The CORE stands for the Center for Recreational Excellence…read more It's a workout facility in the City of Hobbs which is located in the southeast area of New Mexico. This place has a few pitfalls that keep me from not purchasing a yearly membership: First off, the wait to get to where you're going can be a bit much. The lines are a bit confusing as it is. They've since simplified it within the 9 months that I have lived here, but it could be even more simpler. Second, the clientele are less than appeasing. I tend to cause like a sailor, but not in public. It gets old. Amenities: + cardio equipment on the top floor + free weights, plate loaded, and selectorized machines on the bottom floor + gym (the floor is lined for basketball, volleyball, pickleball, four-square & shuffleboard) + indoor track + lap pool + locker room + personal trainer available + racquetball courts (2 available... reservations also available) + splash pad + spa (for ages 13 years & up) + sports programs (adult & youth) + studio & wellness classes + turf (soccer, flag football, ultimate frisbee, & golf) + water slides (4' & taller) My girls have participated in the volleyball classes here which were okay, but not very competitive. Just this past weekend (5/6/2023) I took the to the splash area for the first time area. Even though I declined to swim, I was still charged admission ($4 for the entire day). My 8 & 9-year-olds were charged $3 apiece for entry. In the splash area which is completely indoors, there are two sets of bleachers and multiple individual lounge chairs and side tables scattered all around. Free parking.

Wanting to venture out and see what else was out there I went to the Midland parks and recreation website and found a list of playgrounds in the area. We decided to go to Grafa Park today and WOW! It. Is. AWESOME!! The playground is HUUUUUUGE! There is so much to do on it: climb, slide, explore! It's super tall too (which, with a 18mo, I had to get up there with him because the openings for the ladders make me SUPER nervous.) But, hey, it was so much fun for me too!!! The slides are GREAT! There is also a huge walking track around the reservoir(???) I think that's what it is. My kids (and I) LOVED it! We brought a sub sandwich, chips and our drinks and had a picnic at one of the many picnic tables here. There are also plenty of benches and shade trees too! So glad we found this park! We can't wait to come back!!!!

And best of all, lots of SHADY TREES! We've found an evening walk here to be a nice way to wind down the day. It's very relaxing as there's often a cool breeze funneling under the trees and a high gate between the park and the road to protect from all the cars. Nestled enough within a neighborhood that it isn't dusty (locals know what I'm saying!) and full of people playing with their dogs and families until sun down, so it feels very safe. About the dogs - they've always been good boys and girls and we have had no problems at all with them. However, we have found a lot are actually off leash when they play so just an FYI, if it's not your thing.

Let's face it, this world runs on petroleum and this is one of the vast epicenters of the industry…read more The short of it, is Odessa is a working man's oil town. I worked in the oil industry in Houston early in my career. I thought I'd seen a lot but my trip down the freeway in Odessa one morning blew my mind. It lays out in plain site the incredible number and variety of businesses it requires to produce oil. One after the other,on both sides of the road for miles are support businesses. One goal,to produce oil. Heavy equipment,,specialized compressors, chemical Containers, Monstrous pumps, trucks....each its own business displaying vast inventory and selection to satisfy the needs of the oil industry. We all take for granted jumping in our cars, turning the key, and heading out. I wish everyone could see what I saw. It makes it all a little more real. I actually appreciate the privilege of what benefits are delivered to society by the oil field industry more, after seeing Odessa Texas.

There's trash all over the place and it feels like nobody cares about the town. The food is terrible--every place I tried had bland, gross food. Not a single decent restaurant in sight. It's boring and there's nothing to do. It's a miserable, unwelcoming place. Don't bother coming here unless you have no other choice.

There is a reason you will see lines out the door (be sure you make your reservation ONLINE and sign your waiver ahead of time!) but while this place is packed to the gills with fun activities, the true gem here is the OWNER! Not only is she welcoming CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIQUES (no, not you, Karen - I mean legit ways to make your experience better), she is CRAVING them! In fact, after going to hundreds of soft and grand openings as a Yelp Elite, I had only ONE suggestion for her. She not only was receptive to it - she immediately found a way to implement it on the spot! And her staff is just as incredible as she is! You'll notice by their youthful faces that they are students. However, you would never guess their young ages based on their professionalism and dedication to both safety and customer experience! Our little girl was determined to do the giant zipline and is usually our daredevil. However, when it became her turn, she was a puddle of fear! The staff went above and beyond to try to make her comfortable - even allowing ME to climb the tower opposite of her with a staff member to try to coax her across. To say they go above and beyond for every person's experience is to be completely honest. Why? Because I've seen it with my own eyes! And I've spent over EIGHT hours here this weekend watching specifically for it so that's a hard standard to rise up to and they not only met it - they far exceeded it!!!
