Today February 12th the Singles/Friendly group of Sandston Baptist Church had our monthly luncheon here at about 11:30. AM, Tim was our server for our group of 11, Tim was very attentive to our large party, checking on our every need. My BFF Deborah and I shared the Tommy Roast Beef Club Sandwich and French fries we both had water with lemon, Deborah also had coffee. The sandwich was delicious, several in our group got the chicken salad sandwich with chips, another got the fried oysters. another of our group ordered Fried green tomatoes appetizers to share with the table. we all had a great time at Culs Courthouse Grill, a few had eaten here before as Deborah and I had and requested this month's restaurant choice and so happy that we did. Since 1792, this historic building has been an iconic landmark! The dim lighting and the dark wood adds to the rustic atmosphere. Some of the rickety benches have cushions which need some attention. But I guess it's part of the charm in this quaint restaurant. They have music here sometimes and a cool outdoor area. We ordered chicken tenders and sandwiches which were tasty! The service was polite and friendly albeit a tab slow. Such a wonderful find in Charles city. read more

Well, I've had to pass this place a 100 times over the years and didn't even know it was right around the corner. We ended up visiting here because of friends who heard great things. Our visit was nice. First the location: an old joint that clearly is full of history. The place seemed very clean, including the mens's and ladies' rooms (the wifey told me). :)) The food: We all liked our meals. I had the cheeseburger and fries, which were cooked exactly as I ordered. Again, all of us liked our meals. Now, I will say, and I am not trying to be mean, the meals were good--not great. There was no specialization or flavors. Our server was a nice fella. He was clearly very busy but did check on us a few times. So overall a decent place that I would visit again. My fiancée & I visited Cul's Courthouse Grille while on a short little vacation in Charles City. It was our first time here and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. You can tell this is the type of place where everybody knows everybody. The inside is decorated nicely and gives a really at home vibe. We arrived around dinner time and the restaurant quickly filled up while we were there. We ordered off of the "special's menu" for our appetizer & main course. We chose the fried cheese balls with hot honey as our appetizer. They were so good that we didn't even get a picture. Then for our main course we both chose the beer battered rockfish which came highly recommended by the staff. It is served with a salad, hush puppies, fries and coleslaw. Everything was absolutely delicious. We ordered a slice of coconut cake to go because we were both stuffed. I ordered the fried green tomatoes and onion rings for an appetizer. The onion rings were good and the friend green tomatoes with sauce were very good. The Courthouse burger was cooked correctly but nothing to write home about. My wife ordered the Club Sandwich and said it was just okay with meat just thrown on it and just average. She also told me the place had a stale odor maybe. The service was prompt however and food served quickly. All in all not bad and not great either. read more

Stopped by for an early Saturday lunch and tried a few new dishes. Food: Lobster Bisque was still delicious as last time but it cooled very quickly. I love my soup hot, so next time I might ask for them to heat it up hot! Chicken wings-very good and the one sauce was flavorful. Good ranch and blue cheese as well as it came with carrots and celery. Fried green tomatoes-nice and crispy coating. Crabcake sandwich-not much filler (barely any) lots of crab! Also came with a pasta salad that was good. Our server was sweet and checked on us often. Brought my husband a sample of a beer on tap to make sure he liked it. The owner even stopped by and talked a little football with my husband and made sure our meal was good. The restaurant is in an old house and literally has a homey feel. There is a small bar and it's not overly large inside, altogether about 8 tables. The bathroom is also large one stall! This restaurant is a very rustic gem. The food was amazing and the people there were awesome. Some of the grannies at the bar loved my fedora! There was also live music. The bathrooms were clean and stocked up with chapstick, toothpicks, and mints. There was also a "Pin where you are from" board and I was surprised of how much people come from all over the place. read more

