What can be said that hasn't been? This place is not fancy but it was great. I enjoyed the food I got, which was a turkey melt. My niece loved her butterscotch sundae and my sister enjoyed her food and Malt. The decor is minimal and the booths are smaller, but this place is a well-oiled machine. Excited to return my next time in the city!
Super Yum! We came to town for a family event and this kitchen was highly recommended by the locals. We ordered sandwiches and malts and it was so good, decadent good. The sandwiches are HUGE, the malts also huge at first only my husband ordered. I was trying to be good but they brought me a cup and the amount they give you is enough for two. Service was great, you can tell this place gets very busy we arrived when they opened and people were already in most booths and people came in and out throughout. They also have a Candy shop, sell their own pints of ice cream and have merch! The place is located in maybe not the best area that would be my only complaint but just park near and go in and out no need to explore the area. The shop was cute and well ventilated as St. Louis was hot!
These are some of the nicest people that you would ever meet. A little corner Mom and Pop Shop that has some of the best tasting food, really reasonable prices. I suggest you get there early because the line gets quick. I had the small chili, Ham and grilled cheese with chips and pickle & cherry Pepsi and only came to $21.00. I couldn't even eat it all, had to bring it home. I did see their blt and it looked amazing, save room for that and Banana split. Very cozy and family friendly. Definitely a must try. They have been in business 113 yrs. Let's support our local business.
This is our kind of place. Old style and done correctly. Looks like family and neighborhood folks rum the place. A guy met us outside before we even got in and asked carry out or dine in. We were blessed to get to immediately be seated by yea the outdoor guy. Our belt was as advertised, with lots of bacon lettuce and mayonnaise
I came here I got invited by the owner some months back and finally was able to make it in on my own and I must say the BLT Sandwich is undisputed lol it is amazing they load it with bacon as you can see from my picture I will definitely be back to try out there shakes and other items this was a quick swing thru but crown candy is a STL fave I'm surprised it took me this long When I arrived it was middle of day so it was a little busy but very laid back everyone was so nice
This candy/ice cream shop has been around since the earlier 1900's. The place is neat and all a throw back to yester-years. The place just has a near feel to it all. I give them big kudos for keeping as much originality as they have. - Peanut clusters: these are good...but need salt added to the peanuts for a better cluster. - Banana ice cream: hey, this sure banana alright...and a decent ice cream.
Good Food, Fun Environment, and Friendly Crew. I took my riding buds from CA, WV, and IN to enjoy the iconic Heart Attack BLT and home made hand dipped ice cream. I highly recommend this StL "Old School" family owned luncheon and candy shop. Take your buds and treat them to an outstanding lunch experience.
Adorable inside. Friendly service. The amount of bacon on that BLT is insane. Could not eat it all. We split a Crown Sundae which was delicious. Great nostalgic stop.
Yum. My husband, a local, has been telling me about this place for a few years and we didn't have time to come last time we were in St. Louis so this time we made it a point to try to come for lunch. This is an old school soda shop with lunch items (hot dogs, chili, sandwiches, etc.) and milkshakes and sundaes that has been around in St. Louis for over 100 years. The inside if very nostalgic and simple and service is direct but friendly. They also have a candy counter where you can get fudge and other chocolate sweets to go. We arrived around 3pm and were lucky that we only waited about 5-10 minutes before being sat. We had our daughter and they easily brought her a highchair and some crackers. My husband was right - portions are huge here and generous and I saw several huge sandwiches and salads and shakes going around when we were looking over the menu. Prices are extremely fair here for the amount of food you are going to get. In the end, we went with the Turkey sandwich which is just the same as the BLT but with about half the amount of bacon replaced with turkey. It was delish and it's been a long time since I've had miracle whip and it was very very good. I also wanted some greens so we went with a chop salad - which was HUGE. It was served in a salad bowl basically - like the kind you use for a dinner party with friends and was loaded with cheese and more bacon and more turkey and ham and tomatoes. It was very good - but too big and too much meat when partnered with the sandwich. My husband got one of their summer special milkshakes in Dreamsicle flavor and it was very very good. It was the size of three shakes bc they brought it to us in the metal mixer and two glasses which we filled 3x! After we ate I ordered a classic sundae with coffee ice cream, fudge, baked nuts and whip and a cherry. SO good! It's a bit much - but I would def. come back for an ice cream treat. I hear there is usually a long wait but you can order at the counter to go if there is a long line - we were lucky and no wait the Friday afternoon we arrived.
Crown Candy is truly a city jewel. My granny used to bring us here every year for chocolate Easter bunnies, and those memories are still sweet. As an adult, my favorites have evolved, the strawberry malt is undefeated, and I've grown fond of the roast beef melt. And just like my grandma, I still grab the pecan clusters for myself every time. Some traditions are just meant to be kept. The ambiance is unexplainable.
Closer to 3.5. 5 for the ice cream, 5 for the decor, 3 for the food. The service was friendly and efficient and the decor is more like ice cream parlor than candy shop or soda shop but it's cute and appealing. Go for the ice cream. The shakes and malts are very large and delicious. You'll get between 2 and 3 servings per shake and they're worth every sip. The sandwiches are equally large but very meh. The heart stopping BLT was overstuffed but joyless. The turkey on the turkey melt was not especially good quality and it was very noticeable. While the shop may once have made their own confectionery they certainly don't now. Skip the repackaged store bought stuff and save your calories for the awesome chocolate malt.
Had lunch here a couple weeks ago, 8/24/26 a Monday afternoon. I like the wait area outside to not crowd the inside. We waited only a few minutes for our table for 2. Great nostalgic ambience. I had the turkey bacon melt and chocolate marshmallow malt - so good! The place was busy. Staff was friendly and attentive. We were staying in downtown near arch, but easy quick drive to get here. Don't listen to the negative reviews. I recommend it.
I have been hearing about Crown Candy for so long and finally made it out here with some coworkers. We went on a weekday around 1pm and still had to wait about 45 minutes outside for a table of 4. Inside is very antique and old school with like twenty seats. The staff moves fast and is super friendly. I had to try the chocolate milkshake, definitely 10/10. I got the tuna salad sandwich and it was basically all tuna with barely any bread and on the saltier side. I still ate it all. My coworkers got different sandwiches and they seemed to like theirs more. We also saw a couple of people order the one pound bacon sandwich which is wild! I could never do it but it was cool to see it in person. Overall I liked the atmosphere and the history of the place but the tuna sandwich is not something I would get again. I do want to try their handmade candy too next time.
This place was on Man vs Food, since then I have wanted to go here, when I got the chance to go to St Louis, had to come here. When you walk in you get this 1960's ice cream shop type of feel, which is pretty cool. The place was really busy, the line was out the door, so anyways we were finally seated, and it look a good 20 minutes for someone to take our order, then at least 30 minutes for us to get our order. Our server was very rude, and not very helpful. Anyways the Pineapple Shake was really good, and very filling. After that it took about another 15 minutes to pay for our shakes. Overall the Shakes were good and the ambiance of the place was great, but the service ruined the experience. read more

