Come back, Culturas! When this tapas joint opened up in 2008, I was excited -- I already loved El Serrano, and Culturas was just a kicked up version with more options and smaller plates. It quickly became my go-to place for special occasions and date night. To get there, you walk through the main dining area and take an elevator upstairs -- it feels like you're being whisked away to your own private VIP area. The tables upstairs are smaller and fewer, so it's naturally more intimate and less noisy than the main floor, below. The menu had everything you could want -- papas rellenos, yucca, lomo, lamb lollipops, chuletas, camerones, fried avocado, and the most delicious gazpacho I've ever had. When my family was in town, we used to order two or three plates each to share and a carafe or four of Sangria for the table. They changed chefs, they switched hours, they updated the menu (which no longer included gazpacho!), and the last time I was able to go was in 2018. Now the staff tells me Culturas is temporarily closed while they try and find another chef. It's a shame, because it really was one of a kind for Lancaster, so I hope they reopen and expand the hours again. Most recently they were only open two days a week with limited hours. The Culturas/El Serrano/Clementinas compound is certainly impressive; a Spanish villa replete in carved columns, wrought-iron railings, and leaded-glass windows arranged around a beautiful central courtyard. Service was also charmingly tolerant of our loud and exuberant party of four (some of us are the mothers of four-year-olds and don't get out much, much less drink two martinis with dinner, cough cough). Strolling in at 8pm on a Saturday sans reservation meant we waited just about fifteen minutes in the downstairs bar for a table upstairs at tapas-centric Culturas. Our smiling bartender poured sangria, shook out dry gin martinis, approved wine choices and made small talk. A round of four drinks was only $24, happily shocking his city kid. Sadly, I just can't issue more than three stars to the overall experience because the food is pretty pedestrian for tapas. There's nothing categorically bad about the food -- though the chicken "ceviche" (fully cooked, don't freak out) had an ick factor -- it's just overall bland and unexciting. Best dishes of what we tried: the yucca with the ropa vieja was delicious; crab "packages" with avocado mousse dip; avocado frito and a Boston cream pie cheesecake. The Santa Rita carmenere by the glass was tasty for $7 and it was most definitely a fun night out. Thanks to Josh our waiter who took excellent care of us and endured looking at beautiful baby pics on an iPhone. We'll be back and hopefully better behaved, for (fewer) drinks. read more

