What can be said that hasn't been? This place is not fancy but it was great. I enjoyed the food I got, which was a turkey melt. My niece loved her butterscotch sundae and my sister enjoyed her food and Malt. The decor is minimal and the booths are smaller, but this place is a well-oiled machine. Excited to return my next time in the city!
Super Yum! We came to town for a family event and this kitchen was highly recommended by the locals. We ordered sandwiches and malts and it was so good, decadent good. The sandwiches are HUGE, the malts also huge at first only my husband ordered. I was trying to be good but they brought me a cup and the amount they give you is enough for two. Service was great, you can tell this place gets very busy we arrived when they opened and people were already in most booths and people came in and out throughout. They also have a Candy shop, sell their own pints of ice cream and have merch! The place is located in maybe not the best area that would be my only complaint but just park near and go in and out no need to explore the area. The shop was cute and well ventilated as St. Louis was hot!
These are some of the nicest people that you would ever meet. A little corner Mom and Pop Shop that has some of the best tasting food, really reasonable prices. I suggest you get there early because the line gets quick. I had the small chili, Ham and grilled cheese with chips and pickle & cherry Pepsi and only came to $21.00. I couldn't even eat it all, had to bring it home. I did see their blt and it looked amazing, save room for that and Banana split. Very cozy and family friendly. Definitely a must try. They have been in business 113 yrs. Let's support our local business.
This is our kind of place. Old style and done correctly. Looks like family and neighborhood folks rum the place. A guy met us outside before we even got in and asked carry out or dine in. We were blessed to get to immediately be seated by yea the outdoor guy. Our belt was as advertised, with lots of bacon lettuce and mayonnaise
I came here I got invited by the owner some months back and finally was able to make it in on my own and I must say the BLT Sandwich is undisputed lol it is amazing they load it with bacon as you can see from my picture I will definitely be back to try out there shakes and other items this was a quick swing thru but crown candy is a STL fave I'm surprised it took me this long When I arrived it was middle of day so it was a little busy but very laid back everyone was so nice
This candy/ice cream shop has been around since the earlier 1900's. The place is neat and all a throw back to yester-years. The place just has a near feel to it all. I give them big kudos for keeping as much originality as they have. - Peanut clusters: these are good...but need salt added to the peanuts for a better cluster. - Banana ice cream: hey, this sure banana alright...and a decent ice cream.
Good Food, Fun Environment, and Friendly Crew. I took my riding buds from CA, WV, and IN to enjoy the iconic Heart Attack BLT and home made hand dipped ice cream. I highly recommend this StL "Old School" family owned luncheon and candy shop. Take your buds and treat them to an outstanding lunch experience.
Adorable inside. Friendly service. The amount of bacon on that BLT is insane. Could not eat it all. We split a Crown Sundae which was delicious. Great nostalgic stop.
Yum. My husband, a local, has been telling me about this place for a few years and we didn't have time to come last time we were in St. Louis so this time we made it a point to try to come for lunch. This is an old school soda shop with lunch items (hot dogs, chili, sandwiches, etc.) and milkshakes and sundaes that has been around in St. Louis for over 100 years. The inside if very nostalgic and simple and service is direct but friendly. They also have a candy counter where you can get fudge and other chocolate sweets to go. We arrived around 3pm and were lucky that we only waited about 5-10 minutes before being sat. We had our daughter and they easily brought her a highchair and some crackers. My husband was right - portions are huge here and generous and I saw several huge sandwiches and salads and shakes going around when we were looking over the menu. Prices are extremely fair here for the amount of food you are going to get. In the end, we went with the Turkey sandwich which is just the same as the BLT but with about half the amount of bacon replaced with turkey. It was delish and it's been a long time since I've had miracle whip and it was very very good. I also wanted some greens so we went with a chop salad - which was HUGE. It was served in a salad bowl basically - like the kind you use for a dinner party with friends and was loaded with cheese and more bacon and more turkey and ham and tomatoes. It was very good - but too big and too much meat when partnered with the sandwich. My husband got one of their summer special milkshakes in Dreamsicle flavor and it was very very good. It was the size of three shakes bc they brought it to us in the metal mixer and two glasses which we filled 3x! After we ate I ordered a classic sundae with coffee ice cream, fudge, baked nuts and whip and a cherry. SO good! It's a bit much - but I would def. come back for an ice cream treat. I hear there is usually a long wait but you can order at the counter to go if there is a long line - we were lucky and no wait the Friday afternoon we arrived.
