Called to get my 2 dogs nails trimmed 4 times in 6 days and was told my 80 lb. black lab was too big. Waste of time.

Seriously awesome pet store. My kids and I go here just to hang out. My kids get to see (and pet), birds, bunnies, mice, lizards, dogs and many others. To start on a positive note, I've been coming back to Critter Cabana for years because its such a cool idea of a pet shop. The customers are able to interact with the pets, which makes it a fun stop. I used to go just so I could hang out with the ferrets... and of course, its easy to then splurge and take home some presents for your fur babies. Their stock is impressive and is of good quality. Their staff often is knowledgeable and very informative. Overall, I do really like this store. The downside, there are definitely some employees who aren't the friendliest. For example, on my stop today, I was in search for a beta fish and supplies. They had a tank just around a gallon labeled for beta fish for an affordable price so we snagged one. We grabbed other supplies and our beta and went to check out. A young gal at the register began scanning our items and as she scanned our tank murmured "Just so you know, this tank is way too small for beta." The tank with a big beta fish on it apparently was inappropriate for beta fish. Which, of course, is not her fault. But unfortunately, I didn't interpret her comment as being helpful. The tone just made me feel like a moron for thinking a tank with beta fish on the packaging was meant for beta. She showed me the correct size tank and it was a $60 difference. We stuck with the small size as a beginner tank and hope to move up in size on a later date, when ready to put down $80-90 on a tank. Finally, they constantly have puppies for sale that come from breeders. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about breeders, but for me its a real bummer that they support breeding. So I subtracted another star for that. read more

The remodeled location just opened back up and some of the issues from the past have been resolved. It is now bright, clean and well organized. There are a lot of dog products, and many of them are made in the USA (after so many recalls I'm staying away from anything that is made overseas). It's a quick walk from my house and easy to pop in when I need something for the pups. read more

I went in to get my dogs nails filed and they got done in about 3 minutes. It was shorter than I expected but I thought maybe they were just that good. When I got home I was disappointed to find out that her nails were scraggly and pieces of the nail were hanging off. I'm not expecting a Hollywood scale dog pedicure but it would have been nice to retrieve my dog looking better than when I took her in, not worse. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST PET STORES I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. I found this place on a whim when driving through the area. Right away from the outside it looked clean, fun and modern. The style of the store is really cool. (Keep in mind that this location had a fire accident a few years back so they are still remodeling). Right away the staff was amazingly friendly, talking to us, personally telling the history of the store as well as answering some questions we had about the animals. The downstairs area has a small selection of cat and dog supplies. Even with the small selection all their products are very high quality and unique. The fish were on this level as well as a small puppy section and dog grooming. I was able to pet and hold the puppies and rabbits (which were upstairs) which were all friendly and healthy. They are one of the only pet stores licensed to sell exotics so I was very excited to see that they had hedgehogs AND sugar gliders (as well as their supplies). They take good care of their animals. The enclosures are clean, well setup and the pets look healthy and happy. I do think the sugar glider cage should be moved however since it is near the window AND near the large birds (which is scary for the gliders hence their predators in the wild are eagles, owls etc.) other than that I think this place is absolutely fantastic and any pet owner wether a reptile keeper, exotic enthusiast or just likes dogs should totally come by and check it out!! There's nothing like a small town pet store! Critter Cabana has such a different vibe then the big chains and the customer service is consistently friendly and pleasant. I've been coming to this place since my kids were wee ones and still frequent this establishment for pet supplies and treats. The only area that I think could use some improvements (in my opinion) are the fish displays as they really do not show well or pop and do lack in some variety. We recently purchased a Lhasa-poo from Critter Cabana in Wilsonville. Despite the negative reviews, I decided to give the place a try. I had come here before for cat supplies and had not seen the "abuse" that others were talking about. First of all, I think it's important to realize that the reviews are a matter of perspective and quite emotional in some cases. The puppies are held in clear pens on the floor of the store, which one reviewer called a fish tank. The pens are plenty large enough for the puppies they contain and are nowhere near the size of a fish tank. The only similarity is that they are clear and rectangular. Please do not believe they keep their puppies in fish tanks. Second, you are allowed to pick up the puppies and hold them (unless there is a sign on the pen stating you cannot pick those specific ones up). I thought this was great. I got to pick up my Wicket and carry him with me throughout the store to see if he had the right personality for my home. I was also very comfortable by the time I left that he would be good with children. Wicket is a very well socialized dog because of this environment. He is great with children and other dogs. He is comfortable with them. The staff was all wonderful. They obviously loved Wicket. One of his little paws was dirty, so they washed him for me for free. The groomer also gave him a free clipping around his eyes, so that he would be perfect when my girls met him for the first time. She obviously cared about him. They staff also remembered him when we brought him a month after bringing him home. They all crowded around to see how big he had grown and ask questions about how he had adjusted. Yes, the puppies are pretty expensive here. But you get what you pay for. Wicket was the perfect addition to our family. Critter Cabana took great care of him until we adopted him. They also go through their dogs very fast. I was happy to see both his brothers had found new homes when I went back a week later to get a collar. read more