It's nice to have tapas in Lancaster PA. The tapas were good, not the best I've had but not bad. I can't help but feel that the dishes are toned down a bit for the locale. I most enjoyed the Pulpo al Olivo (octopus), the Charcuteria, and the Ropa Vieja. The Paquetitos de Cangrejo (little "packages" stuffed with crabmeat) were a big hit. The empanadas were also very good but you can get better ones cheaper in the scary parts of Reading. The ceviche was disappointingly bland. Not bad, just not very inspiring. My biggest complaint was that they seated our party at a table that was really too small for our group. For tapas to be fun, you need to have some real estate on your table for all your dishes. Still, we had a fun time. Tapas is such a great fun way to share food with friends. And it's worth going just to see the building that houses this restaurant compound. Went back here about a month ago (7/10/2015). Friends had been a month prior and noted the poor service (not enough servers on staff; servers appeared inexperienced). We arrived on time and were seated. Noted immediately there were only one or two servers on staff. Waited a half hour to get any attention once seated. Presentation was poor. Hot and cold tapas brought out at the same time, drinks missed, general disorganization. The food was very inconsistent. First, the good: The Avocados Frito (flash-friend avocadoes) were terrific, the Papas Rellenas (fingerling potatoes with a creamy sauce) and the papa Huancaina were decent. The Paquetitos de Cangrejo (Packages stuffed with crabmeat, leeks and cheese, lightly fried") were kind of small for $9, but I'm not a seafood guy, so maybe that's fine. The pinchos (kebab-type-things) were prepared well. The drinks were quite tasty. No problems there. Then the bad: The Gazpacho came out WARM. The Ropa Vieja (described on their menu as "pulled beef sirloin, braised with tomatoes, green peppers and onions, served over yucca purée" ) was half the size it usually was, and kind of looked like mushed up instant mashed potatoes with a spot of beef on them. The Tortilla Espanola ("A quiche like egg, potato and chorizo pie") was $6 and very light on the chorizo. I noted that the dish is listed as $5 on their menu, so a little insult to injury there. The Ceviche (Pescado del dia cold cooked in lemon juice, with cucumbers and red jalapeno) had thicker fish than I've ever seen in that dish. I would have worried about it being fully "cooked" through if not for the overpowering amount of lemon juice used to cure it. Of the food, about 33$ of the $72.50 was unacceptable. About $39.50 was acceptable to good. I tipped roughly 20% ($20) because I didn't want to punish the waiter in case staffing was the reason behind his inefficiency. I consider to have overtipped by $10, had the restaurant come through. This tapas restaurant has been around a few years, and the restaurant it shares space with (same owner), El Serranos for decades. I've been a patron of the establishment for 25 years, and this decline in quality and service is abominable. All in all, being 50% satisfied with a $100 food bill is unacceptable. And seeing the staffing and quality trend in the restaurant over the past few months demonstrates that this wasn't just an outlying event. I had better hopes for an anniversary dinner, guys. We've been to Culturas twice so far, and my only regret is that we didn't get to go to it sooner. I'll start from the beginning of what I love, because this is about to be as gushing of a review as you can get. What can I say, I really love this place and it's probably my favorite restaurant I've been to! First off, the decor and ambiance is very nice - plus it's kinda cool taking the elevator up and getting greeted as you come out by the host. And the entire El Serrano, Culturus, Clemtinas building is pretty impressive. Service wise we had an awesome server named Justin, you should definitely ask for him because he was knowledgeable, friendly, and funny as hell. Although it has an upscale vibe to it, they don't seem to mind if you're wearing more casual clothes, which is nice if you're like me and worry about that kind of thing. :P Now to the food - oh god, the food. Before you do anything else, do yourself a favor and get some Pinchos. These are filet skewers that are, hands down, the best thing in there. The meat is so juicy and the taste is incredible, if you get out of there without ordering at least one extra you have far more willpower than we do. Between the two dinners, we sampled almost everything but a few of the cold tapas, and the large plates (I'll update the next time we go, because I think we'll be trying some of the large plates as well). For the rest, from both of our dinners there: The ceviche was perfectly made, with a great, light flavor to it. It was my first ceviche, so I was a bit wary at first, but it was definitely good. The avocado frito has a very interesting taste and texture to it - it is very sweet (balsamic reduction on it, I believe, and with the avocado it adds up quickly). I personally liked it, my boyfriend didn't due to the sweetness. Tortilla Espanola is their quiche style dish, once again this was my first quiche so I don't particularly have the experience to compare to others, but it was received favorably among those that eat that style of dish quite often (I led a sheltered culinary life up until the last two years or so). Cocktail de Camarones is your typical shrimp cocktail - I loved the salsa, and the shrimp were great too. Papa a la Ocopa was a big hit at the table, I don't think that plate lasted more than 2 minutes or so. Pan de Penelope is their bread, and it's a great little dish. The dipping oils are very high quality, and I'm a big fan of this style of bread as well. Ropa Vieja has great tasting meat, and I really liked the yucca puree that came with it (I'm a big yucca fan now, thanks to Culturas). Ceviche de Pollo is the chicken dish, and it has a light and succulent sauce, great organic chicken, and yucca (yay for yucca). This one was a bit overshadowed the first time we went, because we got the trio der terra which had the lamb, chicken, and pinchos on it, and those pinchos just blew everything else out of the water. Corbatas de Pasta is a basic pasta with pesto sauce, although simplistic it was expertly done and tasted great, very well received. Empanadas are something I've always been a fan of, and I really liked their take on it. The pastry was a bit lighter, more akin to a puff pastry, but it definitely worked and the filling was delicious. Chuletas - lamp lollipops, need I say more? Well I will anyway - perfectly cooked, with a great sauce, and the side is a yam puree that had an amazing taste as well. Highly recommend this dish. Paquetitos de Cangrejo are little fried crab "packets" with cheese and leeks, served with an avocado sauce in a plantain bowl. First time trying plantains, and the crab packets were probably third favorite of the tapas. I never would have thought of putting leeks in the mix, and it does mix very well with the other components of the dish. Escabechado I personally wasn't a huge fan of, for some reason, but our dining companions loved it. Dessert wise, Justin told us that they have their own pastry chef up there, so of course I had to go for dessert. The first up was the creme burelee, and it was excellent, with grand mernier (not sure how to spell it) worked in for a better than normal taste. Second time around was their mocha tiramisu - that poor dessert didn't have a chance, it was so decadent that I could hear my diet plan screaming from a mile away. Well worth it. As far as the drinks go, I had a wine that I cannot, for the life of me, pronounce or remember, so that's probably not too helpful. It was good, it's the one with a blueberry taste to it. However, I'd recommend that you go with the sangria. It went well with the overall meal, and it just tasted incredible. Now if you've read through all of this, thanks! I'm really happy to share my experience with Culturas, and hope to go soon so I can fill in the missing blanks on the tapas menu. :P If you're looking for recommendations on where to start, I'd say go with the pinchos, crab packets, lamp, and ceviche. read more

