Cumin is the best Indian restaurant in Western Michigan (We are from St Joseph, MI). After eating their elaborate Buffet and ala carte, I felt like I was in India eating at my in-law's home. Utterly vile. Ordered the shrimp masala. What I received was a pile of red pudding with some overcooked frozen shrimp in it. It tasted like stale water. Sixteen dollars for this crap too, plus packaging and delivery charge. This place can't go out of business fast enough. There is NO Indian food in Kalamazoo. I enjoy the food here and am a regular customer, at least I was until today. It's Thanksgiving and since limited places are open while at the grocery store today I called to check their holiday hours. I was told they would be open regular hours so I bought a banana cream pie and canceled my other purchases and decided indian would be an awesome Thanksgiving feast. I could not get through on the phone which is not that uncommon for this place so I drove there to make my order in person and to my surprise they were closed. All the grocery stores where now closed and most fast food was also closed. I stopped by a Walgreens and grabbed some hamburger and hot dog buns because that is all I could pretty much do at this point. Im guessing they were slow so shut down. Inconsistent hours is a huge mistake for businesses and you really f**ked me by closing early when a few hours earlier you said you would be open until 9. I called several times and got a busy signal 4 times so others where trying to order as well. I edited my review because I felt remorse for the one star review. You do have good food just be open when you say you are going to be open and answer your phone ( I've been dinning in and watched your staff not pick up call after call). read more

If my review can help the restaurant to improve the quality and customer service , I would like to write an essay on this. We drove all the way from Battle Creek hoping that we get a decent food. By looking at 4 rating, that is what will come in any ones mind. We have ordered bulk food to pick up and we were utterly disappointed with quality and treatment of the Mgt. We can't even name one single dish that is moderately OK. Every thing is paltry. We didn't know that in Kalamazoo for butter chicken , they call it as Mithi Chicken. Because, we one of the dish was mithi chicken and they gave butter chicken and written Mithi Chicken on the lid. Success of any restaurant is how consistent are you with quality and customer service. If you ignore this and look for short term gains, I wouldn't think this will help any better. read more

I really don't have anything to compare the vegetable biryani to since I have only had some homemade biryani in the past from a student whose mom had made it. I thought the biryani was delicious. It had a lot of spices but was not spicy. I live in Chicago (we had two takeout orders just before closing) so I will have to try to find this one somewhere here. I had my first buffet lunch at Cumin Indian Cuisine today, but it will not be my last! It is by far the best Indian restaurant in the Kalamazoo area. There were plenty of vegetarian choices, and they were all delicious. The Naan and Papadam were excellent. I also loved the Mango ice cream! The Chai tea with milk was soothing on this cold, snowy day. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the restaurant is casual and comfortable to be in. It is a good value for the price. Having spent time in Punjab, India as well as eating Langar in Gurudwara, I can honestly say that this food did not disappoint for authenticity. The family who owns the restaurant is charming and welcomes you as part of their own family. They cook the food for you as though you were a guest in their home. What a disappointing first experience. I was excited about the option for another Indian restaurant in Kalamazoo. The Shahi Paneer was thin and similar to tomato soup with a few chunks of paneer. The Vegetable Korma was whitish-grey and unappetizing and the only spice that I could taste was a little cinnamon, otherwise it was just odd. In addition, the Korma seemed to be made with bagged frozen vegetables (carrots, lima beans, green beans). Overall, it was unpleasant and strange. The restaurant was messy (napkins stuffed underneath the table legs) and the decor was tacky (the walls are sloppily painted) and I noticed that the sign out front is misspelled. My boyfriend and I had eaten at the lunch buffet at Cumin and liked that it was cheaper than Saffron so we decided to try out their regular dinner menu. We started with the vegetarian samosas, which contained potato, onion, and peas as usual. They were hot and crispy, pretty good. They came with 2 runny sauces, one of a yogurt and dill persuasion, the other which was sweet. I used neither. For our entrees, I ordered a dish containing mixed vegetables and rice that I can't remember the name of. He ordered a lamb dish. I easily identified my dish as frozen mixed vegetables reheated with a mediocre sauce and rice. You know the ones, the corn, carrot bits, cut green beans, and the occasional lima bean frozen blend? He thought his lamb was okay but the dish was missing vegetables as it only contained lamb pieces in a sauce with rice. Some onions or tomatoes would easily have added some depth to the dish. In addition, we ordered a side of onion-topped nan. That was good, but at the end of the day I just was not satisfied with a good appetizer and tasty nan since the entree was disappointing. The lunch buffet is still okay but overall, if you want quality ingredients prepared with care, definitely go to Saffron. My boyfriend wanted me to give Cumin 3 stars but I'm standing by my 2 stars rating. read more

