If you happen to find yourself losing your entire freshly finished basement to water, I Highly do not recommend using Michaelis Corporation for water mitigation. From the very beginning, we were put under pressure. The manager who came to give an estimate told us it was basically "now or never" and that if we didn't make a decision right then, he would leave because he had plenty of other other jobs lined up. When you're dealing with water in your home, that kind of pressure forces you into a rushed decision without really understanding what you're agreeing to. The work that followed did not match what we were told or what we were billed for. The biggest issue is they did not even touch the utility room, which is where the water originated from. According to their own photos, there was no extraction, or drying equipment ever in that room which is something we didn't notice until after we found water pooling under furniture weeks later during putting our basement back together. That alone makes no sense for a mitigation job. They told us they would come back the next day to check moisture levels and water percentages. They never came. Then they told us the same thing again the following days. After multiple excuses, instead of ever coming back, they told us to just shut the equipment off ourselves. They still charged us for 4 days. Not only did we find pooled water still sitting under furniture and items on the floor, mold starting, and damage to drywall and studs. Water had also gone underneath cabinetry and the island, and none of that had been removed or handled. So weird.... that's exactly why I called a mitigation company to catch and prevent. They also left a huge mess in our yard for four days that killed our grass, after telling us they would be back the next morning to clean it up. And this was not just debris from our home. It was trash from brand new equipment they brought in and unboxed at our house. We were charged for retrieving equipment from another job site to come to ours, which clearly did not happen as we watched them bring in new equipment and open it in our yard, then leave the packaging behind. EVERY TIME we called the manager he was rude and would say "I'm working 16 hour days you're gonna have to wait." When we were only holding him to what he said he would do. We were also charged for other services we did not receive, including water extraction (we never had water extracted only drying... "after hours" work that took place around 3:30 in the afternoon, extended run time fees when it was there fault they didn't come back to get their equipment, clean up and debris removal (that they left in our yard, charges for the square footage they never touched, and charged us for full scope mitigation even though they didn't touch an entire room or take out the wood tack strip under the carpet. We were charged for 8 things that did not happen. A year later, we are STILL dealing with the aftermath. What should have been handled correctly the first time has turned into more work, more stress, and even more money out of our pocket! We trusted them during a stressful situation and that was a mistake. I wouldn't consider allowing them to do work in your home, but if you do ask questions, document everything, and do not assume the invoice reflects what actually happened. These people don't care about you, your home or your safety. read more

Again I implore everyone to avoid this business. If you have time, read the recent indiana Supreme Court opinion Safeco Insurance Company and Ramona Wilson v Michaelis Corp. Michaels never listens and is horrible at communicating! In that case, a faulty kitchen device caused a fire and $500,000 of damage to the woman's house. Michaelis was brought in to clean up and was instructed to leave the kitchen area untouched. "Michaelis then demolished the kitchen and discarded the [kitchen device]." Basically ruining the insurance company's only hope of recovering their $500,000. Michaelis got it dismissed on a technicality because third party screwups like this don't make them liable for the faulty kitchen device. Michaelis screwed up and got away with it! Their poor communication when I needed them is further evidence that these guys stink! Avoid them if communication is at all important to you. read more

We had scheduled an appointment for an estimate. Our basement has some water issues and we need a radon mitigation system. 45 minutes after the scheduled (and confirmed) appointment time, Nick had not shown up, nor had we received a phone call...so I called the office to let them know and to cancel. I understand things can happen, but the lack of communication didn't bode well. Maybe it was a fluke...maybe it was indicative of how the company is run. I guess I'll never know. I'm sure they aren't crying from my lack of business, but I thought the experience was worth other people knowing about. read more

I made an appointment for an estimate which the technician kept. He led me to believe that I would receive the estimate in a couple of days. After a week I contacted them to ask about it. They said that they would get back to me. No response so four days later I tried again. No response. A third try four days later. It's been another three days and still no response. We had home damage from a storm a few years ago. It took them over two years to finish the fairly small project. They were non-responsive until we learned that the agent we had left the business. We obviously fell through the cracks, but why no response when they were repeatedly contacted not only by us, but by our insurance company. It was a frustrating and disappointing time. We would never contact this company again for anything. The reason I'm now reviewing is because I hear their ads claiming such great service and I don't want this to happen to others. read more

