They were scheduled between 2 and 6. At 7, an employee named Mike got back to me saying I should've been told the crew couldn't come. He told me he'd get someone to me at 8, then 8:30, then 9:00. In that time, he told me he wouldn't send anyone because (he claimed) I was unwilling to pay the 4h minimum despite my having arranged with the salesperson that I would. I only needed a mattress moved and was willing to pay the full amount, but went ahead and figured it out myself when by 8:50, no one was there and I needed to leave my house to get dinner. Mike then refused to get the mover a ride home -- he didn't have a car -- so I gave the poor guy a ride back his house. I was going to pay for a 2 person team, and was sent one person three hours past the end of their arrival window, by a manager who tried to refuse me service. A friend used Culmer several months ago and said they were OK, so I asked them for an estimate. They were reasonably priced at $110/hr, and very kind and professional on the phone. This did not align with my experience. 1. There were three movers. I was told theyd arrive between 8am-10am. At 9am, one man showed up at my door step, asking if the others had arrived. They had not. He sat on my front door step and smoked a cigarette. 2. The team lead showed up at 10am (After Shannon, the manager called me at 9:36am, to say he was on his way, and apologized for not calling earlier.) We now had 2/3 movers. 3. I had purchased 3 mattress pads prior to moving, which the team lead was unaware of. Therefore he asked the other mover to go purchase them. 4. The third mover arrived at 10:40am with the mattress pads. Keep in mind, I am paying hourly for 3 movers. 5. I moved 1 mile down the street, in the same neighborhood. It took almost an hour for the movers to go from one house to another. When they finally showed up, the truck was stuck on a hill. The back tire was off the ground. I was told these men were professionals, so I was shocked they were inexperienced enough to get the truck stuck on a steep hill. I understand these types of things happen. However this was an extra 40 minutes, on top of their 1 hour lunch break they took, on my time. 6. While waiting for them to arrive, and watching them attempt to get the truck un-stuck, I called the manager, Shannon, four times, and the owner, Mike, twice. Neither time did they pick up, or call me back. Both of their mailboxes were full so I couldn't leave a voicemail. 7. While loading and unloading the truck, they took long breaks. I was not sure where they disappeared to, or what they were doing. Again - I felt my time was not respected. 8. At the end of the job, I told the movers I'd be paying the bill and their tip online. They said Culmer takes a long time to pay them, and they often have problems with Culmer. This is not what I want to hear, knowing this company has my credit card number on file. 9. The moving company then charged my card for a total of 5 hours. Overall, I expected more from this company as they appeared very professional on yelp. The three movers were kind, but unprofessional. I don't like to write bad reviews but I think this is unacceptable. If I had to do it again, I would be more cognizant of which specific team was helping me move. Culmer moving was SUPPOSED to move me from 8am-12pm Saturday March 23rd. After approximately 10 calls starting at 10:09 am ,between my wife and I , we were unable to reach anyone. The main number was forwarded to another phone number where you could only send your number to them as the mailbox was full and you could not send any kind of text. After 2pm, after I already called around and got College Hunks (412-226-0859) moving last minute, I finally get an email as well as another email for another person. Apparently this is the blanket message (pics below) they send to everyone when they are hungover and don't feel like working. Do yourself a favor.... if you need to be out of a property on time, skip Culmer and call College Hunks, they were at my place in an hour ready to work. Three Lazy Men in a truck. the owner has no drivers license and no truck had to use a famlily member obtain a truck for my Move on 4/30/2023. The arrival time was between 8am and 10 am did not arrive until 12pm. They took my furniture apart to add more time on to the job. They took the legs off of my tables and chairs another tactic to add time on to the job dented my refrigerator that was brand new purchased, and when I said something about the dent I was told it was already there and true brand new refrigerator again they or three lazy men and a truck they didn't even put the furniture where they were told to. Since we were new in town, I had to rely on yelp and proceeded with this business. We had to move stuff from freight terminal to a 2 BR apartment. Here are some of the concerns I had (have) with this business. 1) Their co-ordination is horrible. The quote you get from a staff member is no where close to what you will end up paying (this coming from a job that needed less than 2 hours of moving). Also, every time I call them from a pick up point, different person picks up the phone (never connects to the concerned dispatch party). 