The Baldwin Pops, a 501(c)(3) - Nonprofit Organization, has been around Baldwin County on coastal…read moresouthern Alabama since 1977. They're an organization of volunteer musicians committed to enhancing the cultural environment of all of the Eastern Shore and Baldwin County by providing free concerts to the public. You never need a ticket to attend a Baldwin Pops Concert, however, seating is on a first-come first-serve basis. Their mission is musical education of young people, the future generation of adult musicians, through concerts, clinics, festivals and scholarships. We just saw them for the second time this year at the Erie B Mayer civic center in Gulf Show for their annual Christmas show, Holiday Traditions, which was fabulous. Earlier this year we enjoyed their performance in the front lawn of the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach with a splendid sound of pop culture. This talented group of musicians, conductors, staff and volunteers contribute to musical life in Baldwin County, giving us, their audience, some fabulous personal experiences with quality music. Sharing the heritage of bands in America by broadening appreciation of the depth and variety of music that only a concert band can offer. Bottom line: Talented people sharing their gifts of music that's free for all to enjoy! Highly recommended!! https://www.baldwinpops.com/ https://www.facebook.com/thebaldwinpops/

Just a fantastic film festival. It's an annual event in its third year and happens in November,…read morestarting on a Thursday and ending on a Sunday. If you are a fan of movies and/or filmfests you will love it. This was my first year attending so I cannot speak for the other two years, but this year's line-up consisted of great shorts, narratives, documentaries, and full length. None were commercial and so you really got exposed to movies you wouldn't otherwise see. That is my major beef with other Film Fests, that they often show movies that will or are already in movie theaters (NOLA film Fest in recent years) and don't focus on regional/local films or talent. Many of the films I saw over the weekend were locally produced, shot, and/or had local subject matters. That is what I am looking for in a filmfest: that it has an overall theme and that it focuses on the area or region where it is located. Keep in mind that Fairhope isn't that large of a city and consequently the firlmfest isn't large. But it was a professional operation with volunteers, professional brochure and schedules, and they even had themed swag you could buy ( I got a coffee mug). They also handed out a free coupon book that could be used at local businesses, which I thought was a great local touch. There were a few places to catch the films but all were located in the heart of downtown Fairhope to getting around was very convenient. I picked up on tickets at the downtown city offices and they were very helpful with the lay of the land. Parking was also not an issue, as there is non-metered street parking all over the downtown area. I parked my car around 9:30 am and didn't leave until around 5:00. I walked everywhere that day. There are great places to get lunch and some fantastic shopping and so in between films I got something to eat and did some light shopping. All-in-all it was a fantastic day. If you love smaller filmfests showcasing great independent movies then you will enjoy the Fairhope filmfest. The fact that it occurs in a charming town is just the icing on the cake! Check it out...you will be glad you did!
