Located in Manchester's city centre on Clarence Street, just off Princess Street and close to St Anne's Square, Croma is an "independent gourmet pizzeria", with a few branches around Greater Manchester, with this being their only city centre location. Having been impressed by their Prestwich branch, where I most recently awarded it a three-star rating (previously a four!), I decided to try this out after stumbling across Croma on UberEATS. Originally the app didn't allow me to specify gluten free - this is something which needs addressing however after a quick call with the store, the manager seemed friendly to assist and make sure my order was gluten-free and I could still get my food. The restaurant its self is an impressive old building, it is up a couple of steps to get in - which could be a problem for some. I ordered a Gluten Free Americana pizza, the pizza its-self was quite good quality, the passata was a little runny at times but overall the pizza was a decent pizza, especially for gluten-free, much beating most other takeaways I could have had including Domino. The overall prize was good too for delivery, my pizza came delivered the short half a mile journey to the Hilton Manchester Deansgate for £11, the delivery free was set by UberEATS and cost around £2.50 in that total. The pricing for eating in, however, is pretty much average, with it being a small restaurant they lack the offers which bigger chains do, meaning it could work out slightly more expensive than rivals, including (but not limited to) Bella, Pizza Express and Zizzi. The menu selection is pretty good too, if you like pizzas but maybe not so much for everything else. is this somewhere I'd order from or visit again? Yes, and it does definitely warrant a solid three-star rating, issues with pricing when dining inside, selection other than pizza including starters and sides, and the access issues mean I sadly don't feel I can go any higher than a score which would match Croma's other branch I've visited in Pretswich, of three-stars. read more

Stupidly I suggested we go look round the Xmas markets on a Sunday. Within half an hour I wanted to kill someone or something. Ditching the idea of getting a bite of overpriced sausage I remembered about this place that I've had bookmarked for some time. As soon as I stepped in I was washed with calm. Tranquil lighting and a nice airy setting was what I received. A waiter soon noticed us and guided us to a beautifully adorned table. Looking below go my right I witnessed the bar creating some awesome looking cocktails, in response to this I swiftly ordered a long island iced tea from the waiter. Drinks had to be chased up, however the quality was high... Perusing the menu it was mainly generic Italina dises, pasta, salads, soups and of course pizza. I opted for the worcester sauce mushrooms for starters followed by a seafood pizza. Himself had the dough balls and a plain margarita pizza. The food did take a while to arrive but they were busy. There were people dining above and below us. When I received my mushrooms under a thicket of rocket I did feel disappointed. I had visualised some large full mushrooms stuffed with tasty cheese etc, instead I got cut up bits of mushroom that was slighly greasy..not worth the £6 at all.. The dough ballls were pleasant to try but they were scattered about the plate and looked like half of them had escaped. Starters whisked aside we zoned in on our pizzas. This was well made, with a good thin crispy base and laden with giant prawns. Overall this is an okay place, the service was inconsistent, but the cocktails and pizza were good value for money. I like Croma, and I have visited several times to take advantage of their "Early Bird" special, which consists of a starter, beer or wine, and a pizza, all for £11.95. Currently, this deal is on Sunday to Friday 15:00-19:00 (extended until 22:00 on Mondays). It had been a while since I last visited until recently, but is seemed as popular as ever, especially on a Friday night. Despite it being busy, the service was top class. For starters, I ordered the dough balls, which are smothered with butter and very tasty. One gets a generous portion, which equates to a good starter. I am a fan of food with a bit of spice, and when it comes to pizza, often I cannot refuse Chorize Piccante or a similar pizza dish. I was a little disappointed when the pizza arrived, as I prefer a flat crispy base, which is how I remember Croma pizzas to be, but on this occasion, the base was more deep pan. On top of the base was a significant of pasata sauce, which was flavourful, but lacked spice. Therefore, it had a stronger tomato taste. I came to eat at Croma on a Saturday afternoon when me and the girlfriend has bumped into some relatives in town. The place was absolutely packed, but we managed to get a table downstairs and the