I joined CrossFit 516 exactly one year ago, and I've gained so much more than I expected. After feeling like I had reached the limit of what I could achieve on my own at a chain gym, I joined Crossfit516 after doing research into CF. After training at CrossFit 516 for the past 12 months, I'm confident it was the right decision. Many members have been here for over a decade, and it's not uncommon to meet people who have left other CrossFit locations to train here. One of the best parts for newcomers is the intro program, which is perfect for easing into the workouts. The coaches are experts and genuinely care about your progress. The workouts are intense but scalable, making them accessible to all fitness levels. I joined at 39, and there are members younger and older, so neither your age nor current fitness level should hold you back from checking out CrossFit516. One-on-one coaching is available, and training with Coach Ellen has been one of the best decisions I've made (and I've made a lot of great decisions). Initially, I planned to do a few sessions to learn more about Olympic lifting, avoid bad habits, and perform better in class, but I'm going into week 24 and it's far exceeded the goals and expectations I initially set. It's rare to get more out of something than you hope for, but that has defined my experience here. There's always something new to learn in CrossFit, and it's also a lot of fun. I have been attending Crossfit 516 for the last year now. I'll try to make my review as objective as possible because after a year I have become friends with the people who run this gym. Also, since this is my first Crossfit gym I like it the most. The trainer/owners Tyler and Logan are excellent. They are knowledgeable, attentive and able to meet the demands of their clients. Now, don't get me wrong, they won't let you quit because you want to and they don't let you skip out on any of the fundamental movements. The beauty of Crossfit is that you engage in every activity. Gymnastics, Bodyweight, Olympic lifts, Cardio, Flexibility are all a part of it. The work out of the day is constantly varied, so you rarely do the same workout. The new trainer Sara is excellent, she is very determined and she commands the class well. So please, even though you hear loud weights banging and atlas stones crashes this is not a male centric gym. There are many women who are bored of the usual gyms who come to Crossfit and see results. No matter what shape you are in, this is a great place to start your fitness career. The environment is very motivating and no one lets you quit. This is common amongst many Crossfit gyms and I have been to seven different gyms now. But what stands out about Crossfit 516 is that we have really developed a family here. Everyone is your friend from the moment you come and in and the people. Also Tyler and Logan command a vision of expanding their space and giving everyone the best experience possible. Having had an extensive fitness background but never having experienced CrossFit, I was bit intimidated by what I had seen and heard from the general public. Being that I am a person who needs to experience things for themselves, I decided to see what it was all about. And I'm certainly glad that I did. Both the trainers and the members at CrossFit 516 have opened my eyes to an extraordinary new way of building physical and mental fitness. All of the trainers whom I have interacted with have been very knowledgeable about all aspects of anatomy and physiology as well as kinesiology. They are able to adapt any aspect of the work out for all fitness levels. Whether you are brand-new or an experienced veteran, they are able to modify and adapt all aspects to your individual needs. The group of individuals who are present at 6 AM, which is the class I regularly attend, are very friendly and welcoming and are extremely helpful in assisting you to acclimate to your surrounding environment. While the physical gym is located in an industrial area of Mineola, the interior is well appointed with all of the necessary equipment for all fitness levels. There are two bathrooms and showers in the event that you need to shower and dress immediately after the workout. Parking is ample especially at 6 AM and there is also a vending machine that dispenses water and other sports drinks. I was never in great shape, played some high school sports, hit the gym every now and again. This lifestyle lasted into my very early 20's when life started to happen; career, marriage, house, children etc..... 15 years later I'm a couch potato unable to keep up with my 3 kids. Prior to walking into 516, I was skeptical of trying Crossfit. Anyway, nearly three years later I don't even remember why and am glad I decided to give it a try. Historically, my workouts would get tiresome and it was a lot of work to plan them to ensure they were covering all the bases. I went the personal trainer route and that was great but got really expensive. Now I just show up and hit the workout that has been programmed for me, which is always more challenging than anything I would do