One of the high spots of our wine tour last year was not a winery, but rather a little food trailer…read morenestled between a pair of grounded boats in Penticton. It's just too bad that on our second trip to the same region months later the trailer was not on a higher spot, given said boats were no longer grounded. It was on our last trip in the fall of 2016 when my girlfriend and I heard about the Crêperie Ooolala. We enjoyed the experience so much that on a follow-up trip less than a year later, it was one of the few destinations earning a revisit. Alas, there was no creperie to be found, as the location it had usually claimed was quite literally below the water line. It's a tragedy that people still ignore the consequences of man-mad climate change, even with the evidence is so plain to see. The Penticton beaches were gone, the park nearby fenced off, leaving poor Crêperie Ooolala nowhere to park. Denied. If and when it does return, everyone should take the opportunity to samples their crepes. The two hosts are friendly, fast, and believe it or not, very, very French. Their selection is authentic and the girlfriend and I both ordered brunch before embarking on another leg of our wine tour. If you happen to find this trailer, don't miss out...though I fear they may as endangered as the Do-Do. Their Facebook was last updated at the beginning of May, and when I called them at the end of the month, they explained they were still closed. The Crêperie Ooolala is adorable, what a food trailer would look like in a Monet painting or, to take a more modern comparison, a city Lego set. There are small tables nearby covered in cloth for those to sit, most under the shadow of the SS Sicamous. These were by far the best crepes I have ever had, hopefully an authentic representation of the owner's homeland, regardless if that homeland is actual France or Quebec.

Crepes were lukewarm and rubbery. It was obvious they were at least 2 days old. The chocolate…read moremousse was basically Betty Crocker icing mixed with some cream....there was absolutely no air in the mousse. At best it was a low quality ganache. The crème brûlée was nothing more than scrambled eggs with a thin attempt at ar brûléed sugar topping. When we mentioned to the server that the egg custard was scrambled we were told "that's the way we do it and everyone likes it". We've been to Paris many times and have had many crème brûlées so we know what the texture should be. Perhaps the local clientele believe this food is French but it was a huge disappointment. Will definitely not return.

Formerly Poppadoms, now operating as Paisley Food Co. from a food truck/trailer in the liquor store…read moreparking lot, this is as close as Kelowna gets to (Vancouver's world-famous) Vij's. Extraordinarily flavourful, generously served, locally sourced Indian food that is better than anything in its genre in the city. I contacted the owner of Poppadom's via the email address listed on their website, to ask him if their new, private catering company would be able to help out with a simple, intimate affair: a stay-at-home date for our 10 year anniversary. Serge, responding on behalf of his co-founder and wife Jas, gave me the exciting news: after a period of rest, and trying out the Farmer's Market, they were now operating the truck Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am - 7 pm, and had been operational for only the past 2 weeks. I was in luck. He offered to put together a menu of his best cuisine, and I'd pick it up from the trailer when it was time. Serge recommended: - The butter chicken - The yellow dahl (on the house!) - Rice for two - Naan bread - Veggie pekorah with dipping sauce - An amazing Indian street food dish whose name I didn't catch: a spicy and sweet cold salad featuring potatoes, chick peas, tomoatoes and more, served in a waffle bowl. This food blew our minds. It was more than enough for the 2 of us for lunch, and gave us leftovers for another complete meal afterwards. Already, my wife and I have decided this has to become an at-least-monthly tradition. The price came to only $28 including tax, and the quality was through-the-roof. Not to mention Serge's down-to-earth kindness: he reminded me to get flowers for my wife, offered the Dahl for free, tried not to accept my tip (I insisted), emailed me afterwards to ask how it all went. This is the real deal.
