To be honest, I don't ever buy consignment. I'm a pretty smart shopper and don't feel the need to purchase pre-owned because of it. My only comment is that for re-sale, the items are INCREDIBLY overpriced. $100 for a pre-worn mid-level designer dress is twice what it should be. If you go to Nordstrom Rack or Bloomingdale's during a sale, you're bound to find a better value. My comment is about the consignment process. They don't leave you with an itemized receipt or a copy of the inventory they take (I took a picture of the items they accepted so I remembered) and they don't tell you upfront how much they are selling the item for, which is so shady. Because of that, there is no honor system--they could price the item at whatever value they feel and you, as the consignor, don't have the ability to veto that and take the item back once its in their possession. The only reason I chose to consign there is because I wanted the items out of my apartment--if I was really looking to recoup money on what I bought, I'd be better selling through an online consignment store like Tradesy or Poshmark. And how they pick the clothes? 1000% subjective based on who you get when. They passed on a ton of tagged and unworn items from designers like Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors, but they sell H&M? Most people who buy consignment are more inclined to buy name brands with proof the item isn't worn. Come on, Current Boutique. You can do better than this. read more

There are three second-hand stores on this 3/4 mile stretch of 14th St. between N and V Streets - Current, Buffalo Exchange, and Crossroads. Current is definitely the worst of the three. They have a large selection of clothing/handbags/etc. - but it is not well curated, and it is extremely overpriced. It seems as if their strategy is to buy everything with a name brand, no matter how old or out of style, and charge 10-20% less than the item would have cost brand new. Not worth it. Their racks are full of Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, BCBG, etc., but most of the items are 5-10 years old, and no longer remotely in style. Last time I was in I was looking for a wallet, and stumbled across a Kate Spade patent leather wallet that they probably sold in stores 3-5 years ago. $80. You could get a better deal on a NEW wallet at the Kate Spade outlet or during of their sales. I passed. The new clothing and accessories they sell are also fairly generic and cheap-looking. I attempted to sell some clothing to Current when I moved in May. The woman at the front desk very condescendingly explained that they are "true consignment" shop and what that entails. What that entails is a gigantic pain in the butt for you, the seller. You wait three months, and if you're lucky (and you remember to call or return to the store), you receive a nominal payment for the items that were sold (and only the ones that were sold). I sold the items rejected by Current to Crossroads up the street - they were much friendlier and more accommodating (they went through my clothes while I brunched next door), and I got my payment (roughly equivalent percentage-wise to Current's) right then and there. If you're in the 14 St. area looking to do some second-hand shopping, I would leave Current off of your list, or at least leave it for last. Definitely don't bother selling anything here. read more

I am so relieved to see other sellers are as unhappy with I am by Current's system. I've consigned at a lot of places before and I've never *not* received an itemized receipt for clothing left behind without payment. (If they're paying you up front, sure, no itemized receipt is ok because they'll go through each item with you and your transaction is over..) I started taking my clothes to Current years ago and hated that lack of transparency from the start, so much so that several times I vowed to never go back again. But at the time, being without a car and in downtown DC area, my options were limited. (There is Secondi in Dupont Circle but I have issues with them too, plus they seem to skew a lot older...) I would echo the sentiments of other people here to take your true designer items elsewhere because you'll have virtually no way of knowing if they sold or how much they're sold for. Never-worn classic Louboutins, left in the hands of people who have every incentive to keep the entire profit and no real way to follow upon it? No thanks. Also, just an fyi, if you are determined to get them to take your clothes, try again with the rejects. I've had a slew of great items rejected (by someone who was new, I think) and I just waited and went back when someone else was sorting through them, or took them to the Arlington location, and had them accepted without issue. read more