Visited here for the first time today. On the bright side, there's a large variety of animals and lots of accessories and equipment. Multiple down sides though. First of all, nothing was clearly labeled with a price tag. All of their reptile equipment was basically not properly labeled and unable to find a price for, which inevitably caused me to not buy multiple items. Then there's the actual animal care. Multiple dogs had absolutely no water in their bowls, and the food bowls filled with sawdust. There's the animals upstairs being handled by multiple children completely unsupervised and running around like crazy. I saw hardly any staff available, and nobody paying any mind to the children running loose with animals in hand? I won't be returning and will unfortunately not be purchasing the animal I had initially came for as I don't want to support that type of treatment for their animals. read more

This use to be where I would take my pups to get nails done but, after three no shows by groomers its a NO GO ! I even called to confirm yesterday the schedule and was told they were in at 10, showed up and no groomer . Very unprofessional. I will not go back again. read more

Not sure why this place is even a thing, it sucks. No supervision, anyone can just grab an animal and hold it? It's not a petting zoo. I've seen children pick up puppies by their necks and drop them because they do not know how to treat animals. Can't believe the humane society hasn't shut this place down. No respect for animals from the staff or people visiting. But dogs in plexiglass boxes with hamster wood chip bedding is cute right? This place is a zoo. It's an abusive environment for animals. People are picking up and walking around with animals, including rabbits which is extremely harmful for them since they are anxious animals who can break their own backs kicking to escape. Customers are crawling in the pens with puppies and playing with them which is unhealthy for puppies who knows what germs and diseases this dog will have from these people and their shoes. Large tortoises are being picked up by customers and carried around, it's only a matter of time until one is dropped and injured. This place needs to be closed. Animals are not toys. This is disgustingly ridiculous. And to top it all off everything is about twice as much as the store we frequent in Portland. I understand this is a small town with limited choices but there is no excuse for abuse. read more

This is the coolest pet store ever. We bought two snakes, a kitten and many fish there. They are always very nice and can "trouble shoot" pet problems. My kids love to go there "just to look" and pick up food. There are no better pets stores even in Portland. read more

I am very frustrated with how the owner Scot Johnson has treated me. I have a pup I purchased from them around mid May of 2019 and they have one year per plan. This is that if my pup were to have any genetic problems they would cover the cost of all her medical bills up to the how much she was. I paid $1299.99 for a purebred AKC German Shepard female. Her first vet visit was 2 weeks after I purchased her and they reported that 4 of her ribs were visible and she was underweight. I switched her food and fed as much as her tummy was willing to take. I went back in 2 weeks later and the same thing. Even after switching up her food. I had a vet tech sit with me and basically tell me I was starving my pup or keeping her from all the right proteins she needs... I had been paying $60+ for her food for them to tell me this. Once she was almost a year she was still very underweight. I had a 10 month old German Shepard that weighed 37lbs. It wasn't right I went to the vet and they confirmed it was congenital something was wrong with pancreas or her small intestine. The testing begun and I have already spent $1000 on blood tests, urine and fecal test. So I emailed the owner Scot Johnson asking him for a refund because my vet told me that more tests need to be ran. I was a responsible pet owner and told him everything including dates, the tests that were run, her weight and body chart from every visit. He got all of the invoices and receipts along with a letter from my vet letting him know it was congenital and the price of future treatment. I also attached a second opinion from the Tualtin veterinary hospital saying the same thing. He said that he wouldn't be able to help if she swallowed a sock and kept bringing up that it could be something that she ate. He would wait a week to respond to each message and not giving the matter care. He told me he was on vacation and shouldn't be attending to his email. He was nice in the emails but wouldn't respond in a timely matter. On 2/23/20 he said that he would cut me a check and I gave him my address to send it to. It has been over a month and no check. Very Very fun pet store. They have lots of fun animals and even some exotic pets. They have very big turtles that walk around, they usually have some cats, sometimes puppies, snakes, lizards, fish, and upstairs they have birds. Every once in a while they have some cool animals that I've never seen or possible heard of. It's a great place to go visit and see the fun animals. The only con would be that its a smaller place and you couldn't go there planning to look for say a puppy. Sometimes they have a few puppies and sometimes they won't. Ive been bringing my dogs here since they were puppies for food and supplies. One of the employees is really fond of my pug, Harvey. They only sell quality pet supplies and are always friendly. They also do a great job of taking care of their animals. They seem healthy and smell good. The cats they have on display are up for adoption from a shelter too. read more

Good selection of freshwater plants for planted tanks and a gorgeous display tank. Tanks and accessories were in line with what I would pay at an independent brick and mortar shop, selection in the filter department was a little sparse, but the lighting options and selection of tanks made up for it. I didn't peruse the fish selection, but there were some very large, very healthy looking Angels that followed me around while shopping for plants. read more

