    Don Luigi's - A great setting

    Don Luigi's

As fellow yelper Matt said, Don Luigi's is definitely a local institution in Formby. In fact, I…read morethink it may have been around as long as I have, or at least it seems that way. That the gaps between my visits have been large is a fault on my part, but what is truly impressive is that even when I may not have been for a few years, the next visit will be just as good as the last time I visited (no matter how long it has been between visits). The menu consistently serves up delights and on my last visit I decided to opt for the linguini, which was served with fried ham, chorizo and pancetta and was deliciously creamy whilst my girlfriend went for the cannelloni, which also got two thumbs up. From previous visits, I would also recommend the various pizzas there as they have a wide selection of toppings on offer to cover practically anyone's taste. The service here is always prompt, polite and friendly and this, combined with the great food, ensures that any dining experience at Don Luigi's is one to savour.

Serving easily the best Italian cuisine to be found in Formby (in something of a crowded market)…read more Don Luigi's is something of a local institution with the original restaurant being sited opposite the supermarket (was Safeway, now Waitrose) and only moving to this location, behind the same supermarket, a few years ago. Though the floor space has expanded (with some extra seating, a bar and a grand piano upstairs) the quality of food has remained as fantastic with soft, generously topped pizzas, delicious pastas and the signature sticky ribs (it's the recipe here that my mum has spent much of her adult life attempting to replicate - the secret is the fennel) The wine list too is impressive, although admittedly I only ever really plump for the Barbera Neirano, a red with a nice heft (can you tell I'm not a connoisseur?) priced at under £17 a bottle. The service is friendly, attentive and the management will frequently do the rounds of the restaurant floor to ensure everything is going swimmingly (if you've seen the Sopranos, think 'Vesuvio' but with less of an undercurrent of latent mob violence). Bellissimo.

    Panchos

And now for an altogether different dining experience. Kebab/pizza place Panchos, like Cooper's,…read moreis situated around the corner from the station, so close that the shop practically shudders when a train goes past. The shop itself is pretty small compared to its rivals Amigos and Flames but what they lack in size, they make up for with their quality food (I'm sure there's an innuendo in there somewhere, but never mind). I would have to say that Panchos do make the best pizzas in Formby, as they are doughy and have just the right amount of cheese without turning it into a glorified cheese on toast. They offer a great selection of different toppings too but my usual choice is The Godfather - pepperoni, salami, ham and bacon; a pig's nightmare. One negative is their prices, which are particularly expensive even for Formby (over 4 quid for a margherita) but if you don't mind paying a bit more for your food, or if you're just not a tight student like me, then I would highly recommend Panchos for your pizza and kebab needs.

This isn't strictly true, just bread with cheese and tomato (which would be a margherita to any pizza n00bs out there) is not very good; in fact it's usually burned pretty badly. So you could say that it's not done well, but well done. Fnar fnar. Ahem. Instead plump for meat feast or the pepperoni with onions and peppers, or the 'Panchos Special' (which has a little bit of everything - sorry for running the surprise). If you've got a big order take their "thirty minutes" delivery prediction with a pinch of salt and maybe some nibbles, 'cause you could be waiting a while to get your feed.

The fish they serve here is not cod and it is not made crispy, this fish and chip shop is located…read morein Formby though so at least the sign above the door is 33.333% correct. This is probably the worst place to get fish 'n' chips 'n' Chinese in the whole of Formby, it's not terrible especially - there are just far better places out there (see how I refrained manfully from using 'plaices'). What Crispy Cod Formby does very, very well is kebabs and burgers - this might seem odd for somewhere that so prides itself on fish that it puts the name of a fish that it doesn't in fact serve up in backlit plastic, but there it is. Donner or chicken, 'Hawaiian' (served with pineapple ring - exotic) or 'king' (served with an egg - regal) the kebabs and burgers are the reason to get takeaway from here. Just avoid the pizzas, fish and chip shop selling pizzas; it's just a step too far. It's just wrong man. Just wrong.