I wish I could give Current a better review. It's true, I've seen some really neat things here-better than a lot of the "consignment" and "vintage" in DC- but I am astounded by their prices. When a designer item is SOOO many years behind (but not enough to be "vintage") you expect a little bit of a discount. Also when the items don't move, you expect the prices to discount a little. I used to have an annual event that I needed a fancy dress for, and I kid you not, they would have the same dresses year in, year out here at Current. Now that's just silly. I eventually stopped going. To ALL their locations. There just isn't enough turn over to justify my time spent looking! And as someone who has consigned with them, I can say definitively that I would rather them mark down the THREE items of mine that they have had for more than TWO YEARS and give me some store credit or some cash instead of nothing at all. I think any reasonable business practice would say some sale is better than sitting on the same stock year in, year out, especially on something with such a flimsy expiration date as fashion. This review is for my experience consigning. First, when you consign your items, you do not get an itemized receipt. You get absolutely nothing from them. You have to write down, by hand, on one of their charts, the items you are consigning. I was nervous about not being given any type of receipt, so I took a picture of this. That apparently wasn't good enough. Current will not break down for you what sells and when. They have a chart online that you can check but it will not specify when each individual item sold - only which items are still for sale and those that have sold. The worst part was when I discovered one of my items for sale publicly for more than what they were indicating to me privately on my list of items. Essentially, this would enable them to give less than 50% to their clothing donors and make a higher profit. If the item is listed on the website at $50 and they tell you they are selling it for $38, you'll get half of that number - not what they actually sold it for. Do they think people won't notice? Essentially when you consign items with Current, you're trusting them with an honor system of giving you 50% of what they sell for. That's IF they are honest about it, which I can now say with certainty that they are not. On top of that, they only let you ask for a check every 90 days. And they charge you a $1 'fee' to write you one. Maybe they could take the $1 out of the extra money they are making taking advantage of sellers. It is disgraceful on their part. Plus, I cashed out at the very beginning of December and now, nearly 3 months later, the website is telling me I have to wait another 80 days to request another check. So now they think they can withhold my money completely by forging what looks like a system glitch? I will NEVER consign with Current again and am considering filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau to force them to confront their dishonest practices. *edit* You can see from the business owner's response to this review that they are in denial and trying to paint me as a liar by chalking my experience up to "confusion". The hallmark of shady business practice is attempting to portray negative press as 'misunderstanding'. It is doubly inappropriate to reply to a customer's review and contradict rather than apologize or attempt to remedy the situation. So now it is a customer's word against a business owner's - who will people reading believe? What I am saying is FACT, I have no reason to be deceptive. Other consignors' negative reviews here prove this. Finally, if records are so important, they should PROVIDE them to ALL consignors at the time that they consign. Problem solved. Then they wouldn't have to come on Yelp and respond to all of these negative reviews defending a business that is clearly lacking. I love me some Current Boutique. It's kind of neat that they also sell a new brand of super cute stuff in the front of the store, but it's oh so pricey and oh so not what this former contractor turned waiter to be an artist can afford. So, I've been working on this project lately, some of you may be familiar with the book The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron - the book that has changed a lot of lives to the more awesome. Anyway, don't want to get on too much of a tangent, but I went on an artist date, which is where you go off exploring, take a class, go to a show, sit in the park and doodle - whatever, but alone and get to know you. It's taking yourself on a date. My date was going vintage shop hopping and it ended here. Apparently, my inner artist loves sun dresses and I left with 2 from this store - so very adorable designer for way cheap that I get loads of compliments on. I also left with 3 from Frugalista, which is cheaper, but there is way more sorting to do. I really did find some gems there too. The way Current works, is consignment, so you will find some really cute designer stuff at 1/3 the price. The fashionista that drops it off makes money, so does Current and you get a great deal. read more