restaurant was light and bright. A nice place to spend an hour or two catching up with some relatives. Croma is all about the pizzas really, and they're really quite reasonable as well, with a proper pizza for less than £7 sometimes in this nice restaurant. I went for the chorizo piccante, which had hot sausage and some green peppers and the like. I love my spicy meat, so this was perfect for me and went down excellently with a couple of cold, bottled lagers. Croma also serve some quite off-beat pizzas which are always worth checking out. My girlfriend's cousin had the Aglefino which is some haddock and other stuff on a pizza. Sounded totally weird, looked and tasted great according to reports. Croma isn't the cheapest by any means, but easily equivalent price-wise top somewhere like Bella Italia or Pizza Express and maybe a tiny bit more interesting and individual. read more

I've been here a few times sitting in and a couple of times for takeout too! They don't take bookings and it can get pretty busy but its good to know they have a lot of seating and the staff are great! Having only recently found out about their early bird menu (which runs throughout the week up until 7pm) we decided to head here on Friday after work. We were seated straight away and opted to all go for the cheap deal which for two courses plus a glass of wine or peroni was only £11! You are limited to either the standard garlic bread or the dough balls to start which are the cheapest on the starters menu. The dough balls were good - maybe slightly on the dry side but either way tasty enough and very light. The second course has more choice with you being able to pick any pizza off the menu and an added bonus upon asking meant that we also were able to go half and half! I opted for half peri peri chicken and the mushroom pizza - yum! The fact that we all went half and half meant that it was a complicated order and the waiter was good fun as we swapped and changed mid order! The pizzas were great - lots of yummy flavouring with cheese - spicy chicken and mushrooms. It was the perfect combo in my eyes! One of the mains came with jalapeños which it wasn't meant to - but easy to sort ourselves we didn't say anything. Great eye of detail though the waiter spotted it and apologised for the mistake. It was a lovely early dinner before we all headed off - thanked by the owner on our way out which was nice also. I love Croma! This place is fantastic, it's right in the city centre just near Albert Square, the food is lovely, the service is great and the prices are cheap! What more could you want? Croma has got to be one of my favourite restaurants just because everything about it is so easy, there's no pretention or attitude, it's always busy but you never have to wait too long for a table even without a booking, the staff are so efficient and quick and the pizzas are amazing. I really love when an unexpected suggestion for restaurants comes out of the blue. Croma was the choice and what a pleasant time I had with my family. First at all the kids where treated very nice and the menu for them was just perfect; a small pizza, penne, ice cream and to finish off a nice cromaccino!!! (it's an espresso size cup with foamed milk and topped with chocolate powder. So once the kids where sorted, for us was easier!!! Croma is the best, and the cheapest, pizzeria in Manchester. What more do you need to know? OK, so maybe you want some detail. Let's start with the prices. The pizzas range from £5-£8. No pizza is more than that, and that includes the pepper steak pizza. Dough balls (which are just as good as everyone else says) are a couple of quid. Drinks are fairly steep, at £1.50 for a fairly small soft drink, but they will happily bring tap water if you prefer. So why is it the best? Well, the ambiance is as good as everyone else says. Busy but not loud, merely buzzing as a restaurant should. The lighting isn't bright but is isn't so low that you can't see your food or anything like that. But the main draw is the food. The pizzas are just so clean proper food. You can really taste the lack of salt, and the quality of the ingredients. I've never before really tasted and enjoyed the base of a pizza before, or tasted each different topping distinctly. The combinations are bizarre but brilliant. I had a Chilli Peri Pizza with some fantastic chicken and peppers on it, while my friend had a simple Margarita which was the best I'd ever tasted. The service was good, and me and a friend had dough balls, two pizzas and a drink for £16 all in and all of it bar the drink was the best I've ever had. This is pizza as it should be. As soon as you can, visit here! Update: I have now returned to Croma another 3 times. Everything this review says stands as it was or reinforced. The Anglefino is mad but delicious. Croma's early bird deal is an absolute bargain. One