Crown Candy is truly a city jewel. My granny used to bring us here every year for chocolate Easter bunnies, and those memories are still sweet. As an adult, my favorites have evolved, the strawberry malt is undefeated, and I've grown fond of the roast beef melt. And just like my grandma, I still grab the pecan clusters for myself every time. Some traditions are just meant to be kept. The ambiance is unexplainable.
Closer to 3.5. 5 for the ice cream, 5 for the decor, 3 for the food. The service was friendly and efficient and the decor is more like ice cream parlor than candy shop or soda shop but it's cute and appealing. Go for the ice cream. The shakes and malts are very large and delicious. You'll get between 2 and 3 servings per shake and they're worth every sip. The sandwiches are equally large but very meh. The heart stopping BLT was overstuffed but joyless. The turkey on the turkey melt was not especially good quality and it was very noticeable. While the shop may once have made their own confectionery they certainly don't now. Skip the repackaged store bought stuff and save your calories for the awesome chocolate malt.
Had lunch here a couple weeks ago, 8/24/26 a Monday afternoon. I like the wait area outside to not crowd the inside. We waited only a few minutes for our table for 2. Great nostalgic ambience. I had the turkey bacon melt and chocolate marshmallow malt - so good! The place was busy. Staff was friendly and attentive. We were staying in downtown near arch, but easy quick drive to get here. Don't listen to the negative reviews. I recommend it.
I have been hearing about Crown Candy for so long and finally made it out here with some coworkers. We went on a weekday around 1pm and still had to wait about 45 minutes outside for a table of 4. Inside is very antique and old school with like twenty seats. The staff moves fast and is super friendly. I had to try the chocolate milkshake, definitely 10/10. I got the tuna salad sandwich and it was basically all tuna with barely any bread and on the saltier side. I still ate it all. My coworkers got different sandwiches and they seemed to like theirs more. We also saw a couple of people order the one pound bacon sandwich which is wild! I could never do it but it was cool to see it in person. Overall I liked the atmosphere and the history of the place but the tuna sandwich is not something I would get again. I do want to try their handmade candy too next time.

Well the name is no joke. HEART STOPPING BLT // $10.00 Thick-sliced bacon, lettuce and tomato with Miracle Whip served on white toast. Anything with a couple of slices of bacon is bound to be good. This amazing BLT must have had a 1/2 pound. The bacon was cooked perfectly and not soggy like many restaurants seem to do today. The freshness of the tomatoes and lettuce made a simple American classic even better. This is a must visit place if you are in St. Louis. read more
Bacon, Bacon and more Bacon. Ordered several menu items, however, the Heart Stopping BLT was the star. Thick cut bacon, along with a thick slice of fresh tomato and crisp head lettuce....AMAZING. We waited outside in line for more than an hour, but it was worth the wait. The Malts and Shakes are hand-dipped and were decadent. It's a little cramped inside for group seating. But the 5 of us squeezed in a little table and enjoyed every bite. This local hideaway was also featured on the Food Network for "Old School Soda Fountains". Service was okay, but the food, decor and overall experience earned it 4 Stars. read more

One of my favorite stops in St Louis for a treat but the food is just as good! Went for lunch during my most recent visit to St Louis with my boyfriend (who had never been). Got to try the chicken salad sandwich only available on Tuesday and Thursday and it was delicious! Tyler got the BLT and I quote, "Best BLT I've ever had!". Shared ice cream because we couldn't leave without dessert so tried the banana and was not disappointed. read more

The first time my husband brought me to his home in St. Louis, he also brought me to Crown Candy Kitchen...sigh. If you like feeling you're in a movie from around the 40's, you will love Candy Kitchen. Crown is almost 100 years old. The interior contains layers from various decades: authentic Coke memorabilia co-mingles with old menus posted on the walls, a checkerboard linoleum floor and old white booths that are tight and high with coat hooks on the end. You really get an authentic taste of the past, for better or worse! Reviews need to break down the 3 components of the store: Ice Cream (Soda Fountain) Candy Food It's too one-dimensional to rate Crown simply on the food and service; it's a soda fountain. Crown's business is selling nostalgia - mainly through ice cream & candy! If you come here primarily for a sandwich, you've missed the point. This is a legit soda fountain. The ice cream is made in-store, so it is unique. It's also rich and dense, with 14% butterfat! Old school: