So I was referred to Vern to discuss the possibility of taking a medication for depression. First,…read morehe was 25 minutes late and didn't really offer an apology. What really bothered me was his attitude about my weight. I was there to talk about my mood and his comments only made me feel worse. He literally told me I would have a hard time dating and finding love because men won't want me due to my weight. That input only makes me feel bad. It does not motivate me to lose weight. Which... I have been working on. Said right there in my chart that I lost 20 lbs recently. His comment was hurtful and not even necessary. He also told me he assumed I had sleep apnea because he thought he heard me wheeze. He didn't listen to my lungs with a stethoscope or anything. He basically just insinuated that I was so fat and unhealthy that I was audibly breathing poorly from across the room. Please note my actual medical doctor who sees me for my medical stuff has never given me any of this feedback. I am totally healthy. I've never been told that I've wheezed by anyone who listened to me with a stethoscope or anyone else ever. He was literally 4 feet away from me. He also started trying to pick out antidepressants for me before I even had the opportunity to tell him what I had tried in the past. I won't be going back. I would not recommend this provider for anyone who is even slightly overweight. His fat phobia prevents him from giving good care. Update 2018: This remains the single worst health related experience I've ever had. I cringe every time I drive past the building. I'm sad to see he is still on the staff there. I cant think of a worse time for an older white male bully a younger woman about her size than when she is reaching out for mental health support. A detail I didn't add when I wrote this review is that my therapist had left him a long voicemail about a week before the appointment and he hadn't listened to any of it. He literally knew nothing about me when he sat across from me and trashed my body my life and my health and then started making recommendations. It really traumatized me. Years later I could cry thinking about how this man treated me.

My experience is with the coordinator, Marla, and unfortunately not with Dr. Orenstein…read more I called to inquire about making an appointment for myself, a new patient, and was met with complete unprofessionalism from Marla. She stated that they "were not going in that direction" of taking on new patients... odd way of saying "no" but that's fine. I then asked if they have any referrals to offer she laughed and said they didn't do that... then went on to explain that I would have to meet with the doctor to get a referral. It's not odd for a doctor to refer other professionals in their field; I've received referrals from other doctors before. Such a terrible experience for anyone suffering from anxiety or any other mental illness. Marla should consider another profession if she can't show consideration for the type of clientele that would call a psychiatrist's office.

Dr. Orenstein has been my doctor for the better part of a year and has been extremely helpful with…read moremy anxiety issues as well as my ADHD. After my first meeting I was still undecided and continued looking for doctors but made another appointment anyways and during that second meeting the basis of an extremely dynamic and trusting relationship formed. Dr. Orenstein primarily practices psychopharmacotherapy which means that he treats psychological disorders with medication in conjunction with talk therapy; however, he has admitted that this approach does not work for everyone/every condition and also offers alternative suggestions. The extent of his knowledge about psychopharmacology is extreme and he ensures that his patients are well aware of possible side effects and follows the guidelines of informed consent. One such example of an alternative therapy was suggesting exposure therapy for my driving anxiety. He suggested I try going on long driving sessions and document any changes in my mental state as time progressed. Within 2 months of following this advice (I was limited to driving on the weekends) I was able to overcome the majority of my driving anxiety and actually procure a driver's license. Additionally Dr. Orenstein follows the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Guidelines for Ethics and Practice, erring on the side of caution. The office does this--in part--through their office policy that does not allow patients to be seen that are/have been romantically involved with a current patient or family members of current patients unless they are seeking therapy jointly (in the same session). Marla handles his scheduling and the administrative duties of the practice and does a wonderful job of accommodating busy schedules. If you have a restrictive schedule they will do their best to work around your availability and will even go as far as asking more flexible patients if they would consider moving their appointment (I have offered to change my appointment on several occasions). Overall, Dr. Orenstein is an extremely competent and effective psychiatrist who is very patient oriented.

If you would like a Doctor who is willing to sit down and listen to everything you have to say,…read morethen Dr. Bart Muller is a great choice. He is very compassionate and understanding about the serious issues I have had going on in my life! He has got me going down the right road for once in my life!

Dr. Muller is very committed to helping his patients, long term or not. He was supposed retire from practice at PacMed about ten years ago, but decided to return to practicing, in a private office with another doctor, after receiving many patients' requests not to leave them. He will sometimes see patients after normal office hours;or will return calls himself, even after gaps in hearing from me, and tolerates my issues with lateness. He once walked from his office several blocks away to Harborview, where some young resident was trying to label me "delusional" without good cause. Dr. Muller told them that he had never known me to be so, during almost fifteen years of seeing me. At that time, he also called family members, (as well as another psychiatrist who works for the state), to find out what was going on. He has very calm, respectful and understanding manner, talking you like a friend or family member--with none of the pat, leading phrases that therapists often use such as, 'So how did that make you feel?", etc. I