of the best consistent restaurant deals in Manchester I'd say. Between 5-7pm, for £10.95 you can get a glass of house red or white wine or Peroni or soft drink, garlic bread or dough balls or mixed leaf salad and any pizza or main course. That's less than I would spend if I was cooking for myself at home! I normally go to the Croma is Chorlton (I think the quality of the food is better there) but this time I went with a friend to the one in town which people often find hard to find...head to the Starbucks on Albert Square by the town hall, Croma is behind that. I found the service efficient and friendly. We got served fast even though it was busy. Brilliant place to bring kids as they are very much welcomed and looked after. Go after 8 if you want to avoid children (it can get quite noisy). I love the choice of pizzas and the crazy toppings. You can get the more basic standard pizzas too, as well as very nice pasta and salad dishes. The garlic dough balls also rule. I also have to give them props for their Irish Coffee, that was yum and very well made. So Croma is a great place for all; for dates, for catch up meals with friends, for large parties, for a quick fix, for families and even by yourself (as i saw several people eating by themselves). I headed here on a Wednesday evening with my book club (term used loosely). We had attempted to book in at Dough but couldn't get a table. The staff were charming and friendly as soon as I walked through the door and this remained true throughout the evening. I can be quite picky about service in a way - I want staff to be friendly, visible and attentive without being overbearing or annoying. Staff at Croma ticked all these boxes for me. We started by ordering a bottle of the cheapest wine on the menu (which was okay, white wine mostly tastes the same to me!), the garlic bread with cheese, and the olives. Our lovely waiter pointed out that a single order of bread would not be enough for all of us - but rather than getting us to order more he asked if we wanted a pizza base with garlic oil and cheese. Yes please! This was just what I wanted it to be, and the olives were great, with chunks of marinated mushrooms and peppers in there. I've forgotten the name of the pizza I ordered, but I remember that it had steak and blue cheese on it. It was pretty delicious, with some sharp watercress to cut through the rich runny cheese. The pizza was a decent size, big enough to be good value but not big enough to necessitate a lie down afterwards. Overall I couldn't fault the food here at all, or the price - I paid £20 and was full and ever so slightly tipsy. No complaints here. While it's not my favourite restaurant in Manchester, Croma is a solid option for an Italian-esque meal if you ask me. read more

One of my favourite places to dine in Manchester. This Italian offers a modern style to dining with top quality food. I recommend the Bury Black Pudding & Chorizo Salad to get your taste buds flowing and also the Tuna & Black Olive Pâté. If you are dining with a friend or on a date i would also recommend buying pizza and sharing it as my girlfriend like to put it 'it's satisfyingly fulfilling' or something along those lines. The portion sizes are spot on with a starter and a main just enough to fill you up without the need to undo a top butter after the meal. As part of an attempt to bring my co-workers into the wonderfulness that it Croma, I organised a tasty lunch. Fourteen of us rocked up at lunch-time (having only booked for ten) and the staff were more than accommodating, setting up a couple more tables for us... The restaurant itself is organised across three levels (with a little snug hiding away near the back). The top level is a mezzanine which is cozy and intimate - ideal for a hidden away romantic date. The main floor houses most of the tables, and is where you'll likely end up sitting if a couple of you go for lunch or dinner. Downstairs is where the magic happens (and where we were sat). You get a view over the kitchen - brilliant. Sunday through Friday they offer a very reasonable lunch deal, with a Soft Drink, and a choice of one of three pizzas costing just under £6. Starters are all pretty much under £6 and standard pizzas are priced between £6 and £10, depending on what you go for (as of April 2014). I had the Chorizo Picanto; a spicy, meaty pizza which was all tingly in the mouth, with three kinds of fresh chilli and soft, peppery Chorizo. To start I had the soft, buttery garlic bread with Mozzarella - wonderful! They have a full bar, and a wide selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including a rotating specials menu. Croma - you cannot fault this place. Not one bit. Located just off Albert square in a small cluster of Italian style Restaurants sits Croma, a seemingly modest pizzeria. As you walk in, you are politely