This is one of those pubs that I wandered into while exploring Sydney's eastern suburbs and sure enough I absolutely adore it. In a way it seems to accommodate everybody, whether you are have been a regular since the 1940s, or you are young and vibrant and looking for some great craft beer (much like me, well, except for the young bit that is). I went for a cheeky pub lunch today. I was impressed with the selection of condiments at the kitchen counter - so many mustards in ceramic jars. The staff at the bar were friendly but the kitchen weren't in too much of a hurry to feed me. When our burgers came out, they were very pretty: shiny brioche bun, pickle on top, but after the first bite I knew they weren't going to live up to their looks. The patty was a little dry and pretty flavourless (?underseasoned). The chips had good crunch but again lacked flavour. We sat out in the beer garden which is more a box to keep smokers in than anything else. I will probably be back, but won't be wasting my time with the burgers again.

However, some of them aren't actually all that bad, especially if you are looking for something that is rather unpretentious. Well, this one is certainly unpretentious, even though it doesn't really have a huge selection of beers on tap. The pub itself was quite nice and refreshing though, with a real modern feel about it. It just wasn't a favourite.

The front is old-style, and reminiscent of English pubs: you walk in off the street and bang, the bar's right there, probably with a row of middle-aged gents propping it up. There's not much room to get around here, so you're probably just here to stand and chat and down a couple of schooners. There are several other rooms behind, though: a room with a couple of old, low, wobbly sofas, a few chairs and stools adjacent to the pokies area, a pool room with two tables, and a back courtyard with tables. Nice, that caters for whatever other sort of mood you might be in. But if you get the chance, you should go to the dining room and have a meal. Because this is gastropub quality grub. Last night I had fine, crackling pork belly with apple sauce, roasted beetroot and potato and eschallots, and herbed polenta. Yum! Grilled fish, roasted chicken, steak of course, blue swimmer crab pasta, dessert cheeses, ice creams and more were on offer as well: the menu looked fantastic from top to bottom, and the dining room was crowded (the only downside, really, as people kept bumping me).

There is a traditional front bar which opens up to a beer garden and bistro at the back, a nice place away from the busyness of the street and ideal for unwinding on a weekend afternoon or summer evening. Well that was the idea. The menu sounds impressive but the food is ordinary and tasteless. Not such a good sign when competing with the hundreds of restaurants and pubs in the vicinity of King Street and Enmore Road. I had the pork belly which was tough, the Asian vegetables were limp and the rice was cold. Topping it all off, the portions were small and it was overpriced. Funny thing was that the beer tasted wrong. When you drink the same beer all the time, it's easy to taste when there is something not quite right with it, and easy to see when it's a bit flat. We took beers back to the bar to get new ones and changed glasses, but it still tasted off. The manager was rude and told my friends and I that we should go to another pub. Which we promptly did and have not been back. The beer garden wasn't that full, no wonder.

Star 1: having a $10 burger or reuben special (with the purchase of beer or wine) and the barman allowing me to get the pulled pork burg at $10 sans the booze ($18 normally). Customer service right there. Star 2: the ambiance out the back - trendy and upscale yet not too pretentious, with (my beloved) booths. Star 3: a few battered and deep-fried jalapeno slices tossed in amongst my (extremely crispy) shoestring fries. Love a lil' surprise! Star 4: when my "pulled pork" burger came out, I was a bit confused - BF and I both thought there was eggplant on it. No, dear Yelpers - that was actually STRIPS OF CRISPY PORK BELLY lavished across a brioche bun, with its little brother pulled pork nestled underneath, smothered in sweet and tangy 'slaw. It was just... pure porky poetry. Star 5: BF's Reuben sandwich (normally $14). This modern marvel was not your average Reuben. Two ludicrously massive, craggy slabs of melt-in-your-mouth, not-too-salty cured brisket, topped with the usual Reuben subjects of Swiss, 'slaw and Russian dressing served up on huge slices of amazingly toasty buttery Rye bread. Served alongside gherkins and pickled onions. One could have easily feed two. Everyone knows how good Mary's is, but this burger wins hands-down on surprise factor alone- how are you to know that crispy slices of pork belly will adorn your friendly neighbourhood pulled pork burger for a measly $10? (Well, aside from Yelp, that is.)
