My fiance and I decided to go with Shelter for my custom engagement ring. We worked with Magnolia who was wonderful from start to finish. During our first meeting, she went over the services they provided, the timelines and the available options. Following our meeting, she sent a detailed email describing what we talked about, providing the price points for each option discussed, and the plan moving forward. The service was amazing which made our choice for us. Throughout the process, Magnolia was extremely helpful. We decided to go with a sapphire and she answered all my questions and concerns when I was worried about my initial choice. The final result came out amazing. My ring is so beautiful and was better than i even expected! I am so in love with my ring. I definitely recommend Shelter if you are looking for a custom engagement ring or jewelry. The whole process took about 13 weeks from start to finish and they were very reasonably price. They also provide a 1 year defect and workmanship warranty, as well as one complimentary resize. Thank you Magnolia and Shelter for my wonderful engagement ring! read more

Phew! The intensity of being able to book an endless bracelet appointment is a thriller but I'm so happy I was finally able to get one. Booked for a Saturday morning and parking is atrocious, as I have never been to this area, but there is a parking garage 2/3 streets over that has like a free courtesy 30 minute parking a believe. I rushed over and the shop is beautiful. The appointment itself took less than 5 minutes it felt like. About a week after my appointment my bracelet was too much of an irritation under my Apple Watch so I left a message asking for an appointment to switch it to my other wrist. It took about 4-5 days for a response but we were able to set it up and she switched it free of charge; a literal 3 minute appointment. Love love love my forever jewelry piece! read more

Shelter - Jewelry Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

I'm such a fan of Shelter. I've had a custom piece designed, a family heirloom redesigned, and bought from the inventory. I appreciate the modern and classic designs, featuring in-house designers and many other interesting jewelers. I'm surprised at other commenters talking about rude staff, since that hasn't been my experience at the shop, and owner Mallory herself has been professional and friendly to deal with. I recommend Shelter to my friends all the time. read more

I am planning a sales mission in DC. My colleague, who assists with planning our events, reached out to Shelter on my behalf. Unfortunately, the experience was less than pleasant. In fact, the last exchange was downright rude. The person hung up on my colleague twice. In one exchange, the person said they were not interested without hearing about our inquiry. We were looking to host 20 to 30 clients at Shelter - allowing them to experience Shelter and walk away with permanent jewelry paid for buy us. I concur with other reviews that the staff doesn't care about the business or its potential customers. My counterparts, competition are always looking for unique and fun client events. I will not recommend Shelter. It was difficult to get a response. When we did, it was rude. No recommendation from me. read more

My fiance and I designed my engagement ring together because neither of us knew what I wanted lol. I did know that I would love a ring from Mallory Shelter because I love her style and saw her grow her business from selling at markets to her own store front, which is so cool. I don't live in DC anymore so we did a zoom call with her, she was really helpful and we narrowed it down to 2 ring styles. They then mailed us 2 wax ring renderings so I could pick out which one I wanted. My fiance took over from there and worked with Magnolia on finalizing the details. The turnaround time was exactly what they projected and shipping was quick. I'm completely obsessed with my gorgeous ring! It's even more beautiful than I could have imagined :) Pic from the night we got engaged! I'm also wearing the hammered bracelet I bought from Mallory at a pop up market back in 2017! Timeless pieces, so happy we went to her read more

The staff at the store was very friendly and super helpful! I had read prior reviews and was leery of going but this store had what we wanted so we decided to chance it. Our family got the endless bracelets and the lovely girl who did them was very patient, made suggestions and could not have been more professional. The jewelry on display was GORGEOUS and we ended up buying a couple of pieces. At one point we had 3 different sales people trying to answer our questions and find pieces. It was an amazing experience and we would not hesitate to go back there in the future. read more

Shelter - Showing off our forever bracelets from Shelter! - Jewelry Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

Shelter is an absolutely incredible jewelry store with a rockstar team. Magnolia and her colleagues were wonderful to partner with on designing an engagement ring and they made my dream vision into reality. Their communication was 10/10 all the time, they were beyond thorough, and they readily answered any questions I had and were excellent at guiding me through this process. On top of all that - the ring was finished early! The team here is IMMENSELY talented and they are brilliant at what they do. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to work with them on designing a piece that my partner and I will cherish for years to come. They are a fantastic and slightly avant-garde addition to a DC jewelry marketplace that runs very stuffy and old school. Can't wait to shop in their store more often! read more