Without a doubt, the worst experience with a restoration company. I'm writing this after hearing a commercial about how responsive and professional they are. My bathroom restoration took well over a year. They had the insurance money in the bank. Didn't show up for months at a time and then put a lien on my property because I didn't pay them before they completed the job. Walked on a cardboard floor for months. Was supposed to have a glass shower door and they put in plastic. Didn't square the walls so the door doesn't fit. Tile is falling off the walls. Grout washing out of the tile. They strong armed me with the lien hanging over my head to pay them. Their treatment of me and my property was unprofessional at best. I wouldn't use this company for anything. read more

If I could give this company 0 stars I would. I have never written a bad review about any company but my experience with them was absolutely horrible. I could literally write a very lengthy report on what happened but I'll leave it short. They deemed my basement dry and I had a second company come double check due to my uneasiness with their work and it was still 100% wet. If you want mold to grow in your basement, call these folks. If you've ever had them dry out your basement and didn't double check that it was dry by another company, check for mold because I'm sure you've got some! read more

Women....do not use this company! I used them for water in my basement and for remodeling my basement. I was hoping to use one company for several projects, and that dream has now ended. Their price was the second-highest bid on the waterproofing basement and the highest on the remodeling of the basement. I expected them to be the experts. The first person came and quoted. They said all I needed was a basement drain drilled around the basement perimeter. I asked him if the crawl space needed to be done. He said he would not if it was his basement. I had them do the work. The cost was $3500. I also showed him two drains that I believed were having problems. He said he didn't know. I called plumbers. I waited a few months to see if any more water came into the basement. Once I thought the drain had resolved the water problem. I decided to have them come quote a remodel of the basement. The quote was the highest bid to place new flooring (plank), drywall, and paint in a 940 sq foot basement. The cost was $8800. I decided to go with them anyway because they had done the waterproofing. I did not want any warranty issues because someone else installed the walls and floors. Before they started, I noticed water coming into the basement and going into the drain around the perimeter. I called the company. They adjusted the remodel to place a plastic barrier around one wall and put a new joint on one of the gutters. In addition, they set some sealant around one of the concrete and blacktop joints from the driveway. Once again, I asked whether you are sure this will prevent water and moisture in the basement before I remodel. The answer was yes. They completed the remodel on 2/2021. Once again, I started feeling moisture in the basement and called and sent texts on 7/22/2021 and 7/23/2021. The vinyl plank has buckled and bubbled up on the floor. All the basement doors were sealed closed. I had to ruin all doors to get them opened. Mold was growing everywhere. I called them back to see about the moisture and what we could do. They came the following Friday to review the work completed and needed to be done. I also called a chimney person to inspect the fireplace to be used because dry heat would assist with the problem. The chimney people said the fireplace could not be used because of the drywall and the plank being installed to the fireplace. I brought all of this up in my appointment with this company. They stated they would fix the floor and the doors. However, I needed to buy the material because the installers installed the plank too close to the wall. So I figured I should wait until the moisture was fixed. They had no recommendation for the moisture. They stated there was no problem. I was told an asphalt company was needed for the driveway (the smaller of the issues). I called the name of the asphalt company that they provided and set an appointment. The asphalt company stood me up three times. The last time, I called the asphalt company when they were late for the appointment. I was told the asphalt company employees were stuck on the highway, but was coming. They never showed. I sent a message to the Michaelis rep. He called me back and made excuses for the company, and told me I could find my own company to do the work. Once again, the small closet is the smallest problem. I have moisture in the crawl space (not water) but moisture. The moisture is going through my house. It was seen by the reps and dismissed. What I needed was a dehumidifier for the house and some crawl space barrier or vapor barrier. I have now become the expert. NOT THIS COMPANY. In addition, I have a fireplace in the basement that I specifically stated I wanted to use in the remodel. This company never consulted with a chimney person. They said they would. They are a fire restoration company. They should know the code. I cannot use it because the code requires thirteen inches of nonflammable material next to the fireplace. I would have had them do this if the "restoration company" had told me the code when doing the basement. Instead, the remodel has planked to the fireplace and drywall to the chimney tubing on the wall. Now, I have to do a remodel of the remodeled basement. The attitude of the company is not my fault or problem. However, moisture is the more significant issue. I have to deal with the crawl space moisture. I have moisture in my house that is producing mold. I called an HVAC company. They have placed a whole-house dehumidifier. The water expert for this company sent a salesperson back to my house. I showed him the problem. I contacted other people for quotes. However, I wanted to stay with the same company because they had already completed the basement. One company, one person: who should be an expert on my basement. I tried calling the representative on 9/30, 10/4, 10/9, 10/6, 10/14, 10/15, 10/18. No response. I finally got a $14,589 quote on 10/15. Call to asked questions. No response. Do NOT Use them. read more

