My husband and I purchased a deal for a dozen delivered cupcakes from Living Social. A week before the voucher expiration (I admit, I could have used it sooner), the company has posted a banner on its webpage stating that it is full for deliveries between now and the voucher expiration. They permitted you to pick up cupcakes during their business hours, which are very limited, so I took my lunch break to go pick up cupcakes. I called first and was reassured that there would be a lot of flavor varieties available for pickup. When I got there, the display case was empty and a man tried to help me, but could only find a few flavors in the refrigerator, which I would expect were probably yesterday's leftover cupcakes. He said the woman was not yet back from deliveries, but would have more flavors when she returned, although he wasn't sure how long it would be. I didn't have time to wait, so I had to leave and return to work. I called the number on the voucher, as directed by the man who assisted me at the facility, and they were unwilling to extend the voucher validity period so I could have the delivery that the voucher is valid for. I don't feel like I should have to make time to go back again, but they were very unsympathetic and refused to work with me. Definitely poor customer service.
Since my husband had bought two vouchers, and gifted one to me, we did use one of them successfully (made time to preorder and pick up the cupcakes in the warehouse district of Rockville). The cupcakes were ok, but given that at $3 a piece they are MORE EXPENSIVE than Georgetown cupcakes, less tasty, and require so much preplanning and coordination, I would give it two thumbs down.
The cupcakes are standard in size and had relatively moist cakes, but the frostings generally lacked character and flavor. I also noticed, on my second visit, that behind the curtain of the catering area, there were stacks of tubs of frosting from Sam's Club. I am not sure if the bakery uses them or if they are for the related catering service, but just a heads up if you are looking for a fresh ingredient or from-scratch place, this may not be the choice for you.
Also, a second on the mini-cupcake comments. I saw them...they are super-tiny. I got a coupon for a free package because I picked up an order, but the "free" coupon required the purchase of $9 worth of cupcakes on my next visit during the same month to get the free ones, so I passed. I would never pay full price for these! read more