We have been here several times for their lunch buffet. The restaurant is small and very simply decorated, but that's okay because the food makes up for it. The buffet table isn't fancy, but the food is hot, fresh, and always so delicious. Everyone in our family can find something they like with the several vegetarian dishes, meat options, rice, and naan. They also have a little salad and dessert selection. I'm a huge fan of the butter chicken, my daughter loves the tandoori chicken, my son always picks the meatballs, and my husband likes it all! We have also been to the other Indian restaurant a few miles away with the lunch buffet, and while that other restaurant looks more upscale, the food at Cumin is far better. read more

I was visiting for work so am stuck in a hotel so ordered via mr delivery. Wish that website has customer reviews of the food. I ordered a chicken jalfrezi and garlic naan. The naan bread was pretty good. But the jalfrezi. Flavorless. Bland. Chicken was cut into think slices. Doesnt look like real chicken. Almost like processed cut exactly the same. And the veggies are perfectly square and tasted and looked like frozen veggies. Upon reading the other yelp reviews i discovered that the frozen veggies thing is an ongoing occurrence. Jalfrezi was also wayyy too creamy. Supposed to be more tomato based instead of cream. Hopefully the business checks their yelp reviews and makes some changes. According to me, the best place for Indian food in Kalamazoo-portage is the Indian cuisine. Cumin comes a close second but they do not substitute the rice which comes along with entrees with Naan and for me that's a deal breaker. read more

I hadn't tried this place yet, despite my absolute love of Indian food, because of the reviews here. I got adventurous and gave it a try. It was OK. It is slightly less expensive than Saffron, but it's all the same basic Indian American restaurant items. This is fine, but there are two other Indian restaurants in the area so someone needs to do something to stand out. Cumin's menu is smaller. Saffron wins because of the overall quality is notably better than Cumin or I.C. Cumin actually answered the phone, so right there they win over I.C....which never seem to answer the phone, and no longer has a working website.... I ordered Tikka Masala. It came with rice, (Saffron charges $3-4 for rice with an entree...seriously) I was surprised when the staff did not ask what spice level I wanted and I debated about making the request anyways, but didn't. It was ready in 10 minutes, which was appropriate as there was *no* guests there when I got there between 5-6pm.... The rice had the typical bits of cumin seeds giving it a nice subtle flavor. It wasn't super fluffy, but fine. The portion size and amount of chicken was typical. The sauce was more on the tamato-y side than creamy side. It had the typical spices of this dish. The whole time I was eating I was thinking that I wish I had ordered it spicier. It wasn't hot, but spiced. I would prefer more flavor. The chicken was fine, not buttery soft like at better places. I did spit some pieces of the chicken out that were not palatable. That really ruins a dish for me because I question the quality and am hesitently chewing on each piece waiting for another piece of fat, sinew, or gristle. Ease of the entire process is important to me and it is WAY easier to go here than Saffron with their busy-ness and horrendous parking lot on that gosh-forsaken W Main street trying to turn left out of the parking lot. The staff seemed nice and the whole process was prompt, kind, and professional. The decor is a touch more modern than most other Indian restaurants, but again, they need to stand out somehow. They seem to run out of the food on the buffet line and then you are waiting for 5 minutes. Kalamazoo gets a new indian restaurant! As a vegetarian, and someone who has eaten at many Indian places in my life, let me say I am happy with such a great new addition. The staff is quite lovely and pleasant. The decor is as you might expect in a strip mall but I know they are only going to make it better with time. Sort of like when you first move into a new apartment, sparse at first but then you make it home. Now for the food, I have sat in for the buffet as well as ordered take out for my family, both times I have been pleasantly surprised by how good the food is. For others here that are making the comparison to Saffron let me say this, Saffron is very good but a bit over priced. I have been loyally going to the buffet there for almost 10 years and they have never changed the dishes ever. India is such a dynamic country with so many foods to explore I find this approach boring and safe. I am happy to support this new addition to Kalamazoo and their personal vision for indian food. Just tried cumin today. The naan was dry and flavorless. The chicken curry was watered down, and tasted like the pre made curry you get at the store that heats up in the microwave. Overall I was pretty disappointed since the prices are considerably high. It might just be that I've been spoiled by having saffron since it opened. I don't know how long they'll be open for since there is a much much much better Indian restaurant just a few miles away. Don't waste your money at this place when you can have much better quality Indian food for the same price at saffron. read more

First 2 times i went there it was good, the 3rd time the waitress messed up the order, my friend and i ordered chicken tika masala and she brought us butter chicken. When i told her it was butter chicken she kept on insisting it was the chicken tika masala.