Another place in STL recommended by a friend. My biggest complaint when ordering a BLT from other restaurants is the skimpy helping of bacon. Complain no more! This sandwich is stacked with bacon. I little too crisp at times but still a great sandwich. Paired it with a true malt and I was in heaven. Didn't even bother with the chips or pickle. The area looks sketchy but have no fear...at least in the daytime. read more

This place gets four stars for great malts & candy, classic interior, and nostalgia factor. But can we talk about this BLT? I love BLTs. I love bacon. I love eating large quantities of bacon, to the horror of anyone I may be eating with at the time. That being said: this sandwich is a waste of time. They cook their bacon to chewy, limp consistency, rendering it nearly impossible to eat given there are five layers of it. 90% of your bites will be nothing but limp B with no L or T (or mayo) to speak of. I feel dumb for having eaten this. But the chocolate banana malt was great. I'd happily go back, just keep your pound of soggy bacon away from me. read more

This is one of STL's gems. If you're in the mood for a sandwich or dessert give them a try. My friend Camille ordered a chocolate malt. I have no clue how someone can try and drink 5 of these (Man v. Food episode). I doubt I could even finish one. I had a Fire Chief sundae. Everything including the service was spot on and nostalgic. They have a selection of confections to buy to satisfy any sweet tooth. I'd recommend visiting at off hours. They only have a few booths and waits can be out the door. Plus people are not in a hurry to leave with a 1lb BLT in front of them. read more

