Yelp Fam! If you are looking for oiled peanuts I have just the place for you! So I went home one weekend, and my family started talking about this place called "Cromer's." Now, mind you, I had never heard of this place before, but they spoke highly of it. All I knew was that they mentioned Cromer's sold "boiled peanuts," and I was sold! If you know anything about me, while I don't eat boiled peanuts often due to the sodium, I absolutely love them--it's definitely a southern thing. Little did my family tell me that Cromer's also sells popcorn, and not just any popcorn--so many different flavors in small and extra-large bags! They also have other items like hot dogs, penny candy, BBQ sauce, and little trinkets for events. Let's just say we left Cromer's with several items. I got two bags of boiled peanuts--I think they were 24 oz. bags. I also ended up getting Cajun popcorn and white cheddar popcorn. My family grabbed some other fun flavors. My sister had one that reminded me of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but I don't remember the exact flavor. We even picked up a few of their glass bottle sodas (so nostalgic) and tried their hot dogs. Man, they were good! You've got to get them "all the way" with chili, onions, and fries--talk about good eating. I make it a point to stop by whenever I'm in the mood for popcorn or boiled peanuts. And if we're in the mood for a hot dog, we know Cromer's won't disappoint. They also have a beautiful mural on the side of the wall, so if you enjoy taking pictures, it's a great spot to snap a few. Great staff, great service. Perfect place to grab delicious boiled peanuts! My only knock was that the popcorn is full of artificial flavors and food coloring which is not good for health. I would return for the peanuts and the cotton candy samples were very interesting flavors such as chocolate and mint. I would suggest they revisit thier popcorn recipes for more natural and healthy coloring and flavors. read more

Stopping at Cromer's on our summer road trip has always been a tradition in our family. We first started coming about 20 years ago (old location) and have always been loyal customers. Our favorite items are the New Crop Boiled Peanuts and their fresh popped Popcorn. Of course, we always grab a soda or two to go with our peanuts and who can resist their bulk candy selections?! Unfortunately, lately we seem to always be stopping by when they are out of boiled peanuts... So I would *STRONGLY* advise that you call ahead if you have something (specifically boiled peanuts!) you especially want. For us, it was a bit of a disappointment... Cromer's is such a great place and a real cornerstone to our community in Columbia, SC. The prepared popcorn with the flavors is excellent and changes up constantly! The popcorn is always fresh from the machine and corn dogs/fries/lemonade are all truly exceptional. But honestly the best part of cromer's is the service, that is exceptional. The two young women that were working on Saturday are very kind and make me feel great about supporting this business! They talk to customers and do a great job of fostering a community relationship. A great bag of boiled peanuts at a baseball game or on a fishing trip is a thing of beauty. The peanuts here remind me of the trips me and my grandad use to take years ago while driving the country side. I'm very fond of the new crop boiled peanuts they cost a little more but worth every penny. A nice cold bottle of ginger ale goes well while eating the caviar of the south. I love Cromer's, guaranteed worst in town! I first came here four or five years ago when it was located on the corner of Huger and Laurel. I came for the One Million Cups (Columbia entrepreneurial events) on Tuesdays and stayed for the coffee, snacks and pleasant environment. My life has changed in many ways since then, but I still go back for giant trash-sized bags of popcorn for my kid's school and parties. We love all the fun snacks, gift bags, and festive treats as well as the classic style of Cromer's. "Guaranteed worst in town" is such a humble statement. I honestly couldn't remember when the last time it was I visited Cromer's, but I knew I wanted to make it here for popcorn with some southern charm. There's a cafe onsite for some simple coffee and specialty drinks. Free wifi is available if you feel like hanging out. We purchases one (1) 4oz. bag of "cheesy sweet monkey munch," one (1) 3oz. bag of "pecan double coated caramel corn," and two (2) 20oz. cups of coffee. I should have drunk my coffee slowly to go with the popcorn because they were on the much sweeter side. Well, many southerners would say "the sweeter the better." I won't contest. It's definitely not the worst; I want Cromer's and many other local businesses to continue to prosper and thrive. I remember Cromer's from my childhood...except