I guess this place is fine. They tend to have higher-end items than the used clothing stores I frequent, where finding a designer item is like finding a hidden gem, but I also think this place is overpriced, especially given that you will have to hunt for what you want. Their racks are overcrowded, and you need to make sure you are well-fed and hydrated before you dive in. Aside from a pair of cheap sunglasses, I have never found anything that I'd willingly pay their prices for. I'd rather strike gold at another, lower-priced store than try to justify spending as much as they like to charge for used clothing. This consignment shop is unique in that they act as part boutique with new clothes and gently used consigned clothes. They have a good selection of new clothes (comparable to Violet Boutique). While I recognize they have big name brand clothes, the used clothes are still priced a little high (pricier than Buffalo Exchange in some instances). I could probably get a cheaper price at the outlet. Also, I tried to sell once on a weeknight and it was pretty quick. I tried to sell on a Saturday and I was waiting two hours only to realize they'd already said no to my items. Wish they had a name call system to let sellers know. My girlfriends and I come in here almost every two weeks to browse the newly consigned goods. I watched a friend try on a dress, and decided not to buy it because it was too pricey. I ended up calling Current a few days later and seeing if the dress was still there to buy it as a gift. I didn't know the brand or any major details - just the color, pattern, and basic style.The salespeople searched through all the merchandise, found it, called me back immediately, and had it on hold for me to pick up later that day! I no longer shop at Current Boutique. I have purchased both consignment and new items there in the past but I'm really over it. The consignment items aren't always well-inspected and the lighting doesn't allow for a good review of items in all parts of the store. Once I noticed a bleach stain on a black jacket at the register and the cashier said, "Luckily you saw that now because there are no returns." The worst part of my experience, however, was that their no returns policy also applies to new items. I bought a cropped jacket there for an event I was working one day and it SPLIT OPEN DOWN THE BACK DURING THE EVENT. It was mortifying when my love-to-point-out-your-shortcomings colleague told me about it just as my client was beginning to speak. I missed the most important part of the event while I changed into a mis-matched jacket that was in my dry cleaning for the rest of the evening. When I brought the jacket back to the store, I was appalled at the cashier's response that, no, they don't take returns, but she would see if she could get it sent to the tailor to be repaired. Great! So no apology for the horrible experience and I'm stuck with a cheaply made garment that's been srepaired? Thanks. I made it clear that I would leave my jacket to get repaired but that I was not at all satisfied with the solution and asked her to pass it on to her team. A couple of weeks later I started getting voicemails from a girl who sounded really annoyed that I hadn't been in to pick up my jacket yet. I eventually did so, and promptly donated it. Now I don't even stop here if it is the closest store (which it is for many in DC, and the only reason I'm giving two stars instead of one) and I'm desperate for something new. yucky. read more

I am very happy about having Current in the neighborhood! It has friendly staff, excellent selection of both new and consigned goods, and great for a budget shopper. I also love the outfit ideas they put on display and have definitely purchased a thing or two right from the mannequin. Love the jewelry, too. When you consign, they mark the pieces down at least 50% from what you paid, and will not accept anything less than pristine condition or more than 2 years old. I took in a silk top from Banana and hadn't noticed a miniscule pull near the bottom of the back, but the salesperson did! I appreciate that all of the pieces have been analyzed that strictly, so it does not turn into a thrift store (not that I don't also love thrift stores, but not for my duds). Current is a great way to stock up your closet with high quality basics or stay trendy with the latest fashions without breaking your bank. read more

Caveat: I have only shopped here, I haven't consigned. They often have things I love to gawk at, but only once have I found something I liked to buy. Out of the 7 times I have visited, I've purchased once. Granted, they are an amazing pair of JCrew hassle black and cognac loafers, I wish I could count on this place for clothing. UPDATE: Based on the reply from the owner I have tentatively changed my review from a one star review to a three star review. I do understand that mistakes can happen but I am not convinced that the larger operational issues will be resolved. Earlier this year I had another experience in which clothes that I sold were accidently listed under another person's account. The associate did not check the phone number and someone happened to have the same name as me. I do appreciate that the business is now attempting to address the issue of the FRYE boots, but I hope the owner takes this opportunity to review store practices and improve them as well. I have sold many items at Current Boutique and I have purchased many items from their store. However, after a recent experience I will not shop or sell to Current Boutique again. I think they have questionable business practices and poor customer service. In January 2020 I brought in a pair of FRYE boots to sell that were brand new (in the box) that I had paid $400 for originally. In July I noticed that the boots were missing from my account and I was told they they had been donated. According to the manager the boots were donated when she was not at the store because they were "damaged on the floor" but she could not provide any additional information because there were no other notes. While the manager did acknowledge that she would be upset in my position she pointed out that the contract states that the store is not responsible for items damaged on the floor and she did not offer any solutions. Based on this experience I would not recommend that you take any items of value to sell at this store. There are other local consignment stores that you can work with that have better practices and there are a number of online retailers that take better care of the items they are selling. I am appalled by Current Boutique's response and the lack of accountability from their store managers and owners. This is not a local business worth supporting. read more