BEST RESTORATION COMPANY EVER! I had a house fire in August of 2020 and a representative from Michaelis showed up at 1:00 am while the Firemen were still at my house! He was so kind and courteous to me that I decided to go with Michaelis for the re-build of my house. I am so glad I did, best decision I have ever made in my life! From the owner, Richard and every employee I dealt with through the scary, overwhelming and stressful ordeal they all treated me like I was family! Yes...they all made me feel like I was part of their own family, Richard, Dave, James, Amanda and Rachel. My house is BEAUTIFUL now and I was back home for Christmas! Michaelis repaired tree damage to my roof and flooding in my bedroom, which had hardwood floors. They repaired the roof, ripped out the wall and dried everything. They rebuilt the wall, painted and refinished the hardwood floors. The end result is great. They were timely, friendly and professional. read more

Perfect? No. What is? Service beyond what I have experienced from most companies? Absolutely. Masters of that dying art, and very good at their craft, we started a project with Michaelis that had a definite beginning, and seemingly had no end for our home built in 1927. I wasn't as impressed with the early stages due to a personality conflict, however that quickly buried itself working with Bill and Danny. As professional as it gets, timely, and concerned about the outcome and our happiness. I am and was impressed with the overall product, and meant it when I told them I wouldn't have used anyone else. David Hartig was very professional listening to our needs and concerns. We hired Michaelis based on his proposal. Unfortunately from there it was all downhill. Bill Verhonik was our "Project Manager" and he changed the proposal without saying a word. He never asked or told us about any changes, and those changes were not approved. He later told us what he would have recommended, and if that had been the company's initial proposal we would have hired another company. We stopped the project until an acceptable alternative was reached. Your crew was supposed to cover our belongings in the basement before cutting through the basement floor for the French Drain. They did not cover anything until I went down to see what was happening and saw they had not covered anything. I covered the washer, dryer and sink with my own tarp. Your crew covered the water heater and softener but not the desk. I believe they only had one piece of visqueen that they salvaged from somewhere on their truck and did not have any more. Luckily I had removed almost everything from the basement because I feared that this would be the case even though we were told everything would be covered. Bill said he would give us an allowance for not covering our belongings. The final bill arrived with no allowance. I had to notify your company about the allowance before it was provided. The lack of communication and disregard to our possessions really left a bad taste with us. Your company did good work as far as we know. We will not know about the effectiveness of the French Drain and underground dry well until we experience a wet season. The lack of communication and unauthorized changes along with your crew's disregard for our belongings canceled the feeling of accomplishment this project should have had. read more

The back gutter and awning of the house we'd just bought leaked all over the place in a heavy rain. It was particularly dangerous because it dumped water around the outside electrical box. Michaelis worked around my schedule to come assess it provide me quote. The cost wasn't cheap, but they didn't try to sell me a new roof or nickel and dime me with any unnecessary work. Almost immediately after I submitted the up-front payment, they scheduled the work for the next day. They worked on it through the morning and were done by lunchtime. All the leaking was solved, the repaired areas look great, all our back patio things were put back, and there was no mess left. Then Michaelis worked around my schedule again to meet for final inspection and payment. They may not be the cheapest, but I think their pricing was very fair considering the speed, quality and thoroughness of the service. I was very pleased. read more