I wrote a review and deleted it because I felt bad - small business in dc and all. BUT I think the owner should know that some of the staff are just not interested in helping customers. Please train your staff on how to speak to customers that are in your store ready to drops thousands on an engagement ring. I would consider hiring new staff or training them.. read more

Hospitality. If it's not there... it makes me not want to explore the inventory. Going out of your way to greet your customer(s) is valuable. These women just looked at me and my partner and purposely paid no attention but they didn't do it to the previous customers leaving. I notice everything. I'll just leave it there. I didn't want to buy a thing. We rolled out! read more

The people who work here are just straight up rude. I asked a simple question today and the owner spoke to me like I was an annoyance. My mother and I went in there with the intention of spending real money, but we left feeling like we had been slapped. We spent the rest of the day wondering why they had been so mean to us when we were clearly there to shop. read more

I've had the best experiences at Shelter! My fiancée and I came here to look for engagement rings and the staff were very helpful, we ended up buying one that day. I've since been back to purchase gifts and have always had a great experience. read more

Such a cute place, and the staff are very lovely, but I would avoid the endless bracelets. After waiting a while to secure an appointment, I finally got one welded on, and it looked beautiful. However, not even two weeks later, the chain stretched almost an inch, hanging very loosely on my wrist. The staff were kind, but I had to make an additional appointment (free of charge) to get it fixed. The welder said the chain was so stretched because of a hard tug or it getting caught on something, but in the not even two weeks of having the bracelet, I can't recall an event where either of those happened. She said my chain was now "weak" and "hopefully it would last this time". Needless to say, I am disappointed. I thought they would attach a new chain since they don't do refunds, but nope. I guess I will see how long it lasts, but I doubt more than a few weeks. read more

Living in the area and a frequent shopper at Union Market, I was excited when I decided to shop for an engagement ring especially when I knew there was a beautiful shop in the neighborhood. My first visit I was beyond shocked with the rudeness of the staff who didn't give me the time of day. I decided to give it another try and wow, once again disappointed. I could not believe their dismissive attitude and unfriendliness. I was clearly ready to make a serious purchase, maybe I didn't meet their expectations of who should be shopping there. I brought my money to another local DC jeweler who went beyond my expectations. Little did I know my then fiancé went to shelter to look for an engagement ring as well, and she was met with the same horrible treatment. If you value kindness and good customer service, go somewhere else. read more

This store is beautifully curated and has a number of lovely items. However, staff is incredibly rude and dismissive. I've purchased items from Shelter in the past and the experience has been fine. Not great but fine. However, the last time I was in, I tried on a pair of earrings and the person who worked in the shop treated me with such disdain and disinterest my friend asked (privately) what I had done. Definitely a mean girl vibe. I felt uncomfortable and decided to purchase the earrings (a pair of Ariel Gordon small hoops) directly from the Ariel Gordon site. read more

Mallory helped design and craft my engagement ring, and we couldn't be more pleased. She was very responsive on email, and was transparent about the process, the cost (which was very reasonable, all things considered!) and the timeline. She made multiple digital renderings to make sure everything was perfect, and then 3D printed a mockup to make sure it fit and looked okay before making the final ring in gold and adding the stones. She sourced some absolutely beautiful stones (including an amazing lab-made alexandrite) and also worked in an heirloom family jewel that we provided. The final result is absolutely gorgeous and completely unique; I can't stop looking at it. read more

Shelter - Beautiful ring created by Mallory - Jewelry Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

My husband and I decided to design my engagement ring together, and Mallory was fantastic to work with. She laid out the whole process in our first meeting, was respectful of our budget, and communicative at every step. I loved how Shelter was willing to work with unique stone cuts (I really wanted a rose cut, which many designers don't worn with!), and they sourced several for us to view in-person and make our decision. After a great experience with my engagement ring, we decided to get our wedding bands made by Shelter, too (Magnolia was great!). Can't recommend them enough! read more

The most wonderful small biz. Thoughtfully curated selection of clothing, jewelry and more. I love that the designers they carry are small businesses themselves. Great spot to pick out a gift for yourself or someone special. Medium range price points which align with the high quality of their items. So many of my favorite pieces are from here - from an affordable perfect solid color wool scarf, to a special necklace I was gifted and wear daily. A must see if you're in the neighborhood. If you're not, highly recommend their online shop! read more