greeted, your coat taken and you are guided to your seat. As you look around you, you think "wow, what a pleasant place this is" and you slowly begin to realize that the atmosphere around you is absolutely buzzing. It is so lively, everyone around you is smiling and appears to be having a cracking time of it. Next thing you know, you are offered a menu and you look at all of this lovely yummy comfort food and are stricken with confusion about what to have, it all sounds so good! Then you cast a innocently wandering eye over the prices, and do a complete double take, "no! It can't be true! This is madness!" And it slowly sinks in that the prices are shockingly, almost unreassuringly reasonable. No but seriously, everything about this place is great. Even this service is quick, prompt, and polite. The prices range from about £7 -£9 for a pizza. Croma's specialty is pizza, however they do have a small range of salads and pasta dishes too. This are priced similarly to the pizzas. The wine list at Croma is perfect too. A bottle of house red wine comes in just under £14, and although you may expect it to be a bit rusty, it is actually full-bodied and lovely. The have a good range of beers and soft drinks also. Croma is also great for kids, it has a special children's menu which is £4.95 and includes lemonade, starter, pizza, ice cream and cup of foam which they have aptly named the "Cromachinno". Croma is the best pizza one can get hold of in Manchester and this isn't a matter of opinion. Its also the nicest place you can eat a pizza in Manchester. The menu is most similar to Pizza Express, but its got more of its own uniqueness and character. Its around the same price as Pizza Express and certainly not more. The pizzas are absolutely gorgeous, and everything I've had has been a success and believe me I've been a good few times. My least favourite pizza that I have had there was the smoked fish and emmental one, which I still enjoyed. My most favourite, which I now always go for having sampled a good 40% of the menu, is the Chorizo Piccante, an absolute joy to consume. The dough balls are lovely too, but don't forget to ask for extra garlic butter. I've even tried my girlfriend's salads (would never order such a thing myself) and even these are lovely. I love Croma. For me it ticks all the same boxes as Pizza Express but has a little more variety. I love the building for a start. The open space lends itself well to the clattering and chinging of plates and glasses that I love about Italians. It's cheap too! You can easily eat and have a beer as a couple for under £25. Totally one of the reasons I continued to live in Manchester. I am an American wife of a British man and he lured me to Manchester with Croma. Though they have changed the recipe of my favorite pizza, I have so many fond memories of this establishment. The atmosphere is always romantic and intimate. I have had many fantastic dates here, as well as girls's nights. We even had our "international" rehearsal dinner for our wedding here - and people from USA to UK to Saudia Arabia to Chile to Mexico to India LOVED it. This was also our "I had a bad day I need pizza NOW!" restaurant. I recommend going out of your comfort zone and trying a unique pizza such as Hoisin Duck (Anatra) or indian (Chicken Tikka Masala). Despite working around the corner, I haven't been back to Croma since my original visit in 2012. Wow. That's a long time - but it has all been rectified! My fellow marketing assistant was leaving us to go to bigger/better (in her mind!) things, so that could only mean one thing; a slightly boozy lunch, with plenty of carbs to soak it up before we got back to the office. We were seated quickly as a table of 4, though it was right near a table full of babies and next to the incoming table of about 10. Menus were handed to us but service throughout was more miss than hit - wine glasses were moved abruptly, menus felt a bit snatched, and there was no conversation offered aside from taking our order. Sharing some dough balls and garlic bread plus cheese - it should always be plus cheese - set us off on the right track. Our pizzas arrived and I was very much looking forward to my goats cheese, pepper and courgette offering. Unfortunately my manager's pizza came with meat, which she specifically asked for without, but they took it back and managed to turn around a new one quite efficiently. When we did get to tuck in, there were happy faces around the table. Everything worked very well together, and even the base wasn't the disappointment we so often face in Manchester based Italians. My only quibble with this place is a minor one--the name and metallic theme are somewhat incongruous with the fresh, inexpensive and hearty pizza fare. But whatever. Croma is from the same people who brought you Pizza Express, which is also much nicer (relatively) inside