Christmas Tree Shops - Lots of cute gift ideas to choose from...

    Christmas Tree Shops

    (9 reviews)

Not exactly the North Pole or a bygone era postcard from the Currier and Ives collection (unless…read moreboth have been relocated near Shanghai) but the Christmas Tree Shop never fails to motivate the acquisition of one or two extra baubles for my extremely crowded artificial tree. This year it's a set of unadorned glass ornaments as my present stash seems to be nothing more than a travelogue of Christmas Past... really tired of the Walt Disney World Ornament set from 2002 and where in the world did that Wawa ornament come from... I think I'll steer clear of the four foot Elf on the Shelf with the especially Satanic looking illuminated head and the plastic lobster bib adorned with Santa's chubby visage. Every year I visit pretending to "just browse" and every year they crowbar my wallet in the true spirit of the season. Christmas greetings from Shanghai. Five oscillating LED stars.

We were young, decorating our first homes, had limited income, and the items and their prices were too good to pass up! While the name says Christmas, the store has items for the house that are not holiday themed. Think of it as a Bed, Bath & Beyond merges with a Dollar store and produces a store somewhere in between. On a recent trip home to NJ, I was super excited to see that a Christmas Tree shop had opened in my old neighborhood. But my excitement turned to disappointment as soon as I entered the store. Everything was in a disarray and was random, no sense of order and logic. Had my memory failed me? Was it always like this but because of where I was at that point in my life, I didn't notice? Say it isn't true! I loved The Christmas Tree shops and still have a pasta set I bought, white with a pattern of black olives and green leaves. This day a huge crate of Santa's, penguins and reindeer greeted one upon entering; they were cute. They still sell lots of note cards and thank-you notes for a buck or two. However the Christmas Cards were priced the same as other stores. Still have lots of tea and a random assortment of food products, like a ginormous canister of cheese curls, but nothing I would buy. Left without buying anything and most likely won't stop in again. It wasn't the price range because I love a good Dollar Store. The content within the store just had no appeal for me.

Norman's Hallmark Shop - Fantastic Old Tyme Shoppe: Norman's Hallmark Store

    Norman's Hallmark Shop

It…read moreis a Hallmark type card shop but they sell all sorts of trinkets, gifts, kids toys, candles, boxes, books, pens, table and arts supplies, wrapping paper, home decor and lots more. Christmas time was really the best time to come, but really any time for home arts, decor, mail and gifts! The service was a bit humdrum. Clerks were standing around behind multiple check out counters.. but they were friendly and helpful. The old guy who worked here asked me how I did: "Did you find everything alright?" which I thought very genial and I know plenty of stores that make Billions each month, where not a soul cares what you are looking for. That was nice. Norman's is squeezed in between some Italian Salumeria shops and sports stores and is not the easiest to find. It's roomy inside though and definitely some locals come for the lore and daily dose of gossip. It is a bright and very well run establishment that had everything I was looking for and more. (The snob with 1-star review below mine - you know, loser 'Andy' with barely 20 reviews - is the reason you come in and make a purchase in person, when the need arises. Hallmarks isn't Amazon!) Excellent old-timey-esque card, thrift, gift, pens, arts and crafts shoppe. Review: 5 star fun! Keeping Hallmark on the map

This place has the worst customer service of any establishment that I've ever been to or called…read more Basically, we needed an incredibly important, incredibly sentimental gift for Christmas (the supposed thing that Hallmark prides itself on selling). I called and asked that they put one aside for me. They said they did. I called the next morning and they'd sold it to someone else. I will never shop at Hallmark anywhere for any reason ever again; I hope my family will never shop at Hallmark anywhere for any reason ever again; I will do my best to ensure that my friends and their family never shop at Hallmark anywhere for any reason ever again.

The space was pretty big and sight lines & sound were really good. One big downside is that they list, but don't link to / sell tickets for their events online. I called the week of the show to ask @ tickets and the woman who answered didn't know about the show & had to check. She came back & told me when the doors opened & when the music started but when I got there I saw a sign saying "SOLD OUT" - no tix unless you had already them or were on the Guest List. Super lame & had I not snuck in I would have been super bummed after driving an hour & 45 minutes to see this show!

Pino's is a wine shop, lounge, and music venue which host events like cleaningoutchacloset. It definitely gives chill vibes and casual. A place where people can come hang and have a pizza and beer. It was definitely a vibe being able to thrift and find some cool items and then chill out in Pino's for a few. Definitely check out their instagram to see what other events they host at their establishment. You might get to experience the thrift market like I did the two times I went. I found a few pretty cool items like a Denim & Co vintage fleeced line Jean Jacket which is super cute! Can't wait to see what else Pino's got going on in the future.

All the items, both those that are antique or vintage, and those that are recent, are aesthetically consistent. I guess the best way to describe this shop's aesthetic is "primitive" or "country." Everything falls into that primitive/country category, and it all works together. There are old metal tins from various products; baskets, spatterware and plain enameled bowls, spoons, plates, and coffeepots; character food jars that were made to become piggy banks after they were emptied; baskets, stoneware jugs, some china, a coffee grinder. It's a little hard to find HappiNest from Route 22, because the building is set back from the road. They're on the Westbound side of Route 22, just east of the traffic light at Route 523 / Main St. HappiNest is also accessible from Old Route 28, just before it ends at Route 22. They're only open Thursdays through Saturdays, from noon to 6:00 p.m. But it's worth a visit during their open hours if primitive / country is your thing, or even just to see a shop that is well-put-together.