As most reviews suggest the tapas are very tasty and the service was incredible. We also enjoyed the sangria. Excellent tapas in Lancaster. It is a little bit outside of downtown. But otherwise the building is very nice and the food is very good. They were also very accommodating to the fact that I have an allergy. Especially when I changed my order once or twice. But each time our server was more than happy to check for me. The menu is divided into cold tapas and hot tapas with numerous combination options. For my Cold Tapas i ordered the fried avocado, and for my hot tapas I ordered the pinchos. The fried Avocado was a little surprising because it came out piping hot, which i thought kind of unusual. But regardless they tasted very good and were in no way burnt. They were very rich as well. The pinchos (Fillet tips on skewers with onion tomato and pepper) were cooked perfectly and were seasoned nicely. My only complaint about them is that some pieces were oddly a little fatty but otherwise a very delicious tapas meal right in the middle of Amish Country! Surprising but in a good way read more

June 5, 2010 We set out on Saturday evening to find a great place to have dinner. Upon arrival at El Serrano, we were graciously greeting by valet and a helpful hostess staff. We arrived thinking that we were entering only one restaurant, but in fact it was three restaurants in one. We decided to have dinner at the second floor restaurant, Culturas and we are so glad we did. The atmosphere was quiet, romantic, and one of a kind for it's location. Our waiter, Justin, was excellent. He was knowledgeable, easygoing, and accommodating. Our meal that evening arrived in shifts which was a fun and quite relaxing way to enjoy dinner. This gave us the chance to share in conversation and anticipate what the next course would be. The food was delicious, flavorful, and authentic, and we thoroughly enjoyed every bite. Culturas is a Peruvian tapas restaurant. We used to come here quite often but somehow got out of the habit. However, we thought of it tonight and we are so happy we did! There is a new menu since we were here last, so it was a whole new culinary experience. The Avocado Fritos, Papas Rellenos, and the Paquetitos were all served with the idea of sharing and all were delicious. The Chupe (soup) Camarones is really meant for one person, but they happily served it in two bowls so we could share. We are not drinkers so the choice of non-alcoholic frozen drinks was a pleasant surprise. The wonderfully prepared Piña Colada and Margarita were a real joy. Our server was well-informed, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. We will definitely return soon. read more

My first time at this location. Checked in at El Serrano but didn't realize that Culturas is a somewhat separate entity. Went on a Thursday night and enjoyed nine plates of tapas and a pitcher of white sangria with two girlfriends. Victor, our waiter, was attentive, knowledgable about the dishes and restaurant in general, enthusiastic and provided great recommendations! Only downfall is that live music wasn't a part of the evening, but we were assured that live music is a staple on Fridays and Saturdays. Can't wait to come back and also try El Serrano, the "mother" restaurant! read more

My husband and I have dined at Culturas many times in the past couple years, especially for celebrations - birthdays, anniversaries, etc. We even rented a private room to host 25 or so people for our wedding party dinner in 2011. I made a reservation for Sunday, Jan. 5 for 2 people at 5 p.m. My husband and I have a 17-month-old, so we got a sitter, and we were looking forward to our evening out (in addition to the baby, my mom is in Hospice care with end-stage cancer and I'm a primary caretaker, so we don't get many special events to ourselves). We reserved a $25 private room at "Clementinas" as a special treat. I received a telephone call from "Heather" at 3:30 p.m. that day informing me that our reservation had been cancelled because of the "bad weather." True, it had been freezing rain earlier in the day, but the temperatures were rising and roads were scheduled to continue improving. Regardless, I certainly understand if a restaurant has to close because it doesn't want to endanger its employees. BUT, Heather continued by saying that El Serrano (the restaurant downstairs) was open and we could still use the private room but just order off the El Serrano menu. Which made me wonder why the roads are safe for El Serrano but not Culturas? So, my husband called and spoke to Heather who admitted that we were their only reservation that night. Clearly, they just didn't feel like bringing their staff in for one table. We cancelled the reservation completely and my husband let her know it's unlikely they'd be able to accommodate us in the future (read: I will NEVER bother going there again). I can't tell you how many of my friends have tried this restaurant on my recommendation, and now I am letting them all know that it's not even worth getting your hopes up to go there. I understand from a friend/former employee that this is something they do QUITE OFTEN when they don't have "enough" reservations. It's terrible business, awful customer service and reeks of a company who will not be in business for much longer. Luckily for us, a lot of other restaurants are doing tapas and there's a new place opening soon that will get our business. read more