than its name would suggest. These people are bad with names. But they are very good with pizza. The pizzas here are kind of amazing. They have that delectable earthy quality you can only get from a wood-burning stove. They will fill you up--easily. They are creative and yummy. Somehow, they are being served amongst a bevy of over-priced city centre restaurants yet they manage to be so affordable! Being an adopted Glaswegian, I have quickly come to appreciate a good value. This is similar to pizza express but a whole level or two upgraded on food and overall atmosphere. The food is very fresh and prices are reasonable considering. Plates are hot and atmosphere is relaxed and tranquil. Pizzas are lovely but don't go for the spicy ones....because the simple fresh ingredients just work better with the simple recipes amd flavours are better appreciated. Went to Croma for lunch today (Saturday). The restaurant was really busy which is always a good sign. They have 3 floors. The main dining area is on ground level but they have tables in a small upstairs bit and also on the basement floor. We ordered the garlic bread with cheese, field mushrooms, funghi pizza, a pepperoni calzone and a lemon & vanilla cheesecake. All were very nice. The bill came to around £28 so very reasonable considering the quality of the food. They have loyalty cards too so you get a free pizza when it has been stamped five times. Croma or Pizza Express with a different pair of pants on is a very nice midweek style restaurant. I'm loving some of the reviews for this place - Croma is "all about the pizzas!" Comedy... it is after all a Pizzeria so those expecting it to be all about the fish and chips may be left reeling with disappointment. Having said that Croma does a nice line in salads... the duck salad being a particular fave of this reviewer, it may be slightly oily but its still beautiful (sort of like antonio banderras? - if thats your thing). The waiters and waitresses are friendly and accommodating (the lower level was opened just for our group of 6), their good mood probably attributed to the fact they can, I was told, take home any dish after their shift (Lobster excluded!) The reasonably priced restaurant itself is well located just opposite the absurdly expensive Piccolinos off Albert Sq. The interior is spacious and air conditioned however i have to disagree with those saying the place is light and bright, the lighting is distinctly muted and pretty dark in my opinion. However you don't need reservations, the staff are friendly the food is good and well priced (nearly everything is under a tenner) thus Croma is a great place to eat - especially if you're the one paying the bill. Pizza pizza pizza, I just can't get enough of it and if you want a good pizza then Croma is a safe bet. I have been to Croma quite a few times now and it really is very consistent. It does high quality pizza, it is in a great location (close to the town hall), it's family friendly and in my experience the service has always been really good. OK so there are places in Manchester where you can get bigger crazier pizzas but Croma will not let you down. I have been informed by friends that if you don't want pizza then the choice is quite limited but I think I am going to need to have a serious chat with these "friends"...why would anyone not want pizza. read more

I went here as an alternative to Pizza Express with my grandfather last week. It's a really nice space, airy and large, and it's the type of place you could go for a nice meal out that isn't too expensive. We only tried the pizza but I'm happy to report they were tasty. I had the Garstang Blue which involved various types of cheese and onions. The base was thin and slightly crispy and it all tasted pretty good! This is a really strange place: considering its central location and the surrounding restaurants and bars, it should be more expensive. Instead, not only will a lunch or dinner leave your bank in the healthy state, you should thoroughly enjoy the interior. The bottom level has large aquariums, and if you are sitting on the ground level the windows offer a generous view in the trendy central streets on Manchester. The relaxed atmosphere of this place is well accompanied by extensive menu of pizzas. There is no doubt the menu was composed by a chef with a good sense of humour. How can one otherwise explain Tandoori Chicken, Anatra, and Inglese pizzas that clearly hint at the Indian, Chinese, and traditional English roots of those dishes? I've always liked Croma's light and fresh interior, and the vibe has always been good. It is good to see it still standing in spite of competition and the economic situation. Have to admit, I personally am not a fan of the Croma chain as I so often have them rammed down my throat by friends - there are other places to eat in Manchester (you