Tip Extortion Been…read moregoing there occasionally for 5 years. Service was hit and miss. Some staff friendly, some merely aloof, some seemingly hostile. Never could figure it out. Gave them the benefit of the doubt. I always support independent shops when possible. Friends don't let friends go to Starbucks... A few days ago it became clear. I ordered a bagel and requested it be toasted enough not to be raw inside. About half the time that's what I got. I paid and saw they wanted a tip upfront. I feel asking for a tip before earning it is unethical. So I selected no tip. I would gladly leave a dollar after. One of the staff, let's call him "Chris", toasted my bagel and delivered it to me burnt. No overdone. Burnt. As in mostly black. I said it was burnt. He replied that I requested it "double toasted". I looked at him like he was speaking in Swahili. I explained that I merely wanted it toasted and not raw inside. He insisted that I ordered it that way. He did not take my order. I said she wrote it but I did not say it. He insisted that I, the customer, was somehow so stupid as to not know how to order a bagel. I said "would you eat this"? Amazingly, he said with a straight face "yes". I replied that he could eat it but I want what I ordered. The baged was an insult. A childish lame attempt at revenge or punisihment. At this point "Chris" leaned over and told me I should be nice. Nice? Nice! I was flabbergasted. I was being scolded by kid a third my age. I was stunned. Was this a joke? Yes, but he was serious. It was an absolutely stunning display of passive-aggressive behavior. Delivered with a condescending smirk and self-righteousness. I replied that I am not nice and so what. He then insisted that I be nice. I said I am from the Midwest and we tend to be direct. It's not rude. It's the way we communicate. Honestly without hedging. This sailed right over his head unacknowledged, Then the truth. You didn't leave a tip he said. How did he know I didn't tip on the little checkout screen? I tried to explain my view on tipping that it needs to be earned. "Chris" was adamant that they expect tips as they are not paid much and work "hard". I reiterated my view and called tipping up front unearned and possibly undeserved as like Socialism. "Chris" did not like that and said that "people of my generation (Boomers are Bad!) don't get it." He further lectured me on how underpaid they were and that the "need" and thus "deserve" tips regardless of what service they offer. He then declared that a dollar tip was entirely insufficient. I replied that $1 on a $4 bagel was a 25% tip. He repeated that it was too little regardless. I said then how much is fair. He did not answer. My guess is that he knew as much about the mathematics of percentages as he knows about Swahili dialects. I offered that if they were to ask for tips after, the honorable way, they would earn more. People are motivated above all by fairness and would hedge on tips not knowing if they would be earned. "Chris" gave me the obligatory hourly-wage employee response that "that's the way it is"... The self-declared creatives have the ingenuity of cows munching grass. Then a kid decided to be a hero and intervened saying "WE don't have a problem with the tipping". In a stunning display of sociotropic behavior, he elected himself to defend the shop and represent all other patrons. I ran out of patience and told him to STFU. At this point the heroine server, who decided I like burnt bagels, told me to leave. So I did leave. I regret every penny I spent there to support their shop. So now I know why even as I liked the layout of the place, and all their countless little books promoting a myriad of pretentious woke socialist utopia topics, I never felt comfortable there. The all-inclusive did not like me invading their "Safe Space". Instead of just telling me "hey, this is our space not yours Boomer Boy" they instead were a case study in passive aggressiveness. A coward's way to feel all smug and self-righteous. Since they present themselves as fans of "literature" here is a literary quote (Kurt Vonnegut Jr. in Slaughterhouse Five... said to the character Billy Pilgrim in a hospital upon his return from being a prisoner of war in Dresden, Germany... "I can carve a better man out of a banana" So I see that they have high ratings from their intended audience and I am a mere interloper. My little One star rating will not be noticed. I will end this saying "Be Nice"... "Stay Safe".... be good little normies.... tell your friends to go to Starbucks. p.s. The Wolverine is the state animal of Michigan, where I am from. It is fearless and righteous. No other animal takes it on. You don't deserve the name. May I suggest the "Weasel Farm Safe Place"...