2) Sketchy pricing. I was told that I would have to pay for a minimum of 3 hours for a moving job, which I thought was reasonable. However, the moving guys charged us for five hours (took a little under 2 hours for the process). Their explanation was "first and last 3 days of the month are considered peak". (This gets back to my first concern. Why wasn't I informed about this earlier??). I took this concern to Jeremy and did not get any response. I had high hopes for Culmer moving, especially given they were ready to work around my need to move on a Sunday. I spoke with JC, agreed on a time, and the crew came on-time. I should add that this was just a loading job, loading up a 4 room apartment on a rented 26 foot U-haul. In other words, labor only. So the guys come, and we had most of our stuff packed - I had gotten a ton of supplies with the U-haul: pads, plastic wrap, etc. When I told the guys, they looked at me like I just landed from outer space. They quickly started loading after I showed them what was ours (stuff from basement, and from the apartment (we lived in a Sq Hill duplex). I had a lot of boxes of books, heavy, and they immediately loaded these first and evidently got tired. So when they got to the furniture, it really seemed like they just didn't give a shit. And, frankly, since they weren't unloading, they didn't. We had a lot of childrens items clearly marked (one was a huge box of plush toys, clearly marked - plush toys). Now, logic would dictate that you'd probably put this on top, as it is light. Nope. These guys tossed it on the bottom and packed boxes of books over it. I only noticed when unloading, because when I tried to offer some suggestions on what to pack I was given "I'm a professional" line. They clearly didn't care, knowing they'd be long gone before their shitty job came to light. So, in addition to packing light stuff under heavy stuff they didn't bother to even do basic disassembly of furniture. I had a large wooden desk (pretty expensive, a simple desktop with 3 full sides for support. It had about 10 screws, takes about 5 minutes to assemble/disassemble. What do these guys do? Toss it in, then proceed to pack it with stuff so that when contents shift it will immediately crack and become useless, which unfortunately happened. Now, at no time was I consulted about the best way to do this, minimize potential damage, etc. Basically, trust us was their response. Which you should do with professionals. Who care about doing a good job. Now, the truck is almost loaded and the crew leader informs me that I don't have straps. He "gifts" me one from their truck, which is inadequate. Never does he say, "bro, you need like three straps, go buy some ASAP at u-HAUL or from me." I'd have done that in a sec. Instead, they proceed to load the whole truck up and *then* inform me that the lack of straps will potentially result in a royal fuckup. But it didn't matter, because they'd thrown all my stuff on the truck and were anxiously checking their watches so they could GTFO, as it was Sunday afternoon. Total losses: one bookshelf destroyed, one desk, one large bathroom cabinet whose legs bucked due to the lack of straps, dog crate side punched in, and a cracked train table. They also lost a ton of Ikea mounting hardware, but that's totally understandable (replaced for free). Now, I'm not expecting perfection - moving is not an exact science, but many of these issues could have been avoided with a modicum of preparation and foresight. Which is what you'd expect from professionals. In any case, after unloading the truck with local movers in DC, they informed me how shitty a job this was and unfortunately had to help us unload our trashed furniture directly to the curb (thankfully the next day was garbage day). Their exact words were "whoever loaded this up got tired from the book and just started throwing stuff in after." They even threw in our neighbor's road bike, which I had specifically told them not to. Luckily I could have a relative who helped with the move return it to Pittsburgh. I called JC, he fed me some BS about how he was going to "make it right," and never heard from him again after I sent him a dozen or so pictures documenting the job. He'll probably reply that he's "waiting to hear from his insurance company" but the fact is they knowingly did a shitty job. read more

I used Culmer for an in-town move, moving 2 apartments into 1 new apartment. I did all of the packing before, and they just did the loading and unloading. The total bill was $800 for an July move. They require a $100 deposit and then $500 of the bill in cash (which seemed a bit odd, but whatever). The crew did a great job. They arrived on time, and were very careful with all of my things. Okay...deep breaths...I will say that this company was very organized prior to my boyfriend's move. Sent me the quote via email very promptly and called to remind my boyfriend of his appointment time the day before the move. However, his appointment window was from 3 to 7 p.m. and the movers pulled into his apartment at 9:20 p.m. He first got a call at 4:30 p.m. telling him the movers would arrive in an hour. We called them 2 hours later to see