Burntown Fitness - Wednesday Vibes: Time for some POWER PULLS! Let's finish this week off feeling empowered!

Recently I made the fearless decision to change my career path…read more In order to begin this path, I had a deadline to meet for a physical ability test. With little gym training, I had to search for a personal trainer and fast! I found Burntown Fitness! Personal trainers Kisar and Traci have the expertise and patience to get you through your challenge, whatever that may be. In less than 3 months, I successfully completed the physical ability test exceeding minimum qualifications, and was able to be tested remotely at their facility. I have interviews lined-up in law enforcement! I am beyond grateful!

I was looking for a gym that was close to my house, and that had early morning sessions to fit my schedule. What I didn't expect is an amazing facility, with a fantastic training staff, an owner who cares about every single one of his clients on a personal level, and a clientele with that get-it-done attitude to keep me motivated. I am the kind of person that needs a trainer to tell me what to do, to push my limits, and take an interest in my health and fitness goals. I feel like Kisar (the owner) is always trying to improve the classes by bringing in new and fresh ideas to the table, which is great, considering I really enjoy challenges. And if you work out with him, be prepared to get REKT. That guy pushes you to your limits, every time!! Burntown also has nutrition programs to help you kick start your journey. And the trainers... can't be spoken about highly enough. Each one is FANTASTIC and adds their own flavor and style to their classes (s/o to Emily who has a booming/motivating voice, who takes time to correct my form and lets me know if something looks to easy for me). I love a gym that takes time to learn about each members goals, and help them achieve them. And I love a great community that supports one another, and you get that here with Burntown!

My highest recommendation for this gym, and this is not my first rodeo. I've belonged to the…read morecorporate gyms at Nike and Adidas as well as smaller boutique ones and big national chains, so I know a good thing when I see it. If you're shopping around for one to try, especially now as part of a New Year's resolution plan, put this place at the top of your list. Here are my favorite things about this place: 1. Nice welcoming vibe. You will be greeted by name every time. There's a friendly spirit about the place. They decorate for holidays. They make it easy with their "Try us out for $30" trial (any three group classes but a 1:1 trainer session). Each quarter they ask people what other classes they might like to see added. 2. Fantastic variety of workout options, from 6am to 6pm. So many different small group workout class options every week plus optional drop-in open gym for those who want to do their solo thing (the gym posts videos on their Instagram of that week's open gym suggested workout) plus lot of choices for 1:1 personal trainers. 3. Very clean and super organized. You know how many gyms smell like a men's locker room, or with stuff scattered about? This is the opposite of that. Everyone uses the provided spray bottles to clean things off and they've got a whole wall of hand washing stations. They've even got plants and custom wall murals. 4. Excellent instructors. Some classes have just a few people, others can be closer to 15. Either way, the trainers are very engaged throughout, not just chirping, "Keep it up! Looking strong!" type stuff but actually helping each person with correct form, or bringing over a different weight, or spotting when needed. None of them play favorites nor are ever checking their email on their phone. 5. Reasonable rates. Depending how you structure yours, I think it's about $20 per group class and/or $90 per 50-min 1:1 personal trainer. Not once have I felt pressured via any upselling. Instead, various people at the front desk have said, "Actually, if you do it this way, you can save even more on that..." 6. Good energy. The trainers do a nice job with their playlists on the iPad and clearly enjoy their job. I especially like that they keep the banter light and no one is ever talking about, say, political topics. Also nice that it's co-ed. For those wondering, gender-wise the instructors/trainers skew female (I think 14 are women and 4 are men), as do the small group classes (if a dozen people sign up, three or four are usually men). 7. Portland crowd. This isn't LA where you look around the room and feel either ugly or under-dressed or probably both. Nor is it the NYC Equinox tribe where people are looking to pick up a date or scoff if you don't know what Amagansett is. It's very much "come as you are" because it's about people each having their own reason for being here. You don't need to go buy a new outfit or cut some weight before coming here. Lots of body shapes, lots of ages. 8. Community spirit. If you're looking to just drop in, get your pump in and get out, easily done. But if you're looking for something more, they do a nice job with additional occasional offerings like a summer camping trip, Thanksgiving potluck, yoga w/ live acoustic tunes, bringing in a guy from Notre Dame crew team to show proper form on rowing machines, etc. 9. Great customer service. If you've got a question, they answer it immediately, however you prefer: onsite, text, email, phone. No one here ever tells you, "I don't know" or "I'll have to check with my manager" like they do elsewhere. 10. Supportive financially. If you need to take an extended break of a few weeks or few months for any personal reason, they're happy to put things on pause. If you lost your job and life is feeling heavy, they work with you to find a solution so that you don't have to cut gym time from your routine. You get the idea. I'll stop now. Every neighborhood could use a place like this, where there are no cliques and people can be as introverted or as social as they want and it's all good.

Focusing on personal fitness goals to make you the strongest person you can be. Every one here is at different fitness levels. All strengths and sizes. Way more diversity from other places I have been. I like that there doesn't feel like competition between anyone but yourself. You set your pace. You set your goals. Etc. Each day is different. Warm-ups start the same. Every day the first 8 min are so are the same routine. I like to play follow the leader for this part :) I'm still new but everyone is super friendly and helpful if you miss a beat. Different rounds of stations are set-up so for maybe ten minutes you do three or 4 rounds of different things and then you move onto something else. Stretching is incorporated into each day especially focusing on those muscles you will use for the day. The first two weeks are $20!!! So no reason to not at least give it a try? I signed up for 3X A WEEK for $150 a month. I never get bored and the people here make me want to keep coming back! They even have some free events on the weekends. This Sunday is a snow showing trip! Woot woot!

I was worried because I didn't know what to expect, but it was fun... And wow, what a great work out! I was struggling to keep up, but you can basically go at your own pace if it's too fast for you. The instructor was nice and helped explain things to me when I was confused on certain workouts. No one in the class made me feel awkward or uncomfortable for not knowing exactly what to do at times. Loved the class. Loved the music. Loved the staff. I was even given a free smoothie on my way out!

Blaine (may have misspelled) was vivacious, funny and had an inherent, authentic warmth that made me feel like an absolute queen. Oh yeah, and he did this at 5AM! If I lived in Portland, I would have joined as a membet on the spot just to experience that energy! After class, he had a complimentary make-your-own cold brew station set up with the absolute BEST lineup (nugget ice, sugar free creamers and vanilla syrup). 100/10!! The instructor, Janelle was an absolute boss! I travel for work, and hit Barry's locations across the US. To be clear, every Barry's instructor I've ever had is exceptional, however Janelle was a standout. She mentally prepared the class for what was coming (ex how many sprints, how many inclines, how long, and counted it down for the entire class). I appreciated that so that I could get through the hardest times and understand how to pace. This was my favorite Barry's experience to date. Thank you!