I used to love this place when it was Pitarras, I fondly remember visiting here on our last day of…read morehigh school at 11am and waiting for it to open so we could shovel handfuls of steaming chips into our mouths to aid our lingering hangovers. I also distinctly remember the owner, who always sported a cap and an absolutely excellent moustache (the skill of moustache grooming is a fine art). This establishment has since changed hands however and the change was not a particularly positive one in my opinion. The chips they do are average and the portions compared to their rivals are pretty small, plus they serve you chips in a little tray which kind of spoils the whole chips-wrapped-up-in-paper thing (it's just not the same when you have a tray supporting them, they should just slip everywhere as you struggle to eat them). They also do the usual Chinese dishes, burgers (which are pretty good, actually), kebabs and pizzas. I generally avoid getting things like kebabs and pizzas in chippies though, I feel that they are best left to proper kebab and pizza shops because when chippies have their fingers in too many pies, they usually end up doing everything a bit crap rather than excelling at a few things. I'm quite a fan of the fish tank in there though; thankfully, they don't put its contents in the deep fat fryer (far too small).

I'm not totally sure what…read moreit sounds like it should be really, perhaps some kind of feng shui shop, but I don't think you can actually sell feng shui. Anyway, name issues aside, Zenzero is a nice enough place to eat in Formby, offering Italian cuisine that's a bit more sophisticated than the usual pizza and pasta combos on offer elsewhere. Whilst they do offer pizza and pasta dishes, they also offer selections of antipasto, luxury steaks and scallops. Their prices aren't too bad for what you're getting but, as Matt says, the restaurant just doesn't have a particularly friendly or warm atmosphere. Perhaps it's because of the sheer quality of nearby Don Luigi's that Zenzero receives such indifference from me but I guess I just know that there's better places to eat than here. I'd recommend the food, but not really the dining experience itself as a whole.

Zenzero is another Italian restaurant in a sea of Italian restaurants. It's difficult to imagine…read morewhat happened before Italian restaurants came along and conquered the dining-out market - Times restaurant critic Giles Coren calls this primordial era 'BP', that is 'Before Pizza'. Well, Zenzero may be an Italian restaurant but it's not really a pizza 'n' pasta place - we're talking instead antipastos of cured meats and marinated vegetables, scallops in champagne and saffron, fillet steak with Parma ham and Madeira sauce. It's all of an excellent standard, and not even all that expensive (with the fillet steak priced under £16). This is a real restaurant and clearly the chefs and management take it all very seriously which is all very admirable. My only real problem with the place is the lack of soul; it's a bit sleek and a bit cold. The staff were friendly enough but there was never the sort of pleasant hustle and bustle, the warm feeling that comes with visiting a really welcoming eatery. Maybe I'm just after something that Zenzero was not intended to supply but restaurants should be about more than food and drink.

Pizzas & Co. The name brings up an image in my head of the place being run by some kind of giant…read moreslice of pizza and his friends Garlic Bread, Wedges and Soft Drink. Quite what the 'Company' part of the name refers to in reality is a bit unclear however, from the outside anyway. The shop itself is pretty tiny from the outside and when you enter there is only a small area available for customers to wait. However, the size of the shop is pretty irrelevant really because you're never usually waiting in there too long anyway as they are always fairly efficient with their orders. If you call up and order ahead they usually have your pizzas waiting for you when you arrive too, which is always nice. For those of you that don't fancy leaving your house, they also deliver. As the name suggests, Pizzas & Co. specialises in pizzas, mainly anyway. They manage to do a very good job of the ancient art of bringing together cheese and tomato on a bread base as their pizzas are both doughy and perfectly cheesy, with just the right amount of tomato sauce too. They have a wide variety of toppings available as well as a selection of different pizzas if you don't fancy making your own. The 'Co.' that they refer to in their name is the usual selection of pastas, garlic breads and sides that you'd expect, but the pizzas is where Pizzas & Co. really excels.
