Returning to Barry's, it felt like I never even left. The workouts are the same: HOT, HARD, and SWEATY. My home gyms are in NYC, Hoboken and Houston. First time checking out the Portland location and just as I anticipated the workout was consistent with any other Barry's. Took a class with Tony F. and he was great. The red room layout here was very well thought out. Front desk staff was friendly and gave me a quick tour since it was my first time at this location. If you want a kick-a** workout, can't ever go wrong with Barry's.

I was worried because I didn't know what to expect, but it was fun... And wow, what a great work out! I was struggling to keep up, but you can basically go at your own pace if it's too fast for you. The instructor was nice and helped explain things to me when I was confused on certain workouts. No one in the class made me feel awkward or uncomfortable for not knowing exactly what to do at times. Loved the class. Loved the music. Loved the staff. I was even given a free smoothie on my way out!

This girl will go above and beyond to support what you need and answer questions. GIVE THIS GIRL A RAISE! The pool is always clean and ready to go, while there's no hot tub the Women's sauna is a pretty good size and remains clean and smelling good. The equipment is generally nicer and more maintained than surrounding LA fitnesses and the comped parking is SO appreciated! For folks new to LA fitness, I would avoid entering any GRIP raffles for personal training if you're familiar with your own body's way of working out or have a strong sense of athleticism. They sell a little too hard, instead of prioritizing what you're needing in a PT. Just my two sense as someone who has worked with many. They may be good for brand new gym joiners or folks who do not have a ton of athletic experience. Thanks LA Fitness Northrup (and thank you Tricia) for a 5 star experience nearly every single time.

The only breeze you feel upstairs is when someone walks past you. Otherwise, the air is stale and stagnant. The responses from management have varied, beginning with, "Oh, it's not working?" Then, "We know about it." Good, but are you working to fix it? "We're waiting on the vendor." For six years? My favorite response: "Well, it's hot outside." Isn't that what an HVAC system is for? No one expects a workout to be comfortable, but you should be sweating from the effort, not the environment.

This includes constant equipment slamming, taking up machines they are not even using, and excessive grunting. I understand that some noise is normal, but when it happens every set of every exercise, to the point where I can hear it through my headphones, it becomes a real issue. When I bring this to the front desk, they usually just shrug and say they will talk to him, but nothing ever changes. If you are considering joining and plan to work out on weekday evenings, I would look elsewhere. Some people never grow out of high school behavior, and it really shows at this gym.

Out of 5 elliptical machines, only one was not broken/wobbly 2. Want to wipe that machine down? Look elsewhere my friend, there was no paper towels upstairs 3. Even the clock upstairs (which is digital) was I shit you not, broken 4. 2 of the showers in the guys locker room It's a bummer because it used to be a pretty nice gym and the staff (of whom there wasn't much of) are friendly and probably doing their best. If you're doing free weights, this place is still a solid choice, but if you're looking to do cardio or looking for a group class (the class schedule keeps getting smaller and smaller), I'd probably look someplace else

Always leave class feeling stronger and in a better mood; definitely keep coming back for their sessions when I'm in town! The workout itself? No joke. Expect to shake, sweat, and question your life choices halfway through--in the best way possible . I left feeling stronger and accomplished every time. The studio is clean, modern, and has that motivating energy the moment you walk in. Instructors pay close attention to form, which makes the workout feel both challenging and safe.