Stop #23 on my "Eating my way through Chicago/St. Louis and possibly doing other things on this trip Summer Tour 2011" was for something cold to eat while braving the heat. Crown Candy Kitchen came calling to me from my travel food book. That and my couch surfing host said it was a must stop before leaving St. Louis. it has been here since 1913 and we all know how I love old things. When I walked in the door there was a line. I decided I would sit at a table and it so happened that the line was for takeout. I took a seat in one of the small 2 seater booths, but then realized I'd rather eat (drink) my shake outside in the heat. I got back up and stood in line. I already knew what I was going to order. The Johnny Rabbit Special which is a fresh banana malt with whipped cream, nuts and nutmeg. Perfection in a large cup. That is all I can say about it. More of a perfection when it is pushing 100 degrees and humid outside. My malt was made and I headed outside to sit on one of the benches on the side of Crown Candy Kitchen. Upon sitting down and putting my malt on the bench it immediately tipped over and fell on the ground. Luckily the lid stayed on and nothing was lost. I swear I would have cried. I'm man enough to admit that. read more

Probably one of the coolest places in the Lou. My wife first talked about going here about 2 years ago. She had some idea about creating a list of 101 things to do in 1001 days. One of her goals was to try 10 new places to eat in that time. One of the places was CCK, at first I was like "seriously I am not into candy that much." Trust me I like candy but I won't go someplace to play more when I can go to target and get pretty much anything I want. So we finally went here on a Stay-cation shorty after our daughter was born. I will admit that we were completely lost when we got in the building. I was not sure what to do as far as where to sit and what to do. It did take a while for the waitress to get to the table and when we ordered waters we got a glass that was laterally the size of a shot glass. But I guess that is what they serve water in. We looked at the menu and were again lost not that we couldn't figure out the menu but there were so many good things that we didn't know which item to order. then we had a lady tell us from across the booth to order desert first because you will fill up on the regular food and never finish the desert. I think we should have done that because I ordered the roast beef sandwich and it was enormous and cheap. The beef was a little unseasoned but amazing and the cheddar was a great touch. I love the chips and pickle to. I had to eat only half because I wanted to save some room for desert. I think either way you can never save enough room for the desert here. I ordered the uncle Sam and it was huge and delicious. We went back about a month later and I got the Heart stopping BLT and I loved it, I think bacon is the best food on earth so this was amazing. My wife tried to tell me to order it without the mayo and I was like I might as well not order the sandwich if you are worried about the calories. Over all this place an STL Gem and I hope that they stick around a while, I know this place will be here 100 years in 2013, and that is amazing. Keep up the awesome job CCK!! Also the malt challenge is kinda Gross at least witnessing people trying it. When we went the second time it wasn't to busy and a guy was attempting to eat 120oz. of malt and his friends were taking pictures with a nice DSLR, He ended up running outside and yakking up every bit of it. Yeah I think this is why other countries hate us sometimes, people are starving and we are throwing up malts. Either way you wont find me trying this. But I have to admit for comma inducing comfort food this is the best place even for the drive and surrounding area (which is not that bad). read more

What's there to say that hasn't already been said? Crown Candy Kitchen is a landmark and a delight. It's a regular stop on my "places to show people new to St Louis" and all of my out of town guests thoroughly enjoy lunch here. I recommend the egg salad sandwich. The Heart Stopping BLT is awesome, too. My favorite malt flavor is Oreo, although all of them are really good. The malts are big enough to fill three glasses, so don't be afraid to share! read more
Super cute place. Very nostalgic. I went one day for lunch, and there was NO LINE. I was seated immediately! Hooray! Of course, it was only 11:15am and it was already pushing 97 outside. But there was a line when we left. My companion wouldn't let me tag him in my check-in because he shouldn't have left work for lunch so early. My lunch was their BLT (obscene amounts of delicious bacon) and a chocolate malt. It's a good malt. I don't know what would make it special or unique, it being a chocolate malt, but it was very worth it (fiscally and calorically). Why is there Coca-Cola memorabilia when they serve Pepsi products? read more

Visiting Crown Candy around once a year is a must for me. We're so lucky to still have this little reminder of the St. Louis' rich history. Yep, it is in somewhat of a shady area - BUT, I was surprised to see on this visit that there has been quite a bit of rehabbing done. They are definitely working on it. The service is clearly a result of the line you have to wait in to get a seat. I found it to be quick and impersonal, but not rude. The place, itself, is tiny. The booths are very reminiscent of a time when obesity wasn't the norm (and kind of makes you feel like a fat ass, regardless of your size). Speaking of obesity, I went with the obvious menu choice - The Heart-Stopping BLT. I love bacon! Love it! But, this was just ok. They deep fry their bacon, which makes it chewy...not the crispy consistency I was hoping for. The sandwich is impressive looking, nonetheless. The ice cream is awesome. I ordered a chocolate shake, which was huge and delicious. After seeing the extensive lists of sundaes, I would like to try one of those in the future. All in all, I'd say Crown Candy is more impressive on the ice cream front than the food. It's definitely worth a visit, though. read more