if they were lost. Because my boyfriend had to work overnight, I had to be at his old apartment and let them into the new house. I felt bad because once they arrived, the three guys worked really quickly and had the move done in less than 3 hours total. By the time they finished, it was past midnight. They apologized and said that all the crews booked that day ended up spending 8+ hours on jobs that were supposed to take 4 hours. Culmer Movers covers up their poor customer experiences by forcing you to sign a contract stating that they will resolve your claim IF you agree not to post a negative review. EXTREMELY MISLEADING if you ask me. I wish I would have read honest reviews like the one you are about to get from me. Our experience with Culmer Moving was ridiculous to say the least. Everything started out good... JC, the owner, came to our home to provide an estimate. Our move was complicated, we were moving to a temporary rental and placing most of our stuff in storage. He gave us a quote and reserved us a date and time. Two days before our scheduled move, we were informed that there was no guarantee that our POD would arrive in time for Culmer Movers to load it. So I called to cancel and was told Culmer could work around it so we decided to move forward with them. On moving day, the team was friendly and seemed competent. I had requested packing services for all of our fragile items, namely my china and kitchen. We were going to be placing the boxes on site at our rental, so I asked SEVERAL times that the boxes be labeled with the contents so that I could find what I was looking for after the move. Every box was labeled "Kitchen" - NOT helpful. I have had to open EVERY box in order to find the things I need. There were several unprofessional happenings including eating our food out of our fridge without asking, emptying garbage into our mulch bed, not placing our mattresses in bags as promised during our estimate, and several broken items INCLUDING our 65 inch flat screen TV. My husband had specifically discussed the importance and value of the TV with the movers (we paid $1500 for it brand new) and requested that they take good care of it. Upon unpacking the TV, we realized that it had been packed without removing the mounting bracket and forced into the original box and packaging (which we had kept in order to safely move the TV!). All the styrofoam was broken and there was a puncture hole in the box. When we turned the TV on, there was a large black blob and black lines that ran vertically and horizontally all the way across the TV. We called JC to inform him about the broken items, particularly the TV and he agreed to come out and take a look to discuss a resolution with us. He came to our home, assessed the damage, requested that we not involve insurance, and then promised us they would take care of us and have a response to us the following week. After a week passed, we contacted JC again and asked him about resolving our claim. He sent me several text messages stating that he was exploring options for our TV including replacing it for $550 or repairing it for $350 which would not guarantee that we wouldn't have future problems. Another week passed and we reached out again. Then we received an email stating that the only broken item with any real value with the TV and that the movers were under duress because we had tried to cancel 2 days prior to the move in order to get a cheaper rate. NOT TRUE. I called to cancel due to the availability of our POD and feel that it was incredibly unprofessional to try to pass responsibility for the poorly packaged and mishandled TV onto us. Finally, Culmer Movers offered us a check for $275 if we signed a contract stating that we would not post a review about our experience. We replied, stating that this was unacceptable and requested that Culmer Movers replace our TV. We NEVER heard from him again. Incredibly unprofessional. We will NEVER use or recommend them again. We are now out a 65inch Ultra HD TV AND have no guarantee that the fragile and irreplaceable items packed in our storage unit will not be broken or damaged when we retrieve them. read more

Underquoted and overpromised. Their sub contractor sent an inexperienced team, one of which was wearing open toe sandals. They were supposed to arrive at 8:30am and arrived at 12:30pm, took twice as long as the salesperson stated that they would, and the dispatcher was nothing but rude every time we called to get an update. Great team of movers that showed up. They were on time and were extremely careful with my belongings. This is the first move I've had that nothing was broken. However... What I was not told over the phone when scheduling is that they expected $500 in cash, up front. What I was not happy about was their credit card processing fee of $25 for every $500. My CC processing fee was over $37. I was also not made aware that they charge for a minimum of 5 hours Most moves would take at least that long around town, however knowing would have been good to know. My move took right at 5 hours. I would definitely use them again, but beware of some sketchy hidden extra costs. Finding movers who don't treat your possessions