Ah, Culturas... this place is a treat.... Well before I get started this is actually 3 different restaurants /eating experiences in ONE large and gorgeous building. The atmosphere itself is reason enough to at least check this place out once! We expressed interest in the building and our server went and fetched the manager, who- at the end of our meal offered us a tour of the whole place... I mean WOW, Def. inquire about being showed around- you will be impressed. (the place is so big the tour took almost half an hour!) Apparently the owner who is from Peru, went to great lengths to recreate his childhood home with this building. Everything from the hand carved wood to the wrought iron and tile was flown from Peru to build it. Its incredibly intricate and ornate. Reminds me of a favorite place in St. Augustine, Florida... So its even more of a nostalgic attraction to me :) Okay, onto the food.... So far we have only eaten at Culturas (bc we like it so much haha).... To dine at Culturas you will be guided through El Serrano (which is the Mexican inspired restaurant downstairs) and to an elevator which will take you upstairs... This is where Culturas - which is their "Tapa" restaurant is located. The menu offers several cold plates (salads, ceviche, gazpacho, etc..) and hot plates.... There are about 5 large plates which include some daily specials, so if you want to order some tapas for appetizers and then eat a normal sized meal- you have that option. I personally like to order a bunch of small plates AS my meal bc I love tasting numerous things. 3 small plates are usually enough for one person, depending on which you choose. We like to get a whole bunch and just share, its part of the fun :) Tapas range from 5-12 dollars. So you could spend a little, or a lot, its up to you ! Specific selections I can recommend... AVOCADO FRITO - if you love avocado like I do... this bad boy is fried and served with a creamy wasabi dipping sauce. yum PINCHOS- for meat lovers, this is the best*.... extremely tender and flavorful filet tips on kebobs with peppers, onions, and a delicious sauce. CHULETAS- my man loves these, lollipop lamb chops with a cilantro sauce. PAQUETITOS de CANGEJO- little flaky pasty pockets stuffed with crab meat, cheese, leeks.... so good! We have also tried some of the Combination Trios, which are very good.. off the top of my head I can recall the Trio del Mar which had different kinds of shrimp. We have also tried some specials and large plates. One time the "fish of the day" was an African Perch over purple potatoes and cippolini onions with a creamy dill sauce, and it was one of the best things I have ever consumed. I'd love to check out "Clemintinas" sometime, which is the third restaurant. Its something you actually have to schedule at least a week or so in advance, you actually speak with the chef on the phone to select a 5 course meal, which includes a wine with each course. You have your own private little room and server. Its 75$ a person, but it would be great for a special occasion! (hint hint babe) All in all, we love this place.... Go order a few tapas and a carafe of sangria, you won't regret it!..... (The court yard is gorgeous too, I imagine they will be opening that up soon.) *would recommend reservations* read more

Did not like his place. Avocado fries were nothing to get excited about. Our server was good but always trying to upsell. Our group experience was terrible overall. Drink orders forgotten. The octopus was nasty. The clincher though was that we discovered bats......yes actual live bats chittering away in the bathroom stairwell ceiling. When pointed out to the manager she didn't seem terribly concerned but promised an exterminator would show up the next day. I have photo proof of the bat situation. read more

My wife and I got 8 small plates to share. My favorite plate was the shaved octopus with black olive sauce. I enjoyed the aged Serrano ham and the potato and crab special. The ceviche was good, the fried avocado was drowned out by the balsamic and the pulled beef dish was quite tasty (my wife loved the potatoes in this dish). I didn't care for the empanadas, all I could taste was the pastry, I couldn't taste the spiced beef filling at all. There were more plates I wanted to try but we were quite content/full after sharing 8 small plates. A tad pricey but I would do it again for a special occasion. The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 4 is because I would expect to be wow'd when spending over $100. read more

