It is located 15 minutes from Fort Saint Houston and allows for a great break from the hustle and bustle of the city noise. The path is winding and long and gives way for walkers runners, skaters or bike enthusiasts to enjoy a bit of activity outdoors versus recirculated air-conditioned air inside of a gym. While I am not knocking gyms, I am, however, saying that this alternative may be more appealing to folks who want to spend more time outside and touch grass. There are two different entrances and plenty of place to park. The elevation on the trail varies slightly so there's a nice mix to a flat road and everything is well-maintained. At one point near the end of my run, I saw a deer and that was pretty awesome because let's be honest. How often does that happen? This feels like a great place to spend some time outside and there is more to this park. I am yet to explore so I look forward to providing an update and in your future what a great spot.

We walked the left side trail which is relatively flat with some slight rising of the road. The creek is dry. We saw several deer and many butterflies. Trees and other ground growth are abundant. Cardinals were everywhere and singing their distinctive song. The park is almost literally in some homes back yards. The trails are shared with bicyclists which can be a little annoying. They really zip by on the not overly wide trails. Many people are on electric bikes. Go there.

There are giant oak trees all over this park, so it's not really optimal for a game of soccer or football. But I'm sure you can come up with some tree friendly activities to do here.

It's time for a summer 2024 update on my review of Guadalupe South River Nature Trail (GSRNT,…read morelocated just below the Canyon Lake Dam off South Access Road in Canyon Lake, Texas). I still love this park and trail system, and everything wonderful in my original review holds true, but there is an important caveat to share (read to the end to find out). Please, if you visit this wonderful park, leave no trace. Pack out what you bring in, and if you are able bodied, get bonus karma points by bringing in a WORD mesh bag (you can pick one up at the trailhead) to carry out any trash you may see along the trail. If we all work together, we can keep this place as a clean and harmonious place for all to experience the wonder and awe of Mother Nature. GSRNT is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) with contributions by the local nonprofit Water Oriented Recreation District (WORD) of Comal County and the Lindheimer Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists https://txmn.org/lindheimer/, plus semi-annual Eagle Scout projects for trail rehabilitation and Keep Canyon Lake Beautiful (KCLB) for trash pickup. Most people doing work on this trail system are unpaid volunteers who care about this community. Parking for about 30 vehicles is available on the tree-shaded dirt/gravel lot on the river side of the South Access Road, and the trailhead is at the corner of the lot. Walk carefully as you follow the trail, as there are quite a few rustic steps and tree roots with a bit of elevation change if you continue to the end of the 1 mile, single-track path. The 30 markers along the trail highlight some of the native plants that thrive near our Hill Country waterways. See the guide online at https://txmn.org/lindheimer/guadalupe-river-south-trail/ . If you aren't a hiker, there's great fishing on the bank and cold water for floating or lounging in a short chair. Bird watching is an option, too. Access to GSRNT is unfortunately restricted on weekends from Friday evening to Sunday evening since May 2023. Why? During the pandemic, exponentially more people began spending time outdoors and many new visitors discovered the beauty of the parks in the Texas Hill Country. Unfortunately, too many of these folks left behind litter and destruction, with no regard for the impact to other visitors, park maintenance volunteers & staff, or the natural habitat. This negative behavior resulted in changed policies and reduced hours at numerous parks, including GSRNT. The restricted access is a bummer for locals and conscientious visitors alike. Most people work during the week and only have time for hiking on the weekends. It's a shame that a few bad apples ruin things for everyone. :-( On the other hand, I am grateful that the damage to GSRNT is being minimized and it's in good shape whenever I am able to visit on weekdays.

Well, congrats, you just found that place via Yelp. John Stokes park is wedged between farmland on the other side of I35, down the narrow and unsuspecting Cape street. Even on a Sunday, the park wasn't so busy that there was nowhere to sit or have to ourselves, and the people there made a comfortable mix of college kids, adults, and families. The best part of the park is the 30ft high, man-made waterfall that drops into a sort of cove. A perfect touch. Chances are, you'll see fearless kids flipping from the falls into the water below, which is at least a sight to see, if you are not the daredevil type. There are also park benches here for eating, drinking, or talking. If you live here in town, forget the Sewell Park swimsuit competition. Forget the Cheatam Street theme park crowd. John Stokes state park is the best place to experience and enjoy the San Marcos river. Tip: Much of this river park is tree-lined, so if you need direct sunlight to enjoy swimming in the cool river water, visit around noon when the sun is overhead.

I especially loved the trails full of the huge, ancient trees that seemed to make long tunnels! The property is huge and I was there for hours lol! I could've stayed longer!! There are so many trails that take you through so many varied habitats with all sorts of wildlife! I visited this past spring (April) and saw rabbits and a ton of different birds!! I even got three from my birding life-list: a Tufted Titmouse, a Painted Bunting, and an Indigo Bunting!! I was so excited! The sanctuary is gated private property so you have to get permission to enter but it's very very easy. All you have to do is fill out the contact form and let them know when you want to visit. They're very responsive and accommodating. They replied to me very quickly and allowed my visit - even though it was short notice. They will email you instructions and a gate code to enter. It's free to visit - all they ask is that you leave a completed checklist (provided) indicating which birds you saw and how many. They provide the checklists and also trail maps in a kiosk at the parking lot. And the parking lot is paved with ample spaces. I would consider the property mostly handicap accessible - the trails are not paved but they are well maintained and flat. There were some water crossings that even had little bridges with ramps. Very thoughtful layout! They also provide a port-a-potty on site - and happily accept donations to help with the cost of that. This is an amazing, well maintained sanctuary that provides such a quality environment for wildlife so I was very happy to donate! I had a blast here! Highly recommend!