Critter Cabana mistreats all of it's animals and should be shut down immediately. My friends and I walked into the glass enclosure, where the kittens are usually kept, to see the lab puppies. Normally, lab puppies at 3 months are hyper and wanting to play, but we saw the opposite. They were so sleepy to the point where when we tried to pick them up they could not even open their eyes. The second we set them back down they instantly laid down and went to sleep. In addition, there were flies surrounding the puppies and they were too sedated to notice. We suspect they are giving the puppies tranquilizers, which are normally only used on long car trips or special circumstances. Also, it is not safe for the puppies to be constantly held and touched by germy, disease carrying children. Critter Cabana is irresponsible with the animals and should not be in business anymore. read more

The concept of the store is amazing. Our family loves being able to pet animals of all kinds. There are so many products to choose from and a lot of new things as well. Unfortunately the staff is underwhelming. I was in the store twice last week and not one worker said a word to my husband or I and then my mother or I on the second visit until we checked out. As we were looking into new products for our Beardies, no advise was giving, not even can I help you with something? I understand everyone has a bad day or two so that's what Ill chalk it up to. Made a 90+ minute trek to visit this store, and it was worth it. One of the most interesting and engaging pet stores in the Portland, OR area for sure. Broad selection of birds, reptiles, fish, puppies, small animals and common exotics (such as hedgehogs and sugar gliders). I know that they have a network of local breeders from whom they buy. One of the most positive aspects of the store is that customers are allowed or even encouraged to handle many of the animals, which means that animals have the opportunity to become well-socialized before purchase. I shopped at mid-day and the store was quite crowded, and perhaps a bit understaffed. Due to the large number of customers and children milling about and playing with the animals, the atmosphere was a little more frenetic than I would have preferred. Having said that, the customer service was polite and engaging. My biggest--only, really--disappointment is that some animals have an "a la carte" price (i.e., just the animal and no supplies) which is considerably higher than when the pet is part of the "package" price which includes caging and other supplies. I understand that pet stores make most of their profit on supplies and not the animals, but in some cases the "a la carte" animal was disproportionately high. I really wish that Critter Cabana was more conveniently located (for me!), but I predict many more visits in the future. read more

When the place burned due to an old heater, the community rallied to help this place revamp and get on its feet. why? puppy and kitty therapy. that's why. unless pet stores of my youth that for some reason had hardly any animals but a whole bunch of junk for animals, this place has animals. lots of them. and puppies. and kitties. we have a kitty from here and she is still doing just great. margalo came to us as a rescue through CC but they were honest and wanted the best for us and for the kitty. this place is a wonderful asset to our newbergian community. read more

We came to check out their ferret selection. The website had the wrong inventory number but they do say on there that the inventory changes often so that was totally fine. We were greeted and helped by awesome staff. Their prices for everything we viewed was below Petsmart or Petco. The staff was awesome and they will have us come back. read more

We recently stopped in and saw some puppies for sale. They were supposedly purebred but had no AKC registration or papers. The puppies were $1199.99 each. I happen to own a purebred dog that I purchased from a breeder. I paid $1200 for my dog - which happens to be the same breed of dogs that Critter Cabana had for sale. She has all of her papers and came with complete health records and genetic testing. I found the breeder after a great deal of research. The breeder then did quite a bit of research on me, also. She cares about where her dogs go and wants to make sure they will be well loved and provided for. The AKC registration helps track the quality of the breed and encourages breeders to adhere to the standard in order to prevent genetic health defects. RESPONSIBLE breeders register their dogs. Irresponsible puppy mills who are only in it for the money do not. Buying a purebred dog from Critter Cabana is only encouraging puppy mills. Why would any true dog lover do this? If you want a purebred, do the research and be a responsible owner. Do NOT purchase from a store that sells unregistered dogs to literally anyone who walks in the door. read more

The Manager at this store is so unprofessional and extremely rude. The puppies looked all too big to be in their glass pens and witnessed her yell at two different people to not touch the puppies while in there. She could use a little more decorum or move the puppies she didnt want touched somewhere out of the eyes of kids. They lacked product and I will be making the trip into Sherwood or Tualatin next time and skip this place and in comparsion despite the gas I will spend will actually be saving money due to their obvious markup on products. I tried to check out this store to see if it had a bit less horrific conditions than the Wilsonville store, and it wasn't much better. The animals are in filthy conditions and the staff are not knowledgeable about proper husbandry. Especially the reptiles who are commonly mite infested and housed with multiple snakes, and incorrect temperatures / lack of hides / lack of water dishes. My friend was here 3 months ago and it was exactly the same disgusting conditions. I have noticed a lot of people posting on the Critter Canada yelps stating that they have made a critical review, only to have it deleted. This place is awesome! We stepped inside supposedly just for a few minutes to get away from the rain but ended up staying for awhile. They have dogs that you can hold and cats you can interact with, large fish tanks with beautiful fishes. It had such a welcoming vibe. The upstairs was amazing they have turtles and birds, lizards and a hedgehog all which you can hold! I loved this place. Definitely recommend you stop by and check it out. read more
