It's a restaurant supply/food service company that so happens to have an "open to the public" retail operation as well. You'll find meats, seafood (including live lobster), produce, GIANT containers of mustard, ketchup, hot sauce, olive oil, you name it. They've also got plants/flowers for sale outside in the front. Inside also contains bread, milk, cheese, really all of the "essentials." In a pinch they do sell single rolls of toilet paper like you'll find in a hotel, and paper towels. They have some kitchen utensils if you're in need. Hell, I picked up a bottle of windshield washer fluid here too. Added bonus: they carry nuns of new skete cheesecake! If you aren't familiar with this, google it. It's made by local nuns and is delicious, puts Sysco to shame. $36 for a 4 lb cake. If they don't carry something here that you need, you can find it the dollar general or CVS that's right down the street. Despite not being anywhere near a full service grocery store, Green Mountain Food Service's store is a godsend for the depressed town of Whitehall. Remember to bring cash, or if you're someone who pays by check (how many people do that anymore?) you're covered. Same with EBT, that is accepted. GMFS does NOT accept credit or debit cards. There is an ATM and a restroom on site. Hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday-Saturday. The store is closed on Sunday.

A short drive up the Northway, to the next exit north of the Inn at Erlowest, and I found myself at this brand-new Price Chopper grocery store. It looked as though they had just pulled down the 'Grand Opening' signs, as this place was still sparkling on the insides. The shelves were fully stocked, the employees were very welcoming, and hardly anyone was inside (although I am sure that will soon change). I made my way back to the deli counter and the ladies brought out one massive tray of deli subs for the groomsmen, a second platter of wraps for the bridesmaids, and a big bag filled with chips and pretzels. They helped me to load up my cart, and then I was off to wander the aisles and pick up some mixers and bottled water. Checkout was a breeze, and again the staff was super-friendly and very thankful that I was shopping with them. I've been to so many deli counters, country stores....THIS PLACE??? A GEM! A GOLD MINE!!!! What a place! I looked at the chalkboard menu...hard to choose but I had a hankerin for a Philly. Now...I'll admit, I was hesitant to order the Philly Cheese Steak because sooooo many places toot that they use 'Ribeye' steak..when in actuality? They do not. This menu said: "Ribeye". Still....I've been burned so many many times before in other establishments..and I hate to say that!!!! I mean..if you have been in the biz as long as I have? You know. First bite and you know. Now as soon as I opened up the big clam shell container and lifted half of the Philly???????? I knew. "Yup"!!!, I said to my wife... "this is going to be a 10"!!! I could tell just by looking at it! The cheese was perfectly melted within and around the steak! Yup, I could tell. 1st bite: I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! A small portion of the overflowing Ribeye and Cheddar Cheese dripped down towards the bottom of the clamshell container....with a little moisture of the melted Ribeye fat.