Delicious, cozy little deli and candy shop. Has THE BEST MILKSHAKE IN ST LOUIS! All shakes, even the soda shakes are amazing. Had their Turkey bacon sandwich, a little too much bacon for my taste but amazing no less. A must visit restaurant downtown. read more

atmosphere [5 stars] I really enjoyed the old diner feel! service [4 stars] price [3.5 stars] Overall, fair. The chocolate, on the other hand, is much more expensive since they make it themselves. shakes [4 stars] The shakes are amazing! If you order a fruit flavor, there are bits of fruit in the shake--big plus. Also, there are always large lumps of ice cream, which I love. They are very big, so I recommend sharing with someone. Tip: you can order a shake of any flavor of ice cream they have, even if it's not on the shake menu. food [3 stars] The food can be good or bad. The first time I went, my cousin and I shared the fish sandwich, which was pretty good, but definitely nothing special. The second time I went, my boyfriend had the chili mac, which he said was good at first, but then gross at the end since it was watery at the bottom. The chocolate looks good, but too pricey for me so I didn't get to try it. All the other candy looks like stuff they bought to sell and items you can buy at any other candy store...Also, you have to buy at least 1/4 lb of each kind you want, which is a bit annoying. read more

Anytime we are around here, we have to get something to eat!! Considering we live in Georgia, we come a long way!! This trip we were wanting something to go because we had stopped at Broadbent Ham in Kuttawa, KY for lunch. But I can't miss a visit to Crown Candy Kitchen. So we ordered a tamale with chili and cheese along with my fav..cherry milkshake and a strawberry malt. When we got to Kansas City, we heated up the tamale for dinner. Wonderful wonderful!! The only problem is I have to wait til 2020 football season when we plat Mizzou before I get to come back. And we will have to come twice because I still have to have my BLT! read more

This place has been open since 1013, it has been featured on Man vs Food, and it does have a huge amount of positive Yelp reviews, so of course it was going to be line out the door busy. Actually, I got here on a Saturday evening, and it was pretty empty with lots of tables. That sounds like a good time to go, before you hitting up the town Saturday night. The restaurant itself is like stepping back in time. The tiny booths, the old time mini juke boxes at every table (which don't work), the retro posters on the walls, well - it is exactly what I expected from one of these "St. Louis Worlds Fair" places. So why would you go here? For the candy and the shakes. The food is just an extra, don't go here for food. I had something very basic, a root beer float with vanilla ice cream. It was absolutely delicious. The ice cream was not overly sweet but yet very creamy and rich. Just fantastic. It was also served in just the right glass. Some chickens had to work extra hard for my egg salad sandwich, it was absolutely huge, but just eh in flavor. I think it is something I can buy pre-made at the grocery store, but bigger. On the bright side it was cheap. The BLT which everyone talks about here has what looks like an entire package of cooked bacon in between 2 pieces of bread. It was a pretty scary looking sandwich. My friend had a shake, which came in a 24oz container and then a glass you could pour it into. It was also delicious, one of the better shakes I have ever had. Not sweet, but rich. I don't know how anyone can drink 5 of them in 30 minutes though for their challenge, that seems almost inhuman. There is a large selection of house-made candies and chocolates available to purchase as well. Bottom line - go there for the amazing shakes, malts, floats, and candy. The food is just there if you are hungry and don't feel like going anywhere else. If they didn't serve it, easy 5 stars. read more

I came to fall in love with the confections of Crown Candy in late 2002. I moved back home to the East Coast and came back in 2006 and managed to stay in touch with one of the owners. From then on I was always served up shiny white boxes loaded with all sorts of chocolates. The turtles are just blow-your-mind-tasty! I finally made the trip to the actual location and indulged in a chocolate malt shake --whoa if I was born in the early days I'd say this was what my grandparents reminisce about. It was worth the walk from where we parked and worth the 10 excuse me's to the counter to place the to go shake order. Need to go back and sample some food, I think I'll take my bacon loving friend to try one highly recommended BLT, apparently it really puts the B in B-L-T! read more