I am definitely the target market- 20 something's (maybe even 30's and early 40's), with higher end style. I would say that it's not really for teenagers or women over 50 years old. Nothing for children or men and I didn't see any plus sizes... Not that I was looking or anything... The clothes are preppy so none of that cheap stuff. Lots of cute shoes and dresses! I got a cute skirt for $10 but don't be surprised when you see some tags go up to $150! Overall, I'd say it was worth a look, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

Current... it's more like split personalities! I mean, the new clothes are up front and then the not so current... kinda current... a bit current consignment section is in the back. All of the new clothes are super cute! The majority of the new items are dresses and that's right up my clothes alley! While some may not have necessarily fit my body type, there was something for everyone. Most of the brands they carry I'm familiar with and usually you have to size up, so just keep that in mind. The consignment section of the shop is way bigger than the new section. I'd say it takes up about 75% of the store. While I find consignment shoes to always look "worn," they have a pretty decent selection. The clothes I went through were all in great condition. No holes, snags or stains visible, which is a good thing! I also think the store is set-up to be very shopper friendly. It's split up between jackets, dresses, pants and tops. But then there's also subcategories like event dresses, blazers and jackets etc. The sizes were also all in order, which is helpful considering you can go right to your size and not mess around. Since organization is so important in these types of shops, I felt it was definitely not a stressful environment. You know when you're digging through piles of clothes with no clear direction. While I don't mind digging for a discount, if I'm just plain shopping, this kind of organization is key! read more

Have walked by Current Boutique quite a few times and wanted to stop in, finally today I had the chance to check it out. They are a really well curated boutique with mixes of new and used items. Everything is organized fairly well and doesn't feel picked over like some consignment shops can be if they are popular. The prices of their newer items were a little higher than I had hoped, I can find many of the newer items online for less, but that's part of the trade-off when you shop at a brick and mortar store vs online. The gently used designed items were priced decently, some items I saw on the rack were NWT and were a fraction of the retail price. I found a gem, a mod style Trina Turk dress, which fit... and I definitely purchased it. I plan on visiting Current Boutique more regularly to see if I can find anymore gems. *Wish they had more dressing rooms! **Every sale is final sale, so make sure you try things on before you buy them!!! read more

I've been wanting to visit a Current Boutique for a long time because I had a friend who worked at one of the locations and would talk about the great selection of clothing g they carried. About two weeks ago on a Saturday I was having brunch at one of the neighboring restaurants but my reservation got delayed so I decided to go shopping at Current while I waited. For the amount of clothes they have in the boutique it's very well organized and the selection is great for all price points though I think the markup on pieces are based off the brand and not the actual piece. For example: I saw a DVF slip dress which I thought was cute until I put it on and realized it was 100% see through meaning it was something meant to be used under another piece but because it was DVF it was $70. In the end though I did find some pieces that were great and I was content with. After the brunch my friends and I wanted to go walk around the area to some bars but since I hadn't driven to the city I didn't want to carry around a shopping bag. When I went back to Current to ask if they'd hold it there for three days so I could pick it up later they said flat out no because it was against their policy. When I asked about what their policy was they said they didn't understand my question and they didn't have an actual policy to show me. As a customer this is scary because though I don't think it was relevant in this situation, employees could discriminate against a customer and they could just flat out say something is their policy without it actually being the case. I think that upper management needs to create a policy that's available for customers to see when they go to the store that clearly states out what the store and its employees are allowed to do or not, also a return policy, and any additional information that could be relevant. read more

I consider this to be the best consignment shop in the area for several reasons: 1. They always have a wide array of designer clothes, shoes and bags. They have a much better selection than most other consignment stores 2. They are the easier shop to consign with--most consignment shops make it a big ordeal to bring in your items. With Current Boutique, you can even MAIL IN the items you want to consign. Also, when you go to any CB store, a clerk can check your consignment balance and let you know which items haven't sold yet. The only way their consignment experience could be better is if consignors could have a log in to check online themselves. But, calling in is fine. 3.I love that there are multiple locations. 4. Prices felt reasonable to me - about a third of retail, which makes sense given the location and the level of curation. The folks working there were lovely and very helpful, too. They only take brand name and if you find something wrong they will take more % off to cover dry cleaning it. They don't bother you and let you take your time looking and trying on! read more

