The gentleman answer the call and said that since nobody had shown up so he was half way home. We chatted a second then he ask me if it was important that I see this movie. I was on a second date and it was rather important that didn't look like an idiot. So...he turned around and came back to let just the two of us in to see the movie. We FINALLY made it to a movie at the Crescent Theater! This theater has been on our bucket list for months, after walking by and Max, the owner, spotted us looking in the windows and invited us in to show us around. It won't take months to get back there. This is a small - one screen - independently owned theater that plays one movie at a time. Max doesn't always have the most popular or most recent movie playing, but he always has a great movie playing. Many of the movies are independent films, although he does show some mainstream movies as well. He's so personable and passionate about movies. My hubby's favorite thing: he sells beer and wine! Don't worry, he also sells soft drinks and popcorn. One of my favorite things is that he locks the doors when the movie starts, and you don't see the audience getting up and going to the restrooms or concession stand. You can watch the movie in peace. I'm sure many people love the leather easy chairs on the first row. He has a website, Facebook page and emailing list so you know what's playing and what will be playing soon. I doubt we'll go to any other theater unless he doesn't get a movie we really, really want to see. This theater raises the bar for all other theaters. The ticket price is only $10 per person and $5 for most beers. Check it out and you'll never want to visit a big corporate owned theater again. read more

This charming theater on Dauphin Street was a welcome break after a morning of exploring. We stopped in for the matinee showing of Dune and thoroughly enjoyed the intimate setting. They have a good selection of drinks and snacks and offer you a cuzy for your drink. The doors lock before the show starts so no one can interrupt the movie and the space is clean and socially distanced in this pandemic time. Definitely hope to come back on our next trip to Mobile! read more

I'm part of a car club in New Orleans and contacted Max about hosting a documentary that had just released. He eagerly accepted and a handful of enthusiasts traveled to Mobile to watch the film. I don't know of any other venue in New Orleans or Mobile that 1. Would host such an event 2. Would be the perfect place to watch the movie 3. Deliver 5 star service every step of the way. The locals know this place is the shining star of not only downtown but Mobile itself. I can speak for our group and myself in saying we loved every second we were there and the owner Max made us completely welcome. I highly recommend this theater to locals and tourists alike. I think the Crescent Theater is amazing. They have great independent films, and occasionally a mainstream one (e.g. The Help). Recently saw Tree of Life and Terri. Both interesting and left you with something to talk about (love it or hate it). It's rare that you find a place with fab recliners, good popcorn, honor system beers during the show (keeping the love alive), and an owner who believes in the movies he is showing and what he is doing. Best kept secret in Mobile!!! This is a quaint family owned movie theater that keeps indie films Alice in the South. I miss having somewhere to go and catch an off beaten path movie and The Crescent provides me with this visual escape. The owner is on site, and keeps you happy and content with his personal commentary and selections of films. There are trailers, or commercials so if the movie starts at 6, you need to be there at 6!!! Come early and reserve a seat before it starts and you might be able to score one of the recliners up front. Beer is served and paid for on the honor system and has popcorn and other snacks for sale. Again if you get there before 6, you can run over to the peanut store across the street and grab some nuts or chocolate to enjoy the show. If, like me, you go to the theater to unplug this is the place for you. Max, gets a couple of big budget films a year, but mostly independent films. I usually get dropped off. Run in like a little kid and get our tickets. Then straight to the recliners for me. My boyfriend parks and meets me at our seats. I love Max's passion about the movies. This weekend we saw Brooklyn. You know how during a movie you keep looking at an actor and trying to remember what they were in before? I love how before each Movie he comes in and gives a brief rundown. Like, this actor was in this, this, and this. Expected to be nominated for several awards. Was filmed in Montreal, not Brooklyn, and costumes done by "x" except for this one yellow dress they bought at a vintage clothing store and it fit perfectly. It somehow makes me at least, feel like I have an investment in what I'm watching. read more

I've only been there twice, but both times, right before the movie, the managers or owners said a few words and thanked us for being there...which I loved. Recently saw Isle of Dogs here. This is a wonderfully run single screen theater. A bit expensive at $11 but no screaming kids, no obnoxious overhead EXIT signs, and best of all, no ads before the film. Movie promptly started at 6PM with no delay. Sound quality is good. Only bad part is a little bit of the left side of the screen was cut off, not sure if projectionist's fault or the screen's fault. read more