like they are temp workers at the post office during holiday season is kind of rare. Most movers have shady practices with money. I wish I could rate them 1 star. I was scheduled for them to show up between 8-10am. The night before, I get a call from a person named Mike that said it will be closer to 10. In my mind, that should mean they'd be here between 9:30-10, which is fine by me. 10am rolled around and they hadn't showed up. No communication whatsoever that they would be late. I called multiple times, and got voicemail every time. It was only at 10:38 that I finally got a text message saying someone cancelled last minute and he was trying to find a replacement, so they were ill-prepared from the start. In the text message he said he would keep me updated. Another hour and a half goes by without any updates. I texted them asking for info and he said he had his guys on the way to U-Haul, which was a HUGE red flag for me. I wish I would've told him to just cancel then and there, that was the last chance I had to fix the mistake of hiring these clowns. He texted me again at almost 1pm to say they were on their way to U-Haul still and that one of the guys going there would call when they're on their way. Another half hour goes by, and I finally get a call from the team that they'll be at my house "shortly" which apparently to them can mean anywhere from a couple minutes to an HOUR. So, to recap before we go deeper, no call no show at the scheduled time, no back-ups ready if someone called off, no communication without a lot of prompting. They had no equipment beyond the truck. They didn't want to move the bed frame as 1 piece but didn't have any tools to disassemble it, so I had to get out my allen wrench to get enough bolts out (Note: They left a few of the bed frame pieces frame at the old house). They were informed up front that a refrigerator and multiple couches were going to be moving, but they didn't have a dolly. They didn't have anything to secure my nice wooden furniture to keep it from moving, let alone any blankets to shield it a little from damage (which by the way, there was plenty of that in the end) It gets worse though. The truck they showed up in was a 28 ft truck. To move all the stuff in a house. 28 ft truck. I knew as soon as I saw it we wouldn't fit everything. This is with the knowledge that it was a 2 bedroom house and we had to make a stop at a 5x10 storage unit to pick up a few more big items. All of this was communicated up front and was indicated in the reservation. So they start loading boxes without much care other than trying to stack them in the truck decently. I saw multiple boxes clearly marked "FRAGILE" that were carried one-handed. They moved stuff outside to "get it out of the way" but then forgot to put those things either in the truck or back inside before they left. They wanted to go to the storage unit after around 55% of the stuff was in the truck because they were running out of room and wanted to get the big stuff (told you a 28 footer wouldn't be enough). So we go to the storage unit and start pulling out big stuff, moving some of the stuff to the side to get in there. They fit maybe 50% of what was in the storage unit in the remaining space in the truck and had to call it there. At least this time they moved the stuff back in that they had moved into the hallway. It's about 5pm at this point when they probably could've been done already had they been here on time. After all of that, we finally made our way to my new home. I got there a few minutes before them so I could unlock the necessary doors, and was surprised to see my girlfriend get to the house before them when she was probably 10 minutes behind us after cleaning up everything they left behind. I saw them down the street asking one of my new neighbors where I was. Apparently, the GPS only got them to my street, which I'm on a dead-end street but they stopped at the intersection. However, they had unlatched the door to the truck because they thought that was the house they were going to. So as the truck pulls forward (in the dark) I hear something fall out the back. Thankfully it was just a hard case suitcase and nothing else. So here we are, a full truck to move into the house. What do I see when I look in the truck? Furniture fell over, boxes everywhere, absolute chaos. They start pulling stuff in, and it starts out somewhat organized. I had marked the boxes for what rooms to put the items in, and explained which rooms were which to help them know where to put things. I even said any boxes that didn't have markings should go to the spare bedroom. I thought that was pretty simple instruction. However, half way through I noticed they were dropping off boxes in the front room, not even attempting to take them upstairs. In the family room, they left my things all over the place. The sectional couch was in 3 different places and there was no way to get from 1 door to another in there. Absolute chaos again. This is one of the shadiest moving businesses in the industry. They showed up at 1230 after they estimated it would be between 8 and 10. They smelled like weed when they walked in. As they moved the furniture into our