HOW IS THIS RATED A 4 STAR HOTEL?! TOTALLY NOT WORTH THE MONEY! Let's start with how I called to inform the desk clerk/receptionist about our arrival time to assure someone would be available (just in case) and that dinner would still be available by the time we projected our arrival (8-9 range). We were told no problem at all so we relaxed and didn't stop for dinner along the way. We arrive to a hotel that has no parking available for their guests, not even an area to pull up while you check-in. We had a lot of luggage traveling around the country for 2 weeks with no where to park! Receptionist tells us there is free parking a 5 min walk away, down a hill, over by some hostel. Are you kidding me? While I wait in our rental car parked illegally on a street, husband checks into our "cottage", their most expensive room. After getting some of our luggage to the room, husband cannot lock the door. After 20 minutes with no success, receptionist has to be called for help. She cannot lock the door either so has to wait in the cottage while husband retrieved the remainder of luggage. Now I can finally search for a parking space in town which took quite some time, especially with all the one way streets. So fun! At this point, we are so hungry and come back to our cottage to be informed by the receptionist that the restaurant is booked up for the evening!!! Why the hell were we not informed of this when I called hours earlier or she put us down with a reservation?! Not happy at all but asked her to please recommend a place we can eat and she tells us nothing in town is still serving dinner! We beg her to find a way to squeeze us in to the restaurant and she now tells us that it's closed! Regardless, it didn't matter because the lock on the front door continued to have issues and could not be locked so we couldn't leave our cottage unattended. We were trapped with no where to go because they were booked up solid with no other room to put us in. This cottage is right on a street with their bar a stone throw away from our front door, directly across the street, so anyone could walk right into our cottage and walk right out with our luggage, etc. The chef was so kind to do us a favor (sarcasm) and offer us 3 different cold cheese sandwich options and a bowl of soup which they had to deliver to our room, since we were prisoners, and then had the nerve to charge us for this "food"! Cottage was uncomfortable with very low ceilings, crappy cheap furniture, check out the photo of the couch, literally has a bar sticking out the top back that you feel while sitting on it. Floors are unbelievably slippery and the spiral staircase moves and feels like it's going to crumble as you are on it, which is the only access to your uncomfortable bed. And the water only stays hot for a quick, 5 min shower. My poor husband had to take a cold shower after mine. Receptionist warned us beforehand about this "issue". Morning comes and our only real view is a tiny one from downstairs that is shared mostly looking at a DUMPSTER. Oh, and you can hear everything on the street that literally your door opens to, your other view I forgot to mention. Again, check out the photos. Had to then retrieve our car to pack up the luggage before breakfast, so that we could eat in the restaurant. Thank god I only booked us one night in this nightmare! Oh, and the receptionist tells us she tried to find someone to come fix our lock so we could sleep peacefully but had no luck since it was the weekend. By the way, had to move furniture and put things in the doorway so we could sleep knowing if someone entered while sleeping we would hopefully hear them. After all of this, only a 10% discount on the "room charge" was offered. Charged us for our sandwiches and breakfast. This room wasn't even rentable. Why are they selling this horrible space??!! And for $300/night. We have asked for a full refund and I will update based on the results. We booked this through American Express Platinum travel, ummmm, how did this hotel get out on their site?! Good luck if you choose to stay here!

I made reservations several weeks before as I was not sure of Friday openings. We enjoyed our meal. It was all good. Check out my pics!

Cuillan Hills Hotel - Rusty Nail

The Cuillin Hills Hotel in Portree is one of the nicest hotel experiences we've had in a long time…read more Portree is a quaint little town on the Isle of Skye on the west coast of Scotland. It's some of the most beautiful scenery we've seen. The hotel is as comfortable as you will find in a luxury hotel. The bar and restaurant features stunning views of Portree Bay and the Cuillin mountains. Gary our bartender was a wizard whipping up a number of signature and classic cocktails. He was so friendly and generous to share all kinds of local knowledge about the cocktail/scotch scene in the area. The Talisker distillery is only a few miles away. I had no idea Drambuie was created and marketed in Isle of Skye. It actually says it on the bottle which Gary showed us (photo #10). It makes sense it was created and made in Scotland being a scotch-based liqueur. Of course I had to order a Rusty Nail (photo #3) which Gary was excited I even knew about the very old school cocktail. A Rusty Nail is simply 2 oz. Scotch and 3/4 oz. Drambuie served with a lemon garnish. Its origin dates back to the 1930's and made popular by the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr.) in the 1960's. If you like scotch you'll love a Rusty Nail. Give it a go!! The bar has a "Malt Embassy" with over 130 whiskies (photo #4 & 9). Whatever kind of scotch you're into they have it. The flights are a lot of fun so you can easily taste a wide variety of local whiskies. The design of the hotel is as beautiful as the surrounding landscape. The lounge areas are stunning and very comfortable. What's better than having a lovely local scotch in front of the fire with your beautiful wife celebrating your 25th wedding anniversary (photo #5)? If you ever visit Scotland, Isle of Skye is a must. We highly recommend Portree and the Cuillin Hills Hotel. You need to get there. Salute

We had two excellent bartenders who gave us lots of advice and remembered us throughout our stay. There is a comfortable lounge with a live fire. If I have one suggestion, it is to host a wine and cheese night in the lounge for an hour or so each night. This would be the only way I could think to improve the hotel. The view from the hotel is gorgeous with a perfect scene of the colorful Portree houses. Location is great, about 15 minutes drive from Old Man of Storr. Breakfast is included and very well done. The yogurt had a delicious compote. My husband enjoyed his Scottish breakfast with haggis, blood pudding, and a potato scone. I loved my Eggs Royale with perfectly crispy English muffins topped with smoked salmon and hollandaise. We had dinner at Dulse & Brose one night and we were able to walk there within about 10 minutes, which was appreciated after so much time spent in the car. They offer a variety of complimentary toiletries and others for a small fee, such as a hair straightener, which I thought was thoughtful. They also offer complimentary still and sparkling water, biscuits, tea, coffee, and fruit. We loved that the TV could be easily connected to our phones and stream our shows after a long day exploring the Highlands. The bed was very large and comfortable, although the room itself was relatively small. There was a towel heating rack in the bathroom.

The hotel staff was lovely and helpful. We were smart enough to have made a dinner reservation before our arrival for our one night stay. Nice pubby dark wood décor and seating spread over a couple of rooms. Many tables occupied on our visit. Dinner menu Scottish leaning as to be expected. It was clear from the outset that they were low on staff with our (very young) server and water coming a good bit after seating. My partner was not real hungry this evening so chose to do a bowl of the soup the day-potato & leek. This came with a wonderful, fresh roll. The roll was pronounced fantastic. We have enjoyed many an excellent bread item in Scotland and this was another example here. They know what they're doing. The soup was very tasty but after a few spoonfulls, it became "boring". My choice was a Filet of Scottish Sea Trout (yes it is different from Salmon, Google it). Served with roasted new potatoes, braised leeks, herb crusted baby carrots, and smoked mussel butter sauce. The potatoes were perfectly cooked, as were the leeks. The carrots were interesting with the herb "crust", and the mussel sauce added an umami depth to the fish. Interestingly, the sauce included a few nicely cooked, out of the shell, mussels. A succulent addition. Loved every bite. For dessert, we chose a Cinnamon Apple Tart with Caramel Whipped Cream and Vanilla Ice Cream. All of this came together for a scrumptious finale to our meal. Especially the whipped cream. Perfect portion size also. Different planning could have put us here for a longer period of time and it would have been wonderful. If you are traveling in this area, try to either stay or eat here. You won't regret it. Highly recommended.