It's about time there was a big enough consignment spot that is open in DC. There are a few scattered here and there, but this one is massive and if you can't find something there, then you may have a problem with fashion altogether. Lets not make that a habit shall we? Everyone working here is extremely helpful, I found a few items that I wanted to take home and several dresses that I tried on that were awesome and affordable. If you're trying to jazz up your closet, this is the place to go. The female selection outweighs the men's section, but I'm sure in time that will change since this is a new location for the establishment. My friend and I popped into Current Boutique and it wasn't long before I had an armful of dresses. The boutique has probably 20% new merchandise and 80% consignment. I'll admit that I'm not one for consignment so the front part of the store was where I did my shopping. Though I did notice tons of high-end brands throughout the rest of the store, including a gorgeous pair of Prada heels. I struck up a conversation with one of their employees, Peggy, who was sweet and helpful. The new dresses at the front ranged in price mostly from the forties to nineties. One thing I loved about the dresses was that they seemed cut for women versus teens. I often have a hard time in boutiques because the dresses are usually way too short for my tall frame. I didn't have that issue at Current. I liked a couple things I tried on but settled on just one fab frock. I did notice signs saying that all sales are final, which could be a con when purchasing something brand new. But since I had my friend's approval, I knew I wouldn't have any buyer's remorse. This was the most sucessful shopping I've done in years. I found 6 dresses here that look AMAZING on me for a grand total of $335. They were all consignment, and would have cost at least double that regular retail. The store is very nice, the staff helpful. They carry mid-level and high-level mass retail brands, like Anthropologie, BCBG, Coach, Theory, J Crew, Banana Republic, and some cute low-end, like NYC and Co. Crap, this place had such a good selection that I ended up with 3 dresses and 1 necklace. I only shopped in the new stuff, and it was reasonably priced (urban outfittersish, 45-80 for dresses) but way better selection. Everything in this store screamed my name and even my shopping companion referred to it as the "Sarah B." store. For my average/ body type, all these cuts were extremely flattering (most natural waist/drop waist) and I hope to come back here and blow another wad somewhere in the future. read more

Current Boutique has a mix of brand name consignment and new clothing at very reasonable prices, as well as some funky statement jewelry. The employees are very nice and friendly, and make you feel welcome. I can only give 3 stars for now - although I have been there muptiple times to browse, I haven't been able to buy anything. I am usually in too much of a hurry to search through the consignment stuff (my own fault, I always stop by on a whim), but while the new dresses in the front of the store are super cute and draw me in every time, the sizing appears to be off. The smalls are more like mediums in other brands, and I just don't have the patience to have things tailored. read more

Not bad... It's hard to judge a vintage shop on one visit alone, but that's all I have to help me write this review. I say it's hard because it depends on what the stock is on that particular trip. You might find a gem on one trip and think it's the best place in the world just because you have good timing and vice versa. This store is pretty decently sized so there's a big selection but that doesn't mean that it's good stuff. My friend found a Michael Kors bag that was really pretty but it was priced at over $150. We weren't sure about the original price but we both agreed you could find a similar, brand new bag for a cheaper price at TJ Maxx or something. And note that this wasn't a special, vintage, one-of-a-kind bag or anything. I think it's a fun store for window shopping and killing some time but it's not the greatest vintage store I've been to. read more

