Wow. Nobody else has reviewed this Whitehall, NY hotspot in the years since my inaugural write up-…read moretime for an update! Most of what I said years ago still stands: the gas pumps are tight. The prices? They're up of course, but that's everywhere. Actually, the prices at this Cumby's are BETTER on some grocery items than the QuickChek store near my residence in NJ. For example, a box with 2 delicious Stouffer's French bread pizzas? $4.50 here. $5 for the same thing down at QuickChek. Considering this store is located in a food desert that can't even sustain a McDonald's, credit to Cumby's for not totally exploiting the customers. There is ONE parking spot on the left side of the store by the air pump (I don't think air is free, but not 100% sure on that). Staff was friendly and I appreciate them working on a holiday. One guy was emptying the outdoor trash cans. Cleanliness like that doesn't go unnoticed. Definitely download the app. You'll save 10 cents a gallon on gas and they give you free stuff on a regular basis. I hadn't been to this chain in a year and the app offered me a free chocolate bar. In case you're wondering, I went with peanut butter truffle flavor and am confident that it'll be worth the price paid. Beer selection? Heineken is as "top shelf" as you'll find. With the mid-tier being Labatt Blue, Yuengling, and I guess Bud. Bottom end? We're talking Keystone and upstate NY's classic: GENNY. I purchased a Dos Equis 6 pack for $8.99 (about the same as my local liquor store back home) and a 6 back of Icehouse tallboys for $4.99 in an effort to re-live my high school and early college days. Dad's taking a booze break and they have Heineken 0 six packs for $10. Not cheap but if you are avoiding booze and want something drinkable, it's pretty good. Much better than some "real" beers frankly. Stewart's remains the best c-store in town: they have a better variety of everything from hot food (pizza, hot dogs etc.), dairy products, actual vegetables, lots of frozen convenience foods, baked goods (from freihofer's packaged stuff to Stewart's buttered rolls and pastries), real maple syrup, and a "beer cave" that far surpasses the selection here. Plus they have more gas pumps and much more ample parking. Still, Cumby's has its place, particularly if you are coming from the south and aren't making the turn onto route 4 heading into Vermont. If you want to fill your tank and procure some basic provisions for your ultimate destination, this will do the job. That's all that really matters. Extra stars for the cleanliness and nice staff!