In addition to hot fudge or caramel, sundaes with things like fruit salad and pecan pralines rule the day. You can get a chocolate phosphate or vanilla Coke. The shakes ($5) are huge and come with their metal mixing cups. Chocolate here is very good, made in house and - to my thinking - should be noted primarily for the antique molds they use. I still have an Easter chocolate my husband got me: a bunny couple dressed in clothes circa 1930's looking like they're going to the Easter Parade! But they have 100's of old molds which cast the most beautiful and unusual designs. Any chocolate freak needs to stop here for the molds alone. Crown is noted for their nut clusters and old fashioned fruit candies they still sell...you have to see the counter yourself! If you want food harking back to a mid-20th century lunch counter done capably, eat here. I usually am here only for sweets but when I eat food here, I know I'm eating a lunch fairly authentic to the menu's inception. To modern eaters this would be an insipid ham sandwich or innocuous tuna fish...but to nostalgia peeps, it's a little bit of fun. My advice: don't come to Crown for stellar service or food...come for a taste of the old days, and you'll leave satisfied. read more
Yes, Crown Candy is open on Sundays. Get there before noon and you won't have to wait in line, either. Yes, this means I am encouraging yelpers to skip church AND eat an incredibly unhealthy meal. I am so going to hell for this review... Anyway, the line was non-existent so we were able to get a booth right away. Service was a tad slow this time around, but once we ordered, food came out within 10 minutes. Damn that's quick! And as always, the bacon was piled high and slathered in Miracle Whip. Mmmm mmmm good. The BF ordered a bacon turkey melt and was able to snag some of my overflowing bacon and add to his sammie. For dessert, we indulged in some original Crown Candy ice cream. A giant chocolate shake is probably the best way to wash down several pounds of bacon. The BF downed a double scoop cone. So good! Still one of my favorite STL spots (when the line isn't wrapped around the corner) and I love taking out of town guests here. read more
Finally, made a visit to the historic Crown Candy Kitchen after watching its infamous episode on Man vs. Food on the Travel Channel! I brought an out of town guest here after a nice hefty lunch from Pappy's. We were too full to order our own shakes, so we ended up splitting a Strawberry MALT Shake ($4.25). We felt like we're on a Man-Date sitting across in a tiny white booth sharing a shake. But it wasn't that bad! The waitress kindly brought two fountain glasses and a large iced cold metal shaker filled with the awe-inspiring strawberry MALT shake. We were able to fill both glasses and there was still a decent amount of shake left in the shaker. Without a doubt, I gotta say this is the BEST shake that I ever had. (See pic) Some Tips: * Be sure to order the MALT shake. The malt shake has malt power added to the milk shake to give it a fuller texture and extra sweet flavor! Each bite is so much better! * The Famous Malt Shake Challenge. To drink 5 malts in 30 mins. Only ~ 25 people have completed this ginormous task since 1913, so if you're up for it, you too can become a historical icon. The owner said that challenge is not done on the weekends due to its busy schedule and the best time to embark on this contest is on the weekdays at 10:45AM (when the store opens) or 4:00PM (before the dinner crowd hits). Overall, I love CCK's vintage classic look & feel. Please don't change a single thing about it! read more
Crown Candy is truly legendary here in St. Louis. I realize that by giving Crown Candy a 1 out of 5 that I might be committing a blasphemous act. But trust me-- it deserves a 1. My husband and I took my brother and sister-in-law (who were in town from Georgia) for our first experience at the restaurant. When we got there, there was a line out the door waiting to eat... a good sign we thought! The line moved INCREDIBLY slowly because the waiters did not know how to turn over tables (checks would just sit there) and busing a table took fooorreeeveer! When we finally got a seat, the waitress gave us a cup of water (a little bigger than a shot glass) and said she'd be right back to take our order. 15 minutes later, she finally took our order. As a table, we ordered milk shakes, chilli dogs, a roast beef sandwich and a grilled cheese. The milk shakes were truly great. The food was sub par at best. This place has the potential to be great--the atmosphere is really unique, the menu is good... but the servers are truly awful. They had their face peirced, sloppy style and lots of attitude. Not to mention-- there were a lot of them! While we waited at our table to be served, I watched as two guys just stood there at the counter and stared at us. My advice: If you MUST go here, go for a shake in the middle of the day. I wouldn't eat lunch here. There are SO many great sandwich shops in St. Louis to waste your time. read more