Cute dainty waaay overpriced jewels. workers are stuck up and stare at you funny when they assume you aren't buying anything. could do so much better if prices are more reasonable and if Mallory hires an entire new staff. lol good luck read more

I can't say enough amazing things about Shelter. I found a beautiful necklace at their shop that I fell in love with. I purchased the necklace in April and unfortunately it was stolen while on vacation a few months later. I reached out to the shop to see if I could repurchase it because I had such an attachment. They kindly went out of their way to reach out to the artist to see if they could get me another one as they didn't have another in stock. They stayed in touch throughout the process and secured a new necklace for me. I am blown away by their kindness. They are a top notch jeweler with beautiful unique pieces, but they also care about their clientele. Please support this business, it's so rare to find people who care about the quality of their offering as much as the experience of their clientele. Thank you Shelter for such an amazing experience. I am forever grateful! read more

Shelter is an incredible, well-curated shop! Mallory and her staff go above and beyond to provide a lovely experience for all who enter. We worked with Mallory to design our engagement and wedding rings. The engagement ring was a custom piece using a stone from a family heirloom, and my wedding ring was a custom design, where Shelter sourced the stones. Mallory and her team were great to work with, very responsive and informative about why someone might make certain metal or design choices (cost, aesthetic, wear, etc.). I LOVE the rings, which are both classic and unique. My now husband and I also really enjoyed getting to do it together. The whole process was just fun! I highly recommend Mallory and the Shelter team for an awesome custom jewelry experience. read more

Could not have had a better experience working with Mallory on a beautiful black diamond & rose gold ring for my wife. Mallory and her team are always super responsive and easy to work with, including everything from designs to pricing to everything in between. My husband and I chose this shop to design my engagement ring after my sister had a great experience designing her custom piece. I decided to go with a less common cut and stone (pear shaped sapphire) and our designer Magnolia did a fantastic job helping us source the perfect gem within our budget. The team was respectful, answered all communications quickly, and overall great to work with. I would recommend to anyone! read more

I have shopped at Shelter (both in person and online) a few times over the years and have always really enjoyed the experience. The carefully selected items/brands are thoughtful, sweet, and tasteful. So many pretty things here. There are more expensive items (rightfully so) and plenty of options for those shopping on a budget. It's tough to run a small business and I've always thought they do it beautifully! read more

This is my first yelp review as I've never felt compelled to write before, however i can't get over my negative experience at this shop. I was going to purchase some jewelry however the manager was so unfriendly I had to leave. I'm usually sympathetic bc you never know what the person is going through, and i love supporting small businesses, however this was just beyond. Sadly, Will never go back. read more

I've been to Shelter twice, and I have wanted so badly to like this store as it is well curated and unique. However, the customer service in this shop is so appalling that I refuse to purchase anything here. On both occasions, staff have made no effort to be welcoming or offer to assist. On my first visit, I attempted to try on a ring and was scolded that displays were "NOT SELF ASSIST!!!," which was interesting because no one on staff was willing to speak to ask if I needed help or was interested in viewing items... It's unfortunate that such a beautiful shop is filled with people who are so hateful. read more

My fiancée and I purchased a custom engagement ring and wedding bands from SHELTER and couldn't have asked for a better experience. Neither of us wear much jewelry, so we had a lot of questions and needed a lot of guidance. The SHELTER team struck the perfect balance of listening to and respecting our preferences while also steering us in the right direction. We are absolutely thrilled with the finished products. Thank you so much, Magnolia and Mallory! read more

I went to Shelter because I wanted to reset my mom's engagement ring from almost 40 years ago. I met with Mallory and told her what I was looking for and the process was seamless. She took our conversation and from there was able to provide images and then a 3D print of what the ring would look like to ensure I was still happy with the design and setting. We were able to check in throughout the process and she was really flexible with any ideas or thoughts I had. She was also able to get the ring done in a very timely fashion. I highly recommend Mallory for any custom design work and the shop has really nice jewelry. read more

Mallory made my beautiful engagement ring a couple years ago and I continue to love it and support this shop. So impressed by this store!!!! Bought my FAVORITE new navy blue sweater earlier this month and happened to find out that store employees are offered training in ASL (American Sign Language). My friend's two year old son is deaf so that really caught my attention. I am SO happy to know that there are establishments that go above and beyond just making a sale. Not only will I frequent this store because of their great merchandise, but I will shop there because of their social consciousness. read more