I remember it differently. I remember going to pick out candy for my birthday parties along with bags and bags of popcorn. In my four year old mind, there were rows and rows of candy. But my memory must be failing me. I wanted to share my memories of sugar and salt with my boys. We headed over late morning on Tuesday. There were a few patrons but it wasn't busy. There were about 6 barrels of candy. Maybe being 4 back in the day made it seem like 100s. You purchase the candy by weight (like Mast general). There is a wall devoted to prebagged popcorns, with size ranging from 4.39 bag and up. There are smaller bags of flavored popcorn in the 2.49 range. At the counter you can order food, sno comes, etc. While the shop wasn't how I remembered it as a child it still had "the worst" boiled peanuts-Mr Cromer's slogan (which I liked) and plenty of popcorn to satisfy whichever flavor you crave; whether no salt, traditional, white cheddar, caramel, USC colors, confetti colors, etc. My kiddos were not nearly as impressed with the in store experience as I was a kiddo. But they devoured the popcorn. The customer service was stellar and the shop was very clean. I'll be back, just sans kids. read more

Would have given them 2 stars last year due to several batches purchased lacked flair and stuck in the shell... not what you want in a boiled peanut... but recent trips have basemen excellent results. I want to have a circus. Like, literally, I want to create a circus and buy everything from here. I also want to eat everything from here. While I found out I was definitely not a fan of boiled nuts (um, no thanks) I was a fan of the popcorn! But what you think begins and ends with a store full of popcorn and nuts, you look towards the back and there's a coffee shop with a full espresso bar and food! I enjoyed a tasty pecan latte, which the barista made less sweet for me by request (good thing, because it was on my higher end of the sweet tolerance level). Cromer's is a Columbia institution! I remember going to the Dutch Square store when I was a child to see the monkeys. That's right... the store had adorable monkeys. While the monkeys are gone, the store is cooler than ever. Not only do they have all the party supplies you could need to throw a fabulous shin dig but they also have delicious treats - many different kinds of popcorn, peanut brittle, local cookies and spreads, and don't forget the boiled peanuts - "Guaranteed Worst In Town!" They've also added the Cromer's Cafe which serves up sandwiches and super yum coffee beverages. I recommend the peppermint latte! They also have a Shrimp and Grits special on Fridays so don't miss out on that. I know I'll be back again soon. Customer service was terrible. Never looked or acknowledged my presence. The "staff" continued having a conversation as if they were the only people there. When I attempted to pay with my mobile wallet the young man said "we don't have Apple Pay like Walmart". I'm slightly confused because that has nothing to do with the customer not being able to make a purchase. I did not think it was fair to make uneducated and loud statements because your brand has opted to not have mobile payments so I advised him Walmart wouldn't have Apple Pay because they Walmart pay, he then says proceeds to go back and forth about why Mobile pay is a hassle. I leave to go get a card and upon my return the staff doesn't greet me AGAIN or acknowledge my return although it was only 15-20 minutes since I left. He rung my items up ask me to sign and I left. There was NO interaction, ZERO customer service, and zero reason for me to return! I've tried their popcorn and peanuts several times and it never never impressed me beyond basic, generic popped corn/peanuts. You know those giant bags of popcorn you can go into Kmart and buy for $0.99? It tastes just like that, except you'll pay $6+ for theirs... While writing this review, I am am pigging out on the Cashew Double Coated Caramel Corn... It's too good. This place is really fun. I'd love to come back next time I'm planning a party. It's a little expensive, but for a celebration, it would be worthwhile. I did order a bbq sandwich, which was very disappointing for $6 (terrible little bun, microwaved meat that was yellow- to be fair it was mustard based bbq- and has mysterious tiny objects in it). My parents used to take us to the Cromer's in Myrtle Beach growing up. This one isn't as flashy and touristy as I remember that one being, but the roasted peanuts are the best I've ever had. They also sell the Coca-Cola from Mexico in the glass bottles made with real sugar and have a ton of affordable party supplies, which is nice for downtown Columbia. Next time I will definitely try the boiled peanuts. I do wish they had some of the joke/gag/magic gifts I remember from the (now closed) Myrtle Beach location. read more
