I previously gave AVC a 5 star review. In the past, we have had excellent service..Unfortunately,…read moreour experience in Sept 2025 was not good. They have been bought out, since 8 yrs ago. Lucy had a small lump, behind her left front leg. We took her there for minor surgery to have it removed. Little did we know, they no longer have early morning surgery, as in the past..so Lucy, who gets anxiety, didn't have surgery till late morning..I get a call about 10:30 did I want the growth biopised, from an un-named employee at $200 cost..I am thinking small bump..no thanks, whoever it was hung up..11:45 no call from ANYONE how Lucy was. I called and they said she was done with surgery, but we couldn't get her till the vet called us..1:00 I called again..the vet was "in a meeting" and could not be disturbed..we could still not get Lucy..1:45 we came to pick up Lucy..the receptionist was totally snotty, said the vet's "meeting" could not be interrupted..she brought Lucy out, handed her over, and said you can take her outside now..No indication, if she needed pain meds. So at 2:45 I called again, and got a different employee who was nice..and said Lucy would be fine for the day with out pain killers..NOW it would be 4:30 to 5:30 before the vet called..$600 charge..The vet called at 5PM, and said that she could "watch" the patients while she was in this meeting to see that they weren't having problems...When we picked up Lucy..she had a VERY large incision on her side..NOW at 5:00 the vet tells me it was fibrous and that is why it was so large..YET SHE DID NOT PERSONALLY TELL ME THIS WHEN THEY CALLED ABOUT GETTING A BIOPSIE. at 10:30..some office worker did not explain it was worse than thought. WHEN DR BARBARA was Lucy's vet, if there was surgery, it would be early, they would call you when surgery was done, call you the next day or so, to see if the dog was ok..NONE of this now, plus doing surgery, and then scheduling a 2 hour meeting..instead of contacting people is not right..they might still be ok for routine check ups..but surgery, our experience was not good.

I appreciate their bedside manner, and the fact that the doctors and techs never once tried to push other services on me. Or up sell me on things I didn't need or didn't come in for was appreciated. They even followed up with a text a few days later asking how our dog was since his vaccinations. I appreciated the care & follow up. We are switching over from another vet in town and this was a great first experience. We will be back.

I'm extremely disappointed with my experience at Heart of Ankeny Animal Hospital…read more We were sold a prevention plan and were explicitly told by the tech that nail trims were included. Both my husband and I heard this, and it was a major reason we agreed to the plan. When our puppy needed a nail trim, I called and mentioned that I had the prevention plan that included nail trims and asked if I needed an appointment. They scheduled me right away. When I arrived, I was told nail trims were not included and would cost $27. This should have been clearly communicated on the phone. Mistakes happen, but there was no accountability and no effort to make it right. When I asked for a refund since the plan was misrepresented, I was now charged $30 for the nail trim because I was "no longer a member" and didn't receive member pricing. They clearly value transactions over relationships. It's unfortunate because Dr. Quinn was great, but the business side is poorly handled. I won't be returning.

It has taken me years to write this review, we have been clients here for 5 years and kept hoping…read morethings would improve. We got a kitten from a family friend who was a barn cat- the kitten was 8 weeks old but very small. We took it in for a first vet appointment because she was a barn cat and we wanted to have her checked out. The clinic insisted that she needed all her first kitty vaccines- and when I questioned them on her size and if she could handle them they passed me off and said she was old enough to have them. We went ahead with them at their recommendation. The next day our kitten seized and died. I called the vet the following day to explain what happened as we were all shocked and very sad. They told me there was no way to know that it was or wasn't the vaccines unless we did an autopsy on the kitten. I thought maybe it was a fluke, they were not thoughtful and kind. But we weren't in the position to autopsy a small kitten. Fast forward, we got a new kitten a few weeks later and didn't vax the new one till she was a few months old. When she was around 6 months old- we had her spayed & declawed there. They told us to put her in a room by herself with her litter box so that she did jump on couches and break her stitches open. We had an empty room in our home we put her in when we needed to leave the house and couldn't monitor her- and she went crazy and wanted out and broke her stitches open anyway. After that we left her to roam around the house and never had another issue. Around a year our cat started acting weird and I was convinced she had a urinary infection. I took her in an explained her symptoms and they dismissed me and sent me home, telling me she didn't have any symptoms. A few weeks later the symptoms persisted and got worse- blood in urine, peeing every where. I took her back in, and this time they tested her and said they couldn't get enough urine out of her to determine an infection and sent me home. Each time we visited costing exam fees and lab fees. Finally they told me to take her home and try to collect litter in a plastic box. The problem was she was peeing in the house and not her box. I had to bring her in overnight for observation and for them to collect urine to test. Finally telling me what I knew in the first place was that she had a urine infection. Each time we visited their bedside manner is rude, and not kind. I've seen both Dr Grimm & Dr Danks at different times. And each are the same. A couple years ago we got a Bernedoodle puppy and went to the clinic to establish care for him- o had his vacs records from the breeder and this clinic insisted he needed another bordetella shot. Even though I could see from his breeder records he'd already had one, and it was very close to the timeframe he'd already been given one. I questioned them about this and they insisted he needed it. I felt very intimidated and questioned them again but finally conceded that they probably knew better since they are the vet. Our dog had a horrible vaccine reaction hours later. He couldn't walk and was very lethargic. This was an 8 week old puppy. I called our breeder and they said he shouldn't have been given that because he'd been vaccinated for this before I picked him up from the breeders vet. When I called the clinic and told them, they didn't act concerned at all and just told me I could give him some Benadryl and call them in the morning if he still couldn't walk. Everytime I go into this vet clinic they try to upsell me on services I am not there for nor did I ask for. Making me feel pressured that I am the worst animal owner if I don't agree with them or allow them to do what they recommend. I feel that I've been really patient and tried to give them the benefit of the doubt but after five years of issues and feeling this way we are done being treated at this clinic.

The smell of urine was overtaking to put it gently. When we got to the front desk we ended up waiting there for 15 minutes while the girl running the front desk looked for the "forms". What forms you might wonder? The form that every customer must sign before their dog stays for the day (she could only find one page of a two-page document). Now for the worst part, while waiting for the girl running the front desk to find the forms. (Now I'm thankful she did take along time). The other girl in the back seemed (and sounded) very overwhelmed, undertrained, mean and potentially abusive. She kept yelling at the dogs repeatedly while slamming their kennels- "Shut up! Shut UPPPP!!!! Every min or so..... As my fear and concern rose not only for my own dog that I was planning on leaving there for the day, but for the other dogs of paying customers we decided it would be too risky and irresponsible of us to leave her at this place. We decided to pass on the FREE trial day. I asked the girl first before we left with our dog: Me: how many dogs do you have here per person? Staff: 15... Me: Great!! Me: are you trained on how to deal with dogs behaviors? the girl in back just keeps screaming at the dogs to shut up! Staff: yeah, sorry about that. We left with our dog feeling like we made the right decision not to let her stay. Best decision for her health and overall happyness.
