The most notable thing about them is that this is the best place to get that famous blooming fried onion because here it doesn't cost an arm an a leg, they fried it perfectly, and the onion is sweet. They should've put that in the billboard instead of the nuggets, to be honest. It's a perfect spot for a good lunch, with fast food seating and open kitchen. Seasoning wasn't very strong. It really was just salty and hot. Couldn't taste much more than that as it really relies on the sauce to power through. So those big chunks of chicken that are not covered in sauce don't taste all that great. I've been a regular here for a long time because the food is honestly amazing, but lately, the experience has been a letdown. We order the "Hot" level every single time, so we know exactly what it's supposed to be...... but recently the spice levels have been all over the place. On top of that, we've had several orders with missing fries, sauce, or even missing chicken. What's most disappointing is the service at the front. There is a young Hispanic woman who usually works the station right by the register who is consistently rude whenever I bring up a concern. As a regular who keeps coming back despite the mistakes, being treated poorly for asking for what I paid for is a huge turn-off. I had this place bookmarked for years & I was finally in the area, hence it was my chance to try it, but wow was it a let down... From start to finish, it was a lackluster experience. We walk in to an empty restaurant, no acknowledgement from the four employees I saw behind the counter, no "hello" smile, nod, or anything. I was confused as a first timer, so I got the hint and ordered on the touchscreen. As we waited for our food, I needed to use the restroom, I asked the employee for the key and I get told it's for "employees only", seriously? A dine-in restaurant without customer restrooms? C'mon now. Food arrived about 10-15 minutes later, albeit, piping hot. But honestly, it was rather bland, although it did have a slight kick (I got the chicken sandwich level "hot") it lacked flavor. Not to mention it was extremely oily, literally drenching in oil from the bottom as you bit into the sando. We came here late, around 8:45, on a Sunday night. The ordering system is very easy and done using touch screens. The staff were nearby and available for any questions. I decided to get the burrito because I've never had the option to order a burrito at a chicken sandwich place. I got medium spicy chicken and the burrito is filled with pickles, coleslaw, and sauce, and was wrapped in a red tortilla. It was super delicious and the heat was just right, my only complaint was that it was not wrapped tightly enough and the inside fell out quite quickly, but was still delicious. My boyfriend and friend both got hot spicy chicken tenders with fries. They were super good, crispy, but super spicy (as was advertised on the menu). We watched the staff bread and fry the chicken fresh for us. The food came out very quickly. The fries were seasoned well and very crispy. When I signed up for Crimson Coward's loyalty club, I had set my preferred location to Artesia, but that location has since closed due to irreparable structural damage. Even though the Long Beach location is much closer to me, my preferred location got switched to the Downey location, which I hadn't been to before. Earlier this month, I got an email from Crimson Coward Downey that included a 20% off coupon tied to my phone number. I wasn't sure if I could use that coupon at the Long Beach location, which I had been to before, but like I said, I hadn't been to their first location in Downey. Plus, for whatever reason, I was in a really sour mood on a Saturday evening, and I just needed to get out. Like far out hoping that the food would be far out (see what I did there? lol) Just like the Long Beach location, the Downey Crimson Coward is located on the west side of Lakewood Blvd. It's in a strip mall just south of Florence, and there are only three rows of parking in the immediate lot. With so many businesses in that strip mall, I was afraid it'd be difficult to find parking, but surprisingly, the lot was nearly empty when I arrived just before 7 PM. There were a handful of customers inside at the time, but one was making an order as I stepped inside. I had my eyes on the Frankenstyle sandwich, which is basically a Crimson sandwich, but with mac & cheese, and each bun is replaced by a grilled cheese sandwich. Actually, on second thought, it's probably more comparable to a Home Style sandwich because that sandwich already uses toasted bread and cheese. If you add some mac & cheese as well as two additional pieces of toast to a Home Style sandwich, that would equate to a Frankenstyle. The Frankenstyle is listed as an off-menu item, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that the Frankenstyle wasn't even listed on their menu. Or was it not on their menu because they didn't have all the ingredients? That was almost the case for me, believe it or not. When I asked about the Frankenstyle, the cashier did confirm they do offer it, but wasn't sure if they had enough mac & cheese to make me a Frankenstyle. She asked one of the chefs in the open kitchen to check, and that chef said they had just enough to make one more Frankenstyle sandwich. It was my lucky day! One of the reasons I had my eyes on the Frankenstyle was because the Yelp check-in offer is a free drink with a $15 purchase. I wasn't sure if the $15 would be after my 20% discount, but before tax; I assumed it was. A Frankenstyle sandwich is just under $20, so with the 20% discount, I would have met the $15 minimum for the free drink. Had they not had that last bit of mac & cheese, I would have needed to devise a new way to make a $19 order. After paying, I asked how long the wait would be. The cashier noticed the kitchen was getting slammed with orders, so she estimated 15 to 25 minutes. Not surprised, honestly, since they don't cook the chicken until you order. 13 minutes later, one of the chefs asked me what my order number was. After I told him my order number, he saw his female co-worker working on my order and estimated it'd be about 3 more minutes. It was actually 7 minutes more before a third chef asked if I wanted my order for here or to go. More customers kept coming in as I waited, so the dining area was getting packed. I chose "to go", and he offered me a takeout bag. I also grabbed a few ketchup packets and some napkins before filling up my cup. Two of the drinks were out of order, but luckily, they still had the Pepsi zero sugar, so I went with that. I also grabbed a lid and a couple of forks. They didn't have any straws, but each lid does have a hole. Just be careful while driving! I ate the entire Frankenstyle before driving home. I don't know what was harder, that or holding the sandwich, but neither was easy. The thought of a fried chicken sandwich in between two grilled cheese sandwiches sounds like heartburn waiting to happen, but I was more focused on trying to hold the sandwich without making a mess in my car. Amazingly enough, I only dropped a few bits in my takeout box. How did the Frankenstyle taste? It tasted good enough to put me in a better mood, but some bits of chicken were overcooked. Borderline burnt I might even argue. Also, the mac & cheese was forgettable since I got their last scoop of the week, but I will forever be thankful for that last scoop lol. When I got home, I checked online and saw that the Downey location was sold out of Frankenstyle sandwiches. Lucky me! The Downey location is set up very similarly to the Long Beach location with the cashier standing just to the right of the front door, and the open kitchen spans the remainder of the right wall. There were about 4-5 chefs working in the open kitchen, and they were cranking out orders like a well-oiled machine. Will I order the Frankenstyle again? No. Once is enough. Do I recommend the Downey Crimson Coward? Yes. Most definitely! :) read more