new house they scratched, scuffed and dented our wall and used our banister as a balance for heavy furniture which subsequently were damaged. After contacting the company for compensation we were met with unprofessional encounters and accusations. They said that we were fine with the work the movers had done the day and mentioned how much we all got along. Just because we had friendly conversations does not mean we will overlook your armature work. We were offered $10 for the lateness and a slight discount ($50) for the damage. And that was after we mentioned we smelled weed on them. That amount doesn't come anywhere close to the cost to fix the damage. After that email they went silent and we have never heard back from them. After contacting the Public Utility Commission and filing a complaint we were told this company is only still in business because they find loop holes like contracting out their work and not using their own truck(they rent UHauls). They are the worst moving company I have ever dealt with. I was supposed to move on 6/26 between 8-10 am. I thought it was strange that at 10 pm the night before the move I received a text message from Mike from the moving company asking how I was going to pay for the move. Thought the timing was strange. When I said credit card he asked me to download Venmo for payment (at 10 pm ). I had already put a $100 deposit on my credit card (5 weeks prior) to reserve my spot. The next day Saturday (the day of the move), I called at 9 am, since I never received any notice of a time frame. All I could reach was a sales person who had no clue what to do! Through the course of the next 4 hours and 9 more calls I was at my wits end. I finally reached out to Mike via text asking what was going on. His response was to have me text his secretary he was to busy on another job! Finally getting through to her was difficult so I call her. She said they don't own their own trucks they contract them out and she had been trying since 6 am the previous morning to find a truck. The do this 24 hrs before a move. She finally got back to me after 1:30 and said they could possibly get a truck to me after 5 pm that day but it was about $400 more than expected because it was last minute! Their problem not mind! In the meantime I secured another mover for 3 days later. I told the secretary to cancel it and issue a credit for my deposit. It took 2 weeks and threatening to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau to get my deposit back! I don't know how this company stays in business! The worst moving experience I've had in 25 years. The crew showed up 6 hours late and smelling like pot and booze. The customer service was awful at the call center and every time I called I had to reiterate my issue. I requested a manager call back to explain the inconvenience I experienced and to state there was damage in my home from the movers not using feet covers. The manager nor anyone who represented the business NEVER called me back or cared about my dissatisfied, unprofessional, and horrible service I received from this Company. I scheduled a move for the 16th which turned into a 3-day move because I had to pay twice. March 16, 2021, I scheduled a move to the next borough and scheduled the move between 9 AM to 12 in the afternoon. 9-12 became 12 to 3 then 3 to six. After a few calls I was told they wanted to change the date to Wednesday, which was a REAL problem because I agreed to be out of my property by the 17th. So, I had to figure out what to do with all of my stuff. After finding storage that was open at that time of night (Id waited ALL day) I called them back and asked them to take my things to a storage that I'd set up. I ended up putting it in storage and getting a room at the Marriott on the Waterfront (If your reading this Culmer YES ITS ME)! At this point, I'd spent a considerable amount of money and ended up spending two night in a hotel because they wanted me to reschedule to move my material to the new place I, which meant they wanted me to pay for a SECOND MOVE!!!! I PAID THESE SCAMMERS TWICE! called them again and told them I didn't think I should have to pay for another move. They gave me hell on that one so I left it alone and paid because I was between a rock and a hard place. I was negotiating a lot of expenses in my head and I didn't want to not be moved in. So, I paid them. They came Thursday to move me. Because of their unprofessional scheduling mismanagement, I decided it would be wise to wait outside the storage facility and watch them move my boxes etc with my daughter with my car facing the back of the truck. The AA driver/mover did his job. The caucasion mover would get the boxes in the massive truck and slam the boxes down. When I saw this the first time I was shocked. I thought maybe he had a bad morning, but this was my stuff. I was feeling the way I feel at restaurants. I'm careful to be super nice to them because I don't know what's going to happen when they go in the kitchen and I don't want to have some hair or something intentionally put in there (I've heard stories) so I am syrupy sweet. Anyway, I felt the same way with the movers. Against all, I felt I got out my