The instructor was nice and helped explain things to me when I was confused on certain workouts. No one in the class made me feel awkward or uncomfortable for not knowing exactly what to do at times. The instructor, Janelle was an absolute boss! I travel for work, and hit Barry's locations across the US. To be clear, every Barry's instructor I've ever had is exceptional, however Janelle was a standout. She mentally prepared the class for what was coming (ex how many sprints, how many inclines, how long, and counted it down for the entire class). I appreciated that so that I could get through the hardest times and understand how to pace. This was my favorite Barry's experience to date. Thank you!

The House is not a gym, it's a group of coaches and trainers, who teach the correct body position, the reason behind it (helps me remember if I know the why) and how much to lift, based on where I am. The classes are small, it's not a "gym" with tv, lockers and roid heads or dudes trying to look at your butt (not mine). It's a group of folks dedicated to their health, the longevity, the long game is the heart of it. Exercise is not a fad, you do it and then you are done. This is what The House is great at. They are looking for you to learn the reasons you do it, how to pace it, how to develop, track and grow. Concrete example, in March, they had us test 1 perfect rep at the heaviest weight. If I can do a deadlift with 50lbs, that becomes my max. Now when I am working out and the rep 4-6x at 50% of max, I know I am working out with 25lbs. Now I have a goal to increase, and keep building. Education is an important component, not just lifting. As a woman, I never feel uncomfortable in this environment. 3 classes per week = 12x per month at $155? You cannot find a better deal in the Portland area.

I'd been eyeing this gym last year but wasn't motivated enough. I then severely injured my meniscus and as a queer disabled woman I felt concerned about my health trajectory. My progress has been phenomenal and so many things in my life have gotten easier. I'm slowly easing off the crutches and feel confident I can and will move forward but will also be able to handle inevitable life setbacks. Gina and her team treat you like a whole person - I needed a lot of accommodations due to multiple disabilities and problem issues like hypermobility, joint dislocations, migraines, nerve pain in my shoulders and hips, and more. We've worked through them all and I'm so grateful I made this choice and to Gina and Joe for their constant encouragement and what actually feels like love. I'll add this gym does rehab work like with me but other things too like elite athlete work, expectant mums, post partum folks, and some other specialities too. Highly highly recommend.

They have a 90 day onboarding program where you can try their group classes and have 24/hr access to the gym to work out and see if they are a great fit. After the 90 days, there are a few different programs to go into based on your goals. The owners are patient and available and will check in with you along the way in your 90 days to help you understand their programs and what they offer. After that, they will listen to your feedback and suggest other programs to continue. I have not been to the gym in over 7 years and this year was time to get back into it and become a better version of myself. The first couple times I went, I was greeted warmly and one person even said, "glad you're here", which made me feel welcome. I looked at all of the gyms in and around Newberg and Rebuilt, which is on the upper end of gym fees, seemed like the gym to start with. I met with the owner prior to choosing a program and they explained their program. They have different options for different programs and you're paying for their skill, the community, and the comradery. The group coaches remember you from week to week and encourage you to work that little extra. The front desk staff is always really nice, and the trainers seem awesome overall. I can definitely recommend mine, Will. He's knowledgeable, astute, goal-focused, and encouraging. It also feels like a genuinely respectful space. I haven't seen anyone leering or acting like a jerk - quite the opposite. And people are good about reracking weights and wiping down equipment. Parking can be a little bit of a situation at times, and people sometimes seem to wait around for spots for some reason, but there's actually plenty of parking diagonally across the street in the garage. Street parking is also often free or just a couple of bucks, so it's very manageable once you know the options. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this spot. Great vibe, great trainers, and solid equipment. There's even a hot tub in the locker room. It's not a polished, spa-looking place, but honestly that's part of the charm. I'd much rather deadlift somewhere with personality than in a lifeless beige box.