What a great throw back soda shop diner. The place is small and quaint and so cute! The portions are more than filling. The service is excellent. Everyone was super helpful, accommodating and quick. Only complaint is that it's pre sliced deli turkey, not real turkey. read more
How dare anyone not love a place that has a contest where one must consume 5 malts in 30 minutes, only to win... the price of the malts? This place has been around for a thousand years, and unlike Margie's Candies in Chicago, the candy on its shelves is presumably younger. We didn't try any of the lunch items, though I've heard the BLT is awesome. The Crown Sundae seemed like a classic choice, and it was devoured quickly, though I understand why they warn patrons with dentures away from the hot fudge. Damn, what I wouldn't have given to have taken my braces off with that stuff as a kid. Brother's banana chocolate malt was also tasty, but not as malty as I would have expected. My only reason for less than 5 stars: The line set-up is too confusing. Who is in line for a table? Who is waiting to buy boxes of chocolates to stuff in their faces in the car? It's too hard to guess. read more

Can "Crown" be a more appropriate name? I can't believe that it's taken me so long to review the final piece of the Man v. Food St. Louis trilogy. However, it wasn't because I don't love Crown Candy Kitchen. In fact, it would be the opposite. I wanted to get a full experience here before I gave my Yeeps a verdict. But on ice cream alone, this place is five stars. I'm almost ashamed that it took an outsider to inform me of this place's existence. However, Adam Richman did live in St. Louis for some time, so it's not completely out of place. Still, when the joint has been around for a hundred years, you would think that I might have heard of it. Apparently, my dad has been a patron of CCK since before I was born. I can see why . . . My review had been postponed partly because of the construction going on around I-70. It was easy to get to the store, but not so easy to escape North City! The area around CCK isn't very inviting, so one might try to make it out there earlier in the day. However, early evening is a pretty great time to get come by, too! I stopped by last week to get a BLT and a malt, but I didn't bother to look at the store hours, which end at eight during the week. I had ten minutes, so I didn't push for dinner. Nonetheless, I got the biggest effin' chocolate ice cream that the law allows! And it was mighty! I've had the ice cream in both malt and cone form, and I am never disappointed with the quality. Now that I-70 has been "fixed," I will be patronizing Crown Candy more in these summer months. One issue that I've noticed is the service can get a little underwhelming. They don't always have the friendliest people manning the counter. One time we came in and the clerk said there was a twenty minute wait on malts. I didn't quite understand how it could take that much time to put ice cream scopes in a mixer and add some milk and malt mix. But we got cones and were just as happy! I still haven't had the BLT, so there might be a follow-up soon. Best sandwich in America? Maybe not. But my buds need to know for themselves! read more

So my dad and I had this ongoing debate on my last visit...which is more dangerous...North St. Louis, or East Oakland? This is one of those dubious distinction kinds of conversations. Oh, hell! I'll visit either North St. Louis or East Oakland any day of the week, so there! Can you say crumbling, yet charming? On my way to Crown Candy Kitchen from Downtown St. Louis (City Museum), I got lost, took the wrong exit, turned around, DIDN'T GET SHOT, and landed at the ice cream parlor just fine with my kidlet. We repasted on Midwest-stylie tamales (no corn husks were harmed!) and ate the sundae they served that most resembled Fenton's Black and Tan. It was easy to park, easy to eat, not overly crowded, and full of the vintage decor other Yelpers have described. I'm still alive, with no gunshot wounds, and still not obese, despite St. Louis's finest efforts. Update October 15, 2007: Rest in Peace, Daddy! Jerry Lee, born 1942, Rolla MO; died October 12, 2007, St. Louis MO. read more
