Unlike many of its rivals however, Jackson's has the pedigree to boot too as it has recently been voted Best Chippy 2010 (although I'm not quite sure where). As you might expect with such a title, Jackson's offers very good fish and chips that is delicious and filling. Their fish is delightfully crispy and golden, whilst their chips are perfectly fluffy and just the right texture between dry and soggy. Their prices are fairly competitive for the area, meaning you can get fish, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a hot drink for less than four pounds, which is great value for money when you consider the quality of the food you're eating. If you're in the area definitely give them a try, whether you fancy a takeaway or a sit down meal.

It's not haute but if you like sticky and aromatic dishes with chicken that slides apart or beef with a little chew to it then there's definitely nowhere better in Formby. Recently however, I feel the quality of the chips has fallen and now a portion of chips is 50% chips and 50% crispy bits from the bottom, which I'm not so keen on. The fish is similarly disappointing, with the batter to fish ratio resulting in an unsatisfactory accompaniment to your chips. The fishcakes however remain the best in Formby, with the potatoey delights providing an excellent foil to a pint in the nearby Village Inn, as one friend of mine will testify. I've never had a chance to sample their Chinese dishes, but the menu is extensive, ensuring even the fussiest diner could find a meal they fancy. In terms of value for money with the portions you get, James's is recommended but if you want the best fish and chips, I would go somewhere else.
