On Fridays, get here by 5:00 or 5:15 PM or be prepared to wait. The selection on the menu is broad: a bunch of different fish selections are available but none are all you can eat (probably for the better). I got the Walleye as the portions were larger but it wasn't very flavorful. My son had the Perch and it was worth the extra couple of dollars. My son had 6-7 pieces and it was plenty to eat. Overall, very good fish fry; the best I have had in Algonquin area. The batter is lite and crispy and the fish does not taste frozen. Arrived on a rainy Saturday evening at 6:30pm. The parking lot was packed and we were worried about finding a spot but got lucky. We went here tonight for dinner because I simply didn't feel like cooking. We had my 91 year old dad with us so I called ahead to make a reservation as dad uses a walker. They were incredibly accommodating and had a table waiting. (Point for Cruisin') Let me just start by saying the food was awesome! Dad started with the chili (he is truly a chili aficionado) and my husband and I tried the boneless wing in chili sauce. They definitely used authentic Asian chili sauce. Sweet and slightly spicy...delicious! My husband tried the German special...weiner schnitzel with noodles, potatoes, red cabbage, applesauce and green beans. I.e. a LOT of food. Dad had grilled shrimp, beans and coleslaw (he chose the two sides) while I had their Texas cheeseburger. Everything was delicious. My burger was perfectly cooked and my fries were lovely and crisp. The table next to us ordered the fried chicken and it smelled fantastic. I so want to go back to try it! Our drinks were great as well. What made the evening exceptional was our waiter Kenny and another staff member Jake. They were wonderful. Attentive but not intrusive. They were exceptionally helpful and friendly. This place is a hidden gem. Yes...it may seem a bit of a dive but look beyond that and you will not be disappointed. I remember when I was working as a corporate concierge that a high level CEO told me that a true foodie, when asked for a restaurant recommendation, would give three options ...a high end choice, a middle of the road option and a total dive with the similarity being that they all have great food. Been to Cruisin four times now and haven't had a bad meal...it's one of my favorite spots now. In an age of pubs serving frozen deep fried garbage from Sysco, Cruisin is a refreshing made from scratch type of place, one of these types of places you'd expect to see on Triple D on the Food Network. So what's good? Meatloaf is excellent, burgers, excellent, I had a chicken wrap that was delicious...and the French onion soup is awesome. Appetizers are great too, cheese curds and piston rods (battered onion pieces) mmmmmm. I always see other people's' meals and think man, I need to try that next time...to me, a mark of a good restaurant! I stopped in for lunch while visiting a friend in Hampshire. This is a charming bar and restaurant with a hot rod theme. The place is warm and inviting. It's not big so I imagine it can be packed on evenings and weekends. For lunch I had the steak sandwich. It was sliced chunks of good steak along the lines of a skirt steak, with cheese and onions that were almost done like onion rings. It was good. I've passed by this place for many years and just thought of it as the old school "working mans bar" that would have been full of "the good old boys". Boy was I wrong! We went late on a Saturday and was greeted by a friendly staff member at the cash register that seated us in a booth. The inside defiantly shows its age without having that run down look. Our server Kenny was great to work with. After telling him we were 1st time visitors and needed more time with the menu. Without being abandoned he gave us the perfect amount of time to make our selection. Being a Saturday night which just happens to be steak night I wanted to try the prime rib. To my taste buds disappointment they were out. Late on a Saturday night it's always a crapshoot whether the prime rib is still available or not. My family and I were headed to loves park for a lacrosse tournament and looking for a place to eat off I-90. This place came up in the 9th spot on the list but had good reviews so we picked it. Arrived on a Friday about 6 and got seated right away which was great. I had the fish fry combo, wife had the shrimp, daughter a wrap and son with the cheese burger sliders. All was fabulous including the spinach/artichoke dip appetizer. This is one of those off the beaten path hole in the wall places that is REALLY good! The service staff was equally great. We frequent Cruisin' quite a bit since we live in the area. We've tried many, many appetizers, but our favorites by far are the cheddar pints (like cheese curds), fried pickles (dill pickle spears deep fried), and the fried green beans (with this amazing spicy sweet n sour type sauce they serve with it). Wednesday nights used to be 50% off, and they have recently changed to 40%. Wish it was still 50%, but hey .... it's still a deal. (UPDATE 2/2/13: They no longer offer any percentage discount on Wednesday nights - very disappointing, and we don't eat here nearly as often now) Favorite entree -- the steak and chicken. It's almost always what I personally order. Be sure to also try the broasted chicken. Yum! The food is great, the service is great and the prices are reasonable. If you prefer to dine somewhere that isn't a bar atmosphere, don't worry -- the restaurant portion is separate from the bar area, though you will need to pass thru the bar area to get to the restrooms. It's also great for families (ie: it can be LOUD) - my kids love going there. OH - one last tip -- the potato cheese soup (typically served Wednesdays - not sure if/when it's served any other day) -- is DELICIOUS. A reason on it's own to go to Cruisin'!!!! read more