As an every day black coffee drinker, I have to say, they were having a really bad coffee day. After a few sips of my coffee, I went back to counter and put a bunch of half and half into my mug of coffee. The barista was looking at me with an expression that said, "You should have ordered an espresso drink". They are forgiven for one bad coffee day.

The shop itself is cool and the drinks are good but the woman-owner lacks professionalism. It is a shame I had to give up my favorite (daily) latte. This woman struts around, nearly exposed and cursing intensely. Please, Miss, button up your shirt. Watch what you say. Children and the elderly frequent the place, if you haven't noticed. The vulgarity has offended me numerous times, as has the peep show...which seems to be deliberate. I could understand if it was a one-time occurrence, but it's every time I go in there. It's sad to lose a customer this way, as well as others in my circle who are also unhappy with the performance. I feel like it had to be said. read more

Everywhere I go I search for the best coffee shop in town. For me this dream destination has to have great drink, nice tables, coffee shop music, wifi, proves to be a good place to be productive, and a friendly environment. When I arrived at Cuppy's in Foco I knew I had found my place. With a great tea selection, lattes, smoothies, and baked goods there is always something for me no matter what time of the day. From the owner to the manager and all the baristas I have never felt so welcomed at a coffee shop. Cuppy's has become a second home to me thanks to everyone there. Having worked in customer service for over 8 years, I am hyper-aware of the service I receive at other establishments. Cuppy's Coffee is extraordinary. At Cuppy's you will find wonderfully rich coffee, tasty and unique goodies, and genuine, happy service. The owner, as well as the baristas, are warm, welcoming, and professional. If I were to start my own business, I would definitely strive to emulate Cuppy's and the owner's management style. She is, to put it simply, a rock star. Cuppy's is awesome!! read more

Speaking firsthand when I say this establishment is extremely racist. Do not come here unless you want to be kicked out, be called racist names, and have the cops called on you for not being white. Do not support this "cafe". Plus the coffee and food sucks. read more

Nice atmosphere and usually busy, but quiet. With free wi-fi there are lots of student studying and such. Coffee is excellent. Great specials throughout the week. The baristas are friendly, but don't go the extra mile, so I give it 4 stars. read more

Sometimes they offer the choice of two different roasts for their espresso drinks, which I've never seen before anywhere else, ever. Stop reading here if that's all you need to know. Today. I order a Smokey Mocha (they also have a regular Mocha on the menu). Side note. It's really hard to screw up a mocha. At its most basic it's hot chocolate with shots of espresso. Even with bad or mediocre espresso shots there's usually enough milk and chocolate to cover it up. On the flipside, it's really hard to make a mocha that stands out from the crowd. (Spoiler-Dark Heart surpasses all that mocha mediocrity). Rewind. The first time I went to Dark Heart a couple years ago, a menu item caught my attention. The Smokey Mocha. My friend and I asked what it was. The barista at the register smiled and gave us her sales pitch. Something she'd obviously done many times and still didn't seem to mind doing. My friend and I were both sold as we each ordered one. After I was done with my Smokey Mocha, I wanted to order another. Unfortunately, we were coffee cafe hopping and had four more stops. When I got home, I started gushing about my Smokey Mocha to the SO and anyone else who would listen. Fast forward back to today. I order the 8-ounce Smokey Mocha for here. My drink has a nice heart design with a generous amount of black lava sea salt sprinkled on top. I smell notes of cocoa, but I can't tell if it's from the espresso (Relentless blend) or the cocoa powder. With every sip I take, I taste warm sweet (from cane sugar and maple syrup) mocha that ends with a touch of salt. The smoked paprika is an afterthought. I savor my drink, but I reach the bottom of my mug much too quickly. I swirl the mug to get the last dregs of salt and cocoa powder (single origin cocoa powder from the Philippines according to the barista). As I drive away, I can taste the salt on my llips, and I still feel the astringency of the cocoa powder in my mouth. This is no ordinary mocha drink. The Dark Heart Smokey Mocha has no equal.