Visited for a 2nd time. The food is very good... the fried avocado is definitely a favorite and love the whole tapas idea. As before, the service was once again lacking. I had made reservations almost a month in advance for a group of 12. That day called to change our group to 7 which seemed to be no problem. We arrived and table was still set for 12. It was Valentine's weekend and it very crowded, however we waited close to 10 minutes before I had to go track down the manager to find our waitress. All night our party seemed to be an after-thought. Final issue was the bill - waitress couldn't figure out or explain about adding in gratuity. I know restaurants do add it on for parties larger than six but she just couldn't figure it out. Was another 10-15 minutes before manager had to re-run our credit cards. Overall, I probably would go back since this the only Tapas place in Lancaster. Maybe in the summer to the courtyard. Just hope they can figure out the service aspect. read more

I went here on a weekday to celebrate my husband's birthday.We took our 9month old son along with us.The entire experience was really good. We shared 6 tapas between us.We started out with the ceviche- i really enjoyed it, but my husband didn't as he found it to be too citrusy for his taste.While waiting for our next set of dishes,our waitress treated us to 2 complimentary dishes: pan de penelope,which was almost like a breadstick served with spanish olive oil,I am definitely no expert on the nuances of olive oils but I found it to be pretty fruity.The other dish was skewers of serrano ham,manchego cheese and a tortelini. We ordered a few others like crab packages,beef kebabs- which was really moist and flavorful,beef empanadas,potato fritters stuffed with ground beef ,olives and raisins,spicy chicken wings.The wings were very ordinary,I think I would have gotten better ones at McLeary in Marrieta or Tilted Kilt,Mount Joy. The portions were regular tapas sized portions,modest but filling.We didnt have room for sharing any of the large plates or desserts.A family that was also dining that evening,highly recommended the 120z filet to share(there is an additional cost of $4 for sharing).We will definitely be trying that next time. I enjoyed the service,what I was really impressed was that our waitress seated us at an area,closer to a family with kids.The couples were seated at another area- I do respect some people's need to be away from a babbling,drooling 9month old,especially when they are dining out. A must visit for both residents and out-of-towner's like me. First and foremost, the atmosphere is remarkable. This restaurant is one of three in the same building, owned by the same owner (Manuel), and is clearly a labor of love. We were able to take a tour of the building after our meal to see the chef's table, the several bar areas, the varying locales that you can enjoy the cuisine and last but certainly not least, the wine cellar. The wood work and metal work throughout the building are both phenomenal. Live music was available, and very good on the night we visited but was not overwhelmingly loud like some restaurants (able to both enjoy the music while still carry a conversation at the table). Now lets get to the food. Cold and hot tapas options were available as well as a few larger entree type plates. We ordered 16 dishes for the 6 people in our party which turned out to be the perfect amount to leave that yearning for the house-made desserts. My favorites of the evening were the cold ceviche (perfect acidity, great textures and well balanced seasoning), a toasted piece of bread with goat cheese and a tomato marmalade on top (I've been a sucker for tomato marmalade this summer) and a Peruvian take on shrimp cocktail. The Malbec and Syrah we chose were both excellent. We chose two desserts (rum cake and the grand marnier creme brulee) which were an excellent finish to the meal. The only thing holding me back from the 5th star is the inexperience of our server. His pour for tasting the selected wine was incredibly heavy (half a glass of wine) and proceeded to try to pour that wine before we were ready to accept the bottle. Also, I would have appreciated a couple more visits to the table for water refills. But do not let this stop you from visiting as I'm certain the other servers would not make this mistake, and are outstanding. I will definitely be planning a return to Culturas and/or the other two attached establishments. read more

We went last night for my husbands birthday and the first thing I noticed was that at 7pm on a Friday night it was almost empty! We had been there twice before and it was always bustling so this made me a little concerned. Our cold tapas were nothing to get excited about. We had a creamy crab dish served on a log of cold mashed potatoes. The potatoes were totally our of proportion to the amount of crab. The vegetarian dish was essentially a few kinds of corn and onions in what tasted like straight vinegar. The waiter gave us the hard sell on the octopus and we decided to give it a try as he described it as "much more tender than calamari". What came out on the place was, I kid you not, a 12 inch long tentacle with some incredibly salty and foul tasting olive sauce smeared over it. When we told the waiter it was chewy like a rubber band he said "huh, its not supposed to be, maybe it was slightly under cooked" but didn't offer alternative dish nor remove from our check and it was $18!. The flash fried panko avocado dish was a dark dark brown, way overcooked for panko and tasted like it had been fried in old oil. In addition, my $11 agave margarita with fruit mash tasted terrible, like the fruit had turned. So sad. The last two times we had gone we were so impressed with the dishes, apparently this is a new menu and in addition to very limited options we spent $100 for two people on disappointing food and service that while attentive was just too intense with the sales pitch.
