Located relatively close to Franklin BBQ, it must be a sign that good eats are in this area lol - and in a neat little food truck park with a couple other vendors. These folks are serving on some amaaaazing traditional Mexican street tacos. Sized for about 2 bites for each taco, you get the opportunity to try an assortment of tacos/meats. The sign near the truck says that a normal meal might consist of 5-7 tacos, but I opted to go with 4 and see how I felt after. Three years later and much well-deserved recognition later, still serving amazing tacos. Fantastic tacos in a shaded food truck park. As a first timer, I ordered one of each of the six tacos types. My favorites were the suadero (shredded brisket), cachete (beef cheek), and bunch (pig stomach). If the last one hits you funny, swap in a carnitas. In Hawaii, I am a Haole. When trying to decide what to order at Cuantos Tacos, I felt like a Gringa. The good news is that I embrace my lack of knowledge, and dive in. Rather than ask the nice young man in the food truck what the various tacos were, I asked him what his favorite tacos were. I also asked how many would be filling for the average person. I ordered five street tacos- three of his first favorite, and two of his second favorite. They were delicious! Here is some terminology in case you too are unfamiliar: NIXTAMAL - this is flour created by soaking corn in lime water. It helps to release the nutritional value of the corn- niacin, calcium, and amino acids- so your body can more easily absorb them. Cool, huh? SUADERO is a thin, flat cut of beef taken from the area between the belly and the leg, or the flank area CACHETE in Spanish can refer to a cheek (as in the side of the face) or a bottom (especially in the Southern Cone region) In Mexican cuisine, BUCHE is the Spanish word for pig stomach CARNITAS are traditionally made with pork. Specifically, cuts like pork shoulder (also known as pork butt), or other fatty pork cuts are commonly used. LONGANIZA is typically a pork sausage. It is generally high in protein, low in fat. CHAMPIOÑES are mushrooms. I hope all that is helpful. The food was very flavorful, prices reasonable, and the service was polite and expedient. Here are the two negatives: the picnic table seating area was...disgusting. I'm not a germaphobe, but I recommend bringing some disinfectant wipes...or a table cloth to make it fancy. Being used to the Houston taco scene, I thought that Cuantos was okay, which was a pity because I had high hopes. The tacos are $2.75 each and I tried the brisket, beef cheek, pork stomach, and mushrooms in adobo. I really enjoyed the mushrooms, the sauce was great and the mushrooms were tender. My next favorite was probably the beef cheek, it was tender and fell right apart. However, I thought it was a bit too oily both the brisket and beef cheek. Located in a cute little food truck park, you can tell Cuantos Tacos is a popular option with the way they had a line practically the whole time we were there. I love that they specify what each type of meat is on their menu. And that they have a vegetarian option! And the prices looked pretty decent... until I saw how small the tacos were. I wasn't too hungry, but I was able to finish three easily. And their menu states that around 5-8 is recommended to satisfy you for a meal. They do give a hefty portion of meat within the tacos and the tortillas are delicious. But all of my and my friends sauces were all congealed, which was a little off putting. Had to try this spot out as it is Michelin Bib Gourmand Service was super fast and I loved the location of it being surrounded by other food trucks and outdoor seating arrangements. I thought the tacos were good but nothing like crazy. I got one of each, and my favorite was the longaniza (chorizo). I love simple food done extraordinarily well. Cuantos Tacos are no frills, simple, onion/cilantro/lime with delicious meat/mushrooms and fresh tortillas. I've eaten so many tacos over the years, but these tacos feel like the ones your grandmother helped cook for a big family meal during the holidays. Comfort food without being too rich, hearty without being too heavy. The flavor in these tacos and the tenderness of this meat is amazing. We got the sampler platter, and my son (who is not a big fan of onions and cilantro) legit stuffed 2 of these tacos into his mouth within 2 minutes. Chorizo and Barbacoa were the first to go, so we had to go get another sampler. I have no regrets, because those two tacos were some of the best on the plate. My husband, who does not sure not vegan/vegetarian dishes, really enjoyed the mushroom taco. The beef stomach taco was tender and delicious, and the carnitas taco was scrumptious and not greasy one bit. Yes, beef stomach. I did not care or even pause when I ate it. The menu is straightforward and the prices are very reasonable about $3 each. We ordered 8 tacos ranging from carnitas to buche. They were out of chorizo when we got there, but that's fine. Their unique feature is using 100% Nixtamal tortillas which is corn processed through a Mesoamérica technique. They take credit or debit so that was helpful as a lot of places are cashless in Austin. There are wooden park tables and benches to sit and eat. Very picnic vibes. We waited for our number to be called and got our food and plenty of napkins. Bring wet wipes with you if you plan on eating there as your hands will get messy. The tacos were loaded with meat, onions, and cilantro. It came with sliced limes and a red and green salsa. The red salsa had a little heat, but nothing overwhelming. The green salsa was very mild and added a bright flavor to the rich meats. The tortilla was toasty and chewy which held up very well to loaded taco fillings. I had 2 tacos and was very full. My friend had 5 out of 6 tacos and was stuffed. Probably the yummiest taco spot in Austin based on pure taste. I like all of the flavors and different types of tacos, but I also don't think they sell much outside of tacos. We came on a weekday lunch which meant that there was barely a line and we were able to order super swiftly. Then they call out your number and you pick up your food. Really straightforward. My only knock is that this is a food truck so what you're gonna get for seating options are these public benches that birds poop on which is kinda gross. But you probably would already know that rolling into the place, maybe taking it home is a better option. I think the tacos are good but a bit overpriced for their sizes. I've been to other taco places with bigger tacos and honestly, the flavors here don't stand out. I wouldn't go out of my way to get tacos here, but it's a good experience to try a Bib Gourmand taco food truck. We got one of each taco flavor. When the tacos arrived, we didn't know which was which. My favorite was the one with beef, which I'm guessing is the Suadero. I wouldn't get the Champiñones again just because I prefer having meat in my tacos. This was the one with mushrooms. Carnitas is a bit dry. The tacos are REALLY small, smaller than my hand. This is located in a a food truck park with plenty of picnic tables for you to enjoy your food in the middle of everything. :) We came for lunch and some people had brought cards/were hanging out in large groups with friends. I've been in Austin for years - and have had quite a few tacos and was skeptical at first....how good could they truly be? ....the answer - EXCELLENT. We ordered the plate that had one of each taco, and they were all very good and full of flavor. The Suaderò was my favorite. They are on the greasier side - but no complaints here. We all were blown away by the tacos and my gf's brother ended up ordering a few more. It's located in the Arbor food park - and there are a few other trucks to check out while there. I paired this with a smoothie. There's plenty of seating out there and the line moves fast. Parking can get a little crowded in the small lot connected to the park but not too bad. WOW!!! that's really the only thing I could say, it took me a while to get my thoughts together to write this review. For a little food truck this place is putting out some real quality food! The tacos are absolutely delicious quite honestly probably the best thing I ate the entire week I was in Austin, Texas. Hands down the best tacos I've tried in Austin! Everything was delicious. The torta, street tacos, and quesadilla were amazing. I do have to say I wasn't a fan of the red salsa- the flavor was just too smoky for me. The mushrooms are also braised in this salsa, so that is why the mushroom tacos also weren't my favorite. I would really recommend the beef cheek and brisket tacos though- both are absolutely amazing bites. I don't eat pork, so I didn't try any of the pork options, but I'm sure they're great too!