myself. Moreover, Tyler and the coaching team, as well as the other members are there to challenge, support and encourage one another. It's easy to discount this aspect but if it were for absent, I likely wouldn't make it through most of the workouts. There is something about suffering through together (and you will at times suffer), that creates a bond. This is my first Crossfit gym and I picked a good one to start with, i started about a year ago. The environment is very friendly but competitive enough for me to get a good workout without kicking myself in the ass when i fail. Tyler is the owner and he is very friendly, knowledgeable and dedicated to showing you the proper movements and keeping you safe while pushing you to be better than your old self. He keeps his classes lighthearted but knows how to push those who need a little or a lot of encouragement without being intimidating or a lunk. I came to this gym as a couch potato, and now I'm a couch potato with a smaller gut that can run 2 miles without passing out anymore. They offer several more levels of classes for those who are looking for more challenges including: combat courses, a level 2 program, HIIT classes for the ladies, and the gut wrenching "OVERFLOW PROGRAM" for the more elite, and don't forget the kids, they have a Crossfit Kids program as well. In house competitions and challenges like the 'Fittest loser', and 'Paleo Challenge' keep things fresh and keep my fitness and weight in a continuous state of improvement. I used to drag my feet to get myself to the old 24hr gyms, now I move things around in my schedule to make time to go. I look forward to going to the gym because the environment is conducive to keeping me moving. Their drop in policy is pretty lax and its always fun to see people from different boxes come in and find out where their from. Yelp labels 5 stars as "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" and when I say Crossfit 516 really is as good as it gets, I mean it. I was a competitive athlete in high school, and by the luck of the draw wound up at 516 after learning about it from a 5k race. Never would I have ended up there on my own, but my lucky stars were watching out for me! Every coach is experienced, competent and knowledgeable in what they do with multiple certifications. Not only are they trustworthy, but they are friendly, as is everyone in the gym. I have made my best friends at 516 and I truly believe that our community here is the closest group of "exercise enthusiasts" than at any gym in any corner of the world; I love crossfit in itself but my friends here are always what keep me coming back. This is not just a gym. When I joined Crossfit516 about a year and a half ago, I didn't realize how close the members were. Also, the coaches and members are like a family. All members have the same goal: get fit and healthy and be a great support for their peers. The coaches are all amazing and I felt safe learning and trying new things. It's nice to have a coach every time you workout to make sure you are getting the most out of each workout. I was your typical globo gym guy in my 20's. Chest on Monday , back on Tuesday, arms we'd,and maybe some legs if felt like it. As I got older, I got lazier and lost motivation to go to the gym. It just got worse when I had my kids. I barely ever went. I wanted to get back into shape but didn't know how to jump start the motor again. One of my best friends Brian told me about 516. I went to an intro class and was immediately hooked. Despite being a distance from my home, I make it a point to wake up early just to get to the 6am class. If I don't get there, I feel like my day is not complete. I'm probably in the best shape of my life all thanks to Tyler and his team. What 516 provides is more than just a workout routine. I have experience different forms of martial arts and fitness before but never found a good match for myself in terms of intensity, verity, atmosphere inside and good trainers. After more than year coming to CrossFit516 I can that I found a perfect fit. Highly recommend for everyone no matter age and physical condition. I found Crossfit 516 in the Spring of 2014 when I was looking for a new challenging fitness regimen to try out. Since I had previously been doing functional fitness training on my own for long sessions, I was skeptical at first that such a short workout could really be effective. On my first day dropping in at 516 I was overwhelmed with how much energy there was in the gym and how much fun all the members were having, and I signed up. I quickly was sold on the effectiveness of the program, the emphasis placed on technique, and most importantly the awesome coaches! Tyler is a fun and inspiring personality as are all of the other coaches. Through their encouragement and programming I've been able to lift weight I'd never thought possible, while at the same time leaning out. Beyond my personal experience, I've seen other members make even more incredible physical transformations. There are many closer CF gyms to me but there's really no reason to ever look elsewhere.
