I am new to CrossFit, and have been doing it now for about 3 months. My experience has been fantastic. My wife has done CrossFit on and off for several years as we have moved around. Upon moving to STL, my wife looked at the CrossFit gyms near us and joined CrossFit Ballwin. I had been hesitant to join CrossFit for a number of reasons. Among them, I have a back injury. The idea of lifting weights or using barbells did not appeal to me whatsoever. Also, I cannot stand the meathead/Bro environment. After 5 or 6 months of my wife going to CrossFit Ballwin, and talking to me about it at home, I decided that I'd give it a try. Also, my existing workout program seemed to be losing its effectiveness. I'm over 40. My body is changing, my metabolism is changing, my joints are aging, and so on. So, I decided to try a change. From the very start, what they tell us is "Listen to your body" and "Focus on your form first". This is exactly the thing I wanted to hear. They spend a lot of time focusing on your form, with little or no weight, which is the intelligent thing to do. The facility itself is clean, well appointed, and in a convenient part of town. The coaches are excellent. Trent, the owner, is very experienced, extremely knowledgeable, and encouraging. And he has a great staff of coaches with a diverse set of backgrounds and education. The value is in the variety. People learn differently, and they all have different approaches, analogies, demonstrations, and motivational and educational techniques. The results I have seen in myself, even after just 3 months, are extremely motivating. I am not "an athlete" per se. My objective is to live a long, healthy life. I want to have a strong core that helps with my back problems. I want to have good cardiovascular health. I want to have the flexibility and mobility to keep up with my kids. I am getting more than my money's worth in this area. The thing that probably keeps me going back as much as anything, however, are the other people who attend. We range in ages and sizes and ability levels from one end of the spectrum to the other. But there are ZERO egos. There is nothing but encouragement, and good energy. People smile at each other. People want to see each other succeed. And everyone knows, when you start CrossFit, it doesn't matter who you are, you start at the beginning. The level of support and positivity I have experienced have truly been exceptional. If you are looking to improve your health, improve your quality of life, and have a good time doing it, you should come. This box is it. Just stop looking and wavering because you won't find a place better than this. I had a horrible crossfit experience a few years ago, bad coaching and atmosphere and fulfilled every bad crossfit stereotype. But I loved the workouts. So I did some research and stalked this place for a couple of weeks and the atmosphere seemed genuine. I wanted to find a place that would make me feel comfortable because I was a bit intimidated to return to crossfit. I was totally impressed from day 1. Trent is dedicated. He takes pride in his business and you can tell by how clean and organized it is. Moreover, he is adamant about form. This is where he won me over. During on-ramp he was relentless about form and went so far as to show me videos and draw pretty pictures. He does one on one or two on one for the first 4 sessions to make sure you're comfortable and have a clear understanding of the way your own body moves and how it should move. Aside from Trent, Alex, another coach, is super encouraging. I was sidelined by the flu and since I'm still new I was intimidated going back. He was awesome. Checked my form, fist bumped me, and he's just genuinely sweet. I've met a couple of the other coaches in passing and they seem just as friendly and dedicated. Plus Alex produces some pretty kick ass videos for their Facebook that hooked me even before I joined. As for the members, I felt right at home. Everyone is so welcoming and there are all types of people. Even after a grueling work out or even during it, people smile at each other. I don't think egos would fit in there anyway. As a 41 y.o. woman who used to lift then sacked out for 10 months, I was wary about crossfit but this place is where you go to un-learn all your bad lifting habits, un-learn bad posture, and learn to move properly. It is about the same price as other boxes but the personal attention is actually less expensive than a kid at a big box gym who got an online certification walking you through a lame ass workout. The owners welcome you and stay in touch because of their caring and dedication to their members. If you don't show up for a week you will hear about it because they care amout my succeeding in reaching my fitness and health goals. I have joined so many gyms and tried working with so many different trainers but Trent and Crossfit Ballwin are by far my favorite! The idea of Crossfit had always intrigued me but I thought that I would never be able to do it since I was overwieght. I decided to suck it up and try a one-on-one class. I was so nervous, I thought I was going to throw up before walking into the gym. After a few minutes of talking with Trent (who is the head coach and owner), we got to work. Trent put me through a typical workout but also scaled it back to my ability. He focused on form and technique but definitely challenged me. That first workout was almost 3 months ago....and I keep going back for more! This gym has become like a second family to me. The workouts are challenging but can be done at any fitness level. The people at the gym are so supportive and accepting. I used to dread working out and going to the gym but since finding Crossfit Ballwin, my mentality has changed! I think I'm addicted! The idea of Crossfit can be very intimidating and walking into other Crossfit gyms, you may still feel that way; however I cannot stress enough how that is NOT the case here. However when you walk into the box