Charlie and Sheldon a few days before Charlies death

My wife and I never thought we'd reach a point where we would be writing this. After defending Cudahy Vet from other reviews/complaints on social media for the past few years, it is with a heavy heart that we write this after a 7 year relationship with Dr. Bob Shampo. Their Clinic and services have unquestionably descended over the course of the past year. This is not limited to one bad experience, but several, including the death of our 5 month old English Bulldog puppy, Charlie, that passed during a spay procedure. Frustration set in around June of 2020. Our male St. Bernard, Sheldon, was having chronic diarrhea. We called Dr. Bob. His staff suggested "It's probably just the heat". We knew that was not the case. After a few more weeks of no change, we called again. This time, his staff suggested, "He's probably drinking too much water". We also knew this was not the case. A few more weeks passed by with no change, we called again. This time, it was Dr. Bob himself that suggested "He must have gotten into something in the yard". After hearing makeshift excuses, we expressed our frustration and told them we need answers. Before they could get him in for an exam, we had to rush Sheldon to the ER for excessive vomiting. Long story short, after tests and ultrasounds, Sheldon had Pancreas issues and was severely anemic. In all the time Cudahy Vet wasted by giving us unjustifiable excuses, Sheldon went through several months of diarrhea, being lethargic and experienced a 25-pound weight loss. I don't think Sheldon would be with us today if we didn't get him to the ER. In the midst of what I just described, we scheduled our 5 month old female English Bulldog puppy, (Charlie) to be spayed by Dr. Bob. Charlie was a happy and healthy puppy. We dropped Charlie off at 8am on July 8thof 2020. Less than 3 hours later, we received a call stating that Charlie had passed away after surgery(during recovery). Our first question was 'How, how did this happen'. Dr. Bobs response to what happened..."I don't know". They proceeded to blame it on the breed itself, stating that with brachycephalic breeds, there is a higher risk of putting them under. This is only true when the proper precautions are not taken. In contrast to other breeds, bulldogs under anesthesia CAN NOT maintain passive respiration, so to maintain airway patency, they require active compensatory hyperactivity of their upper airway respiratory muscles, meaning, they need pre and post-surgery oxygenation. If these steps are not taken, they can not breathe on their own and they will virtually 'suffocate' to death. To blame this untimely death on her breed, is just reckless. Bulldogs are put under anesthesia every day. As a matter of fact, less than 1% of dogs die under anesthesia every year. It just doesn't happen. It is also strongly recommended that an anesthesiologist is on staff with Bulldogs due to the level of care that is required. There was no anesthesiologist on staff. Nothing but vet techs. Charlie did not receive the level of care that is required for a bulldog. And because of that, she is not with us today. While they did pay for Charlie's cremation, that was after they billed us $900 for her spaying, including a $20 nail trim fee they did during her spay. They couldn't even leave out the darn nail trim fee from a surgery that resulted in her death. These issues do not end here, and if I had more characters to work with in this review, I'd go much further into detail on other issues, such as inadequate exams, product pushing and downplaying symptoms. This past year we have experienced nothing but headaches with Cudahy Vet. They claim that they are a full-fledged animal hospital who has the most advanced technology, which they will defend all day long. But that could not be further from the truth. They mislead their level of services. They conduct their surgeries in a windowless basement, and if you have a large dog that does not do stairs, prepare yourself to have to carry them up and down if they need x-rays or a procedure. This clinic is not equipped for large animals, among other things. Like others, we thought they were great too. Until they weren't.