Update: Have been here every time we visit the area, but haven't reviewed in a while... This place is still awesome. The food is fresh and homemade. The table of 4 next to us each got a different meal and were raving about it so much, they passed their plates around the table so they could each take a bite. So funny! Today we ate outside on their great little side patio. We tried the homemade chocolate mousse cake which was incredible. Eric waited on us and he was not only attentive, but extremely personable. Last week, we met with some friends out in Charles City County for a dinner out at Cul's Courthouse Grille. Now, I apologize for the lack of photos for this review! We were chatting and carrying on and having such a fun time that I didn't want to stop and take photos. When we first arrived, parking was easy to find and plentiful. We were greeted at the door immediately by who I believe was the owner's son. Right away, chairs were flying all around to make a table for a party of nine. The chairs around the table were mismatched in the most charming way. It was as if each person had a personalized seat. The wooden booths were lined with overstuffed cushions, and looked inviting. No sooner than we were seated, we were offered menus and drinks. The menu was quite creative and inviting! My husband decided on a cider to start his evening, which he enjoyed. It was delicious! It wasn't too sweet, as hard ciders go. So, our friend ordered the fried green tomatoes and onion rings for the table to share. What an exciting time it was for my husband who had never tried fried green tomatoes before! Both appetizers hit the mark on being golden brown and delicious. The crispiness of the onion rings and fried green tomatoes made for a satisfying crunch. The sauces with each were perfect for added flavor. And again, our appetizer plates were adorably mismatched. This made for a true family dinner feel! When it was time for the main course, the same gentleman who seated us, served us. Chatty as we were, he asked us to please quiet down for a moment so he could make an announcement. I felt a little bad, as I didn't want to be rude to this kind man, so I immediately quit talking. "Everyone enjoy your dinner!" he cheered as he finished dropping off the last few plates of food. What a warm welcome! For dinner, both my husband and I ordered a favorite: the cheeseburger. Charred flavor, melted cheddar, and toppings united for a flavorful, juicy burger experience. And the seasoned fries were just that! Crispy and delicious. As we were winding down our evening, the owner of the Grille came over to our table to chat with us. She was a pleasure to chat with! Even the restroom had personality - it was decorated with festive white lights, some charming fabrics, and a full-length mirror. Why did it take me 10 years to discover Cul's? What an absolute GEM of a restaurant. The place DRIPS WITH CHARACTER, like their ooey gooey homemade pimento cheese that they use on Edna's Chicken Sandwich. Everything - and I mean everything - was perfect. We may return for dinner!!!! Our Family Gathering met here and SO enjoyed the place, the people and the food! The staff was VERY efficient and the cook certainly was very talented, as we LOVED our SUMMER SALAD which included Mandalin oranges, strawberries, grilled chicken and many other selections, with tasty dressing options to go with it. And the Peach Cobbler made dessert a fabulous close-out for this wonderful choice of "Where to meet?" The drive from Williamsburg was a beautiful drive, given the beautiful day. Nothing of significant note here other than the staff and the location. It's just a few hundred feet off the Virginia Capital Trail. The menu is very limited. They're sweet tea is exceptional and they have plenty of free parking. Nell & Laurin and real nice and took good care of me. read more

This place is a cute little eatery, which is nice since I don't think there's much of anything else in the area. Nothing too fancy but decent food. Not a lot of options, but basic salad/sandwich/burger options. I thought the service was good and maybe because they don't get a lot of out of towners, one of the employees chitchatted with us about what we were visiting. I had the courthouse convict (chicken, bacon, cheese, lettuce, in a tortilla). I wish they had MORE punny names with the courthouse. Yeah I get it, your next to a courthouse and that's why the name, but might as well capitalize on it. The potato chips were great and had that nice thick crunchy texture. There were a lot of bikes outside and the parking lot wasn't paved and was pretty full when we got there, so I bet it's nice if you can bike, to get here that way. Cul's is a one of a kind find. The restaurant was recommended by fellow (motorcycle) bikers while crossing on the Jamestown Ferry. We enjoyed the hodge-podge nature of the inside decor. We were immediately invited in for self-seating. The waitress gave us details about many homemade items on the menu. I had the summer salad with homemade raspberry vinaigrette dressing. I've never had a better version of that dressing. Yum. Hubby got the bbq pork sandwich. He said it was too wet, so he wasn't a big fan. Our glasses never emptied. Cul's has been a favourite of ours since it opened in 2009 in a refurbished 1872 general store across the street from the Courthouse and the Heritage Public Library. At this point, we've eaten pretty much everything on the menu, and it's ALL good. (Except the coffee, sadly. That I keep coming back should tell you all you need to know about the food and service.) I ordered the Friday night special - fried chicken breasts with a honey-Tabasco drizzle, served with sautéed vegetables, mashed potatoes, and one of Miss Viv's famous homemade rolls. I'm not sure what breed of chicken this was, but it must be related to Dolly Parton! The chef was on his A game tonight- the breading was crisp and well seasoned, not greasy like some other places I've eaten. The chicken was tender and juicy. The honey-Tabasco glaze is, I admit it, better than my own. Best I've had since our pilgrimage to Lafayette, Louisiana. The sautéed veggies were a delicious medley of squashes, tomatoes and green beans, and the potatoes were delicious and perfectly mashed- light and fluffy with just enough lumps to prove their pedigree. As to Miss Viv's rolls, how can you complain about big, fluffy, homemade yeast rolls, served oven fresh and steaming?!? Darling Bride got the Courthouse Burger, a big, juicy all-beef burger served with choice of cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles- the works. She assures me that it was cooked to perfection- medium rare. We decided to skip appetizers, with deep regret, as Cul's fried green tomatoes are the best I've had in all my years. With cake waiting at home, we skipped dessert, too. Here's the most important thing to know about visiting Cul's: if there's coconut cake on the dessert trolley when you walk in, order a slice for dessert as soon as they ask "what can I get you to drink, hon?" Because it will probably be gone if you wait and order after supper. Some little old church lady makes it, and I pray the good Lord keeps her healthy and spry for years to come! The live music was a darn good solo guitarist who had 3 he switched through, covering the Beatles, the Allman Brothers, old bluegrass tunes, Amazing Grace, and more. The music changes, and isn't offered every night- they do karaoke and Family Feud and stuff, too. The special, the burger, and two soft drinks (the sweet tea is always on point) came in just under $35. Not bad for two suppers and tomorrow's lunch! read more