and get a REAL COACH, someone who cares about your health and safety....its easy to see why the gym continues to grow. The family and non judgmental atmosphere is perfect for anyone at any level of fitness....young or old...in shape or out of shape....looking to compete or just increase your quality of life.....and athlete or non athlete. I thought my first CrossFit box in Springfield, MO had spoiled me. After doing CrossFit for a couple of years, I moved from 417 to OKC in 2012. I tried every box there and could not find the right one for me; the vibe was off or the coaching was sub-par, or it was too competitive. With that, I gave up on CrossFit for 4 years while in OKC. I had a very stressful job in OKC and my physical and mental health had declined, so when I moved to STL I was determined to get back on track. I just happen to live a few miles from CFB so I thought I would give them a shot. Although my expectations were low due to recent experiences, I was more than happy with the outcome. CFB is the community I was looking for. There is something for everyone; whether you are competitive, recovering from injury/surgery, never lifted a bar in your life, getting back to it after a baby, need accountability, or just fighting the aging process. Trent is dedicated to his members and shows it with one-on-one attention and attention to the needs and goals of his members. Each coach brings a little something different with their approach and each have helped me improve a number of movements. This box is definitely worth a drop-in if you are visiting the area. What has Crossfit Ballwin done for me? To start with that question, it takes alot of explaining. I started at Crossfit Ballwin, June 24, 2014, after a 7 minute AMRAP (as many reps as possible) I think of kettlebell swings, rowing, and deadlifts. I dont quite remember because so much has happened since then. Before I did that I sat down and talked with Coach/Owner Trenton Campbell, We talked about what my goals where, how I heard about Crossfit, and why I had chosen crossfit. Now at that time I was at my heaviest at 268 pounds, standing 5 foot 3.5 inches, I was at an all time low struggling with exercise and nutrition. After the AMRAP and talk, I handed him my card to begin my journey. I could say the rest is history, because well it is,(and it is a pretty darn good history.) but I want to tell you how this almost 1 year journey has changed me for the better. I have always been the "big girl", even as child. I have struggled with physical activity and really eating right. Trenton is one of the biggest motivators I have ever met, and he has created a community, with such a family feel, that you are never going to be alone if and when you would choose to start your journey here. There are all types of fitness levels at this gym, but they all have the same goal, Do your very best all the time and do not give up. When I started here I couldnt squat for the life of me, not at all, and now, now I can get the squat depth any one person is suppose to have. I was also terrified of weights and weight lifting, I've gone my whole life with the " if I lift weights, as a woman, I will get big and bulky." Let me be the first and certainly not the last to tell you, that has zero truth to it. So I could barely lift weights when I started, and now I have not only made phenomenal gains, I have competed in a powerlifiting (non sanctioned) meet and did not finish dead last. I went from not being able to hardly lift to a 280# deadlift, 240# back squat, 110# shoulder press. Next I want to move on to the people of this gym, the people that make you want to come back for more and more. Everyone is so welcoming and inclusive, the friends that I have made in this gym are truly life long friends. They pick you up and push when you think you have no more to give. I have had several times that I was doing a metcon (the actual work out after the warm up and strength and skill) and everyone finished and I was still going, and they got down on the floor and continued to go with me until I finished, even when they did not have to. This place has done amazing things for me, I went from on and off fitness ventures, and not very excited to go to the gym, and now I am not only excited to go to the gym, I actually try to make my work schedule coincide with the most days I can go to the gym, which is anywhere from 2- 4 days a week. Now for nutrition, I have quite conquered that, its a lot harder than most people think, but with the continued support of my friends, and my wonderful friend and Coach Trent, I will get that handled. I have rambled quite a bit but I dont know how to make anything I say about this place short, because well I just dont think that it is possible. Yes, it is that amazing. I can not wait to see how this gym grows and expands and meet all the new people that walk through the door. It truly doesn't matter what your fitness level is, because everything can be modified to your skill level, this I do know first hand. What the slogan for this business couldnt be anymore true, a fitness driven community. I have come such a long way, and I have a long way to go, but I have the drive and determination and the confidence I have gained from Crossfit ballwin to get me there. I recently was in St. Louis and visited this gym because my little sister goes here. I have been doing CROSSFIT for about 4 years now and have been to many gyms. The owner and coach, Trent was so welcoming and nice the moment I entered. The environment is really relaxed and friendly and not he least bit intimidating but also gives you structure so you know what to do and what you will be doing. You can tell he really cares about his clients and wants them to understand the movements and are safe before they add weight. This is extremely important to me especially knowing my sister is there. I would definitely recommend this gym to anyone in the area looking for a good workout and awesome crossfit gym! read more
