Bunkhouse Burgers - Hot mess

Bunkhouse Burgers

Found this place by accident just driving by. I tried the Bacon Jam Burger with some regular fries…read more The burger was very good; the bacon jam gives a nice smoky flavor and the spicy pickles added a nice touch. Very much like a traditional smashburger; a little greasy, but mine was not overly greasy. Burgers are served wrapped in wax paper and that coupled with the decor gives a very old-school diner vibe. The fries were cooked perfectly. Golden & crispy on the outside, soft and steamy on the inside. I ordered the regular fries (not the seasoned fries), but they were still a tad bit on the salty side. The staff was young, but they knew what they were doing. The grill man served up a tasty burger and the young lady working the register & delivering food provided service with a smile and answered all my questions as a first time customer. My only knock on this spot is that the lobby/dining room area needs a thorough deep cleaning. The table tops were sticky, the seats had a lot of crumbs and food on them, and the floor could use a mopping. Ketchup & mustard bottles were sticky as well. On the plus side, the kitchen area looked clean and tidy (you can see right into it from where you sit). But the tables and chairs definitely need some TLC.

The buns are toasted just right so they are a wee bit crispy themselves. Chicken is juicy and tender. I ordered the plain white h comes with lettuce & tangy mayo but I also added Nashville hot spicy bacon as I did t wanna go the full way with the "everything" sandwich. Maybe next time. Everything here is made to order, including shoes, hand dipped onion rings, etc. will definitely be back Soon!

Went and visited my son up at school and both of us being burger fans took a shot at this spot…read more First and foremost it was nicer than I expected. I thought it would be more fast food in appearance, and in some ways it was with the self serve drink dispenser and plastic silverware, but aesthetically it was far more pleasing than any typical fast food burger spot. You know who I'm talking about. The counter person was absolutely wonderful dealing with us and our questions. Now onto the important stuff. Burgers are two patties and massive. You are definitely getting your money's worth. We split 3 different ones amongst us and they were all good: the mushroom, the southwest, and the brunch. The meat itself is a little flavorless but that might be cause typically I have the meat cooked to medium and these were well done. We weren't asked how we want them cooked so I'm assuming this is just how the cook all the patties. What I didn't like were the fries. They were cold and chewy like they have been sitting around for a while. My son ordered a caramel and it was absolutely delicious. So that was a huge positive. Overall it was a good experience and the prices were in good for the amount of food you get. I would definitely go again.

I made it a combo for as n extra 5.00 The straw for the drinks are real tiny. The burger was bland smooshed together in a ball ... Nice burger joint in Commerce. My "Beef" burger at 1/2 lb was large, well made, quite juicy and…read moretasty. The burger was made out of a blend of beef short rib and brisquet with fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and a specialty sauce. The sauce while good was something I would change in the future to straight up mustard as I think the burger would have been better based on personal preference. The burger also came with a side where I chose their house fries which were excellent and one of the better fries I have had in the area. Relative to staff and facility, the restaurant has a compact footprint which limits the amount of tables this business has along with counter seating. Something to keep in mind if you are headed here during busy dining hours like a Friday or weekend nite. Staff was very friendly with prompt service and nice followup throughout the meal. Overall a nice dining experience where if Burgers are your thing you should definately check this business out.

I really don't like giving bad reviews either, but I have to be honest. We waited almost a hour for our food. The place is not too big for seating, but there was one waitress. It took us 5ish minutes to be seated and another 10 for our order to be taken. The service was just very slow. As you know, I come for the biscuits and gravy at any place. My biscuit was hot, but my gravy was lukewarm which was odd. The flavor of them was just ok. The eggs did taste good. The breakfast burger I was told was good, but not something to rave over. I did not like that they had well water only. They definitely need to get an osmosis system. They offer bottled water but charge for it. I feel that's disappointing because you're forcing your clients well, not tap, water but they can buy a bottle? Well water has a very different taste and it was almost sour. The waitress however was a nice person. She was doing her best I'm sure. I'm sure the 2 cooks were nice people as well. The flavor of the food was not worth the wait and me giving it a second try however. I want to come back for the burger specials, but scared I'll wait a long time again for food.

Ambiance: The inside has black, white and red checkered floors, red tile walls, round red (with shiny flakes) counter stools and a vintage neon-ish clock. Service: the building is small, and the food is cooked in front of you. As soon as I walked in, the cook - David - cheerfully greeted me. Definitely a friendly, high energy guy, enthusiastically representing Detroit! Food: I ordered the striped catfish dinner with fries and coleslaw. The slaw was house-made with purple cabbage. I would have preferred the strips cut into smaller pieces. I could not identify the seasoning, it was ok. Maybe an acquired taste. The crinkle cut fries were also ok, I would have preferred seasoned though - probably frozen? The catfish, was taken out of refrigerator, battered and cooked in front of me. It was delicious! Gold corn meal, seasoning salt, pepper and maybe paprika? The way my late father used to do it! The 2 fillets were a generous size : 8 or so inches. I will definitely be back to try other items on the menu!
