This review is only on the dining experience. This was a quick find as trying to find evening seating in Portree is difficult during tourist/holiday times. We got seats and after a day out on the mountains were were very pleased to get a table. Their lentil soup was very flavorful and filling. The chicken breast was well cooked and their haggis was also flavorful. The steak au poive sauce was nice but their large amount of pepper corns was a little much. The staff was friendly and attentive. If you're able to visit the food is warming and filling. Truly a nice find.

Portree is tiny, so any hotel within the city will have you a 5-minute max walk to anywhere else in the city. Our Premiere Double room was spacious, comfortable, and very tastefully appointed. It felt luxurious and upscale with lots of visual details and amenities for us to enjoy and feel well taken care. We had a great view from our room of the bay in one direction, and the street below in another. Breakfast in the restaurant was plentiful. They brought a continental plate over for the table each morning, which included croissants, yogurt, and fruit, plus you could order from the extensive breakfast menu, which included plenty of vegetarian options. The espresso machine was broken our first morning, but the French press coffee gave me the as-strong-as-I wanted-it-to-be coffee fix I needed. There is no official parking for the hotel, so if you're lucky enough to get one of the spots directly in front of the hotel, it's kind of like winning the lottery. We found it easy to park just up the road (heading out of town) about a block away...no parking limitations allowed us to leave our car there for 2 days. (And, worst case scenario, there's a long-term paid lot [Bayfield] not too far...but we didn't have to use it.) The only quirk was in the spacious and luxurious bathroom...there's no shampoo / conditioner / shower gel /shelf in the shower. There's a small soap shelf, but putting the provided shampoo/conditioner/gel bottles on top of it...well, they wouldn't all fit there, and pressing the dispenser makes it seem like that might break if sitting on top of it...so we had to put those provided items on the floor of the shower to use them. It seems like a basic thing to have a shelf for those in the shower, or wall mounts for them, as they have in almost every other hotel we've ever been to. We loved this hotel, its location, the service, and found it perfect to explore Portree and Skye.

It's Gott two bedrooms and a single large bathroom, with a lovely livingroom and smart TV to hang out and enjoy. The only thing the Gatehouse lacked was a kitchen. But with the hotel restaurant just a few minutes down the road, it wasn't much of an issue. It's expensive, but it's a great place to stay. It's private and secluded but still feels like a wonderful party of the hotel. The Gatehouse was in wonderful shape, and the bathroom is downright incredible. It's super comfy and cozy and we adored every minute of it. It's just very expensive, so be prepared - but at the end of the day it's meant for more than two people so perhaps our perspective is skewed. The grounds are lovely, primed for a wonderful post-breakfast constitutional every morning. But what's even lovelier is the staff. Literally everyone is just cheery and happy and smiley and full of good conversation. Seriously. They took such good care of us, and were just a delight to be around. I'm so grateful for the staff here. Dinners were decent; the dining room is sort of odd. Definitely good food, but the lighting is strange. It's at once sort of dim, and also a very uncomfortable color temperature. They are at like a good 5500k and should be much closer to a 4000-4500k. I'm super sensitive to color temperature of lights, so your mileage is gonna vary here but I found that sort of odd. Anyway, breakfasts here are also just intensely awesome. Wonderful service, super fabulous dining room, and I just ate porridge and bacon the entire time because if you order the porridge they'll give you syrup and sugar and WHISKY to put it in it. It's amazing. And also genuinely delicious. And porridge is SUCH a better name for oatmeal than oatmeal. Everything's better in Scotland! Especially given that on the Isle of Skye it can be very difficult to find dinner if you've not previously made reservations or aren't in the center of Portree, it's wonderful to have a home base for your time there where you know you'll be able to get in and get food every night. And to have it be so very wonderful and delicious and served in a wonderful space by wonderful people who feel more like friends than staff? This place is amazing. I'm so grateful for it, and the people there, and it was all I wanted for my honeymoon. I'm so happy!

Nice pubby dark wood décor and seating spread over a couple of rooms. Many tables occupied on our visit. Dinner menu Scottish leaning as to be expected. It was clear from the outset that they were low on staff with our (very young) server and water coming a good bit after seating. My partner was not real hungry this evening so chose to do a bowl of the soup the day-potato & leek. This came with a wonderful, fresh roll. The roll was pronounced fantastic. We have enjoyed many an excellent bread item in Scotland and this was another example here. They know what they're doing. The soup was very tasty but after a few spoonfulls, it became "boring". My choice was a Filet of Scottish Sea Trout (yes it is different from Salmon, Google it). Served with roasted new potatoes, braised leeks, herb crusted baby carrots, and smoked mussel butter sauce. The potatoes were perfectly cooked, as were the leeks. The carrots were interesting with the herb "crust", and the mussel sauce added an umami depth to the fish. Interestingly, the sauce included a few nicely cooked, out of the shell, mussels. A succulent addition. Loved every bite. For dessert, we chose a Cinnamon Apple Tart with Caramel Whipped Cream and Vanilla Ice Cream. All of this came together for a scrumptious finale to our meal. Especially the whipped cream. Perfect portion size also. Different planning could have put us here for a longer period of time and it would have been wonderful. If you are traveling in this area, try to either stay or eat here. You won't regret it. Highly recommended.