know who you are), but this one is the better of them. The place is well laid out and has a good atmosphere when busy. The food however, is bland, the pizza's are nothing special and toppings are sparse, often I've found the tomato base to still be cold and the cheese barely melted, more perspiring on top. Croma is my favourite Italian place in Manchester (the best in the North has to go to Il Forno in Liverpool). I have been there several times, usually for birthday celebrations with friends. Annoyingly they don't take bookings (or they didn't last time we went) so we had to wait upstairs with drinks in the bar whilst they made room for us. We didn't have to wait more than about 20 minutes though. The tables are on two floors, we ate downstairs each time, it has a really nice atmosphere. The food is of course the main event, and does not disappoint. They make one of the best pizzas I have tasted. I can't comment on the other dishes on offer as I go for pizza every time. All of the people I have been there with enjoy it too and it is a good choice for a large group, as you can't really go wrong with good Italian food and red wine! read more

This is service as it should be with pizzas to die for - just like Mamma would make! The best pizza in Manchester! Cannot fault this restaurant - an excellent range of creative and value for money pizzas served by an attentive, polite and smiling staff. The restaurant is comfortable with an artistic, modern minimalist decor, well maintained and spotless. After leaving work we went for the Early Bird special (between 4-7 M-F) What a fab deal! Glass of wine, garlic bread & any pizza for £10.5! Next time I'll be getting the salad option instead of the garlic bread, because although it was tasty it was the size of a calzone & didn't leave much room for pizza. Nice high ceilings to give the room some ambiance & a very polite, dedicated server. Couldn't ask for more. We will be back :) read more

As 'jcb' says, it's a smartly-dressed, classy venue. The pizzas are the strongpoint here: to add to 'jcb's reference of the Chicken Caesar Salad version (which is excellent, by the way), where else would you be able to get an 'English Breakfast' pizza!? The combinations may seem a little odd on the menu but they are definitely worth a go! There's no rush to get to Croma before these - and the other - pizzas disappear as this place seems in no hurry to ever change its menu. As far as I know, it has been the same for the past three years! Croma is fantastic! Its classy,reasonably(ish) priced and has a simple delicious menu made of the freshest ingredients! I love the strawberry juice too, and the sticky toffee pudding is to die for! Its a loud and lively place so good in groups, with collegues and friends. Its just a relaxed place to eat with a good atmosphere, thats not tacky, but classy :) read more

If you fancy something a little bit different to Pizza Express then Croma could be for you. The restaurant itself is very nice, clean and tidy and the service is excellent. Now onto the food! The pizzas are very very good and certainly a lot better than the usual run of the mill places. The variety of toppings was huge and you may have trouble deciding what you want. Prices are reasonable and there's a good choice of drinks to go with your meal. All in all highly recommended. read more

Croma is a fairly big Italian restaurant in the middle of Manchester by the Town Hall. It was pretty busy when my wife went there one Wednesday recently, but the group she was with got a table and enjoyed a good meal. The restaurant staff were pleasant and helpful, and were happy to make a minor alteration to one dish to suit one of the party. The meal was relatively cheap too -- certainly there are more expensive restaurants in Manchester! Car parking can be an issue it's not too near the tram system, so be prepared for a bit of a walk or a taxi bill. But all in all it was a good place to eat and my wife would certainly recommend it. read more

Croma is one of the those places that just sticks in your memory as it is both unusual and enjoyable. Quite similar to Pizza Express in terms of pizzas and setting, Croma stands out by offering unique toppings and fantastic service. I first went to Croma about 4 years ago and I still rave about it today! The pizzas were absolutely fantastic and it's not often you get to choose between Chicken Caesar Salad and Chicken Tandoori pizzas! These toppings may not sound very nice, but they are extremely tasty. If you're not a Pizza fan then you can choose from a number of other tasty options including fish lasagne and canneloni. If you want a classy night out, then Croma really is the place to go to. It's well located just off Albert Square and is smartly decorated in stainless steel, white tiles and crisp white table cloths - elegance all round! read more
