I'm not entirely sure where exactly 'The Public' sits. There's a surprising amount of turnover on the miller street strip, with restaurants changing hands far too often. As you first enter you find yourself deliberating - is it a pub? Is it a vegan joint? Maybe it's a bar for ladies? Turns out it's a Greek food inspired taverna/restaurant - still not sure what the honeycomb feature wall and vegetation growing out of odd places has to do with this theme, but luckily the whole thing is appealing to the eye - despite being a little discombobulating (I've finally found a use for that word!) The lightly polished timber and white walls gives it a really nice 'air' - it's a terrific space, and with the turquoise colour blended in, you find yourself in the mood for salad, or fresh juice, or avocado - something light. However the menu is heavy on the beers, meats, burgers, sausages and cheeses - of which I truly love, but wasn't expecting. Unfortunately the food was disappointing. The tastiest item was the grilled cheese - I guess that's saying something? We ordered a plethora of entrees and share plates, none of which were memorable unfortunately, except the grilled cheese! The burgers were the biggest cause of upset though. I ordered the pulled lamb burger with grilled haloumi and hommus - it sounded delicious, but really failed to deliver. The lamb was dull, the haloumi was borderline tasteless (not sure how they managed that) - the whole thing was just a bit of a miss. I'd suggest Turkish bread as well - the brioche buns are too heavy for this style of burger. I really wanted to like this place, but sadly with so many excellent options around I can't see myself coming back for more.

There's stool seats under high tables and self-serve areas at the front, "to encourage socialisation," James told me the other day. Seats and a small raised area suitable for small gatherings at the rear (Public takes corporate bookings). A strong Greek-fusion theme runs through the menu, which ensures the brothers won't cannibalise the Spanish-inspired Ms Miller a few doors down. Lamb meatballs, taramasalata and other Mediterranean delicacies adorn the menu. There's a capable selection of beers drawn from the same distributor who supplies Cotton Thief about 7 minutes away in Cremorne, but TBF Cammeray Craft 30 seconds north on foot on the other side of the street does small brews better. Hopefully the Public will open a few taps to boutique beer makers on rotation. A thing that made the old Belgian so great was you could retire to it when you missed your bus (the stop is right outside). Ever since it closed more than a year ago I've had to be on time to appointments - but not any more! "Oh, dash it, I missed the bus! Oh, well, nothing for it but to get a brew, pull up a stool at the window and watch the people shoot past for 15 minutes until the next bus." Weekends put a new spin on the term 'pub crawl' as hipsters and late-blooming gen xers prove that having young kids in tow is no excuse to crimp your social life. Just watch out for those three-wheeler baby joggers, they're killers on the ankles as you filter past with a tray of schooners.

(I upload some Photos) Thanks to the live jazz music it was also a very romantic evening for me and my girlfriend. We really loved the music being played. The staff was super friendly and tried very hard to give us a seat for dining, after we finished our drinks and wanted to eat something on normal chairs (otherwise I get some problems with my back). Sometimes it felt like the staff was a bit confused, but that doesn't matter to me, since they really give their best and I appreciated that a lot. I loved that evening and will now come to this place often. Also: they have 2 more private rooms, which can be used by paying a little little more, great for nice evenings with your lover or your friends.

I had seen Barry's review, and conducted some research of my own. From what I gather, this place is new-ish and not very well known, but those who have been there seem to love it. I suspect quite a few of the reviews I saw were posted by an owner/manager/affiliate, but there were some genuine reviews and some raving blog posts. I walked down the steps and was quite impressed by the décor and lay out. One side of the stairwell is lined with fake vines leading to a large open dining area with good sized booths on one side and plenty of tables in the middle. My immediate thought was that someone had put a lot of time and thought into this place. And it shows. The bar it self is lit beautifully with some funky bar stools for seating and a few high bar tables. I was surprised to hear live music as I entered, as I had thought they saved that for Friday and Saturday nights. Music is jazzy, singer had a beautiful voice and was friendly and interactive (she thanked us when we clapped after one song). There was a bit of confusion over beverages, mostly caused by my beer snobbery (I'll have a Peroni, but only if it's imported. The Aus stuff isn't nearly as good. Yes, there's a difference, and it's a big one.) (1912 has the real thing if you're wondering.) The menu is Japanese fusion with tons of variety and reasonable prices. We had some spring rolls to start, which were served with a chili mayo sauce. I probably would have preferred a liquid dipping sauce, but that's a personal preference. They were good either way. For mains we enjoyed the Pork Tonkatsu (a very generous serve of 2 fillets and some cabbage slaw with a peanut-sesame dressing for $21). The pork was nicely fried and juicy and I can't fault the sauce. The dressing reminded me of one I used to buy in Canada that I can't find here, but is absolutely delicious. The Wafu Salmon Fillet ($25) was also wonderful and cooked to perfection (I can't stand dry over cooked fish). The Pork Belly was good, but a bit oily for my liking. Obviously it's a fatty cut of meat, but it felt as if they had drizzled olive oil over the top of the pork. The korokke sides were beautiful. On the server's suggestion we shared two sides. Both the green salad and the baby potato at $5/each were delicious (although probably not necessary - the size of the mains would have been adequate). Service was friendly and professional but a bit inconsistent. On one hand, the servers were eager to take away my plate after I finished my main - to the point where they offered to bring me a clean, smaller, plate if I wanted to continue picking at the sides; but on the other hand, when the drink order for the 2 new arrivals was taken, the first person wasn't offered another round despite having finished their first, and I don't think we would have received a second round if we hadn't requested it during a plate-clearing. Sadly as one of our party had to leave pretty quickly I didn't get to try the Spicy Ice Cream dessert (homemade chilli and wasabi flavoured ice cream for $8), but I have no problem heading back another time to give it a try. The person behind the bar also tried to tell me that there was 10% off the bill when I ordered - which was wrong as anyone can take 10% off in their head without much mental agility. Anyway. So after all that and her walking off to find out if a drink was included, something she said to me, and then coming back to say no sorry - no discount and no drink. She took the order. We then got 3 roast dinners that were stone cold. We returned them to a 'oh sorry i guess' kind of attitude. We then had them brought back to us - the same food on the same plates - supposedly reheated. First of all we should have been given fresh plates and new food... but worst of all they were still cold?!?! What had been done to them? What chef in their right mind sends the same plates out again- and still cold?? This is potentially the worst dining experience experience I've had in my life in Sydney ... and it was a special occasion for us. Well done for ruining it.
