They demoed the old chimney, jackhammered the foundation, poured a new one, and built us a working chimney from (below) the ground up! For all he knew it could have been completely remodeled last year because he hadn't even seen it yet. Then as soon as he did open it he told me I wanted a gas insert which I definitely do not and told him as much. He continued to try to instill fear the entire time he was there which was over 2 hours. He talked about several options and things that need fixed. And a special kind of sweep that was needed due to a level 3 creosote in the chimney. During his sweep and inspection he had a lot of problems with his equipment and kept banging them loudly up and down in the chimney likely causing more damage. Then he got to the top and told us our damper handle wasn't even connected. which it was before he started banging around in there. I know so because it is only 2 years old and only been used a handful of times since it has been installed. He was rude and disruptive, interjecting into the conversations my 94 year old Grandmother was having with her nurse and her caregiver. Once he finally finished with a lot more fear mongering and telling me, "you can roll the dice if you want to, but what you really want is a gas insert." Again, I had to tell him I don't want a gas insert. He was insistent on me how it would actually heat the room and and again I told him I don't want to heat the room, I have a furnace for that. As he finally left he assured me he was sending a quote which I assumed would have all of the options he talked about on it. Well, 2 weeks later a thank you card came from the owner. Cute, but I'd rather have the quote. A month later my husband finally reached out to ask for the quote since it was never sent. A quote was sent, finally, for a product called Priorfire Retrofit Fireplace for $15,000. Not only was this option never mentioned while the tech was in my home. The options he did mention were not in the quote. This option is horrible, it is stupid expensive and makes the fire place look like a child's toy. It is like bathfitter for fireplaces. It would reduce the size of our gorgeous fireplace by at least 2/3 and it just looks like a terrible cheap bandaid fix. No one that respects the quality and craftsmanship of their home would install this and be happy with it. I don't have a problem with spending money on this project but if I am going to put 15k into my fireplace I want it fixed not dramatically downgraded.

In the end, I pursued another option thanks to a friend's connection that got me a very good deal. I contacted Watergate about some roofing issues at my home that I was aware were quite serious. I had two friends who both gave me a good reference for Watergate. One friend indicated they were they only company he'd dealt with that did not default to recommending a new roof. The other friend shared that they support Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit I also believe in. So, I contacted the company and requested an estimate. They set a date, and their employee arrived on the day and at the time that was scheduled. As I recall, his name was Max. We discussed my concerns. He did a thorough search of my concerns, and indicated he'd be contacting me soon with an estimate. He provided the estimate within the expected time-frame, which ended up being pretty rare among the estimates I did receive. He communicated well. He followed up multiple times. I will note the estimate was the second highest I received, though considerably lower than the highest. However, in their defense I felt like Watergate was really targeting solving all my concerns. They do offer a financing option. One slight customer service quirk of mine - if I e-mail you, I expect an e-mail response. Both times I e-mailed, within five minutes I got a phone call. If I wanted a phone call, I'd call. This is relatively minor, but it did bug me. It didn't bug me enough to drop a star. Overall, I was pleased here. As I noted, I ultimately opted for another choice but I was impressed by the service here. It didn't feel high pressure at all, though there was intentionality. There's a difference. I love that they work in the community. Since I have two friends who also praised them, I have to still give them a thumbs up. While I didn't choose Watergate this time, I was impressed enough that I would still call them again should future work be needed.

She stated someone couldn't come out and give me an estimate or talk to me because they bundle all their estimates on certain days of the week and they don't do one on one meetings. A week or so goes by and I receive a message from someone at AAA named Joseph Sullivan, stating they would like to come out and give me an estimate. I responded to the message and said, "Thanks, but I was told you don't do that by the lady that answers your phone, so I already scheduled someone else, but if for some reason the current company falls through, I will get back in touch and have you give me an estimate." Well, that ended up happening so I got back in touch with AAA. I left them a message on their voicemail and sent Joseph a direct email asking for him to come out and give me an estimate. I received ZERO RESPONSE. That tells me all I need to know about this company and my project is a decent size job. The fact they couldn't come out and talk to me when I originally called because of how they do their estimates was bad enough, but then when I actually allowed them a second chance and they couldn't follow through tells you all you need to know about AAA Sealcoating & Paving. If you happen to find yourself losing your entire freshly finished basement to water, I Highly do…read morenot recommend using Michaelis Corporation for water mitigation. From the very beginning, we were put under pressure. The manager who came to give an estimate told us it was basically "now or never" and that if we didn't make a decision right then, he would leave because he had plenty of other other jobs lined up. When you're dealing with water in your home, that kind of pressure forces you into a rushed decision without really understanding what you're agreeing to. The work that followed did not match what we were told or what we were billed for. The biggest issue is they did not even touch the utility room, which is where the water originated from. According to their own photos, there was no extraction, or drying equipment ever in that room which is something we didn't notice until after we found water pooling under furniture weeks later during putting our basement back together. That alone makes no sense for a mitigation job. They told us they would come back the next day to check moisture levels and water percentages. They never came. Then they told us the same thing again the following days. After multiple excuses, instead of ever coming back, they told us to just shut the equipment off ourselves. They still charged us for 4 days. Not only did we find pooled water still sitting under furniture and items on the floor, mold starting, and damage to drywall and studs. Water had also gone underneath cabinetry and the island, and none of that had been removed or handled. So weird.... that's exactly why I called a mitigation company to catch and prevent. They also left a huge mess in our yard for four days that killed our grass, after telling us they would be back the next morning to clean it up. And this was not just debris from our home. It was trash from brand new equipment they brought in and unboxed at our house. We were charged for retrieving equipment from another job site to come to ours, which clearly did not happen as we watched them bring in new equipment and open it in our yard, then leave the packaging behind. EVERY TIME we called the manager he was rude and would say "I'm working 16 hour days you're gonna have to wait." When we were only holding him to what he said he would do. We were also charged for other services we did not receive, including water extraction (we never had water extracted only drying... "after hours" work that took place around 3:30 in the afternoon, extended run time fees when it was there fault they didn't come back to get their equipment, clean up and debris removal (that they left in our yard, charges for the square footage they never touched, and charged us for full scope mitigation even though they didn't touch an entire room or take out the wood tack strip under the carpet. We were charged for 8 things that did not happen. A year later, we are STILL dealing with the aftermath. What should have been handled correctly the first time has turned into more work, more stress, and even more money out of our pocket! We trusted them during a stressful situation and that was a mistake. I wouldn't consider allowing them to do work in your home, but if you do ask questions, document everything, and do not assume the invoice reflects what actually happened. These people don't care about you, your home or your safety.

A low pump, a higher pump if that first pump fails or cant keep up. And then a higher battery backup pump. I feel great knowing that my basement will stay dry no matter what. Shane did a great job today and even called to see if he could come a few minutes early. Its money spent but insurance that my basement stays perfectly healthy.
