Sarasota. Apparently, people have given poor reviews on the food....I had a wonderful Caesar salad and conch chowder. I also had the crab cakes late night after everything closed down which were great. Lastly, I had a very tasty burger. My problem is I am from Vegas so I am used to late night eating and restaurants in Sarasota do stop serving food mostly at 10 (there were some late night options but this youngish female is not walking around anywhere close to midnight no matter how safe the city it). I felt the service was great and the food was consistent that always hit the spot especially late night. read more

The worst food I have had in Sarasota since I moved here. Terrible, terrible, terrible. The Greek salad was so inedible I had to send it back. My companion's fried shrimp was tasteless. The couple we came with agreed. In fact, a complaint to the manager is in the works. On the positive side, the waitpeople were friendly and tried to be helpful. They do have the ugly habit of wanting to remove someone's plate when other people are still eating. One other thing...we were the only people in the restaurant on a Friday night.