car and asked could he be a lot more careful with my boxes. I actually asked the black mover because the other one looked PISSED!!! I mentioned my plates and such. I had a few friends whose entire plate sets were destroyed by ambitious or pissed-off mover. No one knew their motivation. Take your pick. So, I the black mover seemed like he was in charge so I asked and he said ok; however this particular mover continued to do this. I could have kicked myself for giving them both 50 dollar tips each on night one. To make this long story short. When the move was over 60% of my clothes "disappeared", I had to take a trip to the old apartment to look for the containers with my daughter's clothes in them, they were left at the apartment. I bubble wrapped my appliances and kitchenware doubly so, thank God, nothing was broken, but many things were not delivered. I really could not afford all of these mishaps, but I haven't received a cent back. I have receipts. THEME: DON'T USE THEIR SERVICE!!! JUST DONT unless you have money to burn. read more

I was scheduled for movers to arrive between 8-9am and they showed up at 11, they were quick in getting us loaded and our way, truck was not equipped with any moving gear! Unloaded at new location and stole my purse on their way out! Spoke to their boss and did not get a response! Asked if movers he had on my job were trustworthy and he said he only knew one of them and that they hire these guys from Craigslist, no background checks on anyone! Became a nightmare could not even move my car to unload because they have my key fob that is in my purse! Instead of unpacking I spent my rest of day dealing with credit card companies, police, owner of company and bank! My house keys and my deceased moms house keys are now in their possession! This place was horrible, they showed up late (5 hours) they couldn't unhook any of the appliances so I had to leave a lot of stuff that was still pretty new. They was short one person so it took longer than expected, then the 2 men that they sent was tired and complaining. I still have them a $60 tip to split just for actually showing up and doing the move smh. I would not recommend this place unless your desperate or only have minor things for them to move. read more

They exceeded all of my expectations. The team of guys I had (3) could not have been more professional, kind, or hard working. They hustled from the moment they got to my apartment. The whole move (everything out of 1 apartment, into a house 15 minutes away, they a few items from the house to another house another 15 minutes away) took from about 9:30 am until 5 pm. They did so well I ordered them pizza for lunch and made them sit down to take a break (which they ate quickly, cleaned up after themselves, then got right back to work). As soon as they were finished, the owner called me to review the invoice and finalize payment. I felt the cost was very fair for the amount of good, solid, hard work the 3 guys put in. Anytime I offered a hand to help, they told me to just relax - great customer service. My mom is hoping to move soon, and has already decided she will be using this company. Let me start off by saying that the men that came to move the actual stuff were great. Matt & Emmanuel were awesome. They did their job well. Our only qualm with them was that they wrapped every box and thing that they could, even though we asked them not to. There were vases and lamps valued at 10$ and they wrapped it. It ate up time and money that we didn't have. Back to the review. JC Culmer, the owner of the establishment, quoted our move at 3.5 hours and 2 men. Once the guys walked in they made the comment that it was the job of 4 men. Even they knew the estimate was a lowball. There was no contact until the day of. I emailed JC an inventory of ONLY the big items, not an exhaustive list. He must have thought it was gospel. The guys were an hour late and in the end, the total bill was double the estimate. It was no fault of the movers themselves, but of the owner. Unfortunately, we were not able to tip Matt & Emmanuel because we had stopped at the ATM already and only gotten so much cash out. If you end up working with this company, I would demand constant communication and send an exhaustive inventory of your items. Double check that the time is going to cover your move. read more

Was charged twice as much as quoted because office is incompetent when quoting a 2 bedroom apt. Lost 3 pieces of furniture due to carelessness. One, I wasn't even told about. I noticed the foot missing on an antique hope chest. It's now ruined. Very,very disappointed. This was my first experience with movers and I definitely won't be calling them.again. read more

I hired 2 movers to help me unload a moving truck into my apartment. JC was responsive and flexible. The movers were punctual. They handled my belongings carefully. Made sure to place everything in the correct rooms. When one piece of furniture didn't fit up the stairs, JC was willing to disassemble and reassemble the whole piece in order to get it to the desired room. Overall I was very satisfied and would use their services again or recommend them to a friend. read more