Four months ago, when our dog Willow became sick with diarrhea and vomiting, Dr. Ragoschke was kind enough to explain her test results and answer my many questions. I felt good about my experience with her and believed that my husband and I had found a great clinic in Milwaukee. But the supporting staff leaves a lot to be desired. When the antibiotic Willow was prescribed resulted in constipation, I called to find out how to proceed. The tech I spoke to told me that constipation for several days is normal BUT that we should stop the antibiotic. Since the doctor hadn't warned us that constipation was a possible side effect that would warrant our stopping the antibiotic, I asked some additional questions. The tech struggled to answer them, growing exasperated. I then asked if she meant we should temporarily stop the antibiotic or if this would be a permanent cessation of the med. She condescendingly said, "Use your judgment" as though anyone with half a brain would know what to do. I explained that my husband and I pay hundreds of dollars for the professional advice of trained veterinarians because we love our dog and don't want to "guess" what to do. The tech repeated that we should stop the antibiotic and use our discretion on whether to continue it later. "When is 'later'?" I asked. She sighed, making it painfully clear that she didn't want to discuss it. She apparently didn't know the answer and didn't care enough to find out what it was. I told her I would be more comfortable speaking directly to the doctor. She insisted she had told me all I needed to know. I repeated that I would like to speak with the vet. She then snapped that someone would call us Monday and HUNG UP ON ME! My brother was sitting next to me and heard this entire exchange, including the click of her phone. We looked at each other with our mouths agape, shocked that someone in the position of protecting the health and welfare of people's pets could be so dismissive and rude. Monday came and went without a call. Since it was getting late, my husband called Community Vet (CV) himself, putting his phone on speaker so that I could hear as well. When he mentioned that we'd been waiting for their call, a defensive woman said they had called us earlier that day. (Our phone histories and the lack of a voicemail said otherwise.) This woman was just as rude, condescending and dismissive as the woman I had spoken to on Friday, ranting about how we had refused medication the vet had prescribed and how I had refused the advice of the tech. My husband repeatedly tried asking one question but she kept talking over him, so I finally interrupted and said, "We never 'refused medication'; we explained at checkout that we already had the probiotic at home. And I didn't 'refuse' the advice of the tech; I was trying to get clarification on HOW to proceed and she couldn't tell me. We're now again trying to get an answer to one question but you're not letting us speak." She snapped, "I'm speaking to your husband, not you!" I replied, "You're speaking AT my husband, not TO him, and he's standing here rolling his eyes because you won't let him get a word in!" She, too, hung up on us. My husband and I looked at each other. "Can you believe this?" I asked. He just kept shaking his head and saying, "Wow." I should've written this review then but because of the wonderful vets, we decided to stay with the clinic, hoping to avoid the rude staff members. Fast-forward to a couple of days ago when we took Willow to urgent care where she was treated for roundworm. Since she needs to be seen in 4 weeks by our regular vet to make sure she's ok, I called CV yesterday to make the appointment. A staff member named Alex answered the phone and--after pulling our account--explained that CV can no longer see us. "Huh?" "There's a note on your account." "What?" "Yeah, it's been there for months." "What? Why weren't we told? There's never been a phone call, letter, email, nothing!" Alex apologized but he couldn't change it. Community Vet's logo is: "We consider your pet's health our first concern." Really? CV staff decided that we're no longer welcome but didn't have the decency to tell us so that we could find a new vet for our sweet little rescue dog. Instead they waited until she became sick and in need of care to let us know. It's gross. After many calls, the earliest we can get in with a new vet is in two months. Clearly, our pet's health is of no concern to CV. It seems the staff is more concerned with spite, no matter the cost to our little dog. The negative reviews here almost entirely point to CV's supporting staff, a pattern. CV may have great vets but all it takes is a couple of rude, spiteful employees to endanger the life of your beloved pet. If you care about your pet's health, avoid Community Vet.

Upon arrival the lobby appeared clean, front desk staff was attentive and greeted us by name at the desk! We waited maybe 2 minutes before being escorted to our private exam room for the appointment. The appointment went fairly fast, they listened to our reasons for bringing our cat in to be examined, collected his vitals, and prescribed us with a medication to try for his symptoms. No extra tests, no BS! The Veterinarian and Vet Tech were very friendly and gentle with our cat. They were knowledgeable on his body language signs, and mindful of how nervous he was. They had treats on hand and dealt with our cat's polite stubbornness with grace! The whole interaction, she kept on saying how it was such a pain in the ass. This phrase was repeated multiple times by her. After dropping him off and waiting for 2 hours I got the text that he was ready. I headed in right then and the first thing she says to me was 'you've got to be kidding me'. She said he didn't do great, especially around his face, which I thought was completely normal especially for a puppy. Once I paid and had my dog we left. He was extremely skiddish and seemed totally different. It also looks like he only got his face, paws, and behind cleaned up. Even though we paid for a full haircut. After searching for 15 mins, I finally found a worker to help me. I asked for a fish. He didn't ask what fish, what for, or anything. Immediately started questioning my tank and choices. To be honest, I didn't answer all of his questions. I just wanted one freaking feeder fish! He then told me I would kill my fish and that he felt comfortable saying that because I looked like an adult who wouldn't cry. He had no idea what I was getting a $.30 fish for. Little did he know, he was a feeder fish for a turtle. So instead of buying a new set up for a fish I had at home, I unpacked my cart and left. Absolute terrible service. To top it all off, the fish tanks there had multiple dead fish in them and extremely dirty. I typically go to the location to get food for my bearded dragon, dog and cat- however, I won't be returning. Too many bad experiences with this one being the worst