Love this movie theater! It is such a great gem to have in downtown Mobile! It only shows one movie at a time which definitely part of the charm! They also sell beer and wine at the counter which is definitely fun to have at a movie theater and you can't get that at most of the big ones! There is also a row of leather recliners in the theater, so if you come early enough you can snag one! Love the crescent and just saw a movie there the other day! Also there is always someone to talk about the movie before they start playing it! One of my favorite experiences here is going to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show around Halloween. I first went to the Crescent Theater a few years back, when 'Let The Right Ones In' first came out. If it wasn't for CT, we'd be stuck with only the mainstream movies in Mobile. Crescent is the best theater in town, with the best in Indie movies. I love that they play Rocky Horror all day long on Halloween and Mardi Gras day. Added plus, they serve beer! Also, Crescent is the only theater I've been to where provide experiences like a live band playing a score to a movie as you watch the movie. So awesome. This is what a movie experience should be!!! I came in town with my husband and was trying to find something to do during the day. They were showing the new Jurassic Park movie at 2 pm. How decadent; a movie in the middle of the week in the middle of the day! This place is adorable! Super friendly staff, they are on the honor system for snacks and drinks. I was told by a local that the owner usually has more indie films, but I didnt mind curling up in a lazy boy on a hot day and watch some dinosaurs eat tourists. One of my favorite places ever. It's got a very special place in my heart. Go and see any movie there and you'll enjoy not only the movie but the atmosphere and the snacks. If you're an adult, you'll feel like an adult at this theater. The drink selection is varied and very reasonably priced-- wine, soda, all kinds of beer, and even champagne (which I'm of the opinion is the best popcorn drink in existence)! The tickets are more expensive than a typical movie theater but it's made up by the prices of the snacks and the fact that you're supporting an amazing local business. I've been coming here with my family for years. Recently it became a weekend thing and we've became friendly with the owner, Max. My grandfather tends to be a talker but Max always will lend his ear for a few minutes even if it's busy. When Max found out I was moving to California, he gave me a free ticket. It was so thoughtful and made me cry. It's snugly in my wallet, and whenever I get a little homesick I'll pull it out and think about the next time I get to go to the Crescent. Max really cares about the movies he shows. When he showed The Sapphires he said that if you didn't enjoy it, he'd refund your money! Of course, no one took him up on that offer because the movies here are always enjoyable. I've since moved to San Francisco and still can't find a movie theater this great. Awesome experience. Its a small single theater but has a local and fun vibe. The owner locks the doors once the movie starts and gives the audience a short synopsis of the film before the movie starts....his guy knows his films! If you want anything: popcorn, soda, wine, etc. You grab it and settle up at the end. The first two rows have lazy boy chairs and blankets are provided as well. I don't usually share negative experiences like this because everyone has an off day. However, tonight's experience was unlike anything I've ever experienced and I'm still really upset! My sweet mother bought tickets online for me and my two girls (5 & 13) to see lala land tonight (a new musical with Ryan Gosner) at Crescent Theater. We got there and after standing in line outside for 20 mins the owner stopped us right at the theater doors and yelled at my 5yr old first asking her "What are you doing? This is not for kids! You absolutely cannot go in there!" Then he looks at us and says "This is NOT a daycare center! This movie is pg 13!" I honestly thought he was kidding but he continued to yell at my mom and I for bringing a child into his theater for a pg 13 movie! And I promise you he made a huge scene in front of a crowd of people! He insisted that he give us our money back and proceeded to walk us out! I was in total shock and still cannot believe how he treated us! If he truly felt so strongly about Avery seeing a pg 13 movie he could've quietly pulled us aside instead of publicly humiliating us. I will never step foot in this place again and will make sure that EVERYONE knows how hateful this man was to us including my 5yr old and my 60yr old mother!!! Please don't waste your breath telling me anything positive about the owner or this theater. There's no excuse for treating people the way he did tonight...none. And PLEASE feel free to share because I'd never want anyone to be treated the way we were tonight. I wanted to plan a little something different for date night this past weekend and Crescent Theater was definitely a win! My husband and I saw the new Jurassic Park movie, which was good quality, comfortable seating, and the management is so kind and accommodating. It was a fun "adult" night for us as they serve a great variety of beer and wine, as well as your normal theater treats. It almost feels like you're stepping back in time, but I appreciated that we could have that experience and also see an UTD movie. Such a great experience unlike anything else. It's a cute, small, one movie theater that shows mostly independent films. We saw Hello, My name is Doris which was hilarious! The owner is so friendly & comes in just before the start of the movie to tell you a little about the movie & actors in it. They are apparently known for having recliners in the front & if you get there early enough you may be lucky enough to snag one. However when we went he had had to replace the recliners & they hadn't come in yet so we didn't get to experience the recliners but it was still a great place! Perfect for a date night. How often do you start talking to the people next to you at other theaters? Not to often, but it happens frequently at this theater. In the desolate wasteland of culture which is (just kidding calm down) downtown Mobile, sits an unassuming theater that you may just miss the first couple times you drive by. Inside this modest theater is one of the nicest business owners and true patron of the arts that I've ever met. Max came out before the movie started, introduced it for the crowd and gave a few interesting facts about the movie and cast. I've never felt more at home in a movie theater. Great beer selection, wine, popcorn, candy, and soft drinks. The films you will find here are top notch. If you have a night to kill in Mobile, this is a must do. As one of the members of our group said, "It's worth it to go back regardless of what is playing just because the owner loves what he does so much". Indeed. Bravo.