I waited too long to write this review....I was in St. Louis over the Memorial Day weekend, and my god son reaaaalllllly wanted to go to Crown Candy. Of course, like the rest of the cable/satellite viewing populace, we saw that fat dude try to down 128 oz of milkshake. Idiot. Not sure if he was successful or not, but I'm sure he's now lactose intolerant. But, I digress. I've heard about this place from my friends who live in the area. And, secretly, along with my god son, I, too, wanted to go to Crown. The deal sealer was when I asked about the menu, and my god son's parents, who know my unadulterated love for bacon and all things pork, said, "Ooooh, they have a BLT I KNOW you are going to love." Sold. So, we made the trek to inner St. Louis. I'll have to admit, Crown's neighborhood is unflattering, to say the least. BUT, when you see the striped awning in the distance, you know something good is coming up. Diamond in the rough. You will have to wait. But, it's sooooo worth the wait. You have to believe. Looking around is like traveling back to a time when things were less complicated, calories weren't part of the English vocabulary, and milkshakes were actually made with, well, milk, and chocolate was more than just a flavor...it was a way of life. Unfortunately the jukeboxes at the table didn't work...and the jukebox in the entrance is digital (vintage fail). But, you won't have time to worry about music as you gaze at the "wall of shake and goody flavors" above the soda jerk station (yes, jerk is a good thing....well, in the case of beef, even better). The menu is small but specific - diner sandwiches, hamburgers, etc. My advice - go directly to the BLT...do not pass go...do not collect $200. If your belief system forbids you from eating pork, or you're vegetarian, or you are the owner of a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, order something else (like a shake!). However, if you even have the slightest love for bacon, the BLT is the value menu win, IMHO. I ordered the BLT, and asked the server if I could have extra bacon -- I'm used to the wimpy 3-slice BLTs served in Corporate-Diner's-R-Us, Inc., so I like to have extra bacon. She laughed at me and mumbled something under her breath as she walked away, and laughed again. When my sandwich came out, I realized why she (and my dining compatriots) were laughing at my ridiculous request. My sandwich was bursting with bacon goodness; bacon was overflowing from the toasted white bread, and overpowered the lettuce and tomato (there was lettuce and tomato?). Hell, the bacon even took over the fries. I don't know if there was a pound of bacon, but, that sandwich was a bacon lover's dream come true. (see picture). An the malt. Ooooooh, the chocolate malt. My god son and I share one (which is more like two, or three). Malt powder on the lip of the metal blender cup. And, sooooo chocolate-y. Possibly the best chocolate malt I've had. Evah. When in St. Louis, I insist you visit Crown Candy. It's charming. The diner itself is such a historical treat (see pictures). The food is very good (my buddy had the reuben...they must've learned to pile corned beef like that at Manny's in Chicago or Katz's in NYC, there is so. much. corned. beef. I think they make their own Russian dressing, too). And, order the BLT. You will not regret it. I firmly believe in that. God. Man. Bacon. Oh, no need to order extra bacon...trust me. read more

I love this place. Pros: Great BLT, but it is heart stopping...like a pound of bacon. Who the hell needs that much bacon in one meal?!?!? The chocolate shake is yummy but very rich....it could give some of you the runs. Lol My all time fav is the Crown Newport Sundae. So my way is vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, hot Carmel sauce, and the best damn pecans this side of da Mississippi! If you like you can get another flavor ice cream. But I like the original one. Oh and how could I forget. It's topped off with whip cream and a cherry. The whip cream makes it a Newport. The service is REALLY fast, though not always the friendliest. Oh yes, if you go and see a line that runs from Old North St. Louis (neighborhood it's in) to East Assstalk (doesn't exist, just a long ass line). Then politely go inside and get in the "Take Out" line. It's usually shorter and hell you can eat at the park across the street. Cons: Everything inside this building screams small. The inside is jammed packed with all the necessities to make your experience awesome. The booths are truly made so that only children fit comfortably. And don't consider trying to have a "personal" conversation. The wall between booths is short, so the people next to you can read your lips and listen. And I don't mean to dead people, they hear you! All in all this is a historic St. Louis family owned business with some good ass ice cream. Make this a must stop despite the miniature booths. read more

Every time we come from Florida Crown candy is in our plans! Best bacon sandwich and malts!!! Really cute store! Love it!!!!!! A must see!!! read more
I must tell you that the milkshakes here are to die for! It's been a few weeks and in my mind I still can taste the chocolate banana malt that I had. With every sip there were chunks of banana coming through the straw it was amazing! I have a five shake challenge here and if you ever watched man versus food you would know that there was an epic failure! They also have chocolate and candy but the hard candy and gummy candies are not made in house. The guy told me that the chocolate was. It's a cute little place very kitcsh it was very clean. It's just an older building. read more
