The Dentist did not even take time to introduce herself to me, and was very blunt and uncaring with treatment plan. I understand the practice is busy, but you should still take the time to make people feel comfortable, especially when it comes to dealing with their children. After one visit there, I immediately switched to another practice and could not be happier.

It seems reviews have gone down hill as time as gone by. Maybe this should have been a red flag…read more My child was seen at this office for 1.5 years, give or take. Our last appointment, things really took a turn. The staff seemed frazzled and I heard tid bits of conversation that seemed there was tension. The older dental hygienist at the McLaughlin location, was seeing my child. This is the second time she has worked with my child. I was not a fan the first time as her demeanor did not seem kid friendly (tone, easily frustrated, off comments to my child.) I chalked that one up to a bad day. The latest appointment, had me frustrated. She spoke to my child with a very frustrated tone. He asked her to not have the gloves near his lips but instead of talking through the situation, she told him, well they are there and you are lucky your mom helps you with your teeth. Mind you, my child is not even 5 yet. These comments continued along with increased frustrated breathing and eventually rolling her eyes at my child. She then said, yeah, we are not doing x-rays. He cannot even handle a cleaning. I then stepped in to floss his teeth as he gave me a look as the older hygienist became more frustrated. She then asked him about a toothbrush and he stated which one and she did not listen to his words and grabbed a random one and handed it to him. She then went to check her schedule and words were communicated between her and another hygienist. She left and then came back to tell me the dentist was running behind and she had to move on. I asked how long and she shrugged and said I don't know. At this point , we were waiting for 15 minutes for the dentist to check his teeth after cleaning. I told her I can wait 10 minutes and then I will need to go. She relayed the information to the dentist and then came back to tell me she let the dentist know and had to move on. 10 mins passed and I had to get my kid lunch and off to school..at this point we, were there for an hour for a cleaning for a 5 year old. I told a younger hygienist beside us that I am not too sure who I need to tell but we need to go. I took my child out of the chair and left. A few days later, I received a letter in the mail that the dentist was withdrawing professional care for my child. I spoke to the Practice Manager. Our conversation was very unprofessional and unproductive. She told me I have no clue what I am talking about , laughed when I was discussing my concerns and overall had a poor understanding from a client matter. She also stated to me that I have no clue what is happening in their office , which I agree, but also told me I do not know how the medical field works and I need to change my perception. Unfortunately, this did turn into a who can talk louder as she interrupted me constantly and did not care what I had to say. Her immature demeanor on the phone when trying to discuss my concerns about the staff being overbooked and my child waiting in a chair for 1 hour was horrible. I never write reviews but I am sick and tired of being pushed around in the medical field, especially when it comes to Peds. So please take caution when thinking of Pediatric Dentistry South-McLaughlin Road location for your needs. Sincerely, One mama sick and tired of being pushed around or waitlisted.r

I've been coming to the small Gurtner Dental offices for dental care all of my life, so I've had…read moreboth of the Gurtners - Maggie and Stephen - as my dentist at different points (one works primarily with kids, the other adults). They're definitely a great pair; I can only assume that I don't outright hate or fear going to the dentist as much as the average American because I've had relatively good experiences with these two. I won't even pretend that I've always been the best at taking care of my teeth (boy, was I a challenge to deal with when I had braces and did absolutely nothing in the ways of caring of my teeth!), but they don't hold it against me (openly anyway). These days though my visits are actually usually fast and pretty painless, with the occasional additional matter that requires a little more than a basic check-up. Whenever I come in the staff is always interested in hearing about new developments in my life, which is sweet of them. And the office, which isn't the biggest place in the world never seems too packed or noisy, which is a plus in my book considering that I can be a little stressed waiting for my appointment to start as I hope there isn't a new problem with my teeth. I definitely think this is a great little business run by a great pair of people, and I totally recommend this office to anyone in the area who's looking for a new dentist.

While I am compelled to disclose that this review is mainly based on the office staff, and not, in…read morefact the dentist himself (we'll get there), I should think that a pediatric dentist should be able to find staff that, oh I don't know, actually like/know how to deal with kids! Let's start at the beginning. I researched forever trying to decide where to take my 4 year old for a cleaning/check-up. I'd already had his teeth examined and cleaned at my regular dentist, but I thought he'd be more comfortable in an office geared towards children. What a laugh! Before our appointment, I submitted our new patient paperwork as suggested online (and I was pretty impressed that that was an option). When we arrived, however, the front desk person received us icily without a proper greeting and demanded to know where our paperwork was. When I told her I'd submitted online, she basically called me a liar, and then ate crow a bit later when she realized that my paperwork had come through AFTER she'd done her early morning (and only) check of the day. Ps. Our appointment was at 1pm. In an effort to make my little man's experience as positive as possible, I ignored her shitty attitude, and we sat down and settled into a completely empty waiting room to... wait. Immediately, my son asked where all the toys were. (Even my midwife's office has tons of toys around for kids who accompany mamas to visits!) There was literally nothing to entertain children while they waited in the entire office, save for a sad little chalkboard on one wall. There were not even even any kids' magazines or books! The decor was super generic and not fun (our doctor's office, for example, is clearly decorated with children in mind, which seems appropriate, no?), and I was glad we had brought things to entertain him. Eventually, while I breastfed his baby brother (which also did not seem to go over well with the front desk), he started playing tic-tac-toe with his dad on the board. When a nurse came out to get him--surprise!--he didn't immediately put down the chalk and follow her (hello--he's 4), at which point she was so short and nasty with him, I considered walking out then and there. My husband went back with him for the visit at that point since the babe had fallen asleep in my arms. Once back there, according to Husband, Nurse Ratched continued her short-tempered treatment of our little one, admonished him for shouting several times (he was actually just excited!), and repeatedly told him to lower his voice. I actually heard HER raise her voice at HIM in the waiting room! She also spoke to him in an extremely condescending manner, as if he were a baby, which neither he nor we appreciated. Although the dentist himself seemed to be pretty sweet, knowledgeable, and was great with our son, unfortunately, most of a child's interaction (and ours) takes place with the ancillary staff, and thus, this is not the office for us. We will not return, and we will recommend against it to friends and family. Poor Dr. Ruffalo should find some staff who mirror his professionalism and kindness. The people he has now are sadly, not it.