What a great shopping experience! I walked in and was immediately greeted by a friendly woman named Carrie (?). I told her why I came in and what I needed help with and she took me through the store, pulled all sorts of clothing for me. She was super laid back, but still very professional. Not a tad pushy -- which I totally appreciated! She and her colleague, Liz, helped me accessorize with great vintage-style necklaces and even gave me hair and makeup tips for the event I was going to that evening. Amazing customer service!! I walked out of there with a black, one-shoulder J Crew dress for $35 and two fabulous statement necklaces, both more expensive than the dress but it's jewelry -- could totally justify the purchases. Pricing is great. They have a large selection of consignment items and new clothing, too. They also take consignments -- no appointment necessary! You get 50% of the selling price! It's not as much about name brands as it is about quality. They do not sell crappy consignment items. Everything looked damn near close to brand new. It's a very well-organized shop, too. I'm a big fan of Current, especially this location. Items are priced fairly and the staff is really helpful. I popped in once to just window shop while I was talking to a friend on the phone (kind of rude, sorry sorry). I noticed a shoe that I liked and noted to my friend "I may have just found the perfect black shoe, maybe I should try these on!" Without asking, a sales person went to the back and brought me the other shoe. I didn't even ask, she just brought it out! The best part was that they fit well and only cost me $12! I'd say if you're planning to come to Current, plan to spend an hour or so combing the racks and trying things on. It's a great place to find designer items affordable for a young professional. One downside is that I've heard it can be a little difficult to consign things, but I haven't tried so can't comment on that. read more

Definitely one of the better consignment shops in the Washington DC area. It's clean, organized, and stocked with a variety of "higher-end" designers for all sizes. I wouldn't say it is a great bargain for clothes, but it's better than paying retail for a variety of name brands. Personally, I didn't find anything in the consignment area that special this time around , but the front of the store carries some of their regular retail items (not used) that I thought were really great. They have dresses on display, and they all cost around ~$80. Basically, I would come here *Free dum-dums in glass containers scattered around the store, and there are a few chairs for your boyfriend (no men selection) to rest on while waiting. ;) read more

Nothing moves in this place, if you are undecided about something, honestly wait cause it will be there for weeks! -Weird fellow shoppers. Some girls were talking loudly for 30 mins about some ugly shoes they had found in their size for $30. I would drive from PVD to DC just to frequent this shop. Southern women really know how to dress and then pass on their gems. Each piece I picked out had a date to indicate it had just been dropped off for consignment (a sure sign stuff turns over fast), was beautiful, and catch this - fit perfectly. The only problem is figuring out which pair of $200 shoes and how many of the hundred dollar dresses I will have to leave behind. On the sad face side of things, they don't have a system of markdowns by date - something I'm used to in New England. All in all, a great find! read more

A pretty good spot to shop for pre-owned clothing. I generally gravitate toward the $12-20 silk/blend tops, but my favorite find was from last winter: scored a great rabbit fur coat for $90! Admittedly, there's a lot of safe/boring J.Crew and Ann Taylor Loft cluttering the racks, and some of the items are oddly overpriced ($60 for a pre-owned LOFT sweater??). But if you dig around and have the patience to visit a few times, you're more likely to find some decent deals on more unique items. read more

This place has good designer clothes for decent prices. Some clothing items are quite expensive to be in a consignment shop, but I guess it comes with the territory. The shop is clean and has very active representatives with overall good customer service skills. The reason why I am giving this review 2 stars is because I felt a little uncomfortable with the amount of time the representatives on the floor were asking if they could "get a fitting room started" for me. I was likely in that store for about an hour and they asked me about 4 times if they could start a fitting room. I understand that this could be a sales tactic to encourage the customers to try on their clothes and continue shopping or to "free up an arm" for the customer. However, on the other hand, it felt a little forced and as though they insisted to get me room, so that I would be less likely to steal something. I don't know if this vibe was correct, but this is what it felt like due to the number of times that I was asked. I would recommend having your sales representatives ask a customer at the most, once if they need a fitting room. If a customer needs a fitting room, trust me, they will ask. As a customer, we don't want to carry a pile full or clothes on our arms, if we don't have to. Another suggestion would be to have the sales reps ask the customer once, when they see the customer with 4+ items of clothing. Allow the customer to continue browsing. Once their arms begin to look full, ask them how they are doing in their search and if they need anything. The customer will then tell you if they need something or not. At this point, you could casually throw in, "well, let me know if you need a dressing room. I'd be happy to get one for you." A final suggestion would be to offer customers in store shopping bags, that are maybe a bright color & logo, so they can be easily distinguished from customers' handbags and other items, for theft prevention purposes.
