Jason Jamison has created a welcoming and fun atmosphere at Crossfit modern. I discovered this "box" just by accident driving past it in my neighborhood. It's sandwiched between a diner and a tailor shop, posted up like a humble Mecca for the most athletic to the just starting out folks (like myself). A frequently used excuse why people don't do CrossFit is because it's too hard on your body. It's true that if you do any of the movement wrong you'll probably pull a muscle but this gym is special. I can't say enough good stuff about Modern! I've been to several CrossFit gyms over the last 10 years, and this is one of the most friendly. The owners are hands on- dealing with the day to day operations and also coaching. They know their members, and care. There is an eclectic mix of athletes, from pregnant moms with kids at home, to high school athletes looking to get an edge, to elite competitors. I started CrossFit to cross train for outrigger paddling, and it has become a staple of my life. I haven't found any other workout that is as effective at keeping up my overall (general) fitness in such a reasonable amount of time. Just a couple days a week can lead to awesome gains, and with outside responsibilities, my time is valuable. The coaches are ALL respectful of our time, our individual goals, and our limitations. Not only do I feel like Modern is helping me maintain a healthy (ish ) lifestyle, but it is fun! I love the varied workouts (although I complain about back squat days), the sense of friendly competition, and peer support! I tried a few CrossFit gyms before I stumbled upon CrossFit Modern, but the genuine community is unlike any other gym I've been to. Within my first class where I didn't know anyone except meeting the coach for the intro, members would introduce themselves to me and encourage me when it came to the WOD we were doing. When the class was over and I went home, I was convinced before that I was going to join another gym I had attended before. But when it came down to it, there was something tugging at me that was telling me this was the gym I was supposed to join because of the sense of community that you experience when you walk through their doors. Now a month in, I feel like I've been a part of the family for long and even go do extra curriculars with other members on the weekends and look forward to working out and seeing the people I've come to know. Not all gyms are the same. I have had the fortune to go to good ones and some not so good ones. When you think about it, they all have the same equipment, follow some type of similar schedule and the like, so what really makes the gym are the people - both the coaching team and the other members. This place rocks both categories. I will be the first to admit that going to a new gym is intimidating and yeah I get a big ole pit in my stomach, but these guys seriously made me feel so welcome and put me at ease and made me feel like i could do anything. Still not sure how they do it, but there is a great sense of competition and support happening all at the same time - it's pretty often that it takes me the longest in class to finish a workout and the coaches stay with me the entire time (I like to say I am getting more workout for my money ;) All i would say is try it. I know for myself that the thought of going back to a conventional gym is inconceivable to me - I love the class environment and I get so much from the supportive cross fit family. read more

I'm a recent join to CF Modern. I used to go to a different CF gym but left because it was way too "clicky" for my taste. Everyone at Modern has been so friendly and welcoming. It's like night and day. The coaches are the best and are very involved. They take the time to make sure we understand the exercises and are doing them correctly. They have many classes available throughout the day. The quality of the equipment is legit and the whole place is CLEAN. I'm an original member from Crossfit Los Alamitos and decided to expand my membership to have access to both gyms because I wanted to expand my fitness routine and because I commute from work in LA straight to the gym near home I wanted to be able to have access to classes at different times (from Crossfit Los Alamitos) in the evening. I'll be honest, I was terrified to try crossfit in August of 2012. I thought my husband was crazy when he suggested it because from what I always saw on TV. Everyone looks so in shape, climbing ropes, lifting barbells, doing handstands... while i'm only in my early 30's I couldn't even imagine doing any of those things! But I took a shot at it and LOVED IT! I have been able to do things in crossfit that I never thought I could do. Sure, I still scale various workouts, but i've made so much progress over the last 15 months that I feel great about where I've gotten. When Crossfit Modern opened in Long Beach I was all for it. What sold me is that Crossfit Modern also offers some other great classes on top of Crossfit that members can participate in. CardioFit with Carrie kicks my butt, but it works on building my endurance. For those who are nervous keep in mind that anything can be scaled to fit your current needs, and it should be! We all start somewhere and you'll find like I did with proper coaching that you can make progress toward you goals quickly. Everybody who is a member is so encouraging, cheering each other on and Carrie is such a great coach! Yoga with Carmella is also wonderful! I have never done yoga before and Carmella knows how to take us through all the movements and teach us how to do every stretch and pose. My husband and I find it to be a great stress reliever AND when you're doing any sort of work out program (like Crossfit & CardioFit) it is SO important to stretch!! Crossfit Modern is great! It's clean, its friendly, it challenges you physically and mentally to reach your goals (something I struggled with alone in places like LA Fitness) & it's a great community to be a part of. The coaches--Dave, Jason, Jake and Carrie--all bring different strengths and knowledge to the table. They all take the time to learn the physical capabilities of each and every client that comes through the door. They will tell you when push yourself harder in a workout or lift and will tell you when to scale back to avoid injury, on an individual basis. Having a background in gymnastics and competitive cheerleading, I have had a lot of coaches in the past. Crossfit Modern has some of the best athletic coaches in terms of proper cues and explanation, attention to detail, safety, and overall knowledge of sport and physical fitness. The Crossfit Modern programming and coaching has allowed me to physically do things I could never imagine, and be the strongest I've ever been, despite coming from physically demanding sports. Every workout is a humbling experience, but leaves you feeling stronger than the day before. Offering other classes like Yoga and Cardiofit, Crossfit Modern gives you more for your money than most Crossfit gyms, and allows you to mix things up a bit. Lastly, the friendships I've made at Crossfit Modern are irreplaceable (cheesy, but true). I'm new to Crossfit and had not done much exercising at all in about 9-10 years . Only been going to this gym for a few weeks, but Crossfit Modern members and staff make you feel like part of the team and are very inviting to newbees like myself. I'm working exercise back in my life slowly, but with this place I can already tell I'll get back in great shape and see results. What really attracted me to this place was the fact that they offer a crossfit class, cardiofit class (boot camp style) and yoga class. They offer a very flexible schedule so everyone can make the classes. When I was looking at different crossfit places in the long beach area, none of them offered an additional class that specialized in just cardio training (cardiofit class), which is what I was looking for in the beginning to get my stamina up and cut some fat off. Then later work on the muscle building with crossfit. Carrie the main instructor for Cardiofit will kick your butt! I've taken a few Crossfit fundamentals classes so far and they are great (crossfit intro before you start the real deal). And this gym will give you your money's worth. There has not been one day where I wasn't sore as hell the next day after a class, because they kick your butt but also make it fun at the same time and you definitely won't be bored with the workouts. You should definitely come down to at least try a free cardiofit or crossfit fundamentals class and see what you think. I highly recommend this place. read more