There are two big variables for veterinary clinics. The tough one is how are they with farewell time. I so wish I could have put one of these veterinarians in charge of my father's end of life care. I've had to say good bye to two of my best friends after long mostly very good lives and they were empathetic, compassionate, and kind. Now I've got two more elderly cats and once again I'm approaching the sad part of the circle of life. All vets are qualified, the DVM is one of the hardest doctorates to earn. A bigger variable are staff, and the staff here is the very best in the game. Actually there's a dog named Lucy working here who isn't very competent, but she's cute so she gets away with it. The human staff is just outstanding. Yes, the prices are kind of steep, but you do get what pay for and I really have never been to a pet clinic that is cheap. I think I should mention that none of my 6 cats would agree with this YELP review, but since they are cats, they really don't like any veterinary clinics. Plus they always end up here after I lie to them (I tell them we're going to get hamsters), so they start out disappointed. I think the place smells pretty clean but to cats I guess it smells like abject fear.

I took my cat in recently, to be evaluated, and I appreciated the kindness the staff had with performing basic health tasks, even with requiring a little restraint of the animal in order to get the most accurate results. I also appreciated the fact that the staff wrapped my cat in a towel when taking him to another room for blood tests (which I hadn't seen enough from other vets, from my experience, and I think was what made the cat stay calm and even trust them enough to rub against their scrubs, afterwards (and I hadn't seen the cat do that to anyone (or even anything) in at least a couple days prior to the checkup)) However, even though the staff were kind, tactful, gentle, and even very knowledgeable, of course, I kind of wished I maybe would've been asked more specific questions about what I had been noticing from the cat. Of course, I could've google searched more detailed information about what conditions/diseases felines could have from certain symptoms (and I do regret not having done enough research, myself, sooner), but given that I didn't realize until less than 24 hours before my cat passed that having strong breathe/body odors was likely a sign of kidney failure/disease (and I didn't learn that from the vet's office), I kind of wished the main vet, I spoke with, asked if my cat was starting to have really stinky breathe/bodily odors (especially given that she was wearing a mask, which I'm glad she was, but would also mean she likely wouldn't have noticed an unusual smell, herself, when doing the checkup/tests). And even though my cat did have blood pressure levels close to early diabetes levels and he was drinking/urinating excessively, I can see why the vet seemed to be more concerned about diabetes/hyperthyroidism. However, I kind of also wished the vet would've brought up information about potential other conditions (especially common ones) and the symptoms of those, even if they maybe didn't seem relevant to what my pet had (just to give me an idea of what to look out for and to make me more confident in choosing the most beneficial food for the cat (especially given that I had just gotten back from an international trip the week before (which I hardly ever do) and thus, couldn't really afford to do more tests other than the checkup fee/blood tests (and was, therefore, also, just trying to pick out wet cat foods, myself, with certain ingredients to try to help my cat out, at least temporarily))). Similarly, there was one point when I was talking to the vet about the cat's loss of appetite/potential nausea, and how I was also trying to stay on a strict budget, and she said she could administer liquids to at least help him temporarily, but then either she or another vet I eventually talked to for a bit, as well (I couldn't exactly remember who said it) eventually told me that that was the anti-nausea vaccine (which only costed just less than $50 but I was already paying at least $300 for the checkup fee, blood tests, and a couple appetite enhancement-like tablets). However, because I heard that response after asking a couple other questions first, I couldn't tell if maybe I misunderstood them at first, both vets (or maybe just one of them) had different things in mind with each (or maybe at different times), or what, but I just kind of felt there was also a little bit of confusion there. One final con: I didn't realize that there was a stupid technician fee seeming to cost more than just the general anti-nausea vaccine, itself, associated with getting the anti-nausea vaccine on a separate appointment. I realize vets are often terribly underpaid and medical equipment/resources costs (no matter what species they're for, lol) can be crazy expensive, but I couldn't afford to come back in the day after (and what also happened to be the day before my cat passed) all because of that stupid technician fee. I also realize a lot of vet centers, unfortunately, have fees like that, but given that my credit cards were all declining (even though the balance on a couple of them still seemed far from the limit) and I only had just less than $70 in my checking account, if I only had to pay for the ~$47 anti-nausea vaccine, I probably would've come in to get that for my feline (but then again, given how dramatic and rapid my cat's health seemed to decline in just 2-3 days, he maybe wouldn't have lived much longer after the vaccine, anyway). But even though my visit had an equal number of pros and cons, I would still maybe recommend the center having more signs in the rooms or at least more information sheets available about pet health (what to be observant of with your pet, the symptoms of especially common conditions/diseases, maybe how nonprofessional veterinary pet owners can differentiate disease signs, food type/liquid frequency for health, etc